So helm of the host is probably one of my favorite cards in the new set. Just the crazyness it allows is amazing. I don't actually have a decklist yet, just an idea that I'm hoping to get some feedback/card choices on. What the goal of the deck would be, is to resolve a gideon, helm of the host, and keep equipping it getting an additional gideon every turn. Use your new free gideon to fog something every turn, and then eventually just drown them in fogging gideons. Once you have enough gideons to effectively fog everything, then start going for damage. Or be be an evil person and mill them out with an emblem and an army of fogging gideons. Since this requires 12 mana of do nothing, I was thinking of doing it in a bant/4 color control list. Ramp, counter magic/draw, and removal/sweepers. And ofc Mastermind's Acquisition to find your final combo piece Maybe even just abzan and no blue, or a very light blue splash to for a pair of searchs, and incase Urzas ruinious blast is a thing.
Thoughts? Think a deck like this could work at an fnm/showdown type of level? Are there any cards to help search out helm of the host, or make it easier to equip?
Been playing this deck since around the first ixalan set. I'd play it on FNMs, showdowns, and other small "tournaments" over the week. My LGS has some fairly competent/competitive players who mostly play meta decks. Between rivals of ixalan and the first ixalan i had a record of 93-70-7, with most losses being to pre ban ramanup red. Since the ban I've had alot more success vs red decks. I did play it at a single pptq, where i started out 3-0 then lost to the two red decks that ended up being 1st/2nd in the event and were likely the two best players at the event.
that was my first iteration of the deck. With the release of the 2nd ixalan set I've added Mastermind's Acquisition so i don't lose to a single Lost Legacy games 2/3, cutting out the red cards. I still run bolas for funsies, even tho I've never won a game where I've cast him
I've cut red cards, and other finishers in exchange for counter magic and Masterminds. I've cut gideon for a 3rd compass, since the I'm trying to essentially do the same thing with them except gideon is much more vulnerable, and winning via attack is a very rare occurrence.
The majority of the time the deck wins by casting approach. However against slower decks, with 9 deserts milling with the Ipnu Rivulets happens quite often as well. Games will go long, and you build up your deserts and eventually shoot their deck for 8 a couple turns in a row to win the game. In games where you side in Regal Caracal, always keep in mind you can sacrifice Hashep Oasis or Shefet Dunes for additional life gain when attacking.
I also want to try to somehow fit a Ramunap Excavator so i can recycle my desert effects
-1 contempt from side board, + crook of condemnation. -1 Land mainboard, +1 archs of orazca. Still wanting to add that oketras last mercy in there but idk what I'd cut. Same with a lost legacy :/. Maybe cut the side navigator? Idk tho
okay so been playing this list a few weeks at fnms and showdown today. Winning record every time so far. The deck is very fun to play if you like slow grindy decks. Playing against slower decks i feel like you have an advantage in most situations if they let you ramp. Search for azcanta and the draw land get ya theree. Red is hard but winnable games 2 and 3 if they don't have a great start. Getting to 8 mana and planar bridge lets you just start bringing out cats and gift of paradise from your deck.
Approach is annoying because you gotta respect censor, so can't really hour on 4/5. I don't mind jamming out spring or gift of paradise into a censor tho. Vehicles is a hard matchup but luckily nobody plays it in my area. only played vs grixis once and the game took forever but I'm sure the matchup isn't too great since abrade. Tokens and GPG I'm pretty sure are near auto wins due to the sweepers and scavenging grounds. Rekindling phoenix is annoying af and I've only played against it once, couldn't draw a cast out or settle. Have to play against one of those decks more.
Having a ton of fun playing the deck, would recommend to anyone who likes playing grindy magic, drawing, winning 1-0, and playing playable jank.
Masterminds Acquisition is insane tho. Honestly love this card
ever since timestream navigator got spoiled, I've wanted to try to brew up some sort of infinite turns deck. This is my favorite thing to do in edh, and we finally get an extra turn card doesn't self exile in idk how long (as long as ive been playing). So naturally I wanna upset someone in standard
This is a deck I've been playing for awhile, and I'm going to be altering it to fit infinite turns instead of approach. Cutting the big cards in exchange for the combo pieces, keeping the ramp and removal, and utility cards.
Apparently there's two ways to go infinite (that i know of). One being 2x skyship plunderer, timestream navigator, and saheli rai. The other being Planar bridge+time stream navigator and 12 mana. I'm going to be doing the bridge route, so ramping into it seems the only possible solution. I'm thinking 2 timestream, 1 planar bridge, and 2 or 3 Mastermind's Acquisition and having 1 time stream and 1 bridge in my side. To actually win the game, I'm considering having an Approach of the second sun in my side as well as commit//memory to recycle my torment of hailfire if i choose to keep it.
any ideas on how to build this deck and if it would be possible at an fnm level?
i had a buddy who won a game this past format on a mulligan to 5 with no lands. He was playing ramp and had some ramp spells and an oath in hand and scry'd an oath? i think that's how it went. He was on the play, kept and passed and the guy was like "youre on the play." his response was something like "that's correct."
he feels he has a better chance on a 5 card no land hand than a mulligan to 4 regardless of what the cards are.
I think, the best color to go along with the goblins would be black, due to all the removal, Kolaghans command, and Read the bones.
I don't think grixis/blue offers the deck much, and I'm not sold on playing a wedge so that just leaves us with jund. I just don't know what other cards to play around it :/. Myabe just a BR deck? Idk pulse of murasa is really good :/
thoughts? I like planeswalkers, and really like thing in the ice right now.
trying out narset atm. Her slot used to be an ojutai (1 and 1 were side and main) and i never really liked the ojutai in this deck. He seems too expensive if he just comes down and dies like he does alot of the time :|. I wanna add a westvale abby but donno what to cut. Adding a colorless land i feel like I'd have to cut a spell. 26 lands felt alright. Idk how much i like the 1 of ob nixilis. every time i drew him i was like, meh. Maybe cut Ob nix for the abby, or another giddeon i was thinking.
There aren't many control players at my local meta so idk how bad my matchup is but i can imagine it's pretty bad with so much dead removal game 1
thoughts? Really like thing in the ice. Cards super fun to play and is actually really good it seems. Want to find room for another sorin somehow.
Manabase probably needs work, it's almost the same exact manabase i used for esper dragons -1 swamp -1 island +1 plains, didn't have time to work on one before fnm tonight.
Ever after was foil and altered ego was my promo. my pool was very good, and i had a few people look at it who are fairly good at sealed and said I probably could've gone any color combo and had a good deck. the multi color rares took me into those colors and i was happy with it. I had 2 forests in the deck, along with the colorless/search land as well as the 1/3 scarecrow that searches for 2 lands. Didn't really have many other playables other than sideboard cards. only card i swapped in/out allnight was Uninvited Geist out for the opponent mills 3 on derlium trigger against a grindy opponent, he had a few of that 0/4 that gets +3 on derlium and i couldn't get through.
Tamiyo's Journal s insane and easily won me a match or two. The clone ended up winning me 30 minute G1 in the last round by copying his flipped land (idr the name :|), eventually i drew my sleep paralysis to turn his off and won game 1 then lost G2
here's what i got atm, work in progress. Any help with land base would be appreciated. I have the Dlord Silumgars, but trying out necromaster dragon for now. I think creating blockers and just having a fodder creature against to the slaughter may be good.
How do people feel about new jace? I personally really like him but see everyone running Jace VIP. If we aren't taking advantage of delerium or madness i think new jace is where we'd rather be.
what's the main incentive to run jace in a draw go control deck?
last format we had a lot of proactive spells we could cast like crackling doom, this format doesn't seem so nice to us on flashbackable cards
running jace also makes it so you can't run narset or new jace.
Bouncing 2 with new jace is huge, it forces your opponent to answer jace with 2 smaller threats or direct damage of some sort (assuming we've been done a good job of keeping the board clean)
i also don't like how literally every black deck can now deal with him flipped or not with to the slaughter
The biggest thing jce has going for him atm imo is he just fixes so many draws so well. last format i could look at a hand, see turn 2 jace with 2 lands and feel perfectly safe. If he dies well then he dies.
Thoughts? Think a deck like this could work at an fnm/showdown type of level? Are there any cards to help search out helm of the host, or make it easier to equip?
atm i play a 4 color hour of promise approach deck and i get a mill win a decent amount of the time against slower decks.
I don't think a straight up mill deck is feasible
