Jeez. Sad to see the site go. Was always super fun to touch base on here before and after events. I’m sure we’ll find a new home...
orrrr the demise of salvation will coincide with the demise of bogles. Not a single usable aura? Really? Unless there’s something in the final 50 cards, we’re goinf to get completely skunked. I’m starting to think this whole set was a bad idea. There seems to be droves of superpowered cards. Top tier decks adding 2-3 considerable upgrades. I’m all about change but this might be too much at once.
I think there are more bombs hidden in the first spoilers than you realize. Infect got a major card today. I guess with that many cards still to come we have a chance. I’m hoping we get some random common at the end of the spoiler session that helps. I don’t think wizards has much incentive to help boggles out.
Hexproof is in mondo trouble. There have been considerable massive upgrades to almost every other deck. This might be the end of sleeving up boggles for a gp and having any realistic chance of winning. Don't mean to be a doomsdayer but I think it's pretty bad. I've been a boggler from day 1 (Have it foiled and signed except for Spiritdancers) and I just don't see how it competes after some of these cards are being spoiled.
I figure Enlightened Tutor also won't be reprinted because it's another way to find Ensnaring Bridge. I feel that Wizards is going to be careful with that card, especially with a deck that runs 4 of those, 4 Whir of Invention, 4 Welding Jar, AND 4 SB Spellskite actually doing pretty well right now.
That's the thing when you start to think about helpful cards. I feel like alot of potential cards would make hexproof strong but something else stronger. Any card similar to tutor would make it that much easier for another deck to find EE, chalice, spellskite, bridge... yikes.
I honestly would be content if the London mulligan rule works out and nothing got printed in MH. It's not even that it makes the deck that much better. It's just going to get rid of all those games where the deck doesn't even function. I'm totally fine with losing as long as I get to actually play.
I think Enlightened Tutor would completely change the deck. I don't think it can even be compared to Armory. Any opening hand that has two lands and a tutor is: turn 2 stony or turn 2 RIP or turn 2 Cage or turn 2 spellskite.. The sideboard could be completely thinned out because any tutor in the opening hand would just be extra copies of hate cards. Not to mention the ability to play one aura on turn two and hold up tutor to fetch for coronet the following turn or spiritlink or boon or whatever you needed. I think it's not always the amount of auras. It's the quality of auras. And this helps that big time. You could even push it to the extreme of playing a 1 of Ornithopter so you had a creature to fetch up in a bind.. or a 1 of oppressive rays. Yes, those two are probably extremes, haha.. but who knows. I think the card is super powerful and probably won't be reprinted for that reason. I am definitely open to the fact that I could be totally wrong here but I just don't see how it misses.
I was talking about Argothian Enchantress. That was NOT my suggestion of a helpful reprint. I have just heard that card mentioned all over the place as potential for Modern Horizons. The draw and protection is nice but it seems really situational. I sense some frustrating games with a lone unenchantable enchantress staring back up at you from the battlefield :).
**And Joban8 - I completely agree about your thoughts on Tutor. Other decks would abuse that thing to no end. It would be on the banned list in a week.
The deck is what it is. They should add that in the primer and it should be written in the flavor text of the hexproof creatures. If it was consistent or any better it would be unstoppable. I think trying to make hexproof something it isn't is the biggest mistake people make when they play it. I'm all about a spicey one of or a suite of auras that isn't completely stock but if you mess with it too much you're just going to lose. It is definitely a fairly simple deck. It does reward tight play and good decisions just as much as any other deck though. I would focus all of your time into learning matchups and play lines rather then trying to change the deck. I think things like knowing your sideboard plan, when you can safely rely on Arbor, how aggressively to mulligan, when to be patient with Spiritdancer is when you can really start to increase your win percentage. And as with any deck, you're going to have those games/tournaments when you just f'in lose :).
How's everyone feeling about the new set? I hope we get some help. Not because I think we need it but because I think after these cards come out, if you didn't get better, you got worse! I would love to see Enlightneded Tutor. People seem to think Enchantress has a good chance of getting printed. Not an ideal card but we might be able to use it somewhere.
Yeah, for sure. It definitely is the nature of the deck. I just haven't had the spiritdancer be so bad for such a long period of time. I'm sure a lot of it is luck. I personally haven't stuck that thing in months without it being immediately incinerated. And it doesn't kill on turn 3. It attacks on turn 3. You need a decent curve of auras to kill with it on 4.. and that's uninterrupted. I'm not doubting its place in the deck I just think there are definitely metas where a split with Ledgewalker might be an option. I also bring in a ton of sb cards against most of the non interactive decks. It probably loses more value there than it would normally. One thing is for sure, the days of playing that card and the opponent not being familiar with it or not recognizing its power are long gone!
Yikes. Got hammered at regionals.. and I don't mean drunk. My problem was Spiritdancer. She's starting to feel like a bit of a win more card. Two or three years ago I feel like there was a decent chance that removal spells were boarded out and Spiritdancers was amazing.. now the absolute best I can hope for is to draw a card off the aura cast trigger and control another creature to attach the aura to. I like ledgewalker alot but as tournaments progress and the lesser decks/players are weeded out, it's too slow. The deck obviously mulligans alot and being forced to keep a one creature hand with Spiritdancer is not good enough. One bolt, path, push, decay, trophy and it's over. Good thing those cards aren't popular or anything, ha. It's like bogles entire strategy is to blank the opponenets cards and I'm letting them off the hook by playing something to sink their cards/mana into. I've tested Ledgewalker for 50-60 matches or so but I'm going to revist it and see how it does. Maybe a 3/1 split with Spiritdancer. I'm fine with being a bit slow and losing.. I'm getting reeeeally sick of getting blown out with Spiritdancer draws.
What's up guys? Work has finally slowed a bit so I've been testing some online. I put together a list with 7-8 draw card auras and have been rolling. It's pretty interesting. I'd love for someone else to give it a go. I originally had the idea through frustrations playing against Tron. Not being able to get my bogle big enough before it was inevitably swept off the table. Realizing I had 3 turns to do literally whatever I wanted. I started suiting up the Bogles with the draw auras (Keen and Sixth Sense) and drawing massive amounts of cards... usually finding Stony or Teeg with an umbra with ease. I've been playing with it ever since. It just buries most decks in card advantage. I've been surprised. Even most of the creature based decks it seems to eventually overpower. I usually just draw into creatures at the very least, drop them down as chump blockers, and the race swings in my favor. Some of the real bad matchups I board a portion of them out but most of those have obvious things to bring in anyway. Maybe its been the luckiest 30 matches of my life, but I've been winning very consistently.
Curiosity type of auras are interesting. My only concern is that they do nth to boost the size of the bogles. And in many matchup, size is really important as it determines whether we can attack past their blockers. We already have a lot of draw power out of spiritdancer.
Btw, are you testing in mtgo leagues?
Yeah, friendly leagues. I'm definitely not saying it's the best iteration of the deck by any means. There's plenty of room for concern :). I was just dicking around trying things and it has worked really well for me so far. Of the matches I have played, I have certainly lost a few and top decking a keen sense can be pretty bad. I've just been surprised at how well it preforms. In the past I have subbed Keen sense in and out frequently but have never taken it to the extreme of playing 3-4 sixth sense as well. I've been testing it in a deck with a 2-2 cut between spiritdancers and ledgewalkers and a full set of Gryff's Boon. I have just pounded tron and control in multiple games that I had no business winning. The other upside is mulligans. With as much as the deck mulls, the draw auras can really smooth things out and catch up fast with some of the mulls to 5,4,3. Like I said.. just anxious for someone else to try it out and see if they have any luck.

I need some help fellow Boglers!!! I am 8 cards away from foiling and signing the entirety of my deck. It is an absolutely masterpiece. The cards I am looking for a 4 x Spiritdancers and 4 Scouts (signed and foiled, obviously). I will pay pretty much anything if anyone has them and is willing to part with them. I realize there is a trading post on the site but I knew my only chance was throwing something up in here. PLEASE send me a message if you have any leads. I'll post a pic of the deck for you guys as soon as I'm done.
FoodChainsGoblins - That is a rough tourney report. I am always amazed at how much the judge rulings usual favor the player that screwed up. Like, isn't knowing and following the rules part of the game?? I understand that mistakes are made. I have made a ton of them. But even on my own mistakes I feel the responsibility to punish myself much harder than the judge ever does. Anyway, just keep your head up and keep playing the way you do. At the end of the day your playing with little pieces of cardboard and going home with your ethics and morals in tact is far more important.
I actually do have a foil Kor Spiritdancer. It kind of bugs me because the rest of my Bogles deck is completely non foiled. I prefer it that way for Bogles because I want my opponents to think of it as a Troll or Meme deck and underestimate me. I would definitely be willing to part with it for a regular non foil and some cash.
Regarding the plays, I feel you. Everyone makes mistakes. I had 2 friends lose in the top 4 of PPTQs recently because of them when they were NOT able to "take it back." The finals for each of them would have been a super good matchup, but the Judge's call is always correct, especially at smaller events where there is no Head Judge. I do realize that I am not a competitive player by nature now. I think I have resigned myself to more of the collecting nature of Magic. I don't feel a need to cheat to win in Magic, but there is something VERY inherently wrong with my feelings there. I find myself wanting to try to do those plays, but have stopped myself so far. This is when I realize that it's hard to change play patterns and play styles. I will never be even a merely average Magic player. It's sad because I've played for too long to be this terrible. In the past, 2 misplays like that would have resulted in TWO game Warnings, which equal a Game Loss. It's not a big deal since he could have just tried to cheat me in the 3rd game as well and it seemed karma was definitely on his side on the drawing portion as well (which admittedly Bogles rarely draws better cards from the top of its library than its opponents).
*I could have literally won a match at the recent FNM with Affinity vs. Enchantress by activating my Inkmoth Nexus, paying for double Ghostly Prison, and swinging while sacrificing creatures with Arcbound Ravager, but I was 1 mana short. I even considered it, but figured it didn't matter since his only out on an empty hand was drawing Sphere of Safety. His 2 previous draws were second White Source and 5th total mana and Leyline of Sanctity, which prevented a Ghirapur Aether Grid kill. I figured, why cheat when I probably win next turn anyway? Well, I learned why those players do better than me...
Thanks for getting back to me. I am looking for a foil AND signed Spiritdancer. I've got the foil copies. Thanks though!
Luckily Bogles is a fairly straight forward deck so I have only come into a handful of rule descrepancies. I don't get the chance to play a ton so I go into alot of tournaments pretty rusty. That's when I worry most about decks like Storm playiong super fast and me totally missing something. I showed up once to the table with 59 cards by mistake. I mailed a Temple Garden away to get signed and forgot to put it back! I immidietly called a judge and he gave me a game loss. I know that's probably what the book says but I would have given myself a match loss. I absolutly hammered him in games 2 and 3 and felt awful about it. I felt the same way about the witchbane orb PT game. I think that kid should have been given a match loss. Showing up, being prepared, and knowing your deck is part if it. Anyways..

It will be interesting to see what happens. I'm not sure the unbanning will be good for any deck not named control or jund. The meta is perfect for hexproof right now. We can beat creatures and we can beat decks trying to kill creatures. Sideboard games against control weren't the greatest matchup in the world even without Jace. Counters keep the bogle fairly neutered and the brainstorming every turn will make digging to Supreme Verdict, EE, and Alliance pretty easy. I'm skeptical this is going to help us. I'm not making any predictions but I don't think it could get much better for Bogles than it is right now. We'll see!!
Wow. That was tight. Such a good final. Congrats. Wasn't sure he was going to get there. Seemed like a potentially dangerous keep game 3! Here comes all the hate! Thanks a lot Dan! Haha.
