People talking about "stakes." Well, here are the stakes: if Bolas had won, the Multiverse would have been his forever, and he would reign over infinite Planes and infinite lives with an iron fist for eternity.

Who lives and who dies on Ravnica are not the stakes. The stakes aren't the number of named Planeswalkers we lose in this battle. The stakes are what happens if Bolas wins.

Now, we can debate whether or not our losses on Ravnica reflected, emotionally, the GRAVITY of those stakes. But the stakes in MTG's story have never been higher. Not even in Apocalypse.
    .

    Here's the thing...thats absolutely false.

Those are not real 'stakes' because.../spoilers....it was never going to happen. He was never going to win. So no, the stakes are not higher in that regard.

That doesn't mean you need to kill off half the cast. No one is saying "death is bad", but just killing people for no good reason because you feel the stakes aren't enough is emotionally shallow writing.

Sure, doing it for 'no good reason' is pretty low brow.

Doing it because its the termination, the culmination, the end, of the story arc, that is plenty of reason. If Magic has a story, and clearly it does, then it seems to me, it should be the story of Magic, of the Multiverse, of the Planes.

Gideon falling brought back a lot of memories, it hits on tropes that have been present since stories of the White Knight, the Paladin, existed. It adds gravitas to the story of Magic, that even the noble will fall.

Honestly its probably a bit much to have MULTIPLE main characters die, because I doubt it could be done justice over the cards like Gideon was. Domri gets merked, but he never had depth in the first place so yeah a few cards. Dack? Well he's a sideshow anyway really, was not part of the 'main' story all that much.

In the end I expected this to be an ending for the gatewatch, foolish on my part in hindsight, but it is what it is.

Gideon's death however redeemed the story of this set for me.

I mean didn't they just randomly kill of Dack? Like I said you cannot put the genie back in the bottle previously Heroes died a lot especially in the Finale where Yawgmoth dropped plenty of Heroes be they Walkers or Not to put down Phyrexia.

Killing a bunch of no names does nothing for stakes.

They killed three people, as many as they have since the card type was established. It's a sizable number relatively speaking. And it's still causing plenty of people to be upset because Dack, Gideon, and even Domri have fans. No need to make people miserable just because some have a bizarre desire to have others be unhappy. It won't improve the story any, as the only answer that makes the story good amounts to "everyone dies and Bolas wins" so far.

I dont agree at all. Gideon going out like he did, was the best thing that happened out of this and actually added emotional weight to the story. To the point that I'm now a fan of the guy and building a deck around him.

People have tried BUG (it is after all in the BGx family) and there is some success, but it doesnt get enough out of the 3rd colour, mostly because Blue is actually not good, dont let UW Terminus fool you.

Bant (notice the colour Blue again) is also not great, when you can either play Knightfall (Turn 3 wins are nice) or GW Counters (Turn 3 wins are nice) and thats that.

Playing a true reactive controlling game is just putting the game into hard mode.

No need at all to bail those colours out, just play them with appropriate expectations.

Do we know what happens to the God-Eternals? I feel especially a connection to Bontu for some reason.

Well that all sounds positive so far but with risk from the pros breaking it in the future. That is a good review so far IMO, but I also still worry about a few decks getting broken in the future.

Also, did everyone see the new GSZ, finale of devastation?

Yeah, I hate that Tron can use it...

I wouldn't suggest looking into the storyline thread. Seems that many people who hate the storyline so far are actually trying to find the worst possible interpretation of events at the moment. At this point nothing in the actual story could please these people (well except all of the Gatewatch and nearly all planeswalkers dying seemingly).

I'd settle for most of the gatewatch being maimed, traumatized, and the organization being dissolved. Personally.

Well, you can obviously have that opinion, it's just that I get the feeling that there are certain people who are not happy until everyone shares their negative view on everything regarding this story (and will constantly write as if their opinions were objective fact) and who try to portray story points in as bad a light as possible even if more positive interpretation are given by the story itself (again, it's not the fact they don't like them that I can't stand, it's the attitude that only their opinion should matter). That's not the case for you as far as I can see, but definitely for the post I answered to. Also, well, the all were traumatized at least once during the whole Gatewatch arc (through Emrakul, the Amonkhet gods or Bolas), so there is that.^^

Yeah, I'm not down on the idea of the arc. In fact following the story of Bolas through all these sets is really quite amazing. I also feel that the story of Gideon has been quite good, and this is imo the logical, meaningful, conclusion of it.

I just wish we saw that for the rest of the gatewatch as well, because I find the whole concept, a poor one. I want DIFFERENT stories now. I dont want Gatewatch. I want to follow Karn. I want to follow Teferi. We got a number of new Walkers from this set, where do they go, what do they do?

I'm just worried we are going to be stuck with Chandra/Jace/Liliana forever, and I'm REALLY tired of them as characters.

    GW - Druid Counters
    RG - RG Eldrazi?
UG - There's a fun aggro build you could do here.
    Bant - Knightfall for sure.
    Sultai - Not sure.
    Temur - Monkey Grow

So the happily ever after ending is real after all.
This story is a utter trash.
Apocalypse and Time Spirale are masterpieces of drama and tragedy compared to this.
This war was a joke the whole time.

This at least makes sense, as Theros has an afterlife. I'm not upset by it. This is the logical conclusion of his arc.

Changing out of nowhere conveniently to a plane where there is a heaven the last minute you know you are going to die seems to me the most horrible way to force a happy ending to me.
Urza, Venser, Gerrard....they are in no heaven. They have no consciousness, they are truly lost forever into an eternal nothingness.
Gideon is just a happy spirit of nyx now. It's totally irrelevant that is dead, if you have a consciousness as a ghost you are not truly death in this game. He even got a better fate of Elspeth, and that's another character that can lazily be resurrected in any moment for plot conveniences.

Well, how do 'souls' function in the Multiverse anyway? Does each one have an afterlife, or are they depending on the Plane in question?

I can quickly head canon a way to have this both make sense, and be a satisfying ending to a characters story. This is how stories SHOULD end. Its why I find the whole rest of the story arc immensely unsatisfying. This at least makes sense.

Finally some feels. Gideon quickly has shot up my ladder of 'Walkers that are worth caring about' rankings.
