I see this all the time on the floor of Comic Con every year. I was able to get four sets of the Terese Nielson PWs, because 3 of my friends agreed to wait in line with me and get one (limit 1 per badge, stamped and checked with ID). However, I also ran across a guy early in the day, and then again late in the day, who had been paying people in line to purchase them for him (usually $20-40), and ended up with over 100 sets.

Bearscape posted a message on The State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/03/2019)Very well put tronix and exactly my thoughts. I really like the idea of the Knowledge Pool combo since it involves a lot of the cards I love, but I think it falls at the same hurdle many brews do in Modern in that you just end up doing something reasonable that other established decks already do better.Posted in: Modern Archives
If you want to rush to the combo there are much quicker options and if you want to control to end with a lock JtMS and bigTef already do this. -

Still consistently dragging The Little One-ofs That Could over the finish line when he could shuffle in forest and 4 Karn Liberated instead.Posted in: Modern -

They don't. And honestly, they can't. When demand outstrips supply this badly, people will always find a way to circumvent any manufacturer intentions of "fair" distribution. I don't even know what they could possibly do. Ship to your local LGS and force you to open the box in front of staff before you leave to show it's not gonna go right up on Ebay? Even then you could just go and sell the cards... -

ktkenshinx posted a message on The State of Modern Thread (B&R 11/03/2019)Posted in: Modern ArchivesQuote from tronix »what precedents do we have to work with? the only that come to mind are infect and amulet bloom where turn 4 or something akin to it were cited as reasons for bans.
even then you have to consider context. such as infect with probe being able to check if its okay to go for it, and bloom having overwhelming mid to lategame backup plans. if im reading things correctly what the neoform combo has going for it is pact of negation for protection and it doesnt use the GY to go off. tbh without more information ive no clue how those compare (in relation to improving the decks overall efficacy or whatever).
Back in 2015, I estimated that Amulet Bloom won approximately 23% of its games (estimated from a coverage and MTGO sample) before T4. This included concessions by an opponent. The confidence interval of that range, calculated in two independent samples, was 15%-30% in the smaller N sample, and 17%-29% in the larger sample. Seething Song Storm averaged about a 25% pre-T4 kill using similar methods. Based on this, I'm comfortable saying if a deck exceeds 20% for pre-T4 wins and is also top-tier, it's probably in trouble.
When I played Cheeri0s a lot on MTGO in 2017, I had about a 75% MWP overall with about 200 games total in the sample, winning on T2 or T3 in an outrageous 40% of games. Obviously, nothing from Cheeri0s ate a ban, so the "true" win turn in a larger sample was undoubtedly lower. The deck was also not strong enough to catch on at a top-tier level. This shows that single-player samples don't necessarily reflect the MTGO-wide sample. We need more data to draw meaningful conclusions about potential bans and T4 rule violators.
I did a coverage-based analysis for both Counters Company and Affinity in a sample of approximately 60 Affinity games and 40 Company games. In those analyses, I found that Affinity averaged a pre-T4 win rate of approximately 5.3% with a 95% CI somewhere between 0% and 14.2%. For Company, it was 3.5% with the CI at 0%-10.7%. Neither of these decks had bans, so I'm comfortable saying the deck needs to be winning at least 10%+ of its games before T4 in order to be on Wizards' radar.
Finally, I remember an analysis I did of over 100 Caleb Scherer MTGO Storm games back when Baral first came out and Storm looked a little scary. During that time, we calculated an approximate 12%-14% (don't remember the exact #) pre-T4 win-rate. This iteration of Storm also did not eat a ban, so I'm comfortable with 12%-14% being a safe range.
Overall, based on all this, I'd estimate that a deck is in danger if it is BOTH top-tier AND wins approximately 20%+ of games before T4. -

UR phoenix, like many top decks now and in the past blurs the lines between macro-archetypes like aggro, combo, and midrange. however it is still doing degenerate things, which becomes most obvious with its most explosive draws. the interactions, such as cheating on mana by getting a bunch of creatures for 'free', do go beyond what i think many would consider the normalized or structured play patterns for the game. context matters of course, as some things are more or less broken, unfair, degenerate, or whatever you want to call it depending on whats going on around it; however im not sure many besides yourself would balk at using such terms to describe whats going on in UR phoenix.
like hardened scales? yeah id call some of the crazy things it can put together unfair, with the subset of the craziest stuff as degenerate. burn on the other hand, its very linear in its axis of attack, but its just machine gunning spells by hardcasting them; which isnt any more 'unfair' or 'degenerate' than the same strategy seen in standard.
at the end of the day though, it really doesnt matter what you call the decks as long as there is mutual understanding happening when talking about them. we can understand that a deck like dredge, or to a smaller extent phoenix, are just fundamentally different than a zoo beatdown deck.

something being in the works to carry on the soul of mtgsalv is heartening, and i would definitely join when and if it ever comes to fruition. as others mentioned a base of a traditionally styled forum would be great, and it doesnt need to be fancy or anything out the gates (im assuming some content-management-system is planned to be used). i dont think any social media integration is warranted (id personally prefer none). card linking functionality is needed of course.
it may also be helpful to establish continuity of the content from here, even with something as simple as linking the end of threads to new ones established at the new site. no reason not to leverage ongoing user generated content to set the tone of the new location as an information hub (mtgsalv is still going to dominate search algorithms for years to come). i havent looked too much into what discord offers in terms of integration plugins, but i think itd be neat to have a balance of 'chat' functionality and more comprehensive forum threads at some future point after things are established.
also dont forget (or feel bad about) asking for donations, and having links set up to take them. im not averse to chipping in what little i can from time to time, and optional crowdfunding can be a powerful tool.
cheers~

the price tag isnt doing any favors either. its like they set up a product thats good for stores to open and sell the singles, cause who else wants to foot the bill for a bunch of cards not very relevant in the format you are playing. also, no matter how good the draft format is, people arent just gonna jam it regularly when it costs twice as much; not to mention core 2020 is right on the heels of its release.

i see allies in the same boat, it explodes onto the board but does little else. im sure they would also like a curse catcher/mausoleum wanderer, thalia, freebooter, meddling mage, etc. because its those sorts of things that let you compete in a field as diverse and powerful as modern.
goblins, even with the help from mh1, is in a similar situation. patrick sullivan/cedric phillips covered it pretty well on stream last weekend: without port and wasteland to really push that mana advantage you are looking at cards like goblin grenade and bushwacker to go all in. matron and that BR flash goblin are great inclusions, but there still doesnt seem to be enough to prompt you to go bigger and try to play that midrange/control plan like legacy goblins does. the tribe, being mostly mono-red, is pigeonholed into all in aggro because there just isnt enough disruptive tools available to support anything else.

i do want to pick up some copies to play so ill probably just bite the bullet at anything under 20; rather than waiting around 1.5-2 months to save 15-20 bucks.

i do wish it costed as much as a standard set. the arbitrary price hike was absurd from the start, and nothing ive seen spoiled has changed that opinion.

Instant
Choose two -
* Each opponent sacrifices a creature.
* Exile all cards from each opponent's graveyard.
* Create a 1/1 white and black Spirit creature token with flying.
* You gain 4 life.
Entwine 3 (Choose all if you pay the entwine cost.)
this is quite the modular card.
its hyperbole because you are talking about percentage points in 3-4 decks that comprise 20% or less of the meta at any one point making another deck unplayable (as in not even an option in tournament settings). it also assumes that you make zero adjustments of your own. which isnt to say that metas cant become unfriendly to whatever decks, because they can, but you are conflating that with a deck no longer being 'viable'.
its no more 'deleting' hardened scales from modern (your words from a previous post) than damping sphere did to tron or storm. do you honestly believe it will be so bad for hardened scales your deck will be in the same league where decks such as elves, merfolk, mono-u tron, 8-rack, blue moon, etc reside; because that is actually tier 2+.
