I just realized the version I posted above doesn't have OUaT. Not sure how to fit it in, but I do think it should be included. This deck really wants to hit those turn 1 mana dorks. I think I'll have to cut some number of Ballistas which feels real bad.
EDIT:
Ok, so here's my updated version of Leyline Devotion. I've played 3 matches and I'm undefeated... :/ Maybe this deck is good. While it loses the Arbor Elf+Utopia combo and Garrulk+Utopia combo, it gains some other nice synergies and allows the deck to splash other colors much easier. Also, running only Forest lands is no longer a requirement.
You can also activate this combo with Nightshade Peddler or Basilisk Collar. Deathtouch is already very strong with Ballista, but I think this has too many requirements to make it work in Modern and two of the pieces are very mediocre on their own, Vraska and the deathtouch enabler.
The problem with Leyline is that you have to build around it a bit, which requires making sacrifices. It’s also makes the deck lack consistency, since the deck is much worse without it in the opening. I built was is probably the best Modern version of the Leyline Devotion though.
Now that I look at it, the deck could be fine tuned a a bit more, since I have 4x Finale the sideboard could be adjusted to take better advantage of that. Adding a Shalai, Voice of Plenty main deck is probably correct.
You can replace Finale with Chord fo Calling, not sure which is better for this deck.
I think it could be good for the non-traditional devotion decks. Like some sort of R/G aggro devotion deck, that can relibably turn it into a creature. You get a big indestructible beater that comes with reliable damage and lifegain and graveyard hate or mana ramp, for just three mana. That's a pretty nice package.
I'm pretty sure I've fooled around with R/G Aggro devotion in the past.
I remember playing Panglacial Wurm a while back. That card seems great now that I think about it more. It’s a great value card, and also essentially has Flash, which can be super helpful especially vs control or Walkers (not Baby Teferi).
So Oko is such a busted card, it feels wrong not including it in some Devotion list.
So here's a list
Originally I thought about making a deck more similar to my old Simic Devotion list, but I don't have the exact list handy, though I think I remember the composition basically.
My most successful Green Devotion deck was more of a midrange deck with the potential for very explosive starts. Oko fits well into that strategy methinks.
Since there's been some Pioneer talk, I thought it would be ok to talk about big green in Legacy.
I'm a Legacy player, and I also play a big green Legacy brew. It's pretty good, and I'd really like to take it to a tourny but I never go to tournaments unfortunately If i did, I think Green Devotion would have had a few more notable finishes at big tournaments.
So if you love big green decks, and you are a Legacy player, here's my most recent Green Sol Stompy Deck for Legacy. I spent a lot of time brewing this beast yesterday. I had made a similar list a while ago, because I tried to make the best Sol Stompy deck in every color. My main Legacy decks are both Blue and White(Solder/Human) Stompy decks, and this once wasn't as good as the others. With the addition of Once Upon a Time, I think it gets a lot better, so I've been excited to play it again. Minimal testing of this new version has been done, but I don't think any massive changes will be made.
Match Data: 5-1
VS. Lantern Control Win 2-1
VS. 4-Color KotR Win N/A
VS. 4c Goodstuff Win N/a
VS. Different Green Sol Stompy deck Win 2-0
VS. N/A Win N/A
Vs. 4c goodstuff w/ Oko Loss N/A
From creating this deck I came across Thorn Mammoth, a card that I didn’t pay much attention to before. This card has been very good in Legacy, it might be a good consideration in Modern.
I'm off the Leyline deck. You can't get away with playing Arbor Elf and Utopia Sprawl and that package is to important. Remember Garruk is great with Sprawl too. It's not worth it.
What do you mean “moved to Legacy”? All the cards in Modern are already in Legacy. And yes, I’m not surprised shops are happy with Pioneer, I could imagine it could be good for business.
I CAN’T imagine Pioneer will be a better format than Modern though.
Wolfbriar is both faster than Hornet Queen, an has the potential to be a MUCH better finisher. I've removed it from lists before, and always regretted it. The card is SOOO good in Green Devotion.
A problem with Leyline is that it's one of the cards that CAN be great in your opening hand, but is extremely mediocre any other time.
But here's a list I just threw together. I made a Leyline deck before OuaT existed and posted it, but I didn't care to find it. Devoted Druid is great with Leyline. Not only can it produce 4 mana, but with the vizier combo it can turn Leyline into a wincon.
Faerie Imposter is so good. It can rebuy and Ninja if they have a ground blocker, or rebuy any of the etb cards for value. Reusing Spellstutter is amazing, plus Imposter hits hard. DOuble the power of your typical 1 drop flyer, and only 1/3 less dmg than a flipped Delver. Ornithopter is just the ultimate enabler, and it’s not useless with Signal Pest.
The point of this deck is to not go to lategame really. You just want to kill them quick, and counter a few of their early spells that prevent you from doing so.
Cards like a Moonblade Shinobi and Mist-Syndicate Naga seem completely unnecessary. They are slow and there’s no need to be paying 3 mana for a 1/1 token, if you’re drawing tons of 1 mana creatures.
I recently added the singleton Commandeer because I love the spell and this deck can get away playing it. It replaced a single Spell Pierce.
Snapback has been my removal of choice in this deck because it fits with the tempo gameplay, and it can also save a Ninja. Force of Negation was a great new addition. The biggest bane to this deck is the printing of the Engineered Plague creature. This deck can’t really beat that card. Other than that, the deck is pretty darn good.
