Hard to say, but your playgroup at work should be very difficult for you to beat. Humans, control and BGx decks are some tough matchups for GDS in general. Merfolk isn't exactly a pushover either. Maybe it's the skill level of your colleagues?

Just looks like a bad mashup of Jund, DSJ and GDS to me.

TBR makes you want to go fast. Ooze makes you go slow. Tarmogoyf wants to be big. Angler shrinks it. Angler wants to be in play as early as possible. No Scours or Baubles make this pretty hard to accomplish. Three maindeck Trophies means you'll be ramping your opponent quite a bit, which is the last thing an aggro deck wants to do.

Why would you want Triumph against Tron? Wurmcoil, Thragtusk and World Breaker are all pretty miserable targets and if Ulamog's on the table then you've already lost anyway.

Also, I’m still not seeing how Triumph wouldn’t be sweet against BGx decks? Can someone explain? Attrition MU’s where CA matters and every creature is must kill, how is Triumph not good there? It even seems good against Death’s Shadow decks, as long as you watch out for Snapcaster. I’m not trying to be contrary, I’m just surprised that there’s such little love for the card. I’m not seeing its uselessness like y’all are.

You're still giving your opponent options. Confidant is a must-kill, and with Push or Bolt or Terminate or Decay or Trophy you know 100% you will get rid of it. Now what if you're holding an edict effect and he also has a Goyf on the table, or a Treetop Village with two mana open? Now Bob sticks and you've basically lost the game on the spot.

Spot removal > edict effects in Modern. Nobody plays edict effects outside of LOTV for a reason, but we've addressed this already.

If you're still not convinced, playtest Triumph against BGx decks and see how you like it. When it hits the sweet spot of killing Kalitas and making your opponent discard a card and you take over the game from there, yeah it'll be pretty good. Whenever your opponent gets to choose though, I'm guessing not so much.

Also, again, what would you cut for it?

Why don't you test a rule that makes starting or not starting a real decision, and not just "I hope to win the roll so I can start"?

What would a rule like that look like, in your opinion?

No reason for Emrakul to go anywhere for the time being unless UR Breach takes off out of nowhere for some incomprehensible reason.

And i don't have a problem with Titan and Phoenix being around because both decks can be attacked quite well by fair decks like GDS or Golgari Rock.

Titan is a very tough matchup for the Rock, so that's simply not true.

So, some questions from before the lock on the last page right after the weekend fireworks.

    1.

@ktk: I tried to find you on Twitter, but I suck at searching. Has any deck, in a global sense, had such a weekend as this outside of Eldrazi (aka the most broken this format has ever been)? I struggle to think of any, that over a 'global' weekend in Europe, a GP in the US, AND SCG (which we know plays by a slightly different meta) all had the same trending pattern.

Phoenix's numbers shouldn't be that high, because it's not THAT good. It's not 20% good, it's 10% good. Dredge and other similar strategies keep its natural predators down, and I'm talking from much experience.

This was from a different thread, and it really needs to be understood because its 100% accurate. I've said since Phoenix became a thing, that it can be suppressed by 'fair' decks, specifically things like Rock/BGx, the issue is those decks lose to the rest of Modern! I mean I dont follow the Rock discussion, but does it beat Storm, Tron? Hollow Bois? Dredge? Terminus? Heck if I know.

The Rock was the only undefeated deck going into the top 8, I believe, at SCG Philly a few days ago. It would have taken the whole event down if not for a misplay against Phoenix in the finals. Yes, it can beat all those decks in the hands of a skilled pilot as Orr clearly demonstrated (pretty sure he even beat Amulet 2-0), so saying it loses to 'the rest of Modern' is simply not true.

It's certainly beatable on paper, but it's also extremely consistent, as was clearly demonstrated yesterday when the Rock player (whose 75 was very geared towards defeating it) couldn't do a thing despite his t1 Spellbomb. There just aren't many decks out there right now that can jam two game plans at the same time so consistently. You focus on the wall, you get hit for 6 in the air every turn and burned out. You focus on the graveyard, all your creatures get bounced and you get hit for 7 and burned out.

It can be beaten, but just try beating it.
