  • posted a message on P1P1 Royal Assasin vs. Doom Blade
I'd take Royal Assassin on the card advantage and game stability basis.

The Assassin can equate to a multiple for one card. Depending of if you can actually use him at one point or another. He is great for dropping removals from your opponent opening up space for you to drop a win condition and your opponent not drawing to another one. At worst, he is a 1 for 1 where he helps you get rid of a card for an opponent.

Doom Blade will always be a one for one. It is spot removal and is very hard to get around, but at that will always be a one for one.

Also, Assassin helps to establish a game state more in your favor. Already having cards in hands and a plan, if the Assassin hits the field you've immediately disrupted the game plan and forced him to change. A lot of times, at a limited table...that's enough to cause your opponent to make mistakes.

I like to share my sealed pools and analyze others, so here's mine from tonight.

I went RGb. R and G with solid creatures/fixing and a small bit removal. Black was SOLID for removal to supplement.

And that's what I tried to do. Once I cut though, I needed to fill on a third color so I splashed a bit of black with the amount of removal it had. Lost 0-2 round one to Grave Titan + Ajani game 1 with 2 Doom Blades in hand :-(, and having to mull down to 4 never drawing more than 1 land pre-draw game 2. I hear a lot of people complain about mana screw on MTGO but this was the first time I had it. Not going to complain, that guy's deck built itself.

Can mock my mana structuring but I've never had an issue in limited. I have a +1 superstition as well. So I usually build limited on 16 lands with 41 cards. I've been drafting all week waiting for weekend time to do sealed and this was the first time I had mana issue in a game. So I'm just chopping that up to bad luck.

Edited the titan, it was a Grave Titan not Primeval.

So I'm just starting back since quitting at the end of the Ravnica block. There's a GP Trial for Sydney here in Melbourne soon and the format is M11 block. I love limited so I figured I may go give it a round.

To prepare I am trying to do some sealeds on MOGO. Just got into my first one and my pool was...overwhelming? I guess I got kind of stumped on which way to build. I'm not looking for criticism more than support in figuring out how I SHOULD have built this pool

I'll post a picture of the pool and in a few posts (pending responses) I'll post my build.

Back from the dead...maybe. I haven't played Magic since 2006...just after Time Spiral came out, because I didn't like where the game was headed; and I had started playing during the Urza block originally.

I used to live in Charlotte, NC but over the time off I've moved to Australia to be with my wife (she is Australian) and now working Full-Time/Management with EB Games. I'm hoping to start back with my first event back being the Worldwake Pre-Release in Melbourne here and hopefully it's as good as the old ones I used to go to.

If there is a solid Melbourne showing here on the forums I'd love to hear about the good places to go to find some playtesting partners or play groups.

    See everyone around (again).

  • posted a message on Reprint the Power Rares?
I don't have time to read through the entire thread right now, but I voted No while only owning 1 piece of power myself (UL Time Walk).

I've discussed this many times with the friends I play T1 with...and it's just in the game's best interest NOT to reprint the power cards. Right now, in order to be able to play a T1 No Proxy tourney, you have to invest a lot of money in a 15-20 set of cards. This takes time and money but also lowers to field to the players that are devoted to the game and format.

A reprint of the "Power" cards, which in my book not only encompass the Power 9 and Library of Alexandria, but in so much as Dark Ritual, Brainstorm, Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor and so many more that are considered staples.

Reprints of any of the staple cards would severly cut the value of these originals and take an investment right out from under the players who spent the money for Foreign Foils and the Beta/Alphas of the Power cards, so on and so forth. It's not so much as them losing money, but they invested money in these cards and would just be happy enough if they retain value.

I do understand that the power cards are considered a "possible" way to make money, but I just don't think it's that way. I believe it to be a way for devoted players to invest in something they love, and I think Wizards will do their best to support that devotion by NOT doing something that would ruin a good investment also costing them a lot of players.

When I first saw Enduring Renewal was coming back, the Johnny in me was overjoyed. However, every combo with it requires 3 pieces, which in my experience is twice as risky to run as a two-piece combo. Realistically, I want any combo deck I run to be able to survive or even thrive without all of the combo pieces.

Also, my build is meant to be budget, as a personal challenge to make a cheap Pandemonium deck. Smile

All good. I don't think Renewal's are that expensive right now (haven't looked). I would recommend Greater Gargadon still though. He gives you a decent sac outlet to burn and dying creatures. And with Pandamonium...he's rather deadly. Also for a rare...he costs next to nothing.

I'm working on a version of RW Pandmonium that also run the Renewal Combo with Wild Cantor. I have Greater Gargadon for beef and temptation in conjunction with Flagstones of Trokair for land search and counter removal. With Pandamonium, when he comes out, he takes out their big buy OR can hit them for 9 and attack for 9 doing 18 in one turn if they don't have a creature out.

The deck also runs 2 "arbitrarily large number" combos with:

    1) Enduring Renewal + Wild Cantor + Grapeshot = Finite Storm combo with Grapeshot
    2) Enduring Renewal + Pandamonium + Wild Cantor = Finite Pandamonium Damage from Cantor recover

I think you could possibly splash W in this deck for Renewal and run Cantors and make it a little more efficient. With the RG version, the creatures want to be aggro, but Pandamonium won't come out til turn 4, and only if you manage to have it in hand. Just a few ideas. If you want to see my RW build LMK.

That just leads me to ask...what happens with the card? Does it remain removed from the game until the end of that game? If Tefari leaves play, can he play it during the first upkeep he has that Tefari is no longer in play? Seems like Tefari alters the gamestate A LOT more than I thought...

This happened in the recent Gold Tier Tourney at my shop.

My opponent had a Durkwood Baloth suspended. I played Tefari, Mage of Zhalfir during my turn while there was 1 counter left on the Baloth. When it comes to my opponents upkeep, what happens? I know the counter is removed, but is the card then permanently removed from the game because due to the Tefari's static ability, my opponent could not legally play the Baloth?

Just wondering because that's what I was told and ended up drawing the match which I would have won, because I'd have countered the Baloth with a Draining Whelk in hand and beat him in 2 turns.

I want to keep red for the Monkey and Lavamancer. Yawgmoth's Will would be good if I dropped Lavamancer, but he's one of my solid win conditions right now. I have also been thinking of droppping down the number of Moxes to just Jet, Ruby and Diamond. I know everyone says...more LD, more LD...but in T1, no decks seriously run THAT many lands. And a lot of them run fetch lands that don't really count because I can't pin them. So the 4th Wasteland has not been optimal. I'm going to work with it a bit and repost and see what you guys think later.

I'd cut the Molten Rains and Rain of Tears, giving you room for 4 Duress (Cabal Therapy could also work), 1 Yawgmoth's Bargain, 1 Necropotence, 1 Yawgmoth's Will, and either Tendrils of Agony or Vampiric Tutor. I don't know how to feel about Mox Diamond... I'd consider cutting it for another Wasteland, but it comes down to personal preference I guess! Nice deck though, good luck with it!! Grin

I'll consider cutting Molten Rain as the RR has been harder to get than BB. I want the LD spells in simply because of deck purpose. I'll try dropping the Rains for Duress and drop the Demonic Tutor for Tendrils. Seems like enough of a change to possibly make a difference.

This is an achetype that I've play in almost every format. I've had a little bit of success with it against Fish, Sullivan Solution and an older version of Grim Long.

It's essentially BR LD. With the monkey for artifact destruction and Bob for card draw. Bob beats is essentially the win condition right now, but I've also got Grim Lavamancer in there for additional damage. Anyways...here's the list right now:

I don't know about the Tutor...may make it one random Tendrils of Agony or something of the sort. I'm just looking for ideas, and ways to possibly add more card draw. Maybe Necropotence or [card]Yawgmoth's Bargain[card]. Ideas?

It's ok so long as you aren't running cards that manipulate your SB (ie Cunning Wish, Burning Wish, Research // Development). With the addition of those cards to your deck/hand, they would appear as "marked" and could warrant action from the judges.
