I have played this deck for weeks now, my list can be shown a bit further up. I struggle hard versus the Tier 1 aggro (Burn, affinity and Infect) and most other aggro strategies that relies on creatures. What you think about including 4 Lightning bolt? I am thinking about swapping the 2 Creeping tar pit and 1 Tectonic edge versus something like Steam vents, stomping ground and Frontier Bivouac. I am removing 2 Thoughtseize and Ashiok, Nightmare weaver due to the lackluster this cards are versus aggro.

Apr 14, 2015Since I play a lot of modern dailies @ MTGO I thought that I could share some of my experience with you guys. This is the deck I am currently running:Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Added Anticipate instead of the clumpsy Compulsive research because it does not feel that much better to draw three random cards and discard 1/2, when all we want is usually only 1 of the cards. Since anticipate is an instant it also feels great because of the interaction with keeping mana up for Cryptic Command/Mana leak/Shadow of Doubt. At the moment I am trying out a singleton of shadow of doubt in order to increase the winrate versus G/X Tron. I cut one Serum visions in order to do this change. It feels rather smooth at the moment due to the fact that Anticipate can help find those extra lands that serum visions sometimes has to.
An * at the current game means that I started.
Round 1 Versus Affinity (0-0)
Game one: He mulliganed to 6, I kept 7. He got a good and fast start, but I turn one Inquisition of Kozilek away his Steel overseer. Later he missplayed with Arcbound Ravager by not going all in on his manland. Eventually he went all in on his Blinkmoth nexus by saccing 3 artifacts to it and he got some damage in with it, dropping me down to 4. Then I Cryptic Command Bouncing his manland and next turn I follow up with a Jace, Architect of Thought which he couldn't handle with all his 1/1. Got rid of all the problematic cards with Thoughtseize/Inquisition of kozilek and Mana leak/Abrupt decay. Thragtusk sealed the deal.
Sideboarded out: 3Mana Leak, 3 Inquisition of Kozilek, 2 Thoughtseize, 2 Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, 1 Shadow of doubt
Sideboarded in: 1 Darkblast, 2 Disfigure, 1 Nature's Claim, 2 Feed the clan, 2 Fulminator mage, 1 dismember, 1 damnation, 1 Night of souls' betralyal
Game two:He mulliganed to 5, I kept 7. He started of with a great 5 cards hand by dropping Memnite, Blinkmoth Nexus, Vault skirge and Springleaf drum turn one. He followed this up with a turn two Master of Etherium. I had the Abrupt decay for the Master of Etherium and eventually a turn four damnation into a turn five Night of soul's betrayal. I was at 4 life at that point, but he didnt have any threat and I had a Thragtusk which I bounced with Cryptic Command to seal the deal.
Won with 2-0
Round 2 Versus Grixis Delver
Game one*: I Inquisition of Kozilek and see two Tasigur, the golden fang. I try to play around this by Thoughtseize one and Maelstrom Pulse the other. My Tasigur, the golden fang resolves but dies to a Terminate. Than he cast a delver of secrets which flips and he Lightning bolt me to death.
Sideboarded out: 2 Cryptic Command, 1 Jace, Architect of Thought, 2 Thoughtseize, 1 Shadow of Doubt
Sideboarded in 1 Darkblast, 2 Disfigure, 1 Dismember, 1 Damnation, 1 Feed the clan
Game two*: I Inquisition of Kozilek turn one to find out he has Snapcaster Mage x2, Mana Leak, Terminate and two Lands. I take a Snapcaster Mage since I didn't have an early threat. Later he Topdecks a Tasigur, the Golden fang which I damnation. He refills with another Tasigur, the golden fang and Young pyromancer. I snapcaster Mage into Damnation. Then he topdecks another Tasigur, the Golden fang and I topdeck land.
Lost with 0-2. This matchup feels rather bad since I can't handle his big threats, Gurmag Angler and Tasigur, the Golden fang, realiably. Meanwhile he has Murderous cut and terminate for my big dudes. Removing the cryptic command was a wrong choice, thought he was more aggro than midrange, but I was wrong.
Round 3 Versus Esper control (1-1)
Game one*: Some weird list with Mana Tithe, Azorious Charm and 4 Esper Charm. He could not handle me going Inquisition of kozilek/Thoughtseize into an Ashiok/Tarmogoyf/Jace, architect of thought.
Sideboarded out: 1 Damnation and 3 abrupt decay
Sideboarded in: 1 Thoughtseize, 2 Fulminator mage and 1 Dismember
Game two: Same as game one, waited for my hand Disruption and than resolved an Ashiok, Nightmare weaver that milled him to death. He even Sphinx's Revelation for 6 when he only had like 12 cards left in library.
Won with 2-0 (Easiest game I ever had @ MTGO since I started, never even saw a Wincon)Round 4 Versus Living End ()The deck felt great, except that Shadow of Doubt never had any use. I guess this card is more of a sideboard card versus Tron/Bloom/Scapeshift but my Sideboard needs to be dedicated to the real meta, which is Twin/Abzan/Infect/Affinity/Burn so I think I will cut the Shadow of doubt for another Serum visions again.
Game one*: He Mulled to 5, I kept 7. I Mana leak the first Living end and Cryptic Command the second. Tarmogoyf rode me to victory.
Sideboarded out: 2 Thoughtseize, 1 Shadow of doubt, 1 Slaughter pact
Sideboarded in: 1 Sower of temptation, 1 Damnation, 2 Fulminator mage,
Game two: I had a 5 land hand with Abrupt decay and Dismember. I draw an Inquisition of kozilek revealingLiving end and Shriekmaw, 2 lands and Cyclers. I took Living end since it was the only one I could take. When he did cascade I cryptic command it and Ashiok, Nightmare weaver took over the game.
Won with 2-0, leaving me with 3-1 at the daily.
Mar 31, 2015I agree to always include the Fulminators vs decks with manlands due to the fact that 2 Tectonic Edge doesn't really cut it. Don't have any spot at the moment to bring in Conutersquall since the sideboard needs to be dedicated versus aggro..Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Mar 31, 2015How do you guys sideboard versus Abzan, UWR Control and Twin? I saw Gerard keeping in both IoK/Thoughtseize and the mana leaks versus Abzan for example, but what to take in? Is it worth taking in Spellskite to protect Ashiok/Tarmogoyf? When to take out Jace/Ashiok?Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
Thanks for help
Mar 22, 2015Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)Quote from Yeahfootball_66 »Quote from Muten Yoshi »No, the only reason u like mandrills over goyf is really only budget reasons ^^
If you are going to play visions play 4. Also with so many delve creatures you should consider 2-3 thoughtscour which also lets you play murderous cut.
??? I have 3 thought scour in that list first off. Secondly, why do you think it's a budget call? If I wanted the damn goyfs I'd sell some of my 20 snapcasters or 6 lilianas, or some of my extra revised duals. Budget isn't the concern. Being able to weaken other tarmogoyf, trample, and helping get rid of cards I don't want back with a Tasigur activation are my reasons
But a turn one discard into a Goyf is such a strong play that it itself wins games. Therefore I would suggest Goyf Versus Mandrills.
Mar 22, 2015Versus mid-range like Junk and its friends this deck feels great. It has the answers and just outgrinds them. It is also HEAVILY favoured versus Twin for obvious reasons.Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)
But what about aggro like Burn/affinity/infect. These decks are huge in the meta right now, and with Atarka's command soon being legal, I think we can see an ever bigger percentage of Burn and the resurrection of small Zoo. How is Gerard's list versus these decks? Sure, we got some removal in Abrupt decay and cards that will slow them down (Mana Leak and Hand disruption) but is it really enough? In the side we pack Disfigure in order to get fast answers versus the tiny creatures, but aren't the deck heavily disfavoured game one? How do you feel versus the decks mentioned and how do you sideboard?
Nov 13, 2014My deck that I will bring to GP MadridPosted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Stacking up on Hallow in order to better my burn matchup. Going with 3 Basics is a choice made from empiric evidence playing the deck. Being able to find another basic if I get pathed/only wanna take 1 damage can be huge. I also chose to go Wear // Tear instead of Destructive Revelry because of the manacost and hence I need the basic Plains
Aug 18, 2014Posted in: Developing Competitive (Modern)Quote from CoolBeans39 »Quote from CurdBros »Thanks for posting your tourney notes. Those are great too see. It does make sense that Grim Lavamancer was not stellar given the decks you played against. He is an allstar in creature heavy or aggro matchups, but is not a great draw against tron, control, combo. It looks like there was no aggro where you played. That is unusual.
Tron is definitely a tough matchup. I play a Sowing Salt and, two Wear/Tear, and two Stony Silence in my sideboard to help with the tron matchup. If it gets really popular (which is it gaining in popularity right now), I will probably add another Sowing Salt.
There were a few aggro decks knocking about, I saw some affintiy players, I guess I just missed them all, I was expecting GBx to be a big thing and I didn't see any of that either. I'm going to another one this weekend, I'll probably change up the sideboard a little to give me some dedicated cards for Tron and Pod.
What about one main deck sowing salt, it also gets manlands so it's not terrible G1 when you aren't playing against Tron?
What do we do against Pod?
Maindeck sowing salt does not feel worth it unless meta is like 30% tron, which I doubt.
I usually board 2-3 Grafdigger's cage versus pod, works great!

I really like the Spell Pierce since it can protect my creatures early and also be useful versus a lot of other hate, for example Ensnaring bridge. Both Spell pierce and Judge's familiar scales with the mana denial from Stone rain and Ajani vengeant. I do understand your thoughts regarding snapcaster mage, tho I dont want to run a non-flier that is slow as Snapcaster mage. I feel a lot of creatures like kitchen finks will not be that big of a problem since my guys flies and I got a lot of removals in the deck aswell. The Swords will help me with the race aswell.
I prefer Stone Rain above Fulminator mage because I don't want double RR in the deck, and Stone rain flips delver I am also thinking of putting in 1 Academy ruins.
I will do some playtesting soon to be able to see how the deck rolls, but until then, give me more thoughts people!
Jul 30, 2014Antonlarsjohansson posted a message on [Idea] UWR Caw-Blade with Delver! Please help me develop this deck!Path to exile does not seem good with Spell pierce. And I dont think that any creature that Lightning bolt cant handle will not be that kind of a problem since the creatures are flying! Perhaps vs twin tho.Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
