Jun 12, 2019RxPhantom posted a message on A New and Exciting BeginningAnd just like that, this community gets split down the middle. This whole thing just got way too complicated. Will MTGNexus just become another underwhelming offshoot like No Goblins Allowed? Or will its potentially runaway success cause Salvation to wither and fade? Are Salvation's staff a united front after this announcement? What was once a simple migration of a community just got a fresh injection of uncertainty.Posted in: Articles

May 28, 2019RxPhantom posted a message on The End of an EraThis place has essentially been my Magic home for the last five years. It always felt like the Magic forum, or at least the only one that mattered. I'll be happy to go to the new destination, but this is indeed sad news. It's news that hurts my heart more than I'd have thought it would.Posted in: Articles

Why on Earth would this ever be a bad thing? I actively want cards to have lower prices. I want my playset of enemy fastlands to not cost an arm and a leg. Is there some sort of unspoken prestige that a set is blessed with if it's packed with expensive cards? -

Jun 18, 2016RxPhantom posted a message on The Magic Market Index for June 16, 2016Not the end of the world. I probably could've said something earlier, but it felt kinda nitpicky unless I had other points to discuss. As I said, the work that must go into this thing every week must be staggering. It is much appreciated and I look forward to it every week.Posted in: Articles

Jun 18, 2016RxPhantom posted a message on The Magic Market Index for June 16, 2016As always, I love this article and appreciate the work that must go into it every week. A few quick notes though:Posted in: Articles
1. Manakin was not reprinted in EMA. You may be thinking of Millikin, but that can't be $4, right?
2. Sidisi, Undead Vizier has been misspelled during its entire tenure on the list.
3. While the original art may be classic, I wouldn't describe the current Necropotence art as "undesirable."
4. I totally agree on many of these bad rarity upshifts. -
Jan 2, 2016RxPhantom posted a message on Why Spoilers are ImportantThanks for your response. Regarding the length, I think I was expecting more analysis, but I kept getting the background information. Maybe my expectations were skewed. Said background info was certainly needed, but it seemed like a bit much. Then again, I'm not an author and maybe my judgment is poor here. I still appreciate your writing style in general, and will keep my eye out for your name in the byline.Posted in: Articles
I also understand what you mean about marketing, but in this particular case, there still remains quite a bit of damage to be repaired. The colorless mana symbol was just plopped on us with no explanation of its mechanical function or its effect, if any, on the game in the long term. Something that big needed those things explained upon introduction, and this leak really muddied the waters there.
I think I see what you're getting at with Trick's article. I'd say that the whole journalism rant seemed overblown (one of those nuggets I spoke of previously), but I think he made a few salient points too. I'll agree that Maro and Kyle did a better job of getting their points across.
Good talk. -
Jan 1, 2016RxPhantom posted a message on Why Spoilers are Important"I contend that leaks are good because it allows us a view into a product without hype or marketing helping to cloud our judgment."Posted in: Articles
Seriously? The Wizards hype machine just clouds your judgment like the Shadow, huh? Why don't we take a look at a few of the threads that sprang up in the wake of this particular leak. The confusion and speculation surrounding the colorless mana symbol is still ongoing. If you're telling me that this is good for the community, then I'd have to disagree.
Also, your characterization of Trick's article was way off base, like so many other people on this site. Contrary to your assertions, he did not imply that this was the community's fault. I even went back and read it again when I saw that. Nothing. There was, however, plenty of reasonable explanation peppered with a few nuggets that strained credulity, but that's about it.
Finally, this article was full of inconsequential fluff. You're clearly a talented writer (which I very much appreciate), but next time, do a better job of getting to the point. -
Dec 17, 2015RxPhantom posted a message on The Magic Market Index for December 16, 2015I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate this series. Not really kind of stuff that leads to a lot of discussion in the comments, but I'm sure I'm far from the only person that appreciates it.Posted in: Articles

Thoughts on the similar Angel's Tomb?
One card that I see a lot of mono-green players sleep on is Nissa's Pilgrimage. In mono-green, it's strictly better than Kodama's Reach and Cultivate.
The deck's entire ramp package is:
Sol Ring
Exploration
Llanowar Elves
Elvish Mystic
Emerald Medallion
Nature's Lore
Sakura-Tribe Elder
Nissa's Pilgrimage
Kodama's Reach
Cultivate
Vernal Bloom
Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
I think this is the right way to evaluate the card, especially since it can slide into any deck that may not typically be able to deal with those permanent types. Like pretty much every single sword of this cycle, it's not designed for Modern playability.
Sword of Spite and Malice
EDIT: Apparently, Spite and Malice is some card game, but it still sounds cool as hell.
secondthird ever trilobite in Magic, with the first having debuted relatively recently. Apparently Electryte was errata'd at some point, probably around the same time.I wish I could get a commander with this effect tacked on, but hell, I still may make a deck designed to get this out and abuse it. Phew! What a neat card.
Command Tower (obviously, but I hadn't seen it mentioned so )
Rupture Spire/Transguild Promenade/Gateway Plaza
Fellwar Stone
Darksteel Ingot
Mana Geode
You could also throw in Celestial Dawn. It'll make fixing irrelevant.
