hey, i just wanted to run something stupid in standard

and when hooting mandrills was spoiled people wanted to compare it to tarmogoyf in modern....that quickly fizzled out

but i played a mono-green stompy deck in m14 built around the kalonian tusker which was a vanilla 3/3 or GG and half a playset of witchstalker

want somesort of half ass-zoo deck
    do you guys ave anything?

You obviously have gone salty Horrible, Infect is no longer the deck for you.

    so cast it aside.

I for one, am going to continue to push this deck to it's limits.

i have seen your 75, you're not there yet. Nor are you qualified to make such a statement yet.

infect was nice when RTR-New phx ran modern. it won me a bunch of store credit, but the environment was right.
some people get attached to decks, i don't i just play what is right for the environment. keep in mind infect isn't a deck to sleeve up for a pro-tour or a GP. just FNM's

with that store credit standard popped up with the boss sligh lists before m15 came out, i was fortunate enough to start off with a 75 sleeved that was just a TAD bit better than the list you have.

keep in mind infect is like boss sligh or rabble red, there is a short window in time where the metagame hasn't fully developed or forgot about aggressive decks that slip through the cracks, but once the meta adjusts it significantly lowers the disadvantage that those cheap decks had thrived on/exploited.

you're also attempting to combat a deck that thrives on spell and mana efficiency (delver, affinity) with spell inefficiency in your 75, thinking it sets you ahead at all. infect was a great deck when it was cheap creatures that only had to get you to 10. with effective alternative cost spells. setting up all this other stuff tends to set you back and makes you susceptible to further setbacks (i mentioned spell snare your slyvan scrying).

tormod's crypt is a dead card, and spending a whole card on attempting to twart treasure cruise isn't helping your board state, it's merely giving delver more time) creeping corrosion is too expensive you'll be dead unless you're playing agaisnt a jank brew with no mox opal..

Find it interesting that this deck is still around, but i am glad alot less people are still playing it.

so basically, the delver decks and with khans coming out have really done this deck in.
swiftspear, treasure cruise and a few other cards were exactly what delver needed.

as someone who had played infect for 6+ months this year prior to khans, i reccomend agaisnt adopting the deck in this fast and powerful meta....infect has no interaction other than apsotle's blessing, or vines of vast wood which is reactive, everything in this deck is reactive which requires you to sand bag damage

people cite tom ross like there is no tomorrow, but he relies HEAVILY on ponder, daze, beserk, brainstorm, invigorate, and force of will in order to setup his combo kill. many of you also aren't running the noble hierarch the deck is built around. tom also takes no damage from his dual lands....

so before direct comparisons are made between the decks remember that 90% of your deck is significantly lower on the power spectrum than the tier 1 legacy deck.....

now that you fully understand that, you adopt a different play style.
this type of playstyle was great when infect just rotated out of standard and the reactive strategies worked well agaisnt the pro-active JUND lists floating around.....always going to bolt, or thoughtseize you or establishing a liliana-tarmo clock.

around the time affinity, splinter-twin and kiki-control started taking the meta infect became the list to start leaving behind...

now, with the delver and khans of tarkir affecting the meta heavily (there are twice as many fetchlands and some nice powerful cards for use to choke on) our slower reactive strategies that were setup to fight stuff like abrupt decay and lightning bolt no longer work.

i honestly believe it's time to cast these infect decks to the side....and become immense isn't the answer we need for an aggresive meta.

affinity is too quick of a clock to catch up to when they're on the play....
delver....is an uphill battle especially when we're mulling alot more than we have been thanks to dead cards in the 7 like mainboarded wild defiance, or become immense and stuff like slyvan scrying which are all just begging for us to be time walked with a simple spell snare, or mana leak

@overlord: Infect lists balance speed vs resiliency. Whenever you cut a creature and add a pump spell, you are increasing the decks speed, but lowering its resiliency.

Given that, we can ask, what are conventional bad matchups for infect? The answer is decks that prey on its relatively low resilency with cards like path/dismember/bolt i.e. jund/junk/twin.

This type of deck will improve your 'good' matchups while making your bad ones worse. I have a good win % vs UWR, in part because I avoid cards like distortion strike and assault strobe.

If you really want to run RUG, Id start by cutting those distortion strikes and a strobe, and add 3 ichorclaw myr, which has good synergy with ghor-clan. if you do that, you want to strongly consider cutting mutagenic growth for rancor, and adding 1-2 more protection effects or gitaxian probes.

Another option is to try and get clever and run slaughterhorn, with the plan of using regular damage plus assault strobe to kill with ordinary damage a reasonable fraction of the time.

How do you do regular damage if all your creatures are dealing infect damage? Are you referring to adding non infect creatures like BOP inside for a alternate beatdown plan?

He's talking about the melira pod decks, creatures lose infect, can't get counters placed on them and no poison counters added.

But your meta would have to be really really bad at playing magic to win with regular damage

If a pod player can't beat a few 1/1 vanilla creatures, some sub par pump spells and a 3 drop 3/2 with no other effects he is a very bad player and it's just pathetic

That's mostly just people throwing spare standard cards in decks or testing with it. Anger hasn't been doing too well.

Just because it comes up as 26% on mtg goldfish does not mean you should go 100 copies deep on speculation because it will bite ya in the ass
You must not really know anything about Modern.

My LGS has Modern 3 nights a week. 20+ people show up and play. Almost every Jund list, including most UR decks are playing 2-4 Anger of the Gods. Please know what you are talking about. It hoses nearly all creature decks.

lose the attitude, that card works for your metagame but the few decks that run it here (usually america control or bad storm players) it does'nt do much at 3 CMC sorcery speed

i've seen jund bring in 4 of them for infect and lose, thinking that was the optimal play (apostles blessing hosed it) so did running pump spells

    -4 bob
    +4 anger bad decision

    -----

also i don't know anyone who plays ensoul artifact in affinity, if they do i bet there is something sub-optimal about the deck you're not telling us about (just making your point sound better)

i bet you $50 that the dude running ensoul artifact is missing a high dollar play set or few cards

like he only owns 3 mox opals and 2 etched champion or something and decided to fill the list out with something cute

    ad "legacy 2.0":
Just because blue is dominant in legacy and isn't to the same degree in modern, doesn't invalidate every comparison of modern and legacy. I was referring to the format not being impacted by new cards any more (Theros+, I wasn't referring to RtR). It's true that courser sees play in a few decks, but most Jund decks don't run her.

Ensoul artifact DOES NOT see play in any strong modern deck, because it's an invitation for a 2-for-1, with you being on the receiving side of it.

Reclamation Sage is an improvement on the sliver in pod-decks, that's true, but it hasn't "impacted the format". Pod players just play him over the sliver in the sideboard, and that's it.

Ensoul Artifact actually was in the finals at GP Kobe a week ago. As for Theros, while I agree that it is underpowered, some cards from it do see play. Burn (which just won GP Kobe), runs Eidolon of the Great Revel. Merfolk runs Master of Waves and often Thassa. All-In Twin runs Swan Song. Deadguy Ale runs Brimaz. And Stormbreath Dragon sometimes sees play instead of Thundermaw. While that isn't a ton, the format has been changed somewhat (and I am sure that I am forgetting some cards).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Anger of the Gods see some play in sideboards, as well as Courser in some zoo builds? I'm not big on Modern personally, but I have seen them pop up.

Totally it was a long time coming, but I am so glad I didn't just up and quit magic, fought through it and patience paid off.

With the sheer amount of newer players wanting infect decks I think I can come out of this not losing a dime

oh cockatrice players picked up on the deck that explains why the more recent posts have been...not of uniform quality. well guys, KTK fetches, infect it's been nice knowing ya!

I've been finding more people enjoying Legacy more than Modern lately because people hate how the ban hammer comes down and wrecks decks. I myself instantly followed over to Legacy with the banning of Bloodbraid Elf in Jund deck, a very stupid banning. I came back with the release of Deathrite Shaman but they had to ban that too so back I went to Legacy. My friends and I have noticed they just ban anything that makes an interesting archetype in Modern these days. I'm still also annoyed Cloudpost is not legal.

As for Wizards not supporting Modern, I've been assuming it could crash and burn if not fetchlands are reprinting after this year, 2016 at the latest. Everyone is hoping for fetchlands to come out in KTK since Wizards are trying to make the block make you hurt for multicolour mana. This is what I believe is keeping Modern breathing at the moment. If they reveal the set has no fetchlands, I expect Modern to "flat-line".

I feel that wizards does nothing to keep legacy players playing.
Sure they have a banlist on their website, and they have a cash grab grand prix in the legacy format (but that is just because that region has a really strong legacy base they want MONEY)

but star cityy games picked up the slack, star city games is a business but they don't run it the greedy way hasbro/wotc runs it. better streaming, better anouncers, they are keeping legacy alive on their own and are doing a better job at coverage and running a tighter more effective tournament structure than WOTC/Hasbro can ever dream of.

the promotional tour for m15 looked like a goddamn joke, the bumbling on camera, the announcers questioning whats going on. you have that dude wearing cargo shorts and sandals with a suit jacket, shirt and tie on

it just seems like a bad SNL sketch making fun of high school geeks running a tournamet

SCG has some issues but come off as more professional, more streamlined and aware of how to run an event
they act like they have been there before

i notice legacy players have the luxury of ignoring (largely) what wizards does, because that company is so damn mismanaged and mark rosewater doesn't have a clue as to what is going on (he likes the high prices, he thinks lower prices = less players. if you notice the best sets over time are the ones where mark rosewater is not actually the creative director. (seriously go back in time and look)

maybe the answer is to actually ignore what WOTC wants to do with modern, and switch over to SCG events to play the format.

it is evident that wizards is in it strictly for the money rather than the health of the game

By the end of October after they've announced either Modern Masters 2 or another printing of Modern Masters, I assume you will have forgotten about all of your concerns?

no, i address this in the original post. they seem to be dropping WOTC support for the format.
if they release/announce another modern masters set in october it will just be a final cash grab on a sinking ship to to temporarily raise revenue going into the holiday season, so it will make potential hasbro shareholders think MTG is stronger than it really is (the standard format anyways)

investors don't know modern masters from born of the gods all they know is people play magic professionally and if they have sets that sell like modern masters why not invest!!!!! then get let down when they see standard set sales figs which are good but not modern masters good
    Posted in: Speculation
  • posted a message on I am still cocerned about the future of the [MODERN FORMAT]
So everyone seems to have forgotten about the close call, nearly all support for modern from the WOTC side being suddenly dropped. It seems wizards adding just 1 (one) single Pro tour and 1 (one) single grand prix has everyone claiming that wizards will never drop support for modern again or ever.

Hasbro is obviously forcing their hand and getting their 20% revenue dip up with all of the changes (more standard promotional tours, change in standard that should increase sales because they cut their underperforming sets aka third set of block and core sets)and a standard format which cuts an average of exactly one (1) fiscal quarter off of the standard format life of the cards, leading to more sales.

is the final solution to the hasbro increasing of quarterly profit increase phenomenon a cash out in modern masters 2 then just dropping the format entirely pushing the competitive modern players into standard? knowing that most modern players will go to third party sources to play modern , but generally will not break away from WOTC formatting and tournament scheduling?

I also want to allude to the fact that WOTC has indeed "promised" at least one regional PTQ as being offered in the modern format, but i feel that these will only be held in nation-states that don't have much of a magic the gathering standard format presence. Russia, brazil and other emrging markets where magic has been fluctuating and where sales have not been high enough to support a nation-wide standard format event.

I am also assuming that most local game stores will offer their one time per season Prelim. pro-tour qualifier as a standard format event. This is generally the most profitable format to run (sell sealed packs, largest playerbase and sell singles at a much faster rate than modern)

It's like you were $100 away from being bankrupted, you find $50 on the ground and you go back to spending and the old habits that got you in trouble in the first place.

I currently have 2 modern decks, and some staples for modern (nothing expensive) and i don't want to be left holding worthless cardboard. when is the optimal time to start selling out of modern? it seems the prices have not budged.

    What do you guys thik?

My bad on the Thalia, I forgot most of my matchups against the deck also run the artifact that does the same thing and I falsely accused Thalia as the 2/3 enabler.

Twin isn't too bad for infect. Neither is storm but both decks are more reliable as they go off quickly and effectively.
Infect kind of needs a Glistener and pump in the hand and a muligan reduces your chances of surviving on game 2 or 3. For the newer players that's what we use to establish tiers. There are a lot of turn 1 kill decks in modern that are tier 4 because they don't really work unless it has the perfect hand.

Just because infect is capable of a turn 2 or 3 win does not mean it's the best deck ever. It's hard to explain to newer/ younger players. Turn 2 is cool and all but a turn 2 necropede that was path to exiled..on a muligan to 5..a card that is a 3 of in a sealed product hoses your chances at winning game 1, turn 2 thought seize or inquisition and boom you lose...not very hard...

JUND is the best deck in modern hands down, when you stare at a JUND deck across the table you know why your deck is $75 on tcg mid and theirs is $3000 in tcg mid not counting foils....JUND is that ******* good.
A lot of people here have never played it just do to the sheer price f it. But there are 2 players with it in my meta and...****....I hate when they show up. These dudes have money. I can't stand the kids who grab $20 worth of cards from the bulk bin go 2-3 or 3-2 at an fnm against ***** like vampire tribal or mono green devotion on a high school kid budget then claim that infect has amazing matchups against amazing decks you used to see on the protour and how infect is the best deck ever..

It's the same crowd that pushes dabbled red in standard

Looks like there are plenty of creatures to build around, looks to be dominantly white. What type of spells should this deck play? Removal, token Makers like Raise the alarm , counters, bounce , burn . I guess we have a enough info to ruff in some deck Ideas.

i had more of a post-rotation RUG khan list in mind. imposing soverign looks to hose burn or thoughtseize but it's too easy to remove.

the morph mana dork that i on color also looks like a beat stick for the deck. 2/2 for 3 and morph for 2 to get a 2/1 mana dork that is on color.

since shock is rotating, maybe a few magma jet to hose other morph creatures and the scry effect will help a 3 color deck without fetchlands in standard.

phyrexian revoker could also shut off polukranous if they're slow enough with it.

torpor orb on a stick looks nice but white seems off color. i think blue will have some aggressive stuff printed
    Posted in: Standard Archives

So i noticed a number of legacy and modern playables being over looked in standard.

reclamation sage, phyrexian revoker, destructive revelry, eiodolon of the great revel, back to nature, anger of the gods.
these cards have all been popping up in the stronger formats.

back to nature, destructive revelry seem especially powerful in the current format. phyrexian revoker is worded so they cannot respond to it entering the battlefield with the ability you're turning off (which is why it sees legacy play). anger of the gods rains on rabble red/boss sligh and sometimes even mono-green

could there be a deck that spalshes these cards to hate on the metagame, while running cards like slyvan carytid and courser of kruphix? which do see some legacy and modern play but are by no means overlooked. these have been discovered for sure

we know for a fact that 3 color taplands are a cycle in the next set at uncommon (not that i want to discuss speculation here) but have any of you been running a deck like this?

lingering souls creates flying tokens. I would think tom ross' list likes the matchup he gets force of wills and daze which provides interaction rather than just being hated by GW. his modern list doesn't look to be up to snuff

with thalia out you should not be able to play a dismember and a blighted agent and vines

dismember would be a 5 cmc spell with 2 phyrex mana, blighted agent is 2 cmc, then your vines is a 4 cmc spell

'goyf makes it a 4 turn clock
