PRO:
- plays super smooth without the rhinos and mana dorks and the white is only a little slpash for the lingering souls. Tasigur is mostly a 2-3 drop.
- darkblast is a reak bomb!
- nice manabase
- dark confidant does some work. board it out in aggro matchups.
cons:
- no rhinos, no lifegain in creature form
- no path to exile
- no gavony township
- junk cons.. no bolt, no anger of gods,
Scooze is lifegain, and in most matchups it'll be the right amount of lifegain that you need.
no Path is *not* a drawback, no path is good. I love the decklist. Ive been feeling like rhino is too top heavy for the deck for a while now.
I posted about my Rock deck a week and a half ago, and asked for suggestions/thoughts but no one responded because no one likes straight B/G Rock! [post#1567 in this thread]
But, for those of you thinking Obliterator Rock is dead, it's not... I just got 12th place at the 220 man SCG event in Dallas, beating two pros along the way.
I won't go into all the detail unless you specifically ask, but I'll tell you what I played against and some of the cards that worked well.
W: Bogles (that deck is almost a bye for B/G decks)
W: Soul Sisters
W: Jund (Todd Anderson)
W: Grixis Twin
L: Burn
L: Robots
W: Burn (Anthony Lowry)
W: Robots, with Tarmogoyf
Few small notes:
- I was able to cast Obliterator with Treetop, Treetop, Tectonic Edge and Urborg once.(I almost think I want a second Urborg.)
- I beat Todd Anderson on two lands after he Fulminator Mage'd me three times in one game (two hard-cast, and Kolaghan's Command getting one back) because I was able to cheat in a Baloth on the command that he was never able to answer.
- Vampire Nighthawks were good against both burn and affinity.
- Crux of Fate is only because I don't own Damnation (but it should be that if you want to play my list).
- Bow of Nylea was super good against Robots. (gain 3 life, or shoot your flier EVERY SINGLE turn)
- Leyline was for Storm, Protean Hulk, Living End and Delve decks but I never boarded it in because I didn't see those decks (still like it as a one-of though).
- Victim of Night was so good all day (killing an Inkmoth when I was at eight poison, for example). (Only time it was "bad" was against Todd's Olivia; otherwise, it was an all-star.)
Deck felt real strong, and I'm honestly thinking of taking it to GP Charlotte next month.
Congrats on your top16! How did you like the MD golgari charm? Have you considered the splash for red? makes your affinity and burn matchup so much better, and the only thing you lose is tectonic edge. You still run the same amount of fetches and shocks. Or do you just not like bob right now?
Is there any reasoning to arrive at your numbers for Finks, nighthawk, tasigur, thragtusk, and Arena?
theyre under new management at a new location called Forgotten Path Games now. Doing pretty well. Thier schedule is modern monday standard wednesday then they run both formats plus draft on friday nights. You can find 'em on facebook too.
My name is Doug and I live in Vallejo, and can host small casual groups. Looking to play Vintage until I get enough standard cards together. Not really into EDH.
I haven't played since Zendikar. Even then I wasn't all that good because I had no friends that wanted to buy/build their own decks, so I knew all their decks. I got destroyed anytime I went to Eudemonia. It didn't occur to me until later that I would benefit from religiously studying every card, as opposed to just the ones I had. I just enjoyed the artwork and playing with my friends. I have one Vintage deck at the moment, and I'm looking into buying more cards soon. I have a buddy coming over Monday to school me so maybe he'll loan me a deck or two. I'm 28.
Hi doug. Have you checked out the Card shop in napa? Hall of Gamerz does monday modern, tuesday standard, and friday draft. after draft on fridays sometimes we fire a 2nd event.
No. twin has nothing to do with it. It has to do with a shift away from abrupt decay to things that kill 4cmc creatures, meaning that people are more likely to have answers for obliterator. Its really a metagame call. Id rather be playing Jund right now. Olivia is even better against siege rhino.
There arent really any new cards for the deck right now. The deck is definitely a little worse right now since so many decks are playing terminate and path (blame siege rhino)
I got my Pacts confused. Guess I've sold too many parts of my soul and I need to pay up a bit. While Pact of Negation does get significantly better in Junk if you're running Heirarchs, I still don't recommend it anywhere in the 75
Im helping my buddy put this deck together. It'll end up being more value centered than combo in all likely hood. Ill post a list once we figure out the exact 75. What is your sideboard plan against the popular decks?
Hi, Im trying to build a more agresive version of the deck, because in the last tournaments(FNM,not big thing) I got screwed for good. Of course it depends on the pairings, but I lost against U tron, Burn(i couldnt draw any "kitchen"in the 2 games)and Twin. Probably bad luck drawing cards or the gods of magic where against me. Anyway, I´m trying this week with a more agresive version of the deck. I will like to ask about the mana base though.
As you see I dropped all the control part(inquisition, abrupt decay, etc...) to add more agresive creatures, keeping only the confidants, rinos and lingering souls flashback as black spalsh. Im considering changing some creatures for making space to scavenging ooze. No goyfs for now.
Do you think this could work?
Wich lands will you set aside for including ghost quarter or another anti-tron land?
Thank you for your advice.
TL;DR I dont know why people get so butt hurt when their deck isnt tier one according to the forum. No one is 'out to get' your deck. Discussion of decks still continue which subforum its in. To go about tiering in a way other than just using the available data just lets things become skewed in the view of whoever makes those choices.
I've had 2 Tasigur in my sideboard whenever I cut Bob out
I think you can get away with 1 maindeck, the chances of flipping it vs the value you get out of it are worth it. Maindeck batterskull or even Sword of Light and Shadow wouldnt be bad. LS solves the problem of dealing with lingering souls gumming up the board and card advantage you miss out on.
Tasigur is great; but hes not really SB material, the SB is better for more precise/matchup specific cards. Theres not really too many matchups that you'd want to side out bob and put in tasigur. The only matchups I take bob out for are burn, affinity, and sometimes a few of him against burn heavy delver decks.
This is probably what I'd run if I was running straight green black. There are some matches where you just cant afford to draw 2 coursers and tasigur can be similar. Haveing 2 tas in your opening hand can be crippling, and with more than 1 youre probably a little afraid to flip him to bob. To offset that I put some discard in the SB and moved the 2 finks maindeck.
Not that I'd definately goto 4 tec edge, but if you were to thats the manabase i'd use for it. 3 Tec Edge is probably the best, having the land destruction in your SB to back them up in some matchups is really really good, get those fulminator mages.
Have you tried out any number of Victim of Night over a disfigure or dismember? You can probably cut 1 discard or a courser for a singleton tasigur. Looks like a solid list though.
Is there a "best" abzan list right now? I see a lot of list with noble hierachs, or birds of paradise and doran and some list without mana dorks and dorans.
Some jund list playing now with outpost siege. Its time for phyrexian arena in abzan?
Why no bob and leave tasigur out of the list? card advantage wins games. and its only real bad against zoo and burn.
No, there is no 'best' abzan list. Just like there is no 'best' deck in modern. 1/2 of winning a tournament is correctly metagaming and knowing how to build your deck. When you're look at the decklists, make sure you also look at the other decks in the top 8 to help you figure out why that deck did well in that metagame.
Outpost Siege doesnt die to Abrupt Decay, which is the bigger reason its seeing play.
wanna go to my first modern event for month's and plan to play junk, so i check out what is currently played
vs what decks would you want thrun ?
i allways used to play him vs jund, but jund is barely played anymore, since people go junk. and vs junk i think sigarda is the better card
or am i wrong ?
You want Thrun against decks with counterspells and mass removal. You want Sigarda against wrathless fair decks.
Let's talk strategy. I'm often not sure how suicidal I should allow myself to be on turn 1.
It's G1, you don't know your opponent's deck, you're on the play. You mull to six and start with fetchland, Godless Shrine, Plains, Thoughtseize, Goyf, Liliana. When do you Thoughtseize?
In the current meta i play the godless shrine tapped and pass. Too likely to be burn and twin running around to goto 15 for a TS with that hand.
t2 is thoughtseize then play a land.
Its important to play the godless shrine first and not the fetchland. 1. they might put you on the wrong deck 2. Thoughtseize might reveal a blood moon so you'd want to be able to get a basic forest 3. you might draw a manland so you'd rather play that t2 then sac the verdant for a swamp t3 for lily.
Scooze is lifegain, and in most matchups it'll be the right amount of lifegain that you need.
no Path is *not* a drawback, no path is good. I love the decklist. Ive been feeling like rhino is too top heavy for the deck for a while now.
