The fact it is an Eldrazi breaks it for me. That and the poor story telling. I am sick of the Elfrazi. they sold it as a mystery, but is anyone really surprised? You seen her coming a mile away. Boring.

And it was mystery. We had no idea what is was. Emrakul was always in the running, when we didn't see her on Zendikar. Also, the Eldrazi might be done after this. If Emrakul is killed, we have no more titans unless WotC decides to make a few more.

    But to each there own.
It wasn't a mystery. They spelled it out.

The whole Emrakul thing had some major issues.

First There was no mystery. The second they sent Jace to Innistrad, I knew the plot revolved around Emrakul. That was before a single SOI card was reveled. The clues was plain. "They come in threes" nonsense removing all hope of an actual mystery. People hoped and prayed it wouldn't be the villain that was the most extremely obvious one. That hope was in vain. Before the big announcement of it was Emrakul people guessed it was a 13/13 for 13 and one guy even stated it would have an mindslaver effect and would have a cost saver effect based on cards types in the graveyard. There was no mystery and that was the problem. If most people seen it before they announced it it isn't going to excite the masses they way a good mystery could. The story telling as a mystery as it was billed was awful.

Second problem is we had the Watch VS. Eldrazi just last block. There was substantial burnout with Eldrazi especially for those that played limited or modern. The Battle/oath block was not a good limited environments largely do to color imbalances caused the Eldrazi. And until the ban hammer nailed the deck Eldrazi ruined modern as it was far too powerful. I am dreading another Eldrazi based set. Wizards has shown they can't get them right. They failed in all three sets they were in. It was too soon given the burn out of many.

Third problem is they could not match the power of the original Emrakul for balance reasons. That makes it so any card printed will not live up to the build up or it would break the game. There was no fixing this issue. But it disappointed some Emrakul fans.

Forth issue is we just seen a beloved plane wiped out and will never be the same plain they grew to love. There was more then a few disappointed in this. Now there is real fear by some that this will be Innistrad fate. I don't think it will be but some feel it will be. Innistrad is popular, in fact it is many peoples favorite plane. Many don't wan't it prematurely damaged like Zendikar. If it isn't then it really undermines Emrakul as the baddest Eldrazi of them all.

Lastly, Emrakul made a good floating threat. That threat is no longer floating. Other than chasing her away or trapping her, both of which would reduce her as a real treat, there is no good way to preserve both Innistrad and the Eldrazi. This is sloppy story telling on wizards part. After the trap/kill Emrakul there is little left for the gatewatch four/five to do as a team. They are going to have to jump through hoops to keep the band together. If Emrakul wins/flees then we get the same basic story again of Eldrazi vs. the Gatewatch. Reusing the same plot over and over again gets old.

As for Ulrich, I dislike flip cards so I could care less about him. I am not looking forward to the flip Eldrazi. Worse of the last two blocks. The Eldrazi that I am sick of and the flip cards that aren't good for paper draft in my opinion. I really don't like the flip cards. I do realize I am in the minority on flip cards. I really doubt I am in the minority about being sick of the Eldrazi though. I do get the disappointment in those wanting a tribal commander. Ulrich is a poor fit for that. He does nothing for the tribe as a whole. Solid card but a poor commander.

So with Hanweir being spoiled and the flip mechanic turning out to be Eldrazi based now, at least for some cards, let me just say I'm out. I'm not buying into this set. Literally. I'll still follow along, but the only thing WotC cares about is money, and I'm not giving them mine.

They learned nothing - literally nothing from Zendikar. People don't want an Eldrazi takeover of their favorite planes if that means we give up what makes those planes unique. It's not just that we have more Eldrazi shoved down our throats right after the abomination that was the zendikar return, it's that they're slapping lipstick on a pig and trying to call it something else. Adding a creature type and transform mechanic to Eldrazi dosent make them "unique." It doesn't make this any less of yet another Eldrazi set, or change the fact that horror world is now eldrazi world. And guess what the broken cards in the set will be? Probably not wolves or vampires or spirits or angels, the hallmarks of Innistrad, but the Eldrazi, because we just have to see how "cool" and "powerful" they are. Congrats if you're an Eldrazi fan; the fatigued among us just lost. If it were maybe a dozen among 200+ cards, I'd be fine. But clearly it's not. It's a whole portion of the set.

I came into the game literally 2 weeks before Avacyn Restored released. It's my nostalgia set. I get my own bias. But you know what offsets shadowy, transylvanian horror world? Angels, light, hope. Shadows need light, and light needs shadow. Avacyn Restored got that. Avacyn was the focus, but Griselbrand was there and more powerful in card form in terms of most competitive play. For all of the bright angelic cards, there was still dark elements of horror to offset that. Where has that been at all this block? It's just more and more horror shoved down our throats.

We cared about Innistrad because we felt some love for the horror elements, but also a connection to the people light of the world. You can't tell me that all of the angel fans in the game didn't love the church and angelic overseers of the plane. Or that people didn't find characters to love among the tribe's and monstera of the world. Look at the laments throughout these forums over Avacyn's death and the desecration of Gisela and Bruna. We cared about the light as well as the Darkness and horror. We've only gotten death and corruption this trip. That isn't and never was Innistrad, no matter how much WotC sells the lie.

Emrakul is fine. A lazy cop-out that was better saved like a fine dessert for later, but fine as a villain. But turning Innistrad into Eldrazi world by adding "cosmic" in front of "horror world" doesn't make it any less of Eldrazi world now. And that sucks. There's no angel to save the world. No light against the dark. We have Liliana, maybe, to fight the greatest threat in the multiverse after the stupid Gatewatch shows up and Arlinn and Sorin are cast aside before they get a chance to do anything of value to the plot. The problem with Planeswalker heroics amidst planar devastation? Who do we hope to see when we return? Avacyn is gone, the church is ruined, any remaining angels outside of Sigarda are mad or corrupted, and any tribal legend we might grow attached to will either be Eldrazified, killed or shoved into a dark story corner and ignored.

This isn't good storytelling. This isn't Innistrad. This isn't any different than Zendikar except for a new coat of paint slapped on it. My angel is dead. My best friend, who already lost Elspeth just lost his two Commanders for shock value. All I have is Arlinn and Avacyn knows she'll get like 1 story while The Gatewatch struggle for no real reason for 5 chapters. I'm done. Enjoy the block. This message will be lost among these forums, an echo with no ears to hear it. But I'm out. Creative killed any love and excitement for the game I had left.
Amen. This story is horrid and so, so predictable. I even called Eldrazi flip cards. Stupid waste of two sets. Enough with the Eldrazi. We did that last set. Same heroes same basic villain. Flip cards is among my least favorite mechanics do to how it taints drafts. And the Eldrazi is my least favorite magic villains and creature type. They now combined to make a mess out of a block. I like the world of feel of Innistrad but the horror world is gone and became Eldrazi waste of a world. I am not buying any of this set other then singles and maybe a few drafts as non-Eldrazi based drafts will be hard to find. (I am addicted to limited, I even drafted homelands.) But I already canceled my pre-order for this set. This set is looking bad. I can care less about the power level. The story is tired and predictable, worst mystery ever. The cards are flip Eldrazi predictable and my least favorite kind of card combined with my least favorite creature type. So now we have no horror world. Great. And don't feed me this classic horror stuff. If this is now that then so was Zendikar so it is redundant. What a waste.

I hope not. I hope the Eldrazi are utterly destroyed never to curse anther set again. I don't care if we ever see Innistrad again or not. Fun plane but flip cards are bad for limited in my opinion. I just want Eldrazi to go away and never ever comeback. Too bad, that I doubt they will utterly destroy the last of the titans. Wizards seems to be in love with the most uninteresting of villains. The moon thing makes sense since it is the most predictable of outcomes preserving both the Eldrazi to ruin even more blocks, and Innistrad which is a fun world. Or maybe they can drive her away so they can follow and make the horrid "Eldrazi VS The Gatewatch 3: Eldrazi on Kaladesh" and so on. Personally I think they are smart enough to shelve them for now and they trap Emrakul on the moon. It is easily the most obvious of solutions and that is all Wizards can do as far as plot. Emrakul was so obvious, so why should her temporary defeat be any less?

    Can't please everyone I guess.

I love the continuity going on here. I really like how Nahiri is exacting the most absurdly extreme revenge against sorin, for shutting her inside the helvault for hundreds of years.

So what if the eldrazi come back for a single set. What's the problem? This is a cool continuation and a nice storytelling anchor.

It's certainly not ruined the story, and it isn't objectively bad storytelling either.

In three months you won't be seeing eldrazi again for years. Chill and enjoy the spectacle. It's fun.
No I will be seeing them for the next year and a half in standard. They sold this block as a MYSTERY, the only mystery is how annoyed people will get with the total lack of MYSTERY in there mystery. Continuity? True we have the same good guys and the same bad guys, with the same goals, just on a different plane. Might as well be the same block. Boring. Guess now we will have flip Eldrazi. The story telling would have been tons better if the blocks was reversed. They built the how story arc backwards. You never announce the big baddie then play guess who. And personally if I ever see another Eldrazi based set it will be too soon. I didn't enjoy Rise of the Eldrazi, I hated Battle for Zendikar, and Oath of the Gatewatch while better than Battle for Zendikar wasn't that fun. Eldrazi just is fun for me.

I am glad someone likes mysteries with no mystery. Someone even called Emrakul would be a 13/13 for 13 with a Mindslaver like comes into play ability. So much for mystery. Or even a slightly unpredictable story arc. Worse mystery ever and that is exactly what they billed it as. Not "Eldrazi VS. the Gatewatch 2: We Really Have Zero New Ideas So We are Mixing One of Our Best Worlds With Our Worst Block EVER". I hope they never ever print anther Eldrazi themed set again, like ever. IF they do I will not buy it like I normally do, just like I will not buy a single pack out of this set. I may draft it as I love limited even did a Homelands draft a few weeks ago as I love limited, may buy a few singles I need to be competitive in standard but I will not crack a single pack of any Eldrazi themed set again. They haven't been fun and honestly the story here isn't fun as it was so predictable.

Ok so this is just speculation but: I am on board with all the people who say "Storyline fail" BUT what if instead of other Eldrazi this gives the creators a chance to wholly change existing Innistrad characters into new crazy creatures? Then i would be like "yea storyline fail, BUT it was worth it to have this crazy Bruna/Gisela monstrosity card". Just saying, what if we get an even more powerful Liliana? Then was it worth it? I would say yes Slant
Not for me. They done mutated monsters before. The power level would be similar to existing creatures or it will ruin the game do to power imbalance. When one set is more powerful then its peers it reduces deck choice. That isn't good. I played during the Urza block and Mirrodin and they wasn't all that fun until the ban hammer beat the ***** out of those blocks. And Liliana if mad stronger could break the game. Most versions of her are already at the top of the power curve, a stronger Liliana card would be bad for the health of the game. Balance is needed and if too strong of a set is released ether the ban hammer comes out or the next block will needs be weakened. The weakness of BFZ block is because Tarkir was above the curve on power. If what you propose happens and there is extra power in the set to make up for the horrid story telling then it compounds the failure. No thanks.

I am disappointed. While I knew better I was hoping the big baddie was anything else. I don't care if the card is good or not, I will not play it. I am not buying my normal box ether. I like magic stories and this is an epic fail. First it is redundant. Eldrazi was the big bad last block, then again on this one. It was supposed to be a mystery but every thing pointed to it. So what mystery? There is nothing fun here. This is bad story telling. Two thumbs down.

As for the card, we seen everything on it before. It is just a bad mindslaver bolted on a big body. Is it playable? Most likely, but I rather play Ulamog. I will not play it. In my mind it ruined the story for the block. I am completely not interested in this set now. What can I say story is important to me and they put out a mystery that everyone knew who done it page one. Even as many pointed out it was 13/13 for 13. Now that shows a complete and utter predictable and lack of creativity. One person even guessed the Mindslaver part. This is costing the Magic creative department my respect.

With clues in blue I never let them flip on my turn and if they loose tempo not casting on theirs well great a good piece of removal later the're playing catch up. Got to love it when opponents give you a free time walk.

Not sure what you mean. Sacrificing a clue does not equal casting a spell and has no bearing on whether wolves flip or not.

Be a man and take the hit, play your JtW in their end step.

It prevent potential werewolves flipping if they didn't play anything. (And they thus wasted their 'skip turn'.) It prevent it from being replayed. If they replay it they prevent existing WW from flipping and it won't flip for another turn at the least. It's worthwhile to take the hit.

Sometimes they can get to 9 power. Still think that is worth 'taking the hit'? They can alpha strike on turn 5 a lot of games.

You miss understand me clues give cards cards unless they are lands are spells. If you are drawing multiple cards a turn you always have spells to play, well usually any way. If you always have spells to play dumb little werewolves stay little. If they stay little and you kill they don't kill on turn 5. Again I drafted tonight and still haven't lost to wolves. My black/red mostly vampires deck took first. Green is the strongest color thus over drafted.

I have had my best draft luck in blue/black control with a madness sub-theme. The two drafts it was open I never even lost a game let alone a match and it wasn't even close. One of the decks even lacked rares. Control is real in this set if built right and not fought over. I also had luck with Black/red control with a heavy madness theme swept once and came out second after loosing to an green/white/blue deck that just way out resourced me. Never once lost a match to werewolves in 8 drafts and 4 sealed events. If you go for underplayed colors with heave evasion and removal focusing on evasion/removal/cheap effective blockers with big toughness numbers (4 plus) wolves can be beat. With clues in blue I never let them flip on my turn and if they loose tempo not casting on theirs well great a good piece of removal later the're playing catch up. Got to love it when opponents give you a free time walk.

For mass +1 counter distribution, Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest has been an all star for me. I've especially liked him with new Clue tokens, such as from Tireless Tracker and Ulvenwald Mysteries (though that one makes non-saprolings).

Likewise, I've had success with Perilous Forays in token decks to really get the mana production going.

Other sources of +1 counters can include Archangel of Thune, which can also go infinite with Spike Feeder. If you don't want to go infinite, Spike Weaver is a powerhouse of survival with your commander and +1 counter themes.

Hardened Scales is also very powerful with Ghave, as it lets him increase the +1 counters on himself, as well as doubling his effectiveness on other creatures. Blade of the Bloodchief is another option to restock him with counters. You can just ignore the vampire bit.
That sounds fun. I might try that out after I get done working on my current project.

If you like Expedition Map, then Wayfarer's Bauble is a Rampant Growth that gets returned by Sun Titan.

Depending on how many 1cost artifacts you then run, Auriok Salvagers can start to look interesting. (Even more, and Salvaging Station looks interesting, but then you have a radically different deck).

If you run Relic Seeker, I strongly suggest adding Sword of the Animist for ramp.

Akroma's Vengeance may prove overall more useful than Martial Coup, depending on how much you need those soldiers. I'd normally suggest Tragic Arrogance, but you look to prefer the destroy route with your commander, and I typically run TA to deal with board states like yours.

Thanks for the ideas. I have been looking at Sword of the Animist and I like it my fear is I am having issues keeping things alive early. I am drawing tons of hate early. I just don't think I will be able to ramp with the sword do to everything I play dying quickly and only half of it is me wrathing the world to live till I take over with Avacyn, Angel of Hope plus a repeatable board wipe. Now I think you are more than right about Akroma's Vengeance. It will be added. I am having issues with a certain blue/white enchantment based deck and it will make that match up better with out cost to the over all strength of the deck. Thank you.

You could try out Emeria Shepherd, that card is bonkers in mono white. I'm also a big fan of cards like Sword of the Animist and Knight of the White Orchid

Well Sword of the Animist keeps coming up. Guess I should try it as I own one. Journeyer's Kite is the most choice for a card swap for Sword of the Animist with. Journeyer's Kite does some amazing work with some of my discard effect cards like Mageta the Lion. I'll have to see which helps more. The sword diffidently works better with my equipment finding package. As for Knight of the White Orchid It is great on turn two but doesn't do anything useful for me late game. And your right Emeria Shepherd is great. Problem the late game slot is very crowded. What would you take out for it?

I know it's a bit situational but it's hard to argue in mono white, especially with your apparent love for wrath effects. Have you thought about Mass Calcify?

I didn't even know it existed. Interesting and I love wrath effects. I will conciser it. I am also looking at Descend upon the Sinful as well. There is tons of wonderful white wraths to look at and that is what makes this so fun.

Thanks all I will keep reading and tweaking. I really love this deck. It is already one of the stronger decks in my meta and I will tweak it tell it is hated out.

How do you feel about a card like Expedition Map? You have some good utility lands, I'd imagine tutoring them could help. Works well with Trading Post
Honestly never thought of it. I like it. Fetching Thawing Glaciers, Boseiju, Who Shelters All, Kjeldoran Outpost, Dust Bowl or what ever land I need looks stronger then Thought Vessel which is just ramp in my deck. If I need ramp I could just fetch Temple of the False God and get similar value. thanks again.

First off welcome to the format Smile It is a great format for many reasons and I love your starting deck, as a personal favorite of mine, you can see my Avacyn Decklist if you like

As for how do you get the Creature (19) you put them in the text but do not put a number infront of them

    Such as

    Creatures (19)

    8 Avacyn, Angel of Hope
    blah
    blah
    Blah
Thanks for the info. I looked up your Army of the Heavens, Lead by the Angel of Hope deck. I like it as I like theme decks. Its goals are a bit different then mine but it looks fun. Thanks.

Weathered Wayfarer is a great add to mono white and will feel like Sol Ring if you have it opening hand. Note it says Land, as opposed to anything specific.

You have a lot of equipment tutors. Like, all of them I think. Widening your array of choices could help. Maybe consider Loxodon Warhammer for the option to gain life, Sword of Vengeance for a little everything, Sword of Light and Shadow is great as it protects Avacyn from the most common exile sources. Darksteel Plate may seem pointless, but Avacyn will be hated out some games and it could be a good idea to have a second way to try and push damage in through a board wipe. Obviously the former equipment is a lot better, but with all the tutors you can afford to play around and make sure they're really tested.

You may also want to add Trading Post. It can do a lot of work, most importantly trading in rocks late game for lost equipment.

I really liked the idea of Sword of Light and Shadow,Trading Post, and Weathered Wayfarer. they now in the deck. I also thought of adding Magnifying Glass to ramp early/mid game and draw late game. Thanks for the ideas. I tested for the first time today in a 4v4 and won 3 out of 4 games. The last game was strange. I won off of Platinum Angel plus Avacyn, Angel of Hope protected by Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves. Couldn't attack because of Moat and Mystic Decree backed with counters combo. Decked the last of them in the end after being at negative life (-134 life), over 21 commander damage by two different commanders and out of cards to draw for several turns. But a win is a win. The new deck list.

I got a question how do you get the creature (19) in bold into the lists?
