@techmarine I highly recommand celestial purge. I even play three copies in sideboard, since they are great against most meta planeswalker, another early removal against burn creature/dredge creature and working well against blood moons.

And they hit every non-land permanent in Jund/Junk other than Goyf and Scooze. It's a must-include if your meta is heavy on midrange.

From extensive experience with Big Zoo (Noble Hierarch powering out Knight) I can say for certain that you always keep Kessig Wolf Run in. It will earn you wins all over the place. Unexpected wins obviously, but also just breaking board stalemates. Whether by the buff or the trample, Wolf Run will always be relevant. The current Bant shells play more mana dorks than my Zoo deck did, making Wolf Run even better.

    EDIT:
If you're expecting a meta where Retreat will be sub-optimal, maybe it should go in the sideboard? What matchups would you bring it in for?

I don't care what they ban. As long as they ban something. The deck will warp the format to the point of Affinity in Standard: either you play the best deck, or build a deck strictly to beat the best deck. The appeal of Modern is the diversity of the format. This Eldrazi deck destroys that.

Double mana black just for an out vs Bogles seems like a bad idea.

If you want to use a planeswalker to beat control, you're better off using a you-gain-advantage planeswalker (like Ajani, Mentor of Heroes) rather than a opponent-loses-advantage planeswalker (Liliana of the Veil). Compare the value of the card you draw off Ajani vs the card that the opponent discards to Liliana. Our cards have so much value, that it is immensely rare for a control or combo deck to lose more value to Liliana than we gain from Ajani.

posted a message on [Primer] Zoo [Video Primer]
Just got home from Grand Prix Boston-Worcester. Failed out of the main event hard with a techy Creature Gifts deck. Decided to go with the old standby Zoo for the side events. Went 5-2 and 7-2-1, which are probably my best finishes ever at a major event. Here's a decklist, card choice explanations, and report:

(I don't recall the EXACT lands played off the top of my head)

    * Goblin Guide: Super fast. Can't put a price on that kind of speed
    * Kird Ape: needed a couple extra 1 drops to maximize Ghor-Clan
    * Qasali Pridemage, Scavenging Ooze: utility and functionality. Great bang for your 4-slots buck
    * Flinthoof Boar: needed another 2 drop that could dodge Electrolyze etc and interact favorably vs Snapcaster Mage
    * Loxodon Smiter: I swear by this guy in Modern Zoo. No graveyard vulnerability like Knight of the Reliquary. No vulnerability to Lightning Bolt/Helix like KotR. Punches through so many counterspells. This is definitely a love affair.
    * Ghor-Clan Rampager: Whoever developed this innovation is a genius. Beats Bolt, chump blockers, Finks, and blockers with big toughness; all major stumbling blocks for us.
    * Boros Charm: the utility and flexibility is excellent and it is very very rarely dead in hand.
    * 19 Lands with at least 10 fetches may seem slim, but I got flooded more often than I got screwed. If I got stuck on two lands, but those lands had all 3 colors, I often won.
    * Dragon's Claw: Burn won a PTQ locally and was expected to be out in force.

Modern Mayhem R1, vs Rich with Standard Mono Green Nykthos:
G1 (he mulligans once): I beat, he ramps. He starts to stabilize. I get the dream-come-true with Bloodrush + Double Strike for the win.
G2 (I mull 1): I think he landed at least 3 monsters in a row. I was forced to 2-for-1 myself for each of them. Probably would have won if I had just pointed all that burn at his dome. After all, he won while at 1 life. I'm pretty sure I tilted this one away.
G3: Aggro start, burn finish. W.
    Matches: 1-0
    Games: 2-1

Modern Mayhem R2, vs Philip with RUG Twin:
G1: Beat face for fun and profit.
G2 (I mull THREE): He didn't have enough blue sources for Cryptic to save his life nor Pestermites/Deceiver Exarchs to go with the Splinter Twins chillin in his hand.
A pattern starts to develop here. Twin is a great matchup for this deck.
    Matches: 2-0
    Games: 4-1

Modern Mayhem R3, vs Michael with Scapeshift:
    G1 (I mull 1): The usual
G2: Same. He got land screwed.
I suspect this is a fairly good matchup too.
    Matches: 3-0
    Games: 6-1

Modern Mayhem R4, vs Kris with Affinity:
G1 (I mull 1): Double Pridemage draw plus big beatsticks gets there
G2 (he mulls 1): Stony Silence + 12 removal spells = easy win
Both games exemplify why this is a good matchup for us. I do still fear Etched Champion, but didn't see it against me all day.
    Matches: 4-0
    Games: 8-1

Modern Mayhem R5, vs Roy with Junk (minimal White):
G1: Lose to his Scavenging Ooze and my land flood.
G2 (he mulls 1): Incremental beats accelerates into big finish for the win.
G3: He uses Inquisition of Kozilek turn 1 and sees my Loxodon Smiter. He fails to remember that and kindly +1's his turn 3 Liliana of the Veil. Misplays of that magnitude suck, but at 10:30 at night on Saturday after a frenetic Friday, these things are expected.
He never drew Lingering Souls, which was pretty lucky on my part.
    Matches: 5-0
    Games: 10-2

Modern Mayhem R6, the Edgar Flores with UW Control:
G1: Went aggro when I should have committed to the grind. Loss.
G2: Kicked Vines twice in the early game leads to a quick and ruthless win.
G3: I got stuck on 2 basics for way too long. I lost as a direct consequence. If I had decent colors earlier, I would have won with ease. One of my few land screws of the day.
    Matches: 5-1
    Games: 11-4

Modern Mayhem R7, Jacob with Kiki Pod:
G1: Beat face. Probably bolted an early mana dork and bloodrushed over blockers.
G2 (I mull 1): I draw my hate, but lose to his beatdown via high quality critters.
G3: I draw my hate, but lose to his beatdown via high quality critters. Sound familiar? Turns out it is a pattern forming.
    Matches: 5-2
    Games: 12-6

Jacob made the cut to top 4. Good for him. Made me feel a little bit better about losing a creature conflict. Got something like 9 to 12 packs of M15 for my work. Being successful and playing well felt great, but the event started late, went slow, and the Swiss ended at about 1AM, so nobody was a happy camper by the end (the judges least of all).

Sunday Super Series R1, vs Andrew with UR Twin:
G1 (I mull 2): Om nom nom delicious twin decks in my tummy.
G2 (I mull THREE. AGAIN.): He floods out giving me time to chip away at his life total.
    Matches: 1-0
    Games: 2-0

SSS R2, vs Alex with UR:
G1: A little tight on mana sources, but not too bad until his Spreading Seas severely hinders my development and I draw no more lands.
G2 (I mull 1): Same as above, but with more land screw and DOUBLE Spreading Seas.
    Matches: 1-1
    Game: 2-2

SSS R3, vs Rodney with Scapeshift:
G1 (I mull 1): I lost to some subtle misplay that slowed me down a little. I don't remember the details.
G2: Whittle him down. Accelerate pressure near the end. Win.
G3: See game 2, with a faster end.
    Matches: 2-1
    Games: 4-3

SSS R4, vs Liam with UR Twin:
G1: Mediocre start, big finish. Get in my belleh!
G2: Don't have enough early speed and I pay for it later. Lose with him at 1 life.
G3: Same accelerating damage with a big finish. Win.
    Matches: 3-1
    Games: 6-4

SSS R5, vs Neal with Melira Pod:
G1 (he mulls 1): The usual win.
G2: The usual Pod loss: I draw hate, he beats me down.
    G3: see G2
    Matches: 3-2
    Games: 7-6

    SSS R6, vs Andrew:
    No show. Thanks bro.
    Matches: 4-2
    Games: 9-6

SSS R7, vs Adam with competitive level Burn:
G1: I race burn and win. Never thought you'd hear that outside of combo decks huh? Feels good man.
G2: Scavenging Ooze and Dragons Claw make for a sad burn player. Literally. He had a frown to make Sam the Eagle proud
Beating Burn without hitting a single Lightning Helix was surprising and amusing.
    Matches: 5-2
    Games: 11-6

SSS R8, vs Stafford with GW Hatebears:
G1 (I mull 1): I lose to wretch draws with him at 4 life.
    G2: Accelerate into win.
G3: Draw. I think a subtle misplay in the midgame and another in the mid-to-late game cost me the win.
    Matches: 5-2-1
    Games: 12-7-1

SSS R9, vs Robert with UR Twin:
G1: Closer that I would have liked, but he tapped out to dig for land so I burned him out.
G2 (I mull 1): Young Pyromancer was a house, making blockers all day long. I avoided killing it to ensure I had removal in hand in case he tried to go off. I didn't kill it as soon as I drew the second removal, and that almost cost me the game. Luckily, topdecked Ghor-Clan pulled me through.
    Matches: 6-2-1
    Games: 14-7-1

SSS R10, vs Matthew with RG Tron:
G1: Natural Tron online on turn 3 or 4 is pretty good. I had the Path for his Wurmcoil Engine, but he still had time to Emrakul after that.
G2 (I mull 1): Win on ridiculous blazing speed. Gotta go fast (golden ring ding sound).
G3 (I mull 2): He never hits full Tron. I'm slow enough for him to play Wurmcoil, but I'm holding 3 Paths.
    Matches: 7-2-1
    Games: 16-8-1

Won half a box. Had a great time. Finally headed home at 11 PM.

    Props:
    * MTGSalvation user BatHickey (http://www.mtgsalvation.com/members/132693-bathickey) for rekindling the 10+ years old bromance
    * Goblin Guide for clocking people like a champ.
    * Scavenging Ooze and Qasali Pridemage for savage utility.
    * Ghor-Clan Rampager for trample and +4 damage all day

    Slops:
    * TJ's for another event with iffy organization.
    * Celestial Purge for being dead (is going to be come Mirran Crusader for sure)
    * Pod decks, for beating me at the creature game, even without Pod or Chord. Hopefully Crusader helps.

    Final notes:
    * The land mix is very much in flux. I think one of each basic is correct. The Forest and Plains are obvious for Blood Moon. Mountain is just there to get from Path or if you're trying to avoid shocking yourself when fetching. However, I'm not very firm on this one and may be wrong. 5 shocks felt good. I don't think I'd play more than 6 in this deck.
    * I didn't play against BGx decks much, despite them making a big showing in the main event (including taking first and second). I don't think it will be a great matchup (despite some Twin player proclaiming otherwise to me), due to their high removal density and the relative ineffectiveness of our removal against their dudes. Those Mirran Crusaders are definitely going to be relevant.
    * I didn't play against UWR, despite expecting it to be everywhere (New England = blue decks out the wazoo). I believe that matchup has improved greatly due to Ghor-Clan saving out early beaters and my discovery of Vines of Vastwood for the board.
    * If Burn doesn't show up in force in the future, I believe those two Dragon's Claws will become the 4th Vines and 3rd Mirran Crusader, as the last two bullets are matchups I'm concerned about.
    * Just a reminder, make sure you use Vines of Vastwood to screw over Twin's attempts to target their guys with Splinter Twin or Kiki or prevent your opponents from equipping their dudes (unfortunately doesn't stop Batterskull's token equip). Although rare, these plays are endlessly amusing. The expressions on people's faces are just priceless.
    * Despite the bad Pod matchup, I am optimistic. There was no Pod in the Top 8, which is probably enough to start a downward trend in the amount of Pod played, at least locally. Between Mirran Crusader, a very relevant sideboard, and said probable lower Pod population, I'm feeling fairly unstoppable.
    * I didn't go into sideboarding, which may be worth discussing. Some of the choices are odd, others debatable. If people want to talk about it, just say so.
    * I wish I realized there was a list/bullet function. These stars look kinda dumb. But I'm not gonna go back and replace them all now.

I hope you guys enjoyed this foray into the life of a mediocre player enjoying Zoo. Any questions or comments can be directed to my publicist, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or just posted in this thread.

In an aggressive deck, is taking up maindeck space with reactive cards really a viable plan?
