The End of an Era

I enjoyed this one much more. Slimefoot is fun.

Myvonly question is this: Karn is on the ship, yet the Weatherlight likes Jhoira better? How long was she a captain when they made the ship? I remember it irked me when I read the novel because she becomes captain 5 lines before the end of the book and when we see the Weathelight again its during Rath and Storm. Karn was on the ship for years. The ship actually talked to him. They are both parts of the Legacy. What gives?

Another thing I saw someone point out on reddit. Chandra has been on Dominaria a few days.

Jace stayed on Ixalan around 2 months... How does that work?

Story is up... And its bad.

Is it really too much to ask for writers to read the relevant bits of the lore?

Its Sylex, not Cylix. Not an expert on geography, how close where Argoth and Yavimaya? Should that even be there? Its been more than 4000 years and it took Karn's bots only a few days to dig it out?

Jace is back and sounds more robot than Karn. All the character progression he did in Ixalan, gone out of rhe window. And how does he know about Ajani? Unless he refers to the regroup that already happened and nobody bothered to inform him that already happened.

Jace: Bolas is making a trap, here's my plan....

    We never hear it. Really?

I dont think Wells bothered to read the Ixalan epilogue. Unless she did and someone made drastic changes to it afterwards.

The Mana Rig Jhoira? That is how you got Teferi's spark? That explains nothing.

With this being said, the "tier list" we were discussing was about sheer magical power, and I maintain that, when it comes to sheer magical power, Tezzeret ranks fairly low, certainly not at the top of the color blue. He himself stated this to be the truth, and while I agree that his mind is what makes him dangerous, now the discussion wasn't about that.

In that case (raw Power) I'd go with Narset as first and Ral being a close second for Blue.

I agree with Autumn, Jace is in no way the second best telepath. That's Vraska's opinion, not a fact. Bolas and Ugin have both messed with his mind without him realising it. Ashiok is an enigma. I wouldnt put Jace in the top three to be honest.

Thassa wiped the floor with Kiora.

Ral seemed pretty strong in the Secretist actually. He was like a more volatile and egotistical version of Chandra to the point he was actively malicious. He countered Jace's telepathy and the latter had to use illusions to escape.

About Gideon: He is strong. Hixus has said that he is the strongest hieromancer he's ever seen. The thing is, Gideon doesnt use his magic, besides his force field.

    Colorwise I'd go with:
    White - Elspeth. Easy.
Blue - Narset or Tezzeret. We know Narset is strong. She became the youngest master ever in the Ojutai and blasted Taigam like he was nothing. Tezzeret held his own againt the gatewatch in Kaladesh. His arm makes up for his lack of talent in magic, but really its his mind that makes him dangerous. The problem is that he, like many other characters (See Sorin) suffer from a lack of good writter to do them justice.
Black - I dont think we have a neowalker that really screams black? Someone already mentioned Ashiok.
Red - Sarkhan. Chandra just burns things. This guy can do this and so much more.
Green - I'd go with Garruk. Nissa's power fluctuates way too much.

Spark or not, Teferi looks powerful enough to take on all of the gatewatch together. Messing with time is just too strong.

I liked him, and Niambi, but I didnt like the puzzle. It felt like filler and there are a few issues with the plot.

What is it that Urza made that would allow Teferi to being Zalfir back? A massive powerstone? He cant have made it after Zalfir was phased out. There was no time. He couldnt have made it before because Teferi took him by surprise when he phased Zalfir out. Also the puzzle was designed for Teferi? Again what's in there? And spirits? Are you telling me that someone of Teferi's caliber doesnt have the power/brains to search the place for any summonings that might be lurking but Lily can just see them?

So Lyra was one of the original angels that came from Serra's realm. Still no idea how she relates to Reya.

Tiana says that Serra was lost when she healed Benalia. As far as I know such a thing never happened. Serra fled her realm and went to Ulgrotha and then to Dominaria and eventually died from a stab wound by a thief planeswalker.

Is there anyone else who can't access today's story. It keeps telling me that I'm not authorized.

    Edit: it's allowing me now.

Had same issue with Chrome, used another browser and its working now.

This set looks insane. Love 99% of it.

My main is gripe so far is Jodah. Tazri actually did something other than just provide the colours. Meh.

Correct me if I am wrong but the document that wizards released js not the entire set right?

There's no simic legend that I've seen and we are also missing Jossu.

What do you think sagas being a thing means flavor-wise? Do they just represent "retellings" of Dominaria's history? That'd be a bit strange since they have real game effects. But time rifts are gone, right? So how do they work?

Gameplay and flavour do not overlap 100%. The sagas is Wizards hitting the nostalgia mark with Dominaria. An entire storyline condesed into card form.

However if you need somwthing more than that, Tamiyo's magic can bring stories to life so there is precedent.

And this made things inherently problematic in terms of making each faction equally sympathetic to the storytellers.
Fixing that for you. The audience that has a right to be ofended aren't, the Legion is the most popular faction in Mexico.
We have a constant and close relationship with our mesoamerican past, the Sun Empire is nothing we haven't seen before (and it's treated with the same infantilizing "noble savages" crap as always). But we can never show any pride for the other half of our heritage least west-coast left-leaning Americans lose their ***** like first graders who heard soomeone curse for the first time.

Mexicans are descendants of conquistadors and the Aztec empire were the villains of the story, that's why 40-60k native american warriors sided with Cortez.

The people upset and surprised at the emperor's disposition for violent expansionism should read some mesoamerican history because that's the most accurate depiction of Aztec nobility in media to this date. It just missed a lot of religious and racist justifications for why eating other people's hearts is ok.
Exactly. Thank you. I'm pretty tired of the European history shaming. History just is what it is. At least they did Elenda right.

Anyhow, I like that the ending demonstrates that anyone with power can become corrupt. As soon as the emperor was put in a favorable position, he became the enemy. And when Elenda appeared, the Vampires are the ones who show the promise of changing for the better. So the tides turn. It's not about the culture or race, it's all about integrity. The Sun Empire's leader lacks it. Elenda on the other hand is a deity worthy of reverence and embodies honor. So we can see the impact of a leader's integrity on the whole of their respective empires now, and I quite admire that contrast and tension for the return. Hope the Vampires make it out on top. They're definitely my favorite.

To me, Elenda's actions make no sense. She decides she needs to guard the immortal sun so somehow she becomes a vampire. Then she spreads it to the nobility, builds a cult with her at the centre all in order to teach them "humility". Because making powerhungry monsters like Vona immortal is really humbling. And then she takes off and leaves them. Then she finds the sun... And goes to sleep for a thousand years. Azor at least had the decency to stay awake while guarding the sun.

She wakes up and sees the sun is gone. "Oh well I might as well go back to Torezon".

Sadly for me she is another Ixalan character that was wasted utterly.

So, I figured maybe we can use this thread for future new players with the same question? Post your likes, dislikes...what you want and don't want to experience in game and maybe favorite colors...then we can help guide people to the right choice?

Anyhow—I have been thinking of using Kess, Inalla (I just bought the precon deck) or Locust God. I play Baral casually with my friends when we 1v1 as I am naturally a spellslinger at heart. Grixis are my favorite colors btw. Any thoughts from you seasoned EDH players?

I think Kess and the Locust God might be the way to go if you like spellslingers. Kess is way more open ended and in the right colours so personally I would go with her. The Locust God is more durable and he plays similarly to Niv Mizzet. Wheels, draw spells and more draw. It might be fun at first but its so eady to break that I think it will become boring after a while.

  • posted a message on DOMINARIA - Which Legendary creatures are you hoping for?
The ones I want rhe most are Karn and Jaya. Maybe a Jodah too but thats because I've never read his books and I want the guy who beat Mairail to get a card.

I want a UW Teferi. He's probably gonna be a walker seeing he gets his own deck and all. As long as Karn or Jaya dont sacrifice their own sparks to mend his then I'm fine with that. More Azorius walkers are always a good thing.

Jhoira is probably gonna be the UR artificer she should have been from the get go and everyone has been asking for. If Wizards drops the ball again here everyone is gonna go crazy. I personally dont care for her but its good to see an Izzet that pushes for something other than spellslinger.

Hope we get Squee and Multani. Also hoping that Belzenlock is Rakdos and not just monoblack.

All the other Dominarian legends we know should be long dead to be honest. The Weatherlight story was like 300 years ago right? S
Never cared much for Onslaught legends (the story just went crazy after a point) with the exception of Laquatous, Ixidor and Chainer and they are all dead sadly.

I dont think this will happen. Wizards is not in control of the Commander format so they are not able to make that desicion.

No they are not in control, but they know the people who are and can put pressure on, do you think the Silver Boardered Winter was the Rules Committee Idea?

You mean the period where Unstable cards where allowed? Yes I think it was. Because its their format. I dont think Wizards pushed them to allow Unstable cards temporarily.
