I don’t play Magic anymore, but I’d like to see what decks people come up with using Empath. It’s a little awkward with CoCo since you don’t want many 4+ cc cards in your CoCo deck. Could just have a couple copies to help hit your 2-3 fatties.
It might just function as a replacement to Fauna Shaman, which sometimes saw play in my decks, in like 1 or 2 copies.
I don’t play Magic anymore, but I still follow along with the scene and the new sets.
If there’s anyone still playing Soldier Stompy, it just got a potentially great new addition. I think this card could potentially replace Preeminent Captain.
Fiend Artisan is quite similar to Fauna Shaman, but it actually comes at more of a cost since discarding a creature is better than having to sac a creature you already cost. It adds one converted mana cost to the casting cost essentially as well. I think the ability is worse than that of Fauna Shaman, except maybe vs countermagaic, but that fact that it can become a threat itself might make it better.
Vivien, Monster's Advocate looks great actually but it's 5 mana. I'm a huge fan of the card design though, and if I was still playing magic, which I haven't been able to do for a while now, I'd be testing her out!
you were playing the same list? I’m guessing this deck was basically just ported over from Pioneer.
I’m pretty sure the deck needs to be rebuilt to exclude Karn. Besides Lattice being banned, Opal was banned so artifact decks will be less prevalent, and therefore his passive is less relevant.
I’ve never been that high on Hydra, but it worked really well in that deck with not many high cc creatures for a toolbox deck, where it is awkward. It also gave a glass cannon pseudo combo deck some protection and IN ADDITION, it helped dig for the payoffs. Definitely he best deck I’ve seen for Hydra.
Unfortunately I think Karn really smoothed that deck out, and I’m not sure what could replace it.
Up to 4X Vivien for starters. So it’s only 3 slots that need to be replaced
Interesting idea, though it’s hard to find extra space for non-green lands. Perhaps a one-of, alongside 4 Misty Rainforest. Accompanied by Veil of Summmer in the sideboard, it could make T%N much better vs. disruption, which it has struggled against in the past. Running lots of enchantment ramp such as [Overgrowth]], which tradi9tnally has been used in T&N, is a much worse option than it used to be before AssTrophy was around, so I think the ramp should be different.
Christopher GOOCH made a top 8 with Green Devotion!
I’ll get this list up on the Primer tomorrow :). I’m cleaning it up (putting a “history” section in but focusing mainly on new lists).
I hate that they keep acting like this is somehow a “Pioneer Deck” when (a) the deck plays multiple illegal cards in Pioneer and (b) we’ve been playing the deck for years and some of us have been playing Karn since before Pioneer was a format. I do, however, appreciate that Todd’s domination in Pioneer did put some light back on the archetype’s viability. He can take credit for it in Modern too if he wants (as he has been a great voice for Devotion).
I haven’t been playing Llanowar Tribe recently (as my meta has a lot of bolts and decays...but I may have to sleeve them up anyways )
Well I Just learned about the new banning. I hate that Wizards is just banning everything so quickly, instead of banning one or 2 cards and seeing how the format responds before banning something else! Banning Oko I can understand, as it is a very one dimensional, oppressive card, that wants to be played in almost any deck that can cast it, though I’m not happy about banning Mox Opal. The Urza decks will already take a hit with Oko being banned, and Opal allows for so many decks to function. Also not thrilled with the Lattice ban as it virtually ruins Karn, TGC.
anyways, after seeing this second place result for Leyline Devotion, I have some newfound hope for that strategy. Before when I was playing my most finalized iteration of Leyline Devotion it was doing very well and fun to play. This result confirms why it was performing well.
Not even sure I really like his version, but it’s hard to argue with this results and I haven’t Analyzed it much, or playtested it at all. I really, like Vivien though, and I’ve been praising that card since it was spoiled.
My versions is more toolboxy, incorporates the Vizier combo, and doesn’t use Karn anyway. The list I had put together is still legal. I’ll post it again.
Legendary Enchantment Creature - God
Indestructible
As long as your devotion to green is less than five, Nylea is not a creature.
Creature spells you cast cost 1 less to cast.
2G: Reveal the top card of your library. If it is a creature card,
add it to your hand. Otherwise, you may put it into your graveyard.
5/6
@CurdBros
didn’t you have an enchantment devotion deck? This makes an Eidolon of Blossoms deck appealing.
My Rogue deck is basically a U/B faeries deck splashing Stinkdrinker and Looter Il-Kor.
And yes, Outcast is great, and I’ve been playing to since it was printed. I just cut Prowler because it feels a little weak and Borrowerr is a much more powerful and useful.
Ok, reigniting this thread. This deck got a great new addition in Brazen Borrower. The deck lacked disruption, which is what these tribal decks need to succeed. All it had before was Blackguard and maybe some sideboard Noggin Whack.
Even Rankle, Master of Pranks, is a possibility, though a bit expensive, it's a very powerful card.
I love brewing up new Sol Land decks in Legacy. The most successful Sol Land decks have creatures that are hatecards, either hatebears or hatemonsters.
I think Cavern of Souls is also super relevant for this type of archetype, unless you’re playing blue and can Force of Will your spells through.
Black does have cards like Unmask though, which can serve to clear the way for spells without slowing the deck down.
Fleshwrither is such a unique card, literally the only card in Magic with the ability Transfigure. Revoker, Fiend, and Chupacabra are my hatebears, while Fleshwrither acts as a tutor. Suggestions welcome.
It might just function as a replacement to Fauna Shaman, which sometimes saw play in my decks, in like 1 or 2 copies.

Something like this perhaps... Similar to my old but very successful Garruk Green.
What other new cards are good are there to fetch with Bellower and Empath?
Doesn’t work well with Arbor Elf, and probably just worse than Leyline of Abundance, though perhaps it can be played alongside it.
If there’s anyone still playing Soldier Stompy, it just got a potentially great new addition. I think this card could potentially replace Preeminent Captain.

4 Changeling Outcast

4 Oona's Blackguard
4 Spellstutter Sprite
4 Stinkdrinker Bandit
4 Brazen Borrower
4 Looter il-Kor

4 Polluted Delta
1 Watery Grave

3 Secluded Glen

2 Swamp

4 Thoughtseize
You could turn it into a pure Faerie deck with not too much effort; cut Stinkdrinker for Scion of Oona and replace Looter with something.
The problem with the Ninja is that it can only hit once reliably.
Borrower works great with the discard effects too!
This deck looks very close to a legitimately viable tribal deck. Borrower gave it some much needed disruption.

Dryad Arbor is been fantastic, since any fetchland can get me it, and so I always have a mana dorks for my Leyline.
I have 16 sources of turn 1 mana dork! Plus Dryad Arbor is basically a mana dork with flash.
I think Cavern of Souls is also super relevant for this type of archetype, unless you’re playing blue and can Force of Will your spells through.
Black does have cards like Unmask though, which can serve to clear the way for spells without slowing the deck down.

4 Chalice of the Void
3 Trinisphere
4 Nether Void
4 Chrome Mox
4 Unmask
Creatures: 22
4 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Mesmeric Fiend
4 Fleshwrither

1 Faceless Butcher
1 Phyrexian Obliterator
1 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
1 Rankle, Master of Pranks
4 Ancient Tomb

4 Cavern of Souls
2 Chains of Mephistopheles
4 Leyline of the Void
2 Massacre

2 Gate to Phyrexia
