    Hey lgmhorus,

Is it possible for you to post critiques of Round 2? Those are still missing and I would like to have them to calculate scores for Top 8.

    Never mind.

Sorry Prophs, but I was really late with my crits, but it's there Grin

If you would lose life this turn, you gain that much life instead.
If an opponent would gain life this turn, they lose that much life instead.
You know the part of the story where it turns out the guy you thought was helping was really stabbing you in the back? This is that part.

Talking about Children of Korlis, maybe this would create less issues if it was a one time thing, like.

You gain life equal to the life you've lost this turn.
Each opponent loses life equal to life he or she gained this turn.

I don't know what you think you mean by that. Ravnica is by no means the benchmark for a balanced set in terms of power, and Lightning Helix has never been reprinted in a regular set.

A 10 point life swing for 2 mana is gross. This needs to cost along the lines of, I dunno, 2WB.

No, not in a regular set, in a Duel deck, but still. And I don't agree that Ravnica is a bad set to compare too. It is a set with very good cards, but not a broken set. And why not compare to the Helix, it is a pretty cool card, with an agressive design, just like Pay Day. I agree, for some people it might push a little too much, but I don't think so, and I think we have a pretty far comparison to work with.

    Oh, and it's not a 10 point swing, it's 8.

You gain 5 life. Target opponent loses 5 life.

Well, that's almost equivalent to Pay Day. Guess I've figured out how to design magic cards.

Seriously, I think your comment is almost not worth replying to, but I will anyway. I believe you are comparing your "improvement" to how Pay day has bumped Lightning Helix's damage and life gain by one. But what you are not seeing is that the bump of 1 life and 1 life loss comes at the expense of hitting creatures and the flexibility of an instant. Seriously, I have RW deck with 4 Helixes, and I can honestly tell that I use it far more on creatures than on players. Each card has its pros and cons against each other. MOON-E was pretty clear on the intentions of Pay Day: to push direct drain as much as possible. Nobody is questioning if this card is strong. It is, very much so. But I think he went everywhere needed on design to make this happen in a plausible way. The CD cost is justified, as we have a black part and a white part. Yes, black can do it alone, but adding the white justifies each part doing better.

But let's go even further: Helix is half Lightning Bolt half(kinda) Healing Salve. Wizards made perfectly clear that the bolt is too strong, that's why we have Shock. Yet Helix not only was printed on Ravnica, it even came back later on, so it's not a design they regret or think was wrong in any way. It's ok to push the boundaries, but you have to do it correctly, and MOON-E right every right note in this case. Nobody is arguing that it pushes, it was the beginning of this design, but I see absolutely nothing wrong. Please look again at Helix and ALL differences between it and Pay Day. Everything is relevant here.

I think it has it's pros and cons against Dispel. Most of the time, this will be a worse card, but it does work against things with flash. I like it and I would leave this as is.

I think the point here is: is this card very very good? Yup, sure is. But is it TOO good ? Or better yet, is this printable? I think so. This is in power level is almost equal to Lightning Helix.

Honestly, I think the closest to this card is Lightning Helix, much more than Boros Charm. And it justifies the cost of Pay Day. While this is very aggressive, Helix is much much more flexible. At 3 life drained, this much worse, because even if this damage can be prevented, the flexibility of board control is much much more relevant.

And BTW, Pay Day is absolutely awesome! Kudos!!

    Tressan War-Swine
    Creature - Boar (C)
Coordinate - If Tressan War-Swine would attack or block, you may pay and tap it instead. If you do, target creature gets +3/+3 until end of turn. (This creature doesn't attack or block.)
    3/3

    Hunting Hound
    Creature - Hound (C)
Coordinate - If Hunting Hound would attack or block, you may pay and tap it instead. If you do, target creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn. (This creature doesn't attack or block.)
    1/1

    Trained Drake
    Creature - Drake (U)
    Flying
Coordinate - If Trained Drake would attack or block, you may pay and tap it instead. If you do, target creature gets +2/+2 and gains flying until end of turn.
    2/2

    Ashbreath Ravager
    Creature - Elemental Horror (R)
    Intimidate
Coordinate - If Ashbreath Ravager would attack or block, you may pay and tap it instead. If you do, target creature gets +3/+1 and gains intimidate and "Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, that player sacrifices a permanent" until end of turn.
    3/1

Honestly, this is a much better mechanic than your first one. It is flavorful, works well, and has plenty of room for shenannigans. If you are keeping always the bonus equal to p/t, I wish that it was directly tied to it, but that's my suggestion.

    Gelid Gust 1U
    Instant (C)
Tap target creature. It doesn't untap during its controller's next untap step.
Tempest (When you cast this spell, copy it if a spell was cast before it this turn.)

    Focused Tsunami 3U
    Sorcery (C)
Return target nonland permanent to its owner's hand.
Tempest (When you cast this spell, copy it if a spell was cast before it this turn.)

    Soilstagger R
    Sorcery (C)
Target creature can't block this turn.
Tempest (When you cast this spell, copy it if a spell was cast before it this turn.)

    Forked Thunder 2R
    Instant (C)
Forked Thunder deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
Tempest (When you cast this spell, copy it if a spell was cast before it this turn.)

Tempest is an ok mechanic, but it could be more explored. You gave us four cards that show the simplest use of tempest, only that.

    Squadron Pilot
    Creature - Viashino Knight (C)
Skyknight (You may pair this creature with an unpaired creature with flying you control. They remain paired for as long as you control both.)
As long as Squadron Pilot is paired with a creature with flying, it gets +2/+2 and has flying.
    3/3

    Volcano Patrol
    Creature - Human Knight (C)
Skyknight (You may pair this creature with an unpaired creature with flying when either enters the battlefield. They remain paired for as long as you control both of them.)
As long as Volcano Patrol is paired with a creature with flying, it gains flying and first strike.
    2/2

    Steampeak Lookout
    Creature - Human Knight (C)
Skyknight (You may pair this creature with an unpaired creature with flying when either enters the battlefield. They remain paired for as long as you control both of them.)
As long as Steampeak Lookout is paired with a creature with flying, it has flying and “: Untap Steampeak Lookout and the creature it’s paired with.”
    2/2

Sorry, Rider, but I think your mechanic is pretty much redundant with Soul Bound. You managed to create nice cards with it, but it is still Soul Bound with a tiny bit difference.

Yeah, you, Profani, and TC. Made a mistake there.

I was thinking about this for a while, but I decided to move on with it because I feel like some discrepancies in judging would be better than each player having to critique 30 cards.

What do you mean by your last proposal? I'm rereading it over and over again but I don't understand.

To be quite honest, I would rather keep on team's review. CCL does not require very lengthy judgings like other competitions, so reviewing 10 or so cards is not that much of a problem.

Solesticio is absolutely correct. This kind of T3 actually become a game of luck a bit. Sure, you can have killing card, by far the best of your team, but if you go against cards from other teams, you can go down in points when you deserve more. Also, this way, a play can get 3-9 points, always. You can design a horrible card that everyone hates, you still get 3 points. And you can have the best card ever design in the history of MTG, and you would only get 9 points. Does not seem fair to me.

Sorry, I know this belongs on the discussion thread, but since this was brought up here, I figure I could give my 2 cents.

    Let's heigthen some more

    Encapsule 1U
    Instant (C)
    Target spells gains shroud.
Heighten , Discard this card: Add Encapsule’s effect to the effect of target instant or sorcery spell. You make all the choices.)
If you heighten Encapsule, instead heightened spell has shroud.

    Script for a Requiem
    Instant (U)
(Spells without mana costs can’t be played)
Heighten , Discard this card: Add Script for a Requiem’s effect to the effect of target instant or sorcery spell. You make all the choices.)
When you heigthen Script for a Requiem destroy target creature with the same color as the heightened spell. It can’t be regenerated.

    Blessing of Souls 2WW
    Sorcery (U)
Target player gains 2 life for each creature in play.
Heighten , Discard this card: Add Blessing of Souls’s effect to the effect of target instant or sorcery spell. You make all the choices.)
Feedback — Whenever Blessing of Souls or the spell it heightens is target of a spell or ability put a 1/1 white Angel with flying in play.

As the last winner, if you are ok with it, I'm taking over

    Clear-Sight Monk :1mana::symw:
    Creature - Cat Monk (C)
Clarity (This enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it for each colorless mana spent to cast it.)
    2/1

I like it. It's pretty simple, well ballanced, and gives a good enough boost if you manage to clarity it into play.

    Dread Reaver :2mana::symb:
    Creature- Demon Soldier
Shield 3 (This creature enters the battlefield with three shield counters on it. Remove X shield counters from this: Prevent the next X damage that would be dealt to this creature this turn.)
    4/1
Formed from the pits of hell’s forges.

It's not a great mechanic, but I see some potential in it. The problem is that this is a pretty white effect, and you choose to display it in a black card. Sorry, I just don't see black going there.

With that, the winner is Egak. So, next task:

IIW: Something that generates colorless mana.
