So with Hanweir being spoiled and the flip mechanic turning out to be Eldrazi based now, at least for some cards, let me just say I'm out. I'm not buying into this set. Literally. I'll still follow along, but the only thing WotC cares about is money, and I'm not giving them mine.
They learned nothing - literally nothing from Zendikar. People don't want an Eldrazi takeover of their favorite planes if that means we give up what makes those planes unique. It's not just that we have more Eldrazi shoved down our throats right after the abomination that was the zendikar return, it's that they're slapping lipstick on a pig and trying to call it something else. Adding a creature type and transform mechanic to Eldrazi dosent make them "unique." It doesn't make this any less of yet another Eldrazi set, or change the fact that horror world is now eldrazi world. And guess what the broken cards in the set will be? Probably not wolves or vampires or spirits or angels, the hallmarks of Innistrad, but the Eldrazi, because we just have to see how "cool" and "powerful" they are. Congrats if you're an Eldrazi fan; the fatigued among us just lost. If it were maybe a dozen among 200+ cards, I'd be fine. But clearly it's not. It's a whole portion of the set.
I came into the game literally 2 weeks before Avacyn Restored released. It's my nostalgia set. I get my own bias. But you know what offsets shadowy, transylvanian horror world? Angels, light, hope. Shadows need light, and light needs shadow. Avacyn Restored got that. Avacyn was the focus, but Griselbrand was there and more powerful in card form in terms of most competitive play. For all of the bright angelic cards, there was still dark elements of horror to offset that. Where has that been at all this block? It's just more and more horror shoved down our throats.
We cared about Innistrad because we felt some love for the horror elements, but also a connection to the people light of the world. You can't tell me that all of the angel fans in the game didn't love the church and angelic overseers of the plane. Or that people didn't find characters to love among the tribe's and monstera of the world. Look at the laments throughout these forums over Avacyn's death and the desecration of Gisela and Bruna. We cared about the light as well as the Darkness and horror. We've only gotten death and corruption this trip. That isn't and never was Innistrad, no matter how much WotC sells the lie.
Emrakul is fine. A lazy cop-out that was better saved like a fine dessert for later, but fine as a villain. But turning Innistrad into Eldrazi world by adding "cosmic" in front of "horror world" doesn't make it any less of Eldrazi world now. And that sucks. There's no angel to save the world. No light against the dark. We have Liliana, maybe, to fight the greatest threat in the multiverse after the stupid Gatewatch shows up and Arlinn and Sorin are cast aside before they get a chance to do anything of value to the plot. The problem with Planeswalker heroics amidst planar devastation? Who do we hope to see when we return? Avacyn is gone, the church is ruined, any remaining angels outside of Sigarda are mad or corrupted, and any tribal legend we might grow attached to will either be Eldrazified, killed or shoved into a dark story corner and ignored.
This isn't good storytelling. This isn't Innistrad. This isn't any different than Zendikar except for a new coat of paint slapped on it. My angel is dead. My best friend, who already lost Elspeth just lost his two Commanders for shock value. All I have is Arlinn and Avacyn knows she'll get like 1 story while The Gatewatch struggle for no real reason for 5 chapters. I'm done. Enjoy the block. This message will be lost among these forums, an echo with no ears to hear it. But I'm out. Creative killed any love and excitement for the game I had left.

kmalsom posted a message on Emrakul, the Promised EndWay to be lazy, Wizards. Couldn't come up with anything original, so we'll just drag Emmy to Innistrad. Very poor usage of the story line. Could have been done much better. The card has a neat win conditions, and will be able to be cast for 9 commonly, but isn't unbeatable by any stretch.Posted in: Emrakul, the Promised End -

And it really pisses me off what they did to bruna and gisela. First they kill off avacyn and now they turn those two into that horrid creature
Bothers me too what has happened to the Angels. I didn't expect Innistrad to turn out a way I want, but this is shaping up to be one of the blocks I'll wind up disliking the most. But for others this is what they want, so I get why it's happening. -

RxPhantom posted a message on Emrakul, the promised endI don't really care about the card's power level right now. I'm more concerned about the now lackluster eldrazi making yet another appearance. BFZ block made them boring and uninteresting, yet here we are getting more of them. Simply put, the eldrazi are not compelling villains, and I was sick of them during BFZ spoiler season.Posted in: New Card Discussion - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
