Phurphoros is a deck I have been working on and fine tuning since theros release. Taking cards in and out and just trying to see what is the most consistent, quickest, and safest route to my victory. I realized how much I absolutely loved him after playing him in standard in just about every Red and R/x deck you can think of. After picking up Commander a month or so after theros release I started with other decks like Grixis Reanimator and my Mono-Black Erebos, God of the Dead Deck. Then playing another game of standard one day I'm reading Purphoros, God of the Forge and realize just how broken he is. First of he is an Indestructible Enchantment that only turns to a creature when you hit your devotion count. Okay 6/5 for four with a giant target on his head that says remove me. Why not make that harder. You don't build a Purphoros Deck to be swinging for 6 damage if he's hopefully unblocked. You build him for his ability. Think of him as an indestructible enchantment that you can play again if it ever get's removed with your opponents limited enchantment removal that deals with indestructible enchantments. I decided to make sure Purphoros would never become a creature and if he did I could in response be able to sacrifice whatever was causing his devotion to reach the 5 count to bring him back to his safe state of just being an enchantment. That is not to say your opponents won't search there deck for those answers if they have them. But those answers are far more few and between. So his abilility says Whenever another creature comes into play under my control he deals 2 damage to EACH opponent PER creature. Goblin Rally and Siege-Gang Commander both hit every single one of your opponents for 8 Damage. Your playing with 2 other players. That's 16 Damage. 4 Players 32 Damage. Hey atleast your hitting everyone for the same amount and not putting a target on your head. WRONG! If your playing a well built Purphoros Deck and you start to lay him on the table your gunna get "the look" from some people. Without a doubt your pretty much the Enemy of the State. Oh well....Better kill em quick I guess. So with that basic understanding of how I built him hopefully you can understand the card choices a little better. It is one of the main reasons I don't go all in on the goblin route. Tend to get a little too much devotion. For example I love Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker but 3 devotion plus purph's one and your already at 4. Too close for comfort. So on to the list...
I would love to know what you guys think and also am very interested in some suggestions. I do know I need to get around to getting snow-covered lands just have not felt like forking out $20-$30 just to make my extraplanar better. What do you think of the land count? There's plenty of card's I've tried like Splinter Twin That may or may not earn its place back in the deck. Alot of cards some people use and some do not may because of their meta. Either Way I would love to hear what you think could be a valuable edition to the Forge. Maybe I passed something up. Maybe I took it out because I am testing another card right now. Maybe I have not gotten it in the mail yet (Mana Crypt I'm looking at you. Either Way let me know what you think about what you like or what could be changed. Also Take it easy on me if I did something wrong this is my first thread/decklist. Thank you all in advance for looking and I can't wait to get your input!
You don't want fanatic because the only heavy devotion mino is Reckoner. Mogis might be good in that deck. Purph is okay. What? Chandra would be okay if you went midrange. ...no.
Chandra wasnt really thought out to well your most likely right on that one. I still think Fanatic has a spot. Only heavy devotion is reckoner? Look at mono black devotion. Nightveil spectre...If the only thing considered heavy devotion is a card with 3 of the same mana symbols then I think all the devotion decks are pretty much out of luck. and we both know that's not the case. Rageblood shaman gives him +1/+1 and adds 2 devotion. Ragemonger makes him cost one less and adds one devotion. Felhide Copies him and hits for more instant damage well giving you another creature and adding devotion. Idk still have alot to be seen depending how many more they print and if they are going to make any more cost less. Guess we will just have to wait and see
Ok but its also competing with a few other creatures at 4cost
You have Fanatic of Mogis, Mogis god of slaughter, Purphoros, The Felhide Spiritbinder, Chandra, Erebos
Just to name a few and honestly i would rather run any one of those I think.
Maybe if it was RB like i said before. Idk They gotta give the tribe something quicker
This is directly from the wizard's site "The Twelve Labors" from 2 days ago about ragemonger before they had it finalized.. I'm hoping it means that they gave up on it and we might see some lower mana cost ones.
"It can come down on turn two, and at the time Minotaurs lacked two-drops. There was a "Hurloon" rule that Minotaurs are 2/3 or bigger, which makes it difficult for them to also cost two mana without a downside."
Might been better if it costed RB2 but at RR2 meh honestly stop giving us 3-5 mana cost taurs. The deck will never be viable without some 1-2 mana cost. I was reading that WoTC has some rule about them having to be a minimum of 3 mana cost and if that is the case then idk. I dont think it could ever be competitive. Either way I'll give it a whirl. But my 45 rageblood shamans were really hoping to hit the tournament scene :/
Civic Saber is Chromanticore's second best friend I wonder what you would use along with it in a casual deck because ill be surprised so see that thing ever see standard. Too bad when u reanimate creature enchants u cant have the option to reattach
