This episode we are talking tournament prep and metagame categories, decks we are working on, being nice and we spout off about a sick Spice Rack card!
In this episode, "Mr. Ninth Place" and I talk about Tribal decks! 5c Humans and UG Merfolk had great showings at the last SCG event so I brewed up Tribal Warriors with a bunch of new tools and cover some of the other "almost there" tribes.
There were some rumblings of unbannings with the last announcement and we speculate about what that could mean for the future of our beloved format!
In this episode, we talk about the ever growing Aggressive threat in the modern format. Looking at Caleb Durward’s recent run with Bant spirits, does this show a trend for more lower to the ground creature based midrange and tempo strategies? We dissect some recent tournament results and break down how you can still play what you want in this faster modern meta.
Like I said in op, it is all speculation at this point. I've played the deck for about 3 years now through tons of iterations.
I'll do what I have always done: rum it through 10-15 games and see how it does. Maybe it works, maybe not. I hate the idea of dismissing something without giving it a fair shake.
If your opponent has resolved a Karn or Wurmcoil through all of your targeted discard then the plan has already gone awry so it wouldn't matter what was in that slot.
If the opponent has no cards in hand the only draw that can kill him is a Wrath/Damnation. Considering there are 0 Decks in the meta running board wipes in the main (except All Is Dust in Bx Eldrazi which he is immune to) that is good enough for me.
How is 5 mana an issue? This is clean up crew/plan B if your Rack effects get destroyed. You're never going to be racing to get him on the board. He fills the same slot as Nyxathid or Pack Rat just with built in protection. Running 4 is a hedge against sometimes having to pitch one to Liliana. It is purely speculative at this point but I feel like he will be an asset.
The biggest pickup for us I think is Reality Smasher. Once everyone is in topdeck mode, it is essentially Indestructible 5/5 trample haste that should wrap the game up pretty quickly
Episode 6 - "El Potro" is up! I did an interview with Ethan Fleischer of Magic R&D at PAX East this past weekend to chat about Modern. We get to talk about MTG getting more creature based, some of his own design experience, the CMC philosphy on cetain kinds of spells and the magical day after tomorrow when Damnation finally gets reprinted.
We then go over the current metagame and why you should play Gifts Ungiven in your twin deck.
Strap in for our longest episode yet, but with so many viable sideboard decisions to be made in modern, it is not something we can just glaze over.
We talk about correct sideboard construction and a ton of silver bullet cards for your consideration. We also go over all the problems Pros are having with the format.
Lastly, we talk about Wilted Junk, Infect, Death Cloud and Boros Hatebears.
I have had some success using Dimir Machinations as a 2-of utility card. It can set up your draws or duff your opponents draws or transmute for Ensnaring Bridge.
Currently testing the new discard spells from FRF: I think Tasigur's Cruelty has some potential. Diplomacy of the Wastes has a cute interaction with Mutavault but I don't think that alone is good enough to warrant a slot. Dark Deal...I just don't know. It seems bad but maybe in a christmasland Waste Not scenario it could be something? Not convinced but it is a $0.40 experiment I am willing to try.
The "greatest power" clause is really what has made Doom shine for me. They rarely spread auras over more than one or two guys because they have a very poor threat density and often have to keep hands with one Bogle, some auras and land.
Even a well equipped Bogle can't kill a Falkenrath Aristocrat as long as you have sac fodder so they have to play defense or just get outpaced by flying beaters.
Another thing that people often forget is that while the creature isn't targetable, the auras are. Holding up a Disenchant effect and waiting for a Daybreak Coronet is an automatic 2-for-1 if you target the other aura (non-enchanted creature is no longer a legal target for Coronet).

I also introduce the Brewer's Challenge feature where we (and later maybe you?) pick a card or mechanic and try to build an FNM playable deck around it. First up is Wither! Here's the deck: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/t1t-brewers-challenge-wither-feat-t1t-ep-6/
