  • posted a message on Current Modern Banlist Discussion (1/18/2016 update - Summer Bloom/Splinter Twin Banned)
It's sad to see two top tier decks get banned like this. If they needed to take Twin down a peg they could have banned Deceiver Exarch and let Twin remain to try to combo off with Pestermite or that Temur one. The combo and deck is still there but now they have to combo off with a creature that dies to Lightning Bolt, the most played card in the format.
And same thing with Amulet Bloom, why ruin the deck for its fans. Ban Hive Mind instead. Turn 2 Primeval Titan is scary but like many have said before it is not all that common. Plus at least Titan dies to removal unlike Hive Mind which forces the pact and no one can possibly interact with that.
It's disappointing to see both decks go but I guess that's how it goes. I just wish they would try harder to not ban entire decks and instead look to only weaken them.

Hey guys I'm new to playing the deck, took it to a couple FNMs and did ok with it and having lots of fun playing it. A couple questions about the deck though. What's your sideboard strategy against Affinity? and what do you guys think about the matchup? Maybe I'm just playing wrong, which is very possible at this point, but it feels terrible.
And is Leyline of Sanctity necessary in the sideboard? I have zero Jund/Junk in my meta. There is Burn and Delver but in that case I think Kor Firewalker would be better.

I play Tajuru Warcaller, it triggers to give my guys +2/+2. In response to the trigger my opponent play Unnatural Aggression and kills my Warcaller. Does the Rally trigger still resolve to buff my team?

Hey guys tournament report for you all. I got all my Goblin Piledrivers (a little late to the party) and it is awesome. That guy is just insane, yes they kill it right away but that's because it's such an enormous threat that it backs them into a corner that they have no choice but to kill it instantly. So they kill one and then you play another and go "ok, got another answer?" Love my Piledrivers. My List:

    Round 1 vs Burn
I outraced him in game one, killing his Eidolon of the Great Revel as soon as it hit the field. Game 2 I was feeling good, dropped an early Dragon's Claw and followed it up with another the next turn. Things got sticky when he plays Kor Firewalker and the game dragged on for a loooooooong time. Eventually after answering all my Goblins with burn spells he does get me in game 2. Game 3 started off much the same way with Claw and Firewalker on our respective sides. Being on the play made all the difference as being able to flood the board with goblins was all I needed to win. Win, 2-1

Round 2 vs Pillow Fort Worship
Interesting GW deck prison deck. First game I guess he kept a bad hand because he didn't get anything going and I stomped him to death. In game 2 he had Sylvan Caryatid and Worship by turn 3. I paused and thought about all the cards in my deck and sideboard and then scooped em up. In game 3 I made sure to bolt the bird and race to the finish. He mulled to 5 and was relying on that bird, it happens. Win 2-1

    Round 3 vs Burn
Game 1 was probably one the most lopsided games I've lost with this deck. They had everything that game, every Bolt every Blaze I couldn't do much. In games 2 and 3 there were no Claws or Firewalkers on either side. I was able to flood the board with mighty gobos and win each game. In game 3 I won by dealing 15 damage in one turn. Always kill Pilerdriver! Win 2-1

    Round 4 vs Living End
I had honestly never played against this deck using Goblins but wow what a good match up. With Mogg Fanatic and Mogg War Marshal I had a board presence the entire time through 2 Living Ends in Game 1. In game 2 he never had the combo and just died. Win 2-0

An awesome 4-0 night for me through two burn decks that I honestly thought should be a tougher match up but don't underestimate the speed of Goblins. Upgrades I'd like to make in the deck would be to splash green for Atarka's Command and Destructive Revelry. Life gain doesn't hurt this deck all that bad but the 3 to the face and team pump would be awesome. And having no out to enchantments is just flawed. Hope you guys like my build and have fun with Goblins.

I love all the talk about Wild Nacatl. I've been having great success with it in my deck for all of this year. In my opinion it makes the deck faster and more resistant. When Nacatl sticks around it easily does 6-9 damage on its own, yes the opponent has time to remove it but when they don't have it right away it's big trouble for them. The higher creature count means Leyline of Sanctity is not a death sentence and Kor Firewalker can be blocked or attacked through. Nacatl does so much to help against hate and speeds up the deck. In a meta where everyone expects Burn, having Nacatl feels like having an ace up your sleeve. It's also pretty hilarious to drop the cat on turn one and people go "oh you play Zoo."

On another note, has anyone tried Day's Undoing? I've been really excited to see if this card can do anything to help us. I will for sure do my own testing but would love to hear some discussion of others testing sessions.

Hi guys! I've followed this thread since the release of Goblin Piledriver and getting it as my pre-release promo (I know such a bandwagoner). I had a great FNM with the deck and feel so excited to tell you guys about my 4-0. My list:

Round 1 vs UWR Control I won 2-0. In Game 1 I pushed through a lot of threats and he tried to stabilize with Snaps and Bolts Eventually tapping out for Verdict which gave me the chance to finish him with a hasty Chieftain and Grenade. Game 2 goes pretty much the same way, I just run all over him and again Grenade gets it done.

In round 2 I faced Grixis Twin. Game 1 played out similar to my last match at first until he tries to flash in an Exarch Eot which I Stoke to get rid of it (Really came in handy, I was just trying this card out but instant speed 4 damage worked out) Next turn I get him down to enough life for Bolt and Grenade to kill him. Game 2 went all his way. He drops a turn 2 Dragon's Claw and is able to answer all of my threats. He drops a Tasigur and beats me to death. In game 3 I Molten Rain his land on turn 3 and 4. That sets him too far back as he is over run by Gobos. So I win that 2-1

My 3rd Match was vs Ad Nauseam which I won 2-0. Game 1 he didn't interact so I kill him on turn 3 with double Grenade for the finish. In Game 2 he mulligans down a lot and again gets overrun real quick. This felt like a great match up.

My last match up was against Affinity. In Game one he comes out hard and fast with Plating on Vault Skirge but Mogg Fanatic saves the day and allows me to stabilize for triple Grenade to the face...so epic. Game 2 he again comes out fast with 3 Signal Pests this time. I'm able to defend myself with Searing Blood and Smash to Smithereens until I double Grenade him for the win and an awesome finish to the night.

All in all I'd say Goblin Grenade is the best card in the deck, without it I would have never won these close games that I did. People just don't expect to die when they have 10 life. Mogg Fanatic really pulled its weight in the affinity match and Stoke the Flames saved my butt big time against Twin. Since I only had the 1 copy of Goblin Piledriver I only got to play it once i think and even then it didnt actually help me but I'd love to get more of those guys and see what happens.

Anyway thanks for reading hope you guys like my build. I am certainly looking forward to the next FNM to try and duplicate my success!

How would you guys sideboard against Grixis Delver? Is Destructive Revelry worth it just for the Dragon's Claw they board in? Is Kor Firewalker a good choice against them?

Hi guys I just went 4-0 in a Modern Daily last night! Thought I'd share my excitement with the rest of you. Here's my list.

    Round 1
    Vs Burn - Won 2-0
    Round 2
Vs BW Tokens - Won 2-0
    Round 3
Vs Patriot Twin - Won 2-1
    Round 4
Vs RUG Midrange - Won 2-0

I saw some post on here a while back about using Wild Nacatl, at the time I thought it wasn't that great of an idea or would be too slow but just because it's such a fun card I decided to try it out for fun. After a fair amount of practice and fine tuning the deck I came to the list above and was winning a lot in Tournament Practice so I decided it was worth trying out in a Daily and it was awesome. Nacatl beats down hard against control and gives you game against Kor Firewalker. I know 3 toughness doesn't seem all that amazing in a format defined by Lightning Bolt but it dodges a good amount of removal like anything dealing less than 3 damage.

I'd say Mono Red is certainly viable although it's probably not played as often since Fetch lands were reprinted. Leyline of Sanctity is an issue but since the additions of Monastery Swiftspear and Eidolon of the Great Revel the deck no longer straight folds to it, not saying it's an easy game but Mono Red has new tools that it didn't in the past where it got the reputation of auto loss vs Leyline. Kor Firewalker is a problem for any color combination but keep your Skullcracks handy and you should do somewhat ok. Mono Red also does have some advantages. You get to play Flames of the Blood Hand which makes you very resilient to life gain and you also don't take any damage from your mana base, or at least not as much depending on whether or not you run fetches.

That's what I was thinking and that makes it a narrow sideboard option. I usually look for versatile cards to put in my sideboard but with Kor Firewalker I thought maybe I was missing something. Soulfire Grand Master seems like Lightning Helix wouldn't Helix be a suitable enough SB option?

What match ups is Kor Firewalker good in? Besides the mirror.

Seeing Burn lose to Bloom Titan sure was disappointing. I mean I expected burn to lose but I was hoping the pros could show me something that I may have missed about the match up, instead it was the usual doomed for lack of interaction. Seth was winning, winning, winning, looking good, and then Hive Mind game over. Even his little sideboard deck tech thing just had me thinking yyyeeaahhh he's got nothing. Maybe Blood Moon will have to be in our sideboards since that actually shuts them down and with the great performance at the PT it will soon be everywhere.

The discussion regarding Giant Growth vs Might of Old Krosa was a meta game debate over the prevelence of Lightning Bolt not a budget discussion. This deck only needs to fetch green shocks and forests so Misty Rainforest isn't an auto include

ok it's killing me, how do we beat Bloom Titan? I desperately need help with this match up because it feels like an auto loss.

Interesting to hear about GP Kobe again. The 2 burn decks in the top 8, and all but 2 of them in the top 32, were Boros. I hear a lot about Dega with Bump in the Night and Rakdos Charm but in that GP Boros was the more successful build. I know this is out dated meta info at this point but it could be something to consider. I like Bump a lot and Charm gives a ton of versatility also lots of talk about Rain of Gore in the sideboard but those players didn't feel it was needed and they did great. Also the winning deck had an interesting sideboard. It looks narrow at first but I thought about it more and it answered the meta just fine.
