It might be a bit too technical of a deck idea for you, but look into pox type decks. You could do a budget version for pretty cheap. Rips things out of his hand, destroys his resources, and starves him out of the game, all while you benefit.
If you want to go into other colors, I'm just gonna throw this card out there ALUREN. Again maybe a bit technical, but you can do crazy things with it. It's pretty available, and cheap. I could see some cool black/green shenanigans with that.
Lauren+enduring renewal+mogg fanatic is the most fun combo to set up in my infinite marath deck. There are lots of combos you can squeeze in there, really is a great general for it
I am liking it so far. The crucible/ghost quarter lock can shut down games. Myth is a house, not many people expect it, and main board enchantment hate isn't prevalent for me. Souls is great, sac fodder for crack the earth and smallpox, defense, and pressure. Its not uncommon to have 4 or 5 counters on it by turn 3, and can be a great mana sink for even more counters. Mana tithe is kinda jank, but is good out of the sideboard. Its unexpected, but isnt always effective. Might switch to some surgicals, and Kor Firewalker hasnt done much for me. Overall I like it, its a really fun deck.
Turn 1: Urborg > Inquisition/, Turn 2: Flagstones > Smallpox > fetch for sacred foundry is the most fun I have had in modern.
I am liking the bant idea, using Altar of the brood as the combo win con. haven't played standard in a while so I'm not up on the current best counters/ramp/creatures, but I think bant might be good.
Really sweet card. This could make a few really fun combo decks in standard, might actually find a home in modern as well, and is gonna be an EDH all star for years to come. I might actually play standard just for the combo potential.
I am really liking the look of this deck. I've been testing a bit and it plays much better to me than Loam pox, and is just brutal a lot of the time. I'm working up a list, I'll definitely be keeping up here.
It depends for me. It's usually either a choice between what colors I want, and deck theme. Commander to me is a casual format so I'm more concerned with how fun a deck is than how effective. For example, I have a [card]skeleton ship[\card] deck, I chose this commander for flavor (dangers of the high seas). My other main deck, [card]intet the dreamer[\card] I chose for colors. I felt rug dragons would be fun, and intet spits dragons like crazy!
It's really about what commanders are fun. Some I think are kinda blah, and some I think are tricky to exploit, so I stay away from those.
All that said, my (edit: Narset) deck is super nasty and can be very competitive, but I like doing things for free and taking all the turns, my opponents don't though.
Ok, so just modify the way you draft. That makes sense. I'm gonna get to work on it this weekend, start going through all my cards and roughing out a list.
So the cube format is very interesting to me, but as I understand it, it is for groups of 8 to draft. Rarely if ever will I be able to get 8 people together to draft, but 4 (and up to 6) can happen often enough.
Is a cube for 4+ people possible? Also how would I go about making such a list, as most how to articles are for 8 person cube?
Money is the easy option. Why barter when we can just hand each other rocks.
I'm a terrible idealist though, so lets not go back to bartering, and get rid of money anyways. Lets make everything free and power society with our faith in fellow humanity.
It'll work. Why wouldn't it?
It wouldn't work because there would be no incentive to participate. Not all people are altruistic, MANY would take advantage of that system. People assign perceived value to almost everything, skills and talents, ability to provide for this utopian free society would inherently assign value to those able to provide, thus giving them more power. It really wouldn't be much different than the current monetary system.
What skill, service, or goods do you have or have the ability to make for barter? Do you garden and hunt for food? Some things can be traded for or aquifer through self sustaining means, but a lot of things are so tied to global economic systems and corporate interest at this point that doing away with money in its entirety would lead to a massive collapse of local and global economies. Money is basically a piece of paper (or these days an electronic record) of an exchange you made with someone else for something of value. It really diversifies the ammount of value you can generate.
If for example, you were a really good welder you would have a tough time trading that skill for the wide variety of consumables and services you have access to by trading your welding for a piece of paper that you can take anywhere and spend. The local cattle farmer might not need any welding, so you get no beef or dairy. Trading for items of value that can be traded again has always existed. Gold, spices, textiles, heck even stone knives if you go back far enough have all acted as currency at one point or another, just not money like we are used to.
Here is my list currently. I feel like Sorin, Solemn Visitor is great in this deck. The lifelink to all creatures is fantastic in the mid game. I still like the 2 remand and 2 spell snare are the right cards for me as well. I have been doing pretty well in testing. I like that this deck can have an explosive turn 4 with a good opening hand, and even be controlling enough to work through a bad start. The side board is a little rough, but has been ok so far. No unwinnable matchups so far, which is nice, but some are definitely rough for me (looking at you cruel control, I hate playing that deck).
P.S. I keep liking Lingering souls more and more. That card is really good.
Just my opinion but pack rat seems anti-synergistic with mentor to me. You don't want to be discarding your spells that trigger mentor and his tokens to make rats. Personally I want the tokens and prowess triggers.
As for mana tithe, this deck plays blue. Mana tithe doesn't do anything better than a number of blue counters do, or black disruption/removal does.
That said, I do believe anything is worth a try, but these options are outclassed by lots of other cards.
On a side note, I have come around to lingering souls after playing it a lot more. I was wrong, I AM a lingering souls kind of guy!
