Would it make sense to use Llanowar Elves instead of Servant of the Conduit? Would the potentially faster start be worth it over having access to more energy and all mana colours?

what about Song of Freyalis. Too slow for the deck?

    1. Yes. This deck's 2CC slot is clogged, and moving your ramp to the 1CC slot is great. If you play ramp, that is. The jury still seems to be out on whether Servant was really necessary for this deck. But yeah, I'll happily give up the energy counters and color fixing for a decrease in mana cost. We now get to play sneks, Siphoners etc. on turn 2 with mana up for Blossoming Defense, or we get to slam a Hadana's Climb or Rishkar on turn 2.

    2. Too slow for this deck.

Overall, I'm not too happy with the (lack of) support we're getting with this set, but we'll have to see. We may just as well get an advantage from other decks rising to prominence that we have a strong matchup against.

Song of Freyalise does nothing for this deck.

Adventurous Impulse might be worth looking into. We always want to get our snek + cub/siphoner/balista ASAP, and this helps while letting us lower the land count.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to say we got shafted pretty hard here. None of the cards suggested above are actually competitive.

At this point, I'm gonna have to go with Llanowar Elves as the one card I could see go in. It allows us to protect our many important turn 2 creatures with Blossoming Defense right out of the gate, and in general it lets us ramp to Hydra / Gearhulk whatever without clogging up the turn 2 slot even more with Servant of the Conduit. But honestly, I'm not sure we're getting a boost.

    How is that reanimator?

Also, run Never // Return over Ruinous Path. A neat trick with aftermath cards in Summonings is that they help you early game, then they lie around in your graveyard and wait to become huge tokens once Summonings is out.

Basically, with Summonings out, Never // Return reads "Destroy a creature or planeswalker, AND create a 2/2 Zombie token, AND a 3/3 Construct token, AND a 4/4 Construct token, AND exile a card from their graveyard". All in one card.

I'm testing Contraband Kingpin in the side against R aggro. It completely stops all their turn 1-2 creatures until they can devote a Shock or an Incendiary Flow on top of combat damage, and even then, it gives you 1 life, prevents an attack, might even kill the attacker, and draws away a burn spell.

Looks fun. But the problem is that a lot of the cards are not even very good if their revolt is triggered, and terrible if it isn't. For example, a 6/6 trample for 5 mana is not a very big deal, and a 4/4 trample for 5 mana is downright bad. As far as I can see, Kari Zev is your only consistent way to get these cards from bad to decent, so if you don't draw her or she eats removal, it's over. On top of that, you only have 9 red mana sources, so you need to always draw one of these in the first 8 and Kari Zev for the deck to start working. Upside isn't worth it, IMO.

The question is - what really defines Dominaria? We'll see a bunch of recognizable place names, but from a game mechanic perspective, what can they do to make this feel like old-school Dominaria and not a NWO layer laid on top of familiar names?

Expensive, yes, but as opposed to the others, this one actually helps you get to a permanent card that you can cast for free.

Just note that a card like Bishop doesn't double its effect with Panharmonicon, since it triggers on cast, not ETB.

Thinking about that picture of the Gatewatch in the arena. Seriously, who exactly are they supposed to go up against? "And now, to do battle against the five individuals who handed the Eldrazis' collective asses to them just two weeks ago ... a Thriving Turtle!"

This is not unplayable in Standard. It's a great supplement to your 2 and 3cc counterspells, as a 1- or 2-of for the late game.
