Sagas won’t be returning with this set. Mark said that they will return in the future

My guess is that it’ll be a new non-rotating format and how that will effect Modern, Legacy and Vintage. Standard obviously won’t be effected.

Mark is doing this solo too, so it should be interesting no matter what it is

By the looks of it, I would bet heavily on Kasmina being the face of the set.

This was my first impression as well

Mark will be making the fall set announcement at his SDCC panel. It’s incredibly irritating that they are not streaming it on Twitch, nor recording it. Like, come the f*** on WotC, get your crap together.

    my bet:
nordic/viking theme, with snow theme (lands as non full art), gods and a white villain

If it is a nordic/viking theme, it won't have snow lands. Rosewater pretty much nixed that recently in his blog. He said snow lands are more likely to show up again in a supplemental set than a standard set.

More likely in supplemental =/= as not going to appear in a standard legal set.

He said the same about Madness, and then Shadows over Innistrad happened. Anything that isn't an 11 on the Storm Scale can technically appear. And that means pretty much everything but Bands with other and substance can technically appear in a future standard legal set, it's just more or less likely.

I don't know how cagey he gets with potential spoilers, but I'm just guessing that if snow lands were going to appear in the very next Standard set, he might not have said it quite like he did. We'll see.

He often is quite cagey with his answers as he works 7 years ahead of where we’re currently at (about 2 years in full set design mode). While he knows somewhat about things in that 2 year period, the answers to the Storm Scale is at them moment he answers. Even then sometimes mechanics get changed by the other two teams after he hands the set off

Bag of Holding explicitly crosses the streams in black border. Yes in the PAST they have wanted to keep them separate, however with the growing popularity of D&D, the success of the Ravinca book, this is the perfect opportunity for a set based on D&D lore. Hell idc if it’s a brand new world or not, the feel of an adventure world not Zendikar with it’s heavy destruction, would be great.

If you think the concept of a Bag of Holding is exclusive to D&D, then you'd be wrong. The concept originally comes from older fantasy literature.
Mary Poppins was rocking a bag of holding 10 years before DnD first came out.

    One, I don’t believe it’s exclusive to D&D

Two both of your points are irrelevant for the very simple reason, WotC doesn’t (typically) go by historical context but pop culture ones. Not only that but MaRo already confirmed that it’s a straight up D&D reference when it was spoiled

I am fairly certain you can't, as the new bag of holding is seen as a different entity than the one you had on the field previously, so it would not consider the exiled cards to be exiled by itself. Someone will probably drop by with all the proper rule references though.

This is probably one of the more frustrating rules of magic, because it seems counter intuitive and frustrating when you want to make cards like this work.

In some ways, yes, but in other ways no. Let’s say you have two Bag of Holdings out, each with a few cards exiled, and both get bounced to your hand then your opponent makes you discard one at random. Which one was discarded? When you play the one in your hand, which set of exiled cards do you get? Because card can go into hidden zones, the rules have separate out instances of a card such that any time one enters the battlefield, it is considered its own new thing.

Not to mention that allowing the bag to retrieve exiled cards from a different instance of the bag violates the idea that exiled cards are supposed to be hard to get back and willingly putting them there is supposed to be risky. WotC is already dancing into dangerous territory with cards like Karn, Scion of Urza where exiling any card harbors little risk or with cards like Squee, The Immortal or God-Eternal Kefnet pushes Magic into Yu-Gi-Oh-like style of play.

In short, WotC has to be careful not to arrive to a situation where Exile 2.0 becomes necessary.

Mark has stated that they don’t like messing around with the exile zone it’s self, but for flavor they will occasionally make exceptions like Squee and the Eternalized Gods.

Karn is different as the cards don’t go to the exile zone but under the silver token. Those kinda effects happen the only difference is any Karn, Scion of Urza can interact with the token.

I would not be surprised if Archery is in fact a set that takes place on Faerûn. Tbh I’m kinda surprised that they haven’t crossed the streams more since buying TSR just so they could get their hand on D&D.

They bought TSR because it was dirt cheap due to massive mismanagement and they wanted to expand into other games than CCG's.
Seriously, TSR was effectively bankrupt when they got bought by WotC.

But no, I don't think they'll be crossing the streams further than the occasional campaign setting due to intense pressure from the fan base. Even that was only done because they tested the waters first by releasing a few smaller PDF's for worlds they visited and because people had been bugging them about it for decades.

That was part of it. WotC wanted a table top RPG for years and had tried to develop one that stuck, TSR’s bankruptcy happened to be fortunate for WotC. Mark has specifically asked about D&D mtg set and what people want.

Ok silly daft question, but what does "crossing the streams" mean?

    What... what..? what. Gaaaaaaaaaah

    'buster

It’s a reference to Ghostbusters. Crossing the streams of the proton packs potentially causing disaster. So within WotC the idea is to keep the MtG IP and the D&D IPs separate and distinctive so as to not cause disaster to either IP with a poorly received crossover

Well, it's splashy. But kinda boring since it's just throwing a bunch of burn around. A Dragon legend that cares about Treasure; now that would be exciting.

well that mystery plane they have ben trying to do for years thats after this set we have ben starting to speculate if that plane is a somewhat crossover of D@D so if thats speculation is correct we may have a shot of a legendary dragon that cares about treasure

You know, I was just thinking about that with the Bag of Holding print.

I love it, I really hope that this is a precursor to much more “crossing the streams”. Between the D&D supplements of MtG worlds, Ravinca book and the poll question that Mark had a couple of months ago regarding D&D in MtG it looks like it’s gonna happen.

really strong, she will be a magnet for removal.. but if can attack once or twice, will be a huge life swing

favorable winds looks nice in an all flying creatures deck

I thought about that, I do believe it's possible but flyers builds are generally cheap with lots of card draw and keep counters. Not only that favorable winds forces us to take turns off Generally there is only 1 heavy hitter at the 3 drop slot and this card would be in that role as a 3 of.

I'm in on this angel, makes an angel deck slightly more viable. Don't like the Helm of the Host idea that is way too much work.

    How about Spark Double then?

If you run it with Shalai, Voice of Plenty yes then again, the trick is to have enough flyers out there and not already be behind due to sweeper/discard/counters

    Quote from user-11161173 »

I think there are enough strategys that could already implement this beast, for example the blue list that combined cheap flyers with Curious Obsession, now with a white splash ad Dovin, Grand Arbiter and this Angel and you might end up, casting it on turn three, then play Spark Double next turn to close the game, in UW colours you can also ad Loyal Pegasus and Spectral Sailor for more consystency. Or maybe go for the Izzet-Drakes Build and splash white to go Jeskay, i think there might be enough options for this angel.

I'm not sold on the drakes idea, typically you want to hit Niv at the top end of the curve and I've tried grixis and jeskai versions of it with Teferi and Hero. Problem is that drakes loses out to discard and saccing. Again, I dig the flyers idea, just need to do some brews and see which one works out.

I was working on this yesterday, there are enough good flyers in Standard to make it viable, this what I came up with a a rough starting point

But I do like the idea of putting her in MonoU tempo as a alternative wincon, especially against the more aggressive decks
