I agree with the statements about why it is more popular. Right now since the format is faster, people want the ability to turn 3. Thus, they can steal more games against unfavorable matchups. I still value consistency more personally even if it is a turn slower, but I understand why people are playing Breach.

Good job you guys with the tournament results!

I have actually wondered the same thing. Our deck is more consistent then them, and we are in fact more versatile. Maybe its popularity?

Hey guys! 90 person PPTQ yesterday (was insane competition basically the top So Cal players were there a few GP champs and some other known players) . Went 3-4, but honestly feel very good about the way I played. Looking back, there was only one misplay the entire tournament (it did cost me that game though). Varience was truely not on my side this tournament. The field looked like a lot of Bant Eldrazi, Jund, and infect. I was feeling good going in.

    Round 1: RG Ponza

Game 1 I get some lands destroyed, but there is no clock to back it up. I rebuild quickly and titan does the job. Game 2 a Baloth does the work for me. 7 rounds with a payout to top 24 due to size.

2-0 games 1-0 Match In: 3 Baloth 1 Thrun 2 Nature's Claim Out: 2 Anger of the Gods 4 Khalni (he had removal for it G1)

    Round 2: UW Control

These were honestly 2 quick games. A finks is not a clock against us, and I scapeshifted him for the win G1 and Titan G2.

    4-0 Games 2-0 Match

    Round 3: Jund

At this point, I am very excited when I see it is jund turn 1, as I have played many matches against jund players who know the deck well and I have not lost a match yet. Looking at the top tables around me, I knew if I won this match I could
top 8 since the X-0s were mostly grindy midrange decks.

Game 1 is a breeze and goes the way the Jund match should go. Game 2 however, I make a minor misplay that cost me the game (my only misplay all tournament). He had quadrupile discard this game to rid of my payoff cards but put himself to 4 life with 2 active valakuts in play. I had a 3 turn clock to topdeck a ramp spell, payoff card, or non forest/valakut land. I topdeck all 3 of my basic forests in a row. The thing is,I forgot to block the Dark Confident turn 3 with Sakura to save me 2 life and sacrificed him on accident end step. He was hitting me for exactsies at the final turn, so although HORRIBLE varience to topdeck all 3 basic forests with so many outs, I checked the top card and would have gotten him with one more turn to live. Feels bad man!

Game 3 was interesting. I was getting extremely mana flooded after he went discard into discard into discard (no ramp spell no payoff card nothing just lands). Even then, I needed to topdeck a mountain or ramp spell with one turn left to win over the course of 3 turns like in game 2. This time , the topdecks were 2 forests and a thrun that was quickly lilianad.

I was extremely on tilt after this match , because I don't lose to Jund with this deck. However, he played very well and no matchup will stay 100 percent win rate inevitably with varience being a ***** sometimes. I just was mad that it happened now instead of against the same level of players at other tournaments besides this one. After a drink of water and some talking to friends, I calmed down and focused on winning out to top 8 this thing.

    5-2 Games 2-1 Match

    Round 4: Boggles

I kept a hand with bolt 2 lands search farseek scapeshift anger. I feel good untill he goes Boggle into spirit mantle turn 2 to swing through my topdeck sakura. Then he goes ethereal armor into rancor. A next turn daybreak and I lose with one turn left to kill him.

Game 2: He just had the boggles nuts with a triple path for my blockers in the match. When they have it they have it. I was still one land away from killing him both games and had one turn to topdeck a land or ramp spell that turn, but I topdecked a payoff card I didnt need instead of the lands. The player I played against didn't seem to be the most well versed player (didn't know what on the play meant, had to remind him of triggers etc) so it was a little more of a feelbad.

    5-4 Games 2-2 Match

At this point I know Im out of top 8, but am playing for prizing.

Round 5: Game 1 I kept a hand that I knew was fantastic against a slow deck like Grixis Control (I knew he was on it from spectating other matches). The hand had Stomping Ground Farseek Search Sakura Scapeshift Khalni. I knew with 26 lands to draw, I win this game. He was on the play and inquisitioned my Search. This wouldnt be a problem, except for AT LEAST 7 TURNS IN A ROW I didnt topdeck a single land and died to a snapcaster flashed in early. Even then, he was down to 4 life because I drew all 3 of my bolts.

Game 2: I have too many threats for him to deal with and his answers are thin.

Game 3 is when it got interesting. As shown in my sideboard guide I posted, I board differently for every Grixis varient (delver or control). Every card he had shown represented control (even after thought scours), so I had boarded out the useless bolts and angers... Well he went turn 1 delver into a blind flip... I was getting under serious pressure , but even with that and 2 snapcasters swinging, I topdecked a Prime Time with one turn left and shot down his delver FINALLY and a snap with prime time to block it. He was at 10 life and dieing next turn and he only had 3 blue black sources. He plays the fourth snapcaster he drew to get back a thought scour as last resort, mills 2 useless things of his and topdecked the red source for the bolt...

    6-6 Games 2-3 Match

I considered dropping because varience was very much not on my side (I had spectators who watched the match say how somehow everything went his way there), but I knew if I won the next two and finished strong, I would walk away with prizes.

    Round 6: Jund

The 2 games were over quick and played out the way the match is supposed to. I only wish this happened round 3, and this would have most certainly been a different report...

    Games 8-6 3-3 Matches

I check the standings and I am 32nd . I top 24 with a win, and I came in determined.

Round 6: UWR Nahiri Control (Francis Celona)

This is the guy who got 9th at GP LA. He is a local at my store, and knew exactly what he was playing. I play against him frequently at FNM (albeit before I owned Titanshift) and generally do well against him. I also know this is a favorable matchup (which Francis agreed to after the match), so I felt good.

Game 1: he has 3 counters for my 3 payoff cards into a Nahiri . he ults nahiri for the win before I can recover.

Game 2 I play a turn 3 Thrun and swing in for the win. He also remanded my Baloth I tried to play after 4 times in a row!

Game 3 he has a turn 3 clique, but because I didnt see how he added aggressive cards in the board such as Geist and Clique untill this game, I had boarded out bolts and angers (which you dont do if you know they have these creatures). A few swings with a grip of counter spells to prevent me racing it makes a bolt snap bolt dream crush me. He played very well, and I would rather lose to him (whom I consider a friend of mine) then a random dude.

The good news is I sold Ad Nauseam and bought the cards to finish the deck myself on paper finally!!! (I borrowed my 75 from someone to play this weekend). I will be back for revenge. I wouldnt change a single card in the deck right now, even though I didnt face a single deck where Ancient Grudge was useful. I am excited for many more big tournaments with this deck, and hopefully will have better luck next time! Expect a report for my next FNM.

Just won a 37 person FNM with my list I posted. To note, I sideboarded exactly how it was in the guide I posted. I considered this a practice tournament since quite a few people from my store are going to the PPTQ on Sunday (I am planning on going)

    Round 1: Merfolk

Game 1, he had TRIPLE spreading seas and it threw off the titan plan for one too many turns. The last spreading seas was on the turn before he would have died without it, so it was clutch for him. Game 2 was a turn 4 win without trouble. Game 3, he double spreading seas'd , but the bolt and anger shut him down and I casted two Titans for victory. He Phantasmal Imaged my prime time, but it was not enough.

    2-1 Games 1-0 Match

    Round 2: Affinity

This was an interestning match to say the least. I mulled to 5 but he mulled to 4. On the play, I kept a hand of scapeshift two lands (one a fetch), khlani, and search. I turn 4 him and he had the crackback swing because of a chain of overseer into plating early topdecks. Game 2, he turn 2 blood moons. I kept a very interactive hand and I had fetched a forest turn 1. I used my interaction to keep his creatures off the board, and his moon was screwing him over since he could not attack with manlands. I casted two Prime Times and won through the moon ( I have stil in quite a few matches not lost to moon). We played a few games after preboard and postboard and I won all of them but one. I really think the matchup becomes favrable once you know how to beat it.

    4-1 Games 2-0 Match

    Round 3: Goblins

This was the Atarka Goblins deck that flowed around, not 8 Whack. I personally think Artarka Goblins is much scarier due to the reach and lifegain resiliency. I have the turn 4 and go down to 1 life game 1 for the win (thank you Sakura!). Game 2, I baloth turn 3 to buy time (I find out he topdecked skullcrack the turn after, but I only played into it because he only had one mana untapped at the time) to cast titan turn 5 for the win (Sakura again did work!).

    6-1 Games 3-0 Match

    Round 4: Grisshoalbrand

I was originally paired against Jund, but then repairs occured and I got paired against this deck (I hate Grisshoalbrand for reference as a deck). This was the guy who is letting me borrow the deck (since I am missing a couple of cards to finish the list on paper, I borrow it when I can untill the cards are available here, which should be in a week or two). I was very concerned about this matchup and it was down to the wire. I kept a solid 7 card hand with the turn 4 Scpaeshift, but he turn 2ed me on a mull to 5 game one. Game 2, I turn 4 Scapeshift him because he didn't play the moon in his hand (I was bluffing the Nature's Claim but it was a scapeshift). Game 3 is down to the wire.. I Scapeshift on turn 4 to get him down to 3 to kill him with a land, but he Nourishing Shoals into Through the Breach for Wurm to get me to 5 and kill me next turn. I had another scpaeshift in hand though and just scapeshifted again for the lands I needed left. I really do not feel comfortable playing against the deck at all, as it always feels like a huge coinflip.

    8-2 Games 4-0 Match

    Round 5: Abzan

Game 1, he got stuck on 2 landsand I turn 5 Scapeshifted him without much trouble. Game 2, I just had Prime Time pick up the slack for me through multiple discard spells. I hope I am paired against GBx all the time!

    10-2 Games 5-0 Match

Pairings go up and there is me and one other undefeated with Dredge, but the payout is basically the same, so we draw. He is a great dredge player, so we played a couple of games and I won them (this is a fun matchup since they can't interact much with us). I also played 10 preboard games and 10 postboard games against Bant Eldrazi, and I only lost two of them (one of them when I drew all the lands in my deck without gas). I was curious how the matchup played, but it seemed very favorable. I even won through double TKS multiple times! I walked away with 42 dollars in credit (to help buy some of the cards missing when it becomes available), and a good feeling of testing a lot for the PPTQ I am aiming to win! Pumped for Sunday and will come back with a report Smile

You pretty much nailed its use. However, it also can copy a ramp spell which can be useful.

No problem! Please update me with results if you can! When the sideboard guide says "Mirror", it means scapeshift varients in general. That could be clarified in there and I apologize that it isn't. Will also report back with a PPTQ report this weekend Smile

We have more tools against aggro then the other versions though in the maindeck sweepers. Also, post board Wall of Shards along with our wishes do wonders! The spell snare decks are already good matchups anyway

I personally believe the Wish build, but the Spoils version is more proven. You can still turn 3 with the wish version though(I do it a decent amount of time). I find the Wish version has more resiliency and more answers. I have won games due to having mainboard answers that I would not have won without. I also have never lost to slaughter games (which the spoils version really struggles to beat), because the backup win cons have been so effective.

The list he is bringing to GP Indy is 3 cards in the sideboard different from my list. For a while now,I have been testing with his prior list before the 3 card sideboard difference (which was changed yesterday). This is more of a meta preference, as he is really gunning for aggro a tad more then I am since I am not going to GP Indy.

Got 2nd place in my first tournament in 6 weeks! 35 people 6 rounds. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ad-wishiam/

    Round 1: Bye
Got to scout the field and get a good sense of what I was going to be facing.

    2-0 games 1-0 match

    Round 2: Kiki Chord

Game 1 I turn 4ed no problem. Game 2, he had an eidolon of rhetoric. I had an unlife and went for EoT Ad Nauseam for the win, but he chorded to get rid of unlife and I lost. Game 3, he mulled to 5, I countered his turn 2 Eldrich Evolution, and it was smooth sailing from there.

4-1 Games 2-0 Match Sided in: 3 Wall of Shards Sided out:1 Pact of Negation (more of a blowout with Eldrich Evolution now),2 Lotus Bloom

    Round 3: Bant Eldrazi

Game 1: Double TKS made life hard and I lost. Game 2: I had a lab man on the field and an unlife. With one turn left to live, I topdecked a wish for the win! Game 3: I comboed off turn 3 with no issue.

6-2 Games 3-0 Match Same sideboard plan as round 2

    Round 4: Affinity

This is against a very good longtime player. I knew the match was going to be good. Game 1 came down to him having the nexus on the play the turn before I was able to combo. Very close game down to the wire. Game 2: he mulled to 5, and was pressuring me with a master of etherium and two vault skirges. I wished for the kill with an unlife when he had one card in hand. I go for it (which was greedy because I had a wall of shards that was buying me time that I got rid of with two angels grace, but I was statistically likely to win and knew every extra turn was a turn he could draw into hate cards or more pressure), and the last card in his hand was spell pierce. He wins shortly after. He told me after what I did was the right play. Overall close match!

    In: 3 Wall of sh

    6-4 games 3-1 match

Round 5: Eldrazi Tron with maindeck Trinispheres and Chalice

This deck is super cool! I truely thought this was a horrible matchup between the TKS with consistent pressure and the disruption. Game 1, he mulligans to 5. Unfortunately, the 5 (with him on the play) was natural tron, conduit of ruin, eldrazi temple. He turn 4 Newlamoged me for game. I have to admit I was very salty. I didnt board anything in or out because I didnt know how to combat his deck with the sideboard. Game 2, he mulligans to 6 and mistakingly takes with TKS turn 3 the Lab Man in my hand instead of the Lightning Storm (my first two draws), so I won instant speed. Game 3, he turn 3 Oblivion Sowers my Lightning Storm away on turn 3, but I wish for BTL. He goes for turn 4 chalice on 5 (which would have been gg as he had two smashers next turn), but I pacted it and won next turn with Angel's Grace+ BTL.

    No sideboard changes

    Round 6: Jund

We agree to draw since he is number 1 seed and I am number 3. We play it out for fun, and he game 1 gets me with triple goyf beatdown and I draw only lands for 8 turns in a row (literally). Game 2, I leyline of sanctity protection and combo him. Game 3, we both mull to 6 , he maelstorm pulses the leyline in hand and wins with triple discard. Glad we drew!

Sideboard in: 3 Wall of Shards 4 Leyline of Sanctity Sideboard out: 3 Pact of Negation 2 Pentad Prism 2 Lotus Bloom

I end up in 2nd place ahead of the affinity player by .5 percentage points! This was enough for 30 dollars store credit, which I am planning on using for free entry to the big PPTQ next weekend at the store. The deck is still going strong! I am torn between this deck and Titanshift (Im not finished with the deck yet, but I would be borrowing cards for it), but I am okay with either one. I am leaning towards Titanshift though, I am gunning for the invite.

How effective is Chalice of the Void against you?
