A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era
  • posted a message on MDFC are gonna show up in kaldheim and strixhaven
Bad news imo. Not because i think the mechanic is inherently weak or boring (well, i do, but whatever), but because i don't it's a good fit for "viking plane" and "mage school" plane.
I think this is really missing the major selling point of MDFC. They aren't to be the most flashy or exciting cards ever. They're the glue that makes things possible that never were before. They let you hide complexity from newbies by making nice, clean, simple cards that fill multiple roles in multiple decks. It also lets you do things like instants and sorceries the set that because you can put a creature on one side and an instant/sorcery on the other. It will help massively with as fan issues in addition to complexity and they have all the versatility of a charm/split card. People were already jamming extra lands into their landfall limited decks. This lets you jam a whole hell of a lot of extra lands into your deck. It lets you jam a whole ton of artifacts/ enchantments into decks without worrying about disenchant being a million times more powerful than it normally is. You could even print one that's a vanilla creature on both sides with different creature types for tribal. This is a mechanic for the people that are excited for the nuts and bolts of Magic to celebrate, not that flashy thing that's going to wow. It probably is the reason core sets have died, though. It presents the expert player a difficult choice while giving the newbie a highly grokkable card that isn't littered with text they won't understand. Sure, I don't see them often being powerful enough for competitive eternal formats, but that's the case with most cards ever printed. When you see them, just ignore them just like you ignore Grizzly Bears or the 9000th 3/3 for 4 with marginal ability.

So, what, exactly, is wrong with Fatal Push? Is it no longer a staple or something? It still seems to be rather pricy for an uncommon, so I'd assume it is.

This is certainly one spicy meatball. Yeah, it's too slow for "real" magic, but it's gotten dumber and dumber over the years when you get it rolling like Sovreigns of Lost Alara. WTF +20/+20 out of nowhere? That's just silly.

  • posted a message on [2XM] face to face games - Treasure mage - Sundering Titan
Sundering Titan certainly has historical value to the game. It's certainly not the most fun card, but it is very powerful and that's a big part of it. We haven't seen cards like it again and it lets the griefers do their griefing in Double Masters limited. It's like Stasis, Ensnaring Bridge, Blood Moon, etc. relics of the past and the kind of thing we'll probably never see again in new cards. It's kind of like the Sinkhole masters reprint. I don't think it's really played anywhere, but it's a good reminder of just how unfun this kind of thing is for people that didn't live through it and think maybe it wasn't so bad. It's also for the people that enjoy griefing people.

I am honestly disappointed. The power level and the color balance are okay overall. But waiting for 1 year to get any new Angel creatures and than just getting a reprint is a major let down for me. I was hoping for at least 2 uncommons. Instead we got some angel token generators. Sigh...
Zendikar is next which is known for angels. I'd be surprised if commander legends didn't have some as well.

  • posted a message on Cards Banned for Racist Imagery and/or Text
I certainly heavily disagree with the decision even if it came from noble intentions. Banning stuff you dislike, no matter how strongly you dislike it, isn't the answer. That's just going to drive a wedge between the sides and distract from the real issue. Honestly, what I think might really help is to actually give racism its platform and let it openly debate its heart out. If no one steps up to debate for the racist perspective, someone should play devil's advocate and really give it its time in the spotlight. So, exactly how well is it going to hold up against the harsh glare of facts?

I personally feel that all this tearing down statues and moral purity is just an attempt to stir the pot or if successful, the chance to claim false victory. The triumph of gay marriage didn't come from banning things. It came from people realizing that "the gays" weren't some evil other that existed somewhere else. Gay people were their friends and family. Gay people were their idols. It wasn't so long ago that I was the first LGBT person quite a few people had ever knowingly met and been friends with. Now, it is a little more challenging with visible physical characteristics since you can't come out as black or whatever Smile but being white, I've actually experienced racist treatment from older black people who I often even ended up becoming friends with.

I could see Lightning Bolt. It's actually stronger in older formats where it kills basically everything. In standard, people actually play creatures expensive enough that they could have 4+ toughness that aren't named Tarmogoyf. Yeah, it's strong but I don't remember people complaining about it in standard when it was in standard. Now, it obsoleting other burn is accurate, but how much interesting burn do we get? We don't tend to get lots of cool riders like when Wrath of God went away. Burn is usually just straight forward damage and I quite enjoyed the era of conditional 4 damage burn.

As far as mythic french vanilla, it could also be Darksteel Colossus. I still like good ol Darksteel. I doubt it's anything that was in commander 2020, though. Yeah, Baneslayer is possible but I'd rather have Robot.

It could very well be promo art for the winter set. They took Sorin out of it and if Emrakul is returning which Mark Rosewater has repeatedly answered questions about, it seems like the art would be fitting.

Darksteel Colossus just ain't it anymore, but the other two are real cards at least.
Hey now, good ol Darksteel Colossus is still cool. It just has a lot more competition than back when I was in college. Still, the only one that clearly outclasses it in 1vs 1 is blightsteel and that thing is a risk in multiplayer where you probably aren't running other infect so it's a waste unless it kills them and it can get stolen.

I think Jumpstart is being confused with Mystery booster. Jumpstart is open 2 boosters, shuffle together, you have a prebuilt deck.

At this point they should just alter their time line a lot more. Push all of the releases way out. Push all of the rotations way out. The world isn't going to get back to normal until maybe January 2021. Their is going to a large virus 2nd wave once it's warm outside.
That's highly unlikely, especially with all the other card games out there still making regularly scheduled releases. The only other one I've seen push back releases was Transformers and that's also a Wizards product. There's really no reason for Wizards to throw away millions of dollars in revenue they can generate from selling paper where they can and online everywhere. Yeah, that's bad for the stores that can't sell now, but there isn't really much you can do about that.

Yeah, it can double Coffers, but if you're mono/heavy black, you're probably already running a bunch of tutors and can easily dig out Coffers + a land that can copy Coffers. How many Coffers do you really need? It could also make a lot of mana if it copies Cradle, but from decks I've seen use it, once again, how much mana do you really need? It can be Worn Powerstone if you spot a bounceland but it's certainly not a broken card like some people have described it as. It can also sometimes become a creature like the Time Spiral artifacts people don't play or possibly blow itself up to destroy a land, but all of this is conditional on appropriate lands being on the battlefield. It's kind of like Clone, so much potential, but is kind of meh plenty of the time.

It would be a really bizarre card if it couldn't tap for mana considering that's what nearly every land in Magic does. I'm not really sure this card is all that amazing, though. Sure it's better than Manalith but the other abilities of lands are severely overcosted because they're on lands unless you count a few overpowered exceptions. It's a neat card that's going to be clutch once in a while but the rest of the time,it's Manalith.

I'd personally argue that Beast Within/Chaos Warp are acceptable cards. Yeah, green creature kill and red enchantment kill are kind of no nos, but Beast Within leaves them with a 3/3 creature that from the flavor burst out of the other creature. It's weird in general but perfectly fitting for New Phyrexia. Chaos Warp also is a very random effect that can backfire on you big time. Yeah, it gives you enchantment removal but they might get a Blightsteel instead. As far as In One Bite, it's perfectly fine. A guy is getting eaten by a dinosaur. Nothing is ever going to be perfect flavor. Even if you make it green, you have birds, bees, butterflies, ants, saprolings, all kinds of things eating a 50 foot tall statue. Most creatures couldn't realistically wield a Loxodon Warhammer, nevermind Colossus Hammer, but they can in the card game. An ice elemental can wield a flaming sword. A snake can wear boots. You can murder vampires, zombies, and spirits. A plane can drive a race car that's driving a train.
