I am just starting to build my first cube with limited amounts of cash and cards like these will allow me to build a cube with fun quirky effects without breaking the bank on some of the crazy expensive cards.
I am not completely sold on Bloodghast, in testing he can get the beats in but he seems extremely mediocre when playing from behind. I would love to play Dark Confidant but I am new to modern and am just getting started on building up my modern collection. Only other deck that I have fully built is RGTron.
As far as Magmatic Insight goes I found that alot of times it just screwed me over, 80% of the time it was amazing but I just feel that in many situations that land in hand can be pretty important. I have given some thought to Darkblast but I just have two copies in my sideboard which is still under construction.
My reasoning behind Guttural Response is just a meta call, in my meta it is 90% blue players playing decks that a resolved Seismic Assault just wins the game.
I saw a deck that would play root maze then play a bunch of taplands like the theros scrylands to break the symmetry and spreading seas effects to ruin the opponents mana fixing.
So I did a bunch of playtesting yesterday against alot of the prevelent decks atm (ie. Abzan Midrange, Mardu Midrange, Jeskai Tempo) and my god i do not regret my purchase of my U/W list.
In playtesting I found that Last Breath could be a bit awkward as alot of the popular creatures atm dodge the 2 or less power. Devouring Light was AMAZING, every time against my opponent and I was on the draw I would have 1ww and pass turn and he would see the double white and jam Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker and +1 him and I would just exile him.
As far as maindeck counterspells I have been running 4x Dissolve, 2x Disdainful Stroke, and 1x Nullify and I have to agree that Nullify was never a dead card in my hand.
I also tried a split of Divination vs. Font of Fortunes and I was extremely pleased with how the font performed.
I think that Kheru Lich Lord is just going to be too expensive for a random payoff, alot of the creatures in this deck don't give a decent value regardless of what you get. I would much rather paying one more black for a Whip of Erebos activation on Sidisi, Blood Tyrant after draw step.

2 Molten Vortex

2 Raven's Crime
2 Molten Vortex
3 Seismic Assault

I'm also just not a huge fan of paying on upkeep.
