I don't like having renegade rallier. Personally I'd rather not have a white card in the main because then I have to worry about fetching my white source for potentially drawing my one of and not being a dead card. I personally like eternal witness better as I can get back removal or discard also.

Chalice isn't a end all solution, needs backup like Ensnaring Bridge. Because Shadow decks will start playing more Abrupt Decays. And I don't think you can beat them fairly (Merfolk, Jund, Junk, Burn etc.) because they'll start playing white for Faith's Shield and then it'll get really bad. Then the only option is Eldrazi, Affinity or Combo to beat Shadow decks.

You can't be serious. You think faiths shield will do something? The way to beat this deck is to play fairly. Once everyone starts running path this deck has a much harder time trust me. No affinity won't keep this deck in check and neither will combo (its good matchups are ones where the opponent doesn't want to interact). Junk, snapcaster + path decks, or any deck with lingering souls will keep it in check. Trust me I've been playing this deck for weeks now and the Junk matchup is horrible because lingering souls + path is difficult for this deck. Hell grixis delver is tough too because of the all the removal.

It looks like the Traverse lists are still doing well. Here is the latest one note the 3 fatal pushes: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/557944#paper

I don't know about having gnarlwood dryad in in the sideboard. I would rather run Pia and Kiran instead as in grindy matchups this deck hits 4 mana fairly consistently (traverse helps with this).

Great to see a death's shadow list doing well without gix probes. I'll be first to admit I wasn't convinced on traverse but I can't argue with how well it's doing.

Do you think there's some room in the mainboard for 2-3 fatal pushes? Maybe take the LoTV out of main and into the side?

That's why I like the idea of noxious revival because it addresses the problem of fatal push as you can get back a death's shadow on top of being a versatile tool for the deck (e.g. timewalk opponent, stuck on one land and getting back a fetch, getting back a temur battlerage to help finish the game off, helps with the life loss). I'm going to run 4 to test it tomorrow and report how it does.

What about noxious revival in place of probe? It addresses the fatal push problem as we can recur our creatures back from the graveyard.

Plus it works well with mishra's bauble as you can look at the top of the opponents library and its something you don't want them to draw that turn you can noxious revival a less relevant card (like a fetch land) to the top and you essentially time walk them.

I really dont see how push is going to be an issue for us. The decks that wanted cheap efficient removal already had as much as they wanted before. We always have to fight through removal, what does it change that theres one more option for them. It's never been the efficiency of removal either but the amount in a hand that we needed to deal with.

What I think is interesting is how this card helps our deck. Oftentimes a goyf, thoghtknot, type creature just stonewalls us because or main removal is bolt. I think push really shines IN our deck not against it.

Hey Kithas ! Thanks for your answer. I think Fatal Push is a nightmare for Death's Shadow in modern. The reason is that before Aether Revolt there were 2 great 1 mana removal : Bolt and Path. As we know, only 1 of them was a treat for Death's Shadow. With the arrival of Fatal Push there is some Tier 1 or 2 deck that are gonna run a play set of both of those (Abzan, Esper) and other like Grixis control (which I think will be more popular) will run a play set of Push and Snapcaster.

I also agree with you that Fatal Push is a great add to our deck. I'll try to cut the white and use Push in side or even in main deck.

I don't think it's the end of Death's Shadow, but I do think the deck will have to adapt. I like Traverse, Kolaghan's Command and Inquisition MD for that. Anyway, we will see soon enough how the meta change. By that time, I will try to proxy it.

I have not tried that type of death shadow deck before but having those types of cards slows down the deck. How slow does the deck become when going that route? The appeal of having this deck is killing quickly on turns 2-4 but slowing it down all of a sudden makes matchups like tron, dredge, and affinity difficult.

I can see changing the list to slow things down a little bit but I don't see how those lists that run this are just a version of mini jund and then we might as well be running jund.

Since I haven't played the style of deck I'm curious on opinions on why this would be the way to go.

We don't know how the meta will switch with Fatal push and no use throwing the baby out with the bath water until the meta settles down. The stock list can continue to do well and changes to that list can be made to account for fatal push should that card change the meta.

For instance if fatal push really does become a problem maybe taking out the become immense and adding additional threats like gurmag angler instead can help us overwhelm opponents removal as that is our sideboard stragety anyway.

Hey guys ! I just build the Death's Shadow deck. I don't have Mishra's Bauble yet and I'm looking for a replacement. I know it has been talk a lot in the topic but I want your advice ! I'm thinking replacing the 4 Mishra's Bauble with : 1x Ghor-Clan Rampager, 2x Apostle's Blessing and a 4th Thoughtseize. In my meta, there is a lot of Grixis control, Jund and Junk. Do you have any better ideas? Thanks

I just built this deck last week and was waiting for my baubles to come in and damn is this deck different without baubles. My replacements were 1 rancor, 2 blossoming defense, and the 4th thoughtseize. Honestly I don't think there's really a direct replacement but it seems like your replacement cards are fine though again I'm new to this deck also so maybe someone with more experience can weigh in.

That being said I have a question about sideboard and noticed some lists run lingering souls instead of hooting mandrills. How effective has lingering souls been for people because it seems like hooting mandrills is the better choice?

  • posted a message on What is your LGS's attitude towards modern? Is it de-emphasised compared to other formats?
My LGS has stepped up modern support actually adding Tuesdays to the schedule now. Now I can play modern on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays but that's probably because its the CFB game center so they seem able to offer a lot more then other game stores.

Still no thopter combo deck? You know I really thought the sword of the meek unban would have a bigger impact on modern but so far I haven't seen any list do well using the thopter combo.

It might still be too early to call it a bust though.

It will depend a lot on whether Eye of Ugin gets the boot. If not, the best UR deck will need a gameplan to beat tron's inevitability in which case Blue Moon will probably thrive.

Tron is a small part of the metagame and will continue to be a small part because the format will be dominated by the linear uninteractive decks that Tron hates to play against. A control deck doesn't "need" a plan against it any more than it "needs" a gameplan against any random deck.

Also, Blue Moon is hardly the best UR deck against Tron. In fact, it might be one of the worst. At least UWR Control has a sort of a clock and has Path to Exile to deal with Wurmcoil Engine or Ulamog, plus Stony Silence is killer against the deck. Blue Moon, on the other hand, automatically loses if they don't draw Blood Moon, and still usually loses if they do draw Blood Moon because their lack of pressure means Tron just waits a few turns (while, again, being under no real pressure) and then hardcasts all their bombs anyway.

You can tell the people who don't know what they are talking about when they say things like "just play blood moon it rekts tron". What gets me is how prevalent the "Tron folds to blood moon" myth is.

I've even had people cast blood moon and just look at me like I should concede already. I actually had one guy go "on to game three?" because he landed a blood moon after I told him no I then proceeded to win the game. Make sure you back up blood moon with some pressure or at a least combo kill.

That being said maybe scapeshift can make a comeback though I'm not holding my breath if Wizards truly wants blue diversity then then need to ban something from Tron. I don't know if an eye of ugin ban would help though.

Regardless of how you feel about this Protour the other decks are now going to have to adapt or die. Eldarzi is not a deck that can be ignored now so the meta is going to eldarzi and the decks that can adapt and fight against it.

In that sense we should be seeing established lists look way different from before because they need to take into account the eldarzi menace.

I believe a lot of people would refer to that as 'warping the format'.

Yes, I agree with you and unfortunately that is the reality of what's happened at this Protour. No one built their decks taking Eldarzi into account and we'll be seeing that change now. I was hoping for a fun blue deck to pop up to reinvigorate my interest in this format but nothing so far. Honestly I don't feel like there's much that can be done against eldarzi atm without sacrificing your other matchups so I think I'm going to be taking a break from modern until the meta settles to something more reasonable.

It's not just the extra turn, it's one less mana to use for protection

If you wait an extra turn, you don't have one less mana to use for protection

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker is 5 mana, therefore you are already waiting an extra turn. If you want Kiki + Dispel backup, it's now turn 6.

IF you make your land drops that's a big problem.
