Hey guys, long time Jund/k player joining this side. Built the SaffronOlive deck last week and its all finally arrived. Going to be playing the Trading Post/Spine version until i can get the Chalice's i need for real U Tron.
No Reserved List Legacy? New-Frame Modern (M15 onwards)? Not sure I like any of the ideas coming to mind...
An M15 onwards 'modern' would be pretty interesting. It would be completely different in deck make up to modern without having shocklands and enemy fetches along with a huge number of key cards. It would utterly kill affinity, infect, merfolk, scapeshift, tron, ad nauseam, storm and many other decks.
I like modern but the problem is there's very few cards each set that can actually fit into modern decks so removing 11 years of sets would be huge.
Current Modern is turn 4, but it might still be too fast for Wizards, and it's getting harder for them to introduce new Modern-playable cards if they must past through Standard.
I feel like the card pool is too small for a format of M15 and on, at least right now. Though i am sure the new card frames have something to do with the new format.
I feel like the biggest issue is finding a place to start from. I dont think they would try another Extended type format as its just a smaller Modern or a slightly bigger Standard. But if they were to make a new format i assume it would involve allowing players to play all the fun, nuts cards from the previous Master's sets. Why reprint all of these cards if only a few people will be able to use them for Legacy and maybe EDH. A new, non-rotating format is the most likely option. I imagine it would be similar to Modern/Legacy in terms of power and the card pool but a good way to avoid it being the same as those formats would mean either insane bannings or restrict cards (but then its just like Commander or Tiny Leaders).
Idk, i just dont want the prices of the format to get as bad or worse than Modern.
I think its a good thing. If Wizards starts mass reprinting staples for everyone we will look alot like YuGiOh which is ******* sad. 10-25% across the board is still a big hit to those that do get reprinted. Modern Masters is good at what it does, it reprinted some staples and they are the cheapest versions of those cards out there. Without MM2 and MM1 prices would likely be ******* nuts. All im saying is small print runs are a hell of a lot better than just not getting them.
Modern Masters has been a great product but they cant do an unlimited print run like with a Standard set. Maybe if there arent as many staples in the set sure, maybe, but then we have a set with jank and a few chase mythics and buying the sealed product isnt worth it.
Ive been playing a few brews with pretty good success.
UW Superfriends (more or less)
Really slow, grindy deck, trades counters for walkers. Elspeth, Gideon, 4 MD Wraths, Jace, Tamiyo, Narset, its protect the queen.
UR Through the Breach
I have two different versions built, the one sleeved up is basically Blue Moon with TTB/Emrakul and lots of good value spells.
Second runs Pentad Prism for a surprize turn 3 kill (happened more often than you would think).
Also about 70% of the way through with a deck that has 38 lands MD finished and sleeved. Life from the Loam/Seismic Assault is good. Though this is an awful deck to play unless youre playing against control decks/small creature decks all day.
$130 is not that low price for a card but it's worth in this case. In any case being it too much or not it will not drop as long as there are people who are willing to invest so much money for it.
It's only worth it because we've tricked ourselves into thinking that way. It's only ever been printed in a small set many years ago, then reprinted in limited release sets with upshifted rarity. It is nothing but a cheap creature that attacks on the ground with no evasion and no abilities. And yet it's the most expensive card in Modern, and the single most expensive card not on the reserve list. No other card in Modern costs more than $100, and those that are close are things like Liliana of the Veil and Jace. Tarmogoyf's price is a pure reflection of Wizards making choices for reprints that deliberately leave the price high. Even after MM2, it's still the most expensive card by a considerable margin.
I felt fine buying mine at 150 each. Once you have a good paying job magic cards become pretty easy to get.
One of the reasons i could see for banning something in Affinity is that almost every sideboard has multiple pieces of interaction, banning it opens up more options for sideboard use, fair decks might do better.
Opinions on Through the Breach? Is it going to spike anytime soon or stay steady? I need 2 more for my new Modern deck and i was going to wait a pay period so i have a little extra money but im contemplating just biting the bullet right now.
Eldritch Moon is going to get us a Big Bad Something. Not going to get into the debate about what that "Something" is, but it's going to happen. If nothing else, a good Big Bad will cause a short-term Breach spike as speculators go nuts. If it's a decent card, it might increase Breach's profile generally. Barring an EMA reprint, Breach is going to go nowhere but up for the rest of the year.
Just snagged 2 Lightly Played copies for around 23.50 each. I feel comfortable picking them up for this price even if it gets reprinted.

How likely is it that Jund receives a banning in the coming year? It seems like the only good fair deck (which makes me think its safe) but im still not sure, they seem to like to ban anything that exists for a long time.
Modern doesn't work as Legacy. Otherwise Modern would be... Legacy.
I think what you meant is "Modern doesn't work."
Look at how frequently cards need to be banned from Legacy, then look at Modern.
Look at how diverse the deck archetypes are in Legacy, then look at Modern.
Look at how many powerful card options each color has in Legacy, then look at Modern.
Look at the difference between Tier 1 - Tier 2 decks in Legacy, then look at Modern.
Do you think perhaps there's a reason people look to Legacy as an example of a well balanced, self regulating format and want to apply those principles to Modern?
Look at Legacy, its blue dominated. That isnt going to happen any time soon without Force.
I like Modern, there are fair decks but they just cost an arm and a leg. But it doesnt mean you cant play other decks.

EDIT: Spelling
My main deck is Jund which is alright against Burn. But i do have to say Bogles has a pretty good Burn matchup and is cheap still.
