  • posted a message on What is the best Collected Company deck that doesn't use Elves?
I have Legacy Elves except that I'm using Collected Companies there until I get Glimpse of Natures. Once I have those, my CoCos are free and I was thinking it would be cool to build a decent modern deck with them. But I don't want elves in two formats. My first guess was something with Reflector Mage, Tireless Tracker, and Jadelight Ranger, and probably a bunch of other 3 CMC creatures with ETB effects, and BoP and/or Noble Hierarch (which I don't have). I couldn't find a deck in the Established Decks section. Is it considered viable?

  • posted a message on My friend has rendered my monoblack deck useless, help?
Yep, while the recommendations about how to change your deck to beat his may all work, at the core the problem isn't with your deck, but with how your friend is playing the game. He only has one opponent: you. Even when you are playing multi-player, it's clear he considers you the main threat, unless he's also adding in hate cards against the other players (which I get the impression is not the case). This is not how the game should be played. If you can't convince him to play against other people when you aren't around, then the best strategy is to simulate other players by building other decks that those cards won't hose. Force him to realize that such a single-focus strategy isn't going to work in the long run, and he'll soon get tired of drawing those graveyard-hating cards against your other decks that don't care about graveyards.

Lightning Bolt aside, Jhoira is basically giving Affinity Glimpse of Nature for almost all the non-land in the deck. But the cost probably makes all the difference. By the time you play this in Affinity, your whole hand should be dumped already, unless it requires rewriting the entire strategy of the deck to hold back cards to get maximum benefit from Jhoira. I dunno.

  • posted a message on Mox Amber
I am not prepared to call it a "bad card" but I think it's pretty clearly worse than any other mox ever printed. I'm doubtful it will see play in Modern/Legacy/Vintage, while every single other mox is a format staple in at least one of those three. I know there are a few god-hand combinations that this goes well with, but the variance is just too high to make it reliable enough to use. There is a lot of design room available to have the card be a similar concept but pushed just a little bit more. I'm thinking of the way that the Dragons of Tarkir "dragons matter" spells allowed you to reveal a dragon from your hand in addition to relying on one in play.

  • posted a message on Planeswalker design theory
I have looked through all the planeswalkers to be sure. Other than the ones that say "can be your Commander" and Garruk Relentless which has a condition for transforming, in general planeswalkers only have loyalty abilities. I am wondering why this is. There is nothing in the rules preventing them from designing a planeswalker with an ETB effect (for example, they could design a Sorin that makes a Vampire token when he enters the battlefield, and then have one ability give Vampires +2/+2 until end of turn, and another ability that gives a benefit for sacrificing a creature, so that there is a lot of strategy that plays into the ETB effect), or a static ability (like a Gideon that gives all soldiers you control +1/+1). Is the reason that the text would be too crowded? They have made the font smaller in the past for cards that require it, particularly with rares or mythics. Seems like there is a whole world of design space here.

History of Benalia art is really feeling like an awesome throwback to old days of Magic. Even though Noah Bradley is a relative newcomer to Magic art.

Hoping they explore putting a Planeswalker as a rare again in a set.

The designers have said in a recent set design article that Planeswalkers are always mythic.

That said, the recent rules changes that make planeswalkers legendary now allows the possibility of non-legendary planeswalkers, and if they ever explore that area then I would say there is a good chance for non-mythic planeswalkers.

Hm. The card that "makes me want to brew a crazy deck the most" is definitely Lich's Mastery. I can't believe they basically improved on the original Lich. Now you are safe from losing the game due to an opponent's Disenchant. Plus you're also safe from losing the game due to library running out, poison counters, and anything else that gives an alternate win condition. Plus, they added in that you can exile cards from the graveyard in addition to hand/battlefield. Sure, it's 6 instead of 4. But still, very exciting card.

Card that will probably have the most impact on Standard: Llanowar Elves. They even printed an ideal T-2 followup.

Card that will have the most impact on Modern/Legacy: Damping Sphere, and I'm getting 4 as soon as I can. That said, there are so many options for hate cards these days, it's hard to be sure this will be a better hate card in sideboards than the other choices already present.

  • posted a message on Cards that should be reprinted to enter the Modern card pool
I think Regrowth could easily be reprinted without damaging Modern or Standard. It was one of the original "restricted in Vintage, banned in everything else" cards, but over time it lost its Vintage restriction and has been unbanned in Legacy for some time. It sees almost no play, because decks in those formats don't operate the way the used to and they just have no need for the card. I'm not even sure it would see a lot of play in Modern, but it would be cool to have it available anyway. I also think, while it would see a fair amount of use in Standard, it would not be degenerate in any way, so that obstacle to reprinting is surmountable.

  • posted a message on APAC basic lands reprinted in Global Series
Yeah... They have never explicitly said so, but I find it unlikely that they will ever reprint these. This is because these lands were printed exclusively for the purpose of giving collectors something rare to own, just the same as the gurus, euros, judge foils, arenas, etc... The only thing that surprised me was when they reprinted one of each basic land type of the full arts from Zendikar in Battle for Zendikar (along with printing a bunch of new ones). I did not think they would do that because, again... the only reason to have special versions of basic lands is for collectors.

This would be like requesting them to literally reprint beta basic lands. No reason other than to screw over collectors.

I just logged in, and saw that I had 2 notifications. I clicked on the bell, and all I got was "see all notifications". Then I clicked on that, and this is all I got (see attached image):

So I know that there were at least two replies to something I posted since last time I was here, but I have no idea which comments they were. Is there any way to retrieve this information?

I'm gonna go against the grain and predict that JTMS will not break the format at all. In fact, it's only going to see play as a 1-2 of in a couple decks and most of those are underdog decks right now.

Really speaks to how messed up Standard is if they're having to ban cards that are nonentities in formats like Modern.

You hit the nail on the head. How are you going to get people to invest money in decks where, not only are the cards unplayable outside of Standard, but they may also end up unplayable in Standard as well as the result of a ban?

The problem isn't that the cards are too powerful. As you point out, if that were the case, these cards would see some play in Modern at least.

My suggestion is a major change to how the Standard legal list is formed. I would propose that certain stabilizing cards be legal in Standard all the time, regardless of when they were last printed. I would propose for consideration: Doom Blade, Mana Leak, Lightning Strike, Disenchant, and Naturalize. All of these cards have been printed a bazillion times (maybe Mana Leak should see a reprint, not sure) such that they will be cheap to obtain forever. These cards help prevent certain degenerate strategies from getting out of control.

Energy was a huge failure on the part of R&D. It's not too powerful (when is the last time you've seen Aetherworks Marvel in Modern?). The problem is that they neglected to print anything that attacks Energy that is playable if you happen to not be playing against Energy.

    Ruined Lighthouse
    Land (U)
You may reveal Ruined Lighthouse from your opening hand. If you do, each player draws a card, then discards a card.
T: Add C to your mana pool.

Pretty neat idea. Definitely helps some decks (combo) more than others (aggro). In game 1 it could be dangerous to play not knowing what your opponent's deck is, so I think it's reasonably balanced.

    Moonbow WGG
    Enchantment (R)
You may play any number of lands during your turn. You may not play non-basic lands.

I considered making it UWG but concluded that made it virtually impossible to cast in a deck able to make use of it. Also, fun-fact: This is not the first card to contain the word "moonbow" in the name, but the only one to have it as the only word in the name.

  • posted a message on Unstable foil basics - when to buy?
I collect rare basic lands. I have everything I want except the "judge foil" set. I had intended to get the foil Unstable basics, but was dismayed to find them already at a price equal or exceeding the price of Unhinged foil basics. I thought it would take several years to reach that point. I was wondering if this price point is temporary and they are expected to come down, or if I should buy them now as it won't get any better.
