Niallplaysmagic posted a message on MaverickDidn't realize there was an actual maverick thread! I posted this in the GW value town thread but that one is dead. I took the deck to a 3-0 modern Monday earlier this week and did a short write-up. Deck feels REALLY good. I played Todd Stevens' most recent main deck with a cobbled together sideboard based on what I had available. Below is the list -Posted in: Deck Creation (Modern)
Match notes and sideboards - I don't take very good notes and don't have a great memory of every single turn (I have no idea how some of you have such detailed tournament reports) but I always remember how I sideboarded so I'll just try to give you the gist.
Match 1 - Lantern Control - 2-0
I feel pretty favored against lantern normally as we have SO much control over the top of our library and that proved to be the case in these games.
Game 1 - Had a turn 2 Knight that he couldn't answer at all and it was far too hard for him to control my draw step and he couldn't find a bridge. Easy and quick win.
Sideboard:
Out
4 Path - no targets
3 Voice of Resurgence - just a grizzly bear and that's definitely not where you want to be.
In
2 Engineered Explosives
1 Kataki
1 Reclamation Sage
1 Shalai
2 Stony Silence
Game 2 - This was more of the same if not better as I got to just remove all of my dead stuff. Ended up delivering most of my beats via a BOP under a bridge with double Hierarch triggers. He whirred for a spellbomb to kill one of the Hierarch's which dropped my clock to give him time to find outs. I ended up with 2 knights in play and in one upkeep saw 8 different cards on top of my deck before I drew. Knight is stupid. Finally found a Kataki which basically wrathed his board and that was the game.
Match 2 - Jeskai Control - 2-0
Jeskai can be a tough matchup if they see enough removal early and can stabilize at a high enough life total. Our general gameplan here is to try and grind with them while constantly pressuring their basics. Most Jeskai players run 3/4ish basics - generally 2 islands and a plains but some will run a third island or 1 mountain.
Game 1 - Did exactly what I was looking to do in that he naturally drew his basics and I got to a point where I could ghost quarter aggressively. A Ramunap sealed his fate with GQ's every turn while he tried to deal with some pesky Voices.
Sideboard:
Out
4 Path
4 Birds of Paradise - dorks aren't really where you want to be against a super removal heavy deck - you want to insulate yourself from easy removal targets and give yourself better late game topdecks
In
1 Aven Mindcensor
1 Choke
1 Eidolon of Rhetoric - 4 power toughness creatures come in against Jeskai as only path cleanly deals with them. The other text isn't terribly relevant but it does turn off Snapcaster, so that's nice.
1 Engineered Explosives - a hedge against them bringing in something like Rest in Peace
1 Nissa, Vastwood Seer
1 Reclamation Sage - also a hedge against RIP
1 Shalai
1 Sigarda
Game 2 - Mulled to 6 and snap kept a hand with a voice, choke, and Coco. Drew a Noble and played it turn one - into voice (not playing into mana leak), end of his fourth turn I played Coco into Cryptic mana and he took the bait and I slammed Choke on my turn keeping him completely tapped out. Voice was a slow clock and he got some more lands up while I built out my board and the game ended when I 'countered' a wrath with Avacyn.
Match 3 - Jund - 2-1
Jund games are the grindiest of the grindy games. Your success comes down to how able you are to hold off aggression while ghost quartering them out of the game as they don't run many basics.
Game 1 - I got relatively lucky and found a constant stream of huge knights that he couldn't deal with all in a row and I got a Scavenging Ooze going early which helped clean up Goyfs.
Sideboard:
General idea - similar to that of Jeskai. Dorks are not where you want to be. Give yourself better top decks and the more you can inoculate yourself against bolt, the better. Our board is pretty good against Jund so I felt pretty good going into the sideboard games.
Out
4 Birds of Paradise
3 Noble Hierarch
In
1 Aven Mindcensor
1 Eidolon of Rhetoric
2 Engineered Explosives
1 Nissa
1 Shalai
1 Sigarda
Game 2 - I thought I kept a fairly good hand with some voices, but one ate an inquisition and he followed it up with a Bob that went ham, and a Scavenging Ooze that ended up with 10 counters on it and my graveyard completely empty. Despite my best efforts I never found a path.
Game 3 - Kept a super shaky 6 - 2 lands (fetch and ghost quarter) with a my only real playables being a courser and EE and scryed another courser to the bottom. First draw step was another courser. He dropped a goyf with only lands in the yard. I find a land and drop Courser. I don't block his goyf when he swings in because I saw he had the bolt (he did). Got the second courser up and passed. Blocked his two goyfs (which were 2/3s) and he didn't have anything to punish me and played a bob in his second main. Hit my 4th land drop into EE on 2, popped, swing. He found a Liliana the Last Hope and we start to grind out a little bit, with him finding another pesky Scooze that got big enough to be a threat. He couldn't put pressure on though and I blew him out with Avacyn negating a push on a late Excavator. Feels good.
So yeah, I love this deck. You have so many options, you have so many different ways to attack the format and you have outs to almost everything.
And that was that. Felt good. On the modernmagic forum there were some arguments about my sideboarding decisions. At the time everything felt good, but now I'm not so sure. Thoughts?
This deck feels SO much better than it's following would suggest. Are people just not interested in the playstyle? -

Chantu9Y posted a message on Death And TaxesHey everyone! I've been a follower of the thread and have enjoyed watching the streams @deathandcatmix. I think you all have done a great job promoting the deck and having meaningful, constructive discussions here on the thread. I've finally caved in and purchased the deck for myself on MTGO and have really enjoyed playing it so far. I feel like the deck is quite strong and match ups never feel unwinnable (I literally just beat a Tron opponent off a mull to four with Arbiter, Ghost quarter, vial, and path in hand. Feelsgood). Very interested in seeing what this deck can do and how it continues to evolve with the current meta. Right now I'm running deathandcatmix's list on the link:Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
Hopefully I can contribute to the thread and look forward to reading more from you all! Keep up the great work! -

dntScoundrel posted a message on Death And TaxesFirst time posting, been lurking for a while.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
Last two Mondays I have brought this build to my LGS.
I've gone 1-3 both times, but it has felt like 3-1.
First time I faced "gruul copter" (0-2), Pillow Fort (2-0), UW mill (1-2) and Red Affinity (1-2).
Last night I faced ETron (2-1), ETron (0-2), Affinity (1-2) and Red Affinity (1-2, same player as last time).
Eldrazi Displacer is a power house. I seriously don't know whether I prefer Displacer or Copter.
The first night I didn't play any Displacers to have room for MB Revoker and Mindcensor, (which after last night I realised was a mistake) and since I faced three "non-meta decks" I had no idea what to do (though winning over Pillow Fort by flickering a Phyrexian Unlife when he is at 0 life was very funny).
Small report:Last night were all tight and close games. First ETron was fairly easy. He's an inexperienced player that I have played against before. Arbiter turn two both winning games and GQ/Tec turn three and four.
Second ETron was also a fairly inexperienced player but a Chalice on 1 turn two both games made it hard for me (since I started both games with at least two one drops). I won game one against affinity, mulligan to five games two and three and still kept him on edge thanks to Displacer shenanigans,no hate cards in sight except for O-ring and Blessed Alliance.
It was basically the same thing against Red Affinity.
After last night I removed one MB Splicer to make room for a fourth Displacer, and I am seriously considering removing one Arbiter for another land, probably Field of Ruin, because that’s the reason I had to mulligan, not enough lands.
I am also in a very creature heavy meta (affinity, humans, merfolk, elves/combo elves) and I have thought about switching one Resto Angel for a Linvala, Keeper of Silence. Has anybody thought of that? Or should I just jam her in my sideboard?

Rolfgang posted a message on Death And TaxesPosted in: Aggro & TempoQuote from johnkorean »Paging Dr. Catmix...
I remember a while back you were streaming a DnT version running Tocatli Honor Guard and eschewing the traditional ETB plan. What were the results of your experiment? I keep finding myself wanting to build a Wisp-less Vryn Wingmare heavy version of Taxes, but I don't know the meta well enough to have any idea whether losses would be because the deck is terrible or just that I'm terrible.
Also, are we anticipating UG Merfolk to see a significant uptick post-Rivals? My heart says no, but my head says I might need to play a different deck until the Merfolk wave subsides. Thoughts?
That was a Mono White Hatebears-build and if memory serves correctly, it ended up 3 - 1. The video is on Catmix's YT Channel. -

remotefacade posted a message on Death And TaxesHi taxers. Long time lurker, first time poster. I've had a little more time to play in paper lately, so I thought I'd introduce myself and share a tournament report. I've been on a monowhite build for the past six months, and I've been enjoying it greatly.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
I want to thank @deathandcatmix, @SpiderSpace, @CharonsObol and the other D&T luminaries on this thread. You guys are great.
On with the tournament report...here is the list I played at FNM tonight:
Round 1 vs UR storm on the play
Game 1 - WIN- I opened vial into arbiter into GQ. I was able to use flickerwisp shenanigans to keep his electromancer exiled during his turn. Clock was slow, but managed to get there.
IN: Everything but the revokers and the relic-warders.
OUT: All the non-disruptive creatures: thraben inspector, blade splicers, etc.
Game 2 - LOSS - I kept a hand with 2 colorless lands, vial, path, sunlance, and some 2/3 drops. Unfortunately I was not able to draw a plains and was overrun with goblins.
Game 3 - WIN - Slow clock, but a lot of hate. Vial, cage, RiP, eidolon. He was not able to answer eidolon and I got there.
Round 2 vs ??? on the draw
This guy is normally on lantern control, he was on something different tonight that I was unable to identify game one.
Game 1 - WIN - Opponent floods out pretty badly and I beat him down with fliers. I see green and white lands, some wooded foothills, multiple sakura-tribe elders and renegade ralliers used to ramp. I put him on naya titanshift or some GW value town thing.
I don't sideboard because I don't really know what he's doing.
Game 2 - LOSS - I see a little more of opponent's deck. He is on abzan colors. I see collected company and a saffi eriksdotter, so I'm watching out for a combo there when opponent goes curse of misfortunes into overwhelming splendor. I am very surprised and I scoop soon after.
IN: 4 relic warder, grafdigger's cage, relic, RiP
OUT: 4 blade splicer, 3 thraben inspector - he has a lot of stuff clogging up the ground so my goal game three is to beat him down with flyers while not getting cursed or combo'd.
Game 3 - WIN - I got cage out and a bunch of flyers. I am prepared with relic warder when he goes for the curse.
Round 3 vs sultai control on the play
This guy is usually on some kind of GBx strategy. I find out he is on sultai today.
Game 1 - LOSS - I keep a great hand of 2 land, vial, thalia, splicer, path, resto. Opp opens on creeping tar pit, then goes Jace, Vryn's Prodigy into removal + thoughtseize into Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver into damnation. I can't keep up with the planewalkers and scoop it up. In retrospect, I think my mistake this game was not pathing jace before it flipped.
IN: 2 revoker, relic, RiP
OUT: 2 path, 1 thalia HC, 1 mindcensor
I'm still not sure if shaving the paths was correct or not.
Game 2 - LOSS - This is a grindy game, but he draws gas and I draw 3 plains. Oh well.
Round 4 vs Affinity on the play
I feel bad because opponent is a nice guy and mulls to 5 both games.
Game 1 - WIN - This is a weird game, because despite starting on 5 cards opponent has a steel overseer that I am unable to answer and all the crappy robots are getting scary. I draw 3 wisps and a resto this game, so I am able to keep it together by knocking counters off his guys and racing in the air.
IN: Everything but the graveyard hate and the eidolon.
OUT: 4 thraben inspector, 4 arbiter, 1 Thalia HC, 2 Thalia
Game 2 - WIN - I have 2 land, vial, 2 relic warder, splicer, path in my opener. Opponent mulls to 5 and wasn't able to get anything going.
Thoughts on this build
Jury is still out on field of ruin vs tec edge. There is a lot of three color midrange and not a lot of two color control in my meta, so field is probably better in this context.
I've been thinking about trying to find room for a couple selfless spirits and/or a couple eldrazi displacers in the 75. Flyers are how I win and board wipes are how I lose, so may go +2 SS and -1 Thalia HC -1 mindcensor next week.
I've been really happy with this sideboard, not considering any changes there for the time being.
Anyways, thanks for reading. Cheers! -

I get really frustrated with things as simple as not knowing how to sideboard against decks and finding it hard to find on youtube or in articles for other decks, and you guys have all that info available.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
Definitely wish every major deck had someone like you guys and Nikachu that has so many good resources.

xotug posted a message on Death And TaxesI'm at home after the main event the Team Trios GP Madrid. Pretty happy with the teamwork and the performance of the deck. We started with a 3-1, we finished with a 3-3 and drop. My personal record has been 8-4.Posted in: Aggro & Tempo
Here's the list:
Round 1 vs Scapeshift (2-0):
- Match 1: Pretty standard match with nothings interesting to said. Hit him with my creatures until death.
- Match 2: Tight game that my rival lost because he was greedy or he didn't know so well his deck. Final situation:
Me with Kitchen and Copter, him with nine lands and a Valakut. He cast Scapeshif, sacrifice every land except Valakut and ask if I concede, my partner, who also plays Valakut said no way because he counted and realized that he hadn't had enough mountains to kill me (if he had sacrificed only five lands, I was done). He resolved Scapeshift and searched 4 mountains, 2 Valakut and 3 fetches so no triggers to me. He play a stomping and shot me for 9 to the head. So, I played Thraben, crew Copter and attack with it and Finks leave him to 3. He played Courser of Kruphix and, in response, I activated Vial and put Big Thalia in play so Couser entered tapped and he conceded.
Round 2 vs Humans (1-1)
- Match 1: Slow start for both and I win through flyers, pathing every one of his Mantis.
- Match 2: Mull to 5. I could have recovered but he played a Big Thalia in T2 and all my blockers entered tapped.
No Match 3 because both my partners lose so the Round finished right there.
Round 3 vs Storm (2-0):
- Match 1: Classic match with a peak point when he played a Gifts, paid the Arbiter tax but the sweet sweet trick of flickering the arbiter with Resto in order to forced him to pay 2 more made useless his Gifts.
- Match 2: Match that a Ratchet Bomb was the goblin police and an Eidolon closed.
Round 4 vs Ad Nauseam (2-0):
This Round is an example of what happens when this deck works flawlessly.
- Match 1: Typical hand that a taxes player keeps on the play (I know he was playing Ad Nauseam because he dropped a Lotus Bloom while shuffling): Quarter, Vial, Arbiter, Flicker and other 3 (none of them was a land.
T1: Quarter, Vial
OP T1: Fastland, Serum
T2: Draw Vial, play vial.
OP T2: Mana, Sleight
T3: Draw quarter, play quarter, vial to arbiter, double GQ and rival came back to the Stone Age. Sweeeeet. Both of us hadn't a land but I had two activate vials. XDD
- Match 2 initial hand: 2 Plains, Tectonic, Thalia, Revoker, Flicker and Copter.
OP T1: Mana, Lotus Bloom. So I thought: Well, now I know the Revoker target. XDDD
T1: Plains, go
OP T2: Mana, cantrip.
T2: Plains, Thalia.
OP T3: Mana, go
T3: Mana, revoker to Bloom.
OP T4: Bloom comes into play, he paid 1 due to Thalia, go.
T4: Big Thalia
OP T5: Land, Prism with 3 counters
T5: Flicker to Prism
After that hit after hit, he survived the first lethal hit thanks to Angel's grace, played No-life but another Flicker takes the enchantment out and go for the kill.
Round 5 vs Affinity (1-2)
- Match 1: I put the Air Force in play and crush him through the skies.
- Match 2: T1 Skirge into T2 equipped Cranial. Hit for 8 in T2, 12 in T3. Affinity is his purest essence.
- Match 3: I survived a T2 Ghirapur into T3 Whipflare thanks to a Burrenton and draw a Revoker to bite the Ghirapur. Everything went fine until I made a ginormous mistake: I attacked with the Revoker when he had a blocker that can kill it. Stupid moron myself. After that, I left him at 3 and I draw a Resto that arrived at the end of his turn, I went to the final hit but he had drawn his single dispatch and exile it. Damm.
Without that mistake I'm sure I have the victory and the 4-1 for our team. Arggggg.
Round 6 vs ETron.(0-1)
- Match 1: No much commented. Ballista into Thought-Knot, into Smasher, into Karn, into Endbringer, into second Smasher. That's some curve.
No match 2. My partners lost their games.
Thanks a lot to deathandcatmix for his counseling the night before and he is so damm true when he says that Copter are the REAL DEAL.
That's all folks. Please bury me with questions or doubts.

Ive been made aware of certain rules that are required to maintain the primer and forum here on mtgsalvation. I wasn’t aware and honestly, with adapting to parenthood, Ive slipped on my responsibilities here. I plan on letting go of the other forums on manage on this site and plan to exclusively put efforts in for you all here.
Just one quick question? What do you guys want to see forum the primer update and how would you like me to make contributions? PM if it’s something in great detail.

What is Death And Taxes?
“Death & Taxes (D&T) is a deck based loosely on the Legacy deck by the same name. It is a white based deck (originally strictly mono-white) that plays small creatures who provide some element of control on the battlefield. At its most basic form, the general idea is to out tempo the opponent through virtual card advantage, evasive/efficient beats, and creating dead cards in their hand utilizing taxes and an aggressive land destruction plan. Keep in mind this deck is a meta deck at heart, its power stems from that, not the intrinsic power of the cards themselves.”- Sheepz
Death And Taxes has continued to follow the core values that Sheepz addressed but has also begun to evolve in the Modern format. With the latest printings, Death And Taxes has grown to incorporate sub themes and color variations that were not previously supported. In example, during "Eldrazi Winter", we found ourselves with a new build titled, “Eldrazi And Taxes” taking the format by surprise. Eldrazi and Taxes took advantage of the powerhouse/aggressive Eldrazi printings and has continued to maintain promising performances and results.
(To continue educating yourself on the archetype, history, understanding DnT vs. Hatebears, key cards, and best practices, read the previous Death And Taxes' Primer v.2).
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
Which variations have the most success?
As it currently stands, there are multiple list that could claim to be the "correct" build. Just like in Legacy, Death And Taxes has multiple builds that are performing well and potentially answer different areas of the meta game. With Modern having nearly fifteen different archetypes performing at any given moment, it makes sense that various versions of Death And Taxes would blossom from those resulting metas.
1st variant:
Eldrazi And Taxes
Example list below is Joseph Freeman’s 9th place finish at the SCG Modern Dallas Open.
4 Caves of Koilos
4 Eldrazi Temple
4 Ghost Quarter
4 Godless Shrine
3 Plains
3 Shambling Vent
1 Swamp
CREATURES
2 Blade Splicer
4 Eldrazi Displacer
4 Flickerwisp
4 Leonin Arbiter
1 Reality Smasher
3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4 Thought-Knot Seer
4 Tidehollow Sculler
3 Wasteland Strangler
4 Path to Exile
OTHER SPELLS
4 Æther Vial
1 Anguished Unmaking
2 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar
2 Grafdigger's Cage
1 Kataki, War's Wage
2 Kor Firewalker
1 Pithing Needle
2 Rest in Peace
2 Stony Silence
1 Timely Reinforcements
1 Zealous Persecution
Currently the most popular (and most played) variant is Eldrazi And Taxes. This deck makes use of fast mana via Eldrazi Temple and its corresponding creatures: Eldrazi Displacer, Wasteland Strangler, Thought-Knot Seer, and Reality Smasher. Previously, Death And Taxes' variant decks struggled with having minuscule creatures, lack of hand disruption, and space for additional removal spells. Having access to these Eldrazi creatures fixes those issues that Death And Taxes innately had before while also fitting into the decks plan of deploying threats with disruptive elements. Combining all this with cards like Flickerwisp and Tidehollow Sculler makes it no surprise that the deck continues to perform well.
2nd variant:
G/W Death And Taxes
Example list below is SpiderSpace’s 5-0 finish on Magic Online: Modern Constructed League.
1 Eiganjo Castle
1 Forest
1 Gavony Township
4 Ghost Quarter
2 Horizon Canopy
2 Mutavault
2 Plains
4 Razorverge Thicket
1 Tectonic Edge
4 Temple Garden
CREATURES
2 Aven Mindcensor
3 Blade Splicer
1 Eldrazi Displacer
2 Eternal Witness
4 Flickerwisp
4 Leonin Arbiter
4 Noble Hierarch
1 Qasali Pridemage
2 Restoration Angel
2 Scavenging Ooze
3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
2 Collected Company
4 Path to Exile
OTHER SPELLS
4 Æther Vial
2 Engineered Explosives
2 Gaddock Teeg
1 Hallow
1 Kataki, War's Wage
2 Mirran Crusader
1 Rest in Peace
2 Spellskite
2 Stony Silence
2 Surgical Extraction
Not to be confused with Hatebears, GW Death And Taxes is another successful variant. While not as popular as sister variant, Eldrazi And Taxes, this deck is very powerful and more streamlined. GW Death And Taxes mimics much of the curve from Legacy but has a mana proficient one drop in the name of Noble Hierarch. Green gives the deck access to mana acceleration, exalted triggers, and tempo advantage via Collected Company & Eternal Witness. Also, green has been known to have phenomenal sideboard options as well. You may not have access to very much hand disruption but with such a clear focus on disruptive creatures and card advantage, your opponent most likely does not have the time to deploy game-breaking threats.
3rd variant:
Mono-White Death And Taxes
Example list below is muckymuck_dc5’s 5-0 finish on Magic Online: Modern Constructed League.
1 Eiganjo Castle
2 Flagstones of Trokair
4 Ghost Quarter
9 Plains
2 Sea Gate Wreckage
4 Tectonic Edge
CREATURES
2 Aven Mindcensor
2 Brimaz, King of Oreskos
2 Dryad Militant
4 Flickerwisp
4 Leonin Arbiter
3 Mirran Crusader
2 Serra Avenger
2 Spellskite
4 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4 Thought-Knot Seer
4 Path to Exile
OTHER SPELLS
1 Sword of Fire and Ice
4 Æther Vial
3 Burrenton Forge-Tender
2 Celestial Purge
1 Engineered Explosives
1 Fiend Hunter
1 Ratchet Bomb
2 Rest in Peace
2 Stony Silence
3 Sunlance
This build is commonly the starting point for most people entering the archetype. It is often returned to for its focused mana, streamlined creatures, and overall reliability. There are many pilots who will return to this deck to identify where their variant has deviated too far from the original in order to pull the major focus back in. Mono-White is also the deck able to take full advantage of the colorless mana resources. The deck does so by utilizing play sets of Tectonic Edge and Ghost Quarter. Some builds will then use the free slots to have access to more colorless lands such as: Sea Gate Wreckage, Mutavault, and/or Blinkmoth Nexus.
4th variant:
Red, Blue and Other Unconventional Death And Taxes
There are other versions which are piloted to success but are not represented nearly enough in order to give proper data or recommendations for currently. In the near future, it is very possible that red and blue builds find the required resources to become a major player in the format.
Variants In The Current Meta (Winter 2017):
Modern has continuously had meta shifts since early 2016. Death And Taxes has received scatterings of playables such as: Thalia, Heretic Cathar, Ramunap Excavator and Gideon of the Trials. However, it's the increasing power level of cards printed for other decks the seemingly positioned Death And Taxes to Tier 1 & 2 over the last year. Other decks increase in power but become more linear. This has made the match ups for Mono-White & Eldrazi And Taxes more favorable than they were in previous iterations.
With that being said, currently the best variations of Death And Taxes break down as such:
-------------------------------------------------------
1st Variation - Mono-White Death And Taxes: This list has the smoothest mana and most efficient threats per CMC. It also allows for the most utilization in land destruction lands due to its effortless use of white mana.
MATTYGUY13's Mono-White Death And Taxes list
-------------------------------------------------------
2nd Variation - Eldrazi And Taxes: Most E&T players have proven that skill can overcome deck list's "shortcomings". Many argue whether this list has the appropriate mana base to be competitive but the archetype has constantly performed and thus is still a fan favorite for mages like: Penips, MiguelCaster & KPonce! It has since fallen from the most played version due to the increase of Mono-White but together helps keep the archetype regarded in the upper Tiers of the Modern format.
MIGUELCASTER's Eldrazi And Taxes list
-------------------------------------------------------
3rd Variation - G/W Death And Taxes: This version has become less and less popular. Occasionally, some lists will show up (often a microsplash) but the deck is still looking for additional tools if its going to be widely viewed as top tier by many Death And Taxes enthusiasts.
SPIDERSPACE's GW Death And Taxes list
-------------------------------------------------------
Variants In The Current Meta (Summer 2019):
Modern has gone through a wild ride since 2018! What started off as an expected midrange format, it quickly evolved with success of the Humans deck, Storm (and other combo) strategies and the eventual unbannings of Jace, the Mind Sculptor & Bloodbraid Elf. Many players thought this would lead to a more stabilized and slower format. In actuality, this increased the amount of pressure that aggro decks would apply and made combo decks focus on being less interactive. Modern officially became a hyper aggressive format. As the moniker goes, Death And Taxes continues to find its way. Settling back down into lower Tier 2 status due to players bing split on consensus of builds, splashing secondary colors are currently the only thing consistant in most DNT lists.
Eldrazi Taxes and Death & Staxes have been more popular than ever but this is not to say Mono-White and Red-White variants are completely absent. Normally, this section would break down the most popular variations but there is no major consensus at this time. There is a beacon of hope for consistency coming up in Magic’s Core 2019 set. Cards like Militia Bugler and Remorseful Cleric have the potential to make the baseline strategy come full circle. And if not, Core 2019 seems to bring a lot of tools to potential splash builds as well. Keep an eye for recent finishes here:

Why does the metagame affect Death And Taxes?
"Your tournament performance will be determined by more than just your skill in deck building and game play. In Magic, it's also important to predict what strategies your opponents will be using, and make an effort to counter them as effectively as possible. Understanding how other players think can give you a leg up on the competition." - Reid Duke
This deck is built on the axis of exploiting unfair strategies that the rest of the format is abusing. The problem that can occur is, Death And Taxes variants may be focusing on beating strategies that just aren't being played in the expected meta. Understanding the meta and what portions of the meta a variant struggles with, will help secure more victories and insure that underwhelming card choices are not being played in critical slots.
(To continue educating yourself on the meta and "winner circle's metagame", read article titled, "The Metagame" by Reid Duke).

I recently had a baby and was locked out of salvation and couldn’t dedicate time to get it resolved. I’m aware that there are broken links in the primer and I’ll plan on having a full fix after ban announcement and m19 spoiler season ends.
Holler,

Also, thank you to all the veteran players keeping great dialogue moving and answering questions that come up.
To all: don’t forget that the primer has a section titled, “Leonin’s Library” And contains amazing resources as well. Private message me if there is a need for an update.
And finally, while I’m not commenting a ton, I’m always here and willing to help! Private messages or a hit up on twitter usually gets the quickest responses from me.
Much love, fam!

Lantern Control is a plague. The deck should not exist. Do not beat yourself up trying to meta them. You will skew your deck and still have a hard time. I repeat, do not worry about them. Play your best (if you choose to play) and know many decks cannot beat their average hands.

The 5C Humans thing:
I think 5C Humans was hard to beat before understanding how to knock them off balance. Humans have a very weak mana base and only a few potent threats. The question you really have to ask is are you willing to adjust your deck to beat them or do you want to force yourself to out maneuver them? Sadly, as always with creature match ups, you can't have both. I have gone both routes and can hopefully shed light on how to beat them.
Adjusting the your deck:
Humans has a hard time with larger creatures and creatures that "kill" stuff. The best main deck threats I have seen against them in my testing are: Thalia, Heretic Cathar, Blade Splicer, Fiend Hunter and Restoration Angel. Having creatures that can gang block or trade with their resources. Great back up plans for when they stumble is aggressively using Big Thalia and Leonin Arbiter to punish awkward mana and sequencing.
Afterwards the biggest adjustment would be balancing the SB. Cards that work wonders are: Tocatli Honor Guard, Sunlance, Dec Stone/Journey to Nowhere, and Sword of Light and Shadow. While its obvious that Tocatli is a Non-Bo with most DNT builds, the upside she provides against Humans is essentially an unlossable match up if drawn. Their entire deck relies on "ETB". I have tested her a ton and removing blade splicer and bringing her in against them is remarkable. After the SB strategy, you probably don't leave too many "ETB" that matter. Resto is still great and wisp still flies and trades with Mantis Rider. The other options mentioned are also great but very draw dependent against them.
Adjusting your play style against Humans:
I would not fault anyone for having a "bad" match up against Humans. I would say we all said the same thing about Death Shadow when it first rolled around. That match up can still get great blow out lines but feels less difficult than it did in the past. The key cards to try and out maneuver are: Reflector Mage, Mayor of Avenbrook*, and Mantis Rider.
Saving removal for those three idiots or looking to ambush block them is the most important. Believe it or not, the remaining cards in their deck are a bit of a joke once you start paying more attention to these cards. Seriously!!!
Sidenotes:
You got this, guys! Its not as bad as it seems. Just needs some practice and alternate planning to overcome the decks newness and appeal!

I’m glad to hear you are on Gideon of the Trials in the board. I had not seen many people testing or trying the card. I agree that is an amazing sb Card for the deck.
I have a question about endless sands? Like a lot of questions. Could you give a bit of insight for where you want that and how you implement it? Thats probably the most interesting thing your list was doing and I need answers. Lol.
Thanks in advance

To everyone, I don’t play a ton of tournaments but I do train very hard for them and have a good support team when making lists for pptq. If you are ever in need of assistance with tuning a list l, please reach out to me on Twitter! I love to take part in preparing people for tournaments.

Some quick highlights:
- Easy to cast
- filter bad draws and loot non-relevant draws (late game vial and repeat Thalia)
- survives wipes
- safest turn to drop against removal heavy decks.
- greeeat against affinity
- great for digging for sb cards in grinch match ups.
The list goes on but those are major components for a large tournament where variance will be expected. Understanding how card variance happens over a larger sample size will help you understand that more chances of drawing cards and smoothing variance out will be a shoe in overnight something like Serra avaenger.
If you want some detail, message me on twitter (deathandcatmix) and I’ll do my best to support your list!
