I'm sure he will not be impeached or arrested, but arresting him for war crimes is the more realistic way of putting him out. Though I don't know what good that would do, you cut one snake's head and another snake will takes his place.

This would open the door to arrest Cheney and Bush on war crimes as well, which I think the Republicans would want to avoid. Hell, you can arrest Clinton for war crimes and probably get Reagan as well absentee on war crimes. Arresting someone on war crimes, especially someone in power like this is a very bad idea.

    Quote from Blinking Spirit
For God's sake. I get that they weren't only reviewing Tea Party applications. What you need to get is that that's not an automatic excuse. It doesn't matter how many other ways there are to get into that review process, if one of those ways is simply "be a conservative group". Just like it doesn't matter how many other ways there are to get strip-searched at the airport, if one of those ways is "be a Muslim".

What is being missed here (and this is a real simplification of the actual issue), is simply how convoluted and complex the United States tax code is. Furthermore, you had a bunch of low ranking workers (not necessarily unskilled but entry level positions) reviewing many of these cases because of how big the case load is. You had a bunch of new organizations popping up around the United States at the time and many had filed their tax code wrong.

Filing for a 501(c)(4) is complex because of the terminology. I hate using Wikipedia but:

501(c)(4) organizations are generally civic leagues and other corporations operated exclusively for the promotion of "social welfare", such as civics and civics issues, or local associations of employees with membership limited to a designated company or people in a particular municipality or neighborhood, and with net earnings devoted exclusively to charitable, educational, or recreational purposes.[35] An organization is operated exclusively for the promotion of social welfare if it is primarily engaged in promoting the common good and general welfare of the people of the community.[36]
501(c)(4) organizations may inform the public on controversial subjects and attempt to influence legislation relevant to its program[37] and, unlike 501(c)(3) organizations, they may also participate in political campaigns and elections, as long as its primary activity is the promotion of social welfare.[38] However, 501(c)(4) organizations are not permitted direct or indirect participation or intervention in political campaigns on behalf of, or in opposition to any candidate for public office.[36] The tax exemption for 501(c)(4) organizations applies to most of their operations, but contributions may be subject to gift tax, and income spent on political activities - generally the advocacy of a particular candidate in an election - is taxable.[39]
Contributions to 501(c)(4) organizations are usually not deductible as charitable contributions for U.S. federal income tax, with a few exceptions.[40] 501(c)(4) organizations are not required to disclose their donors publicly.[41]
The lack of disclosure has led to extensive use of the 501(c)(4) provisions for organizations that are actively involved in lobbying, and has become controversial.[42][43] Criticized as "dark money," spending from these organizations on political TV ads has exceeded spending from Super PACs.[44][45]
The origins of 501(c)(4) organizations date back to the Revenue Act of 1913, which created a new group of tax-exempt organizations dedicated to social welfare in a precursor to what is now Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(4).[46]

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/501(c)(4)#501.28c.29.284.29

The most important thing is, these organizations are not permitted direct or indirect participation or intervention in political campaigns on behalf of, or in opposition to any candidate for public office.

The reason why this is important because one of the organizations filing for (and receiving) a 501(C)(4) was a group called the American Future Fund. This is what they did:

American Future Fund (AFF) is running ads in support of Senator Norm Coleman (R-Minnesota) while Iowa Future Fund (IFF)is running ads against Governor Chet Culver (D-Iowa) and there has been speculation in the media as to who is behind AFF and IFF. The other day, Paul Kiel at TPM Muckraker posted about it as have the Des Moines Register and Minnesota Public Radio, among others.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/04/03/489579/-American-Future-Fund-Iowa-Future-Fund-501-c-4-GOP-Fronts

Which given what is needed to be required to obtain a 501(c)(4) would strip them of their tax-exempt status. However, they haven't been stripped of their status and what they are doing is at worse illegal and at best very suspect.

Other criticisms have arose regarding the IRS and how they handle religious institutions and 'politicizing from the pulpit'. They received tax exempt status even though they became heavily involved in candidates.

TL;DR Version: IRS codes are confusing and open to interpretation. Tea Party/'Conservative' Groups were singled out because a) the IRS received a large amount of new groups b)they incorrectly filed their reports. This all comes down to miss-communication, revamping the IRS tax code to a more definitive status and making sure groups aren't actively involved in campaigns. The biggest issue is 'dark money' and that's something for the Senate/House to tackle, which they won't.

I'm confused; how can a bank be privately owned and have no federal influence whatsoever? I thought that banks were to be insured by federal money...This is a confusing case.

You have to understand how insurance companies operate. they opperate according to the insurance laws in each state. each state has an a insurance board that dictates how much in coverage and everything else that is needed.

if they violate those laws then you can take a complaint to the insurance boards.

Insurance companies only understand the bottom dollar. If a person costs too much, they will drop them regardless.

Where in the Constitution does it say that Congress has the power to force me to buy insurance?

So laws forcing me to buy auto insurance are illegal?

I don't post here often partly because I forget to but I do occasionally like to read political threads.

I find that what the insurance companies do is akin to a monopoly. For the longest time, I could not find insurance simply because of preexisting conditions. And yet the insurance that picked me up was a branch of one that denied me.

  • posted a message on why do so much Americans hate Obama?
I don't post here a lot but I do like some good political debate ^^

In regards to the 'hatred' toward Obama is a reflection of American society.

We are growing into a society filled with instant access. Instant gratification. Instant everything. If something isn't fixed this instance we get upset. We get angry.

Americans are not a patient people.

This situation we got ourselves in, we simply can't fix in 2 years.

But people don't want to hear that. People don't realize that things simply don't happen over night or in 2 years. It takes a while. It takes hard work. It takes dedication. But we don't want to hear that. We want to hear now.

As for the health bill, while I oppose the pork that was stuffed in it and many Americans are opposed more to that than the actual bill, the founding on a health care bill is essential.

Sorry to necro a little bit but this one came to me for anyone wanting to open a store:

Credit card companies scam ya. If you open a small store, you might want to think about nixing cards. A pain I know but they charge you. They nickle and dime ya. It's like a 1 per transaction. Bigger stores can eat those costs or get benefits but not smaller stores.

You have the internet, you can learn everything you need to know without spending a penny. Read through the forums here for the major decks and browse the Magiccards.info site by set to get familiar with the random cards you'll see.

If you have the internet you have all the knowledge you will ever need. Making a deck you can't be helped with, it takes money, but knowledge is easy enough to find if you try.

I have tried, but the rules are a bit confusing me as well. What the hell happened to banding?

    Here's my story:

We got a fair amount of players playing Magic. But the city doesn't have a lot of shops to play at. The economy isn't good either right now. We lost a few due to the economy or other problems. But that is neither here nor there. I do occasionally do drafts but I don't do any constructed.

My problem is that I left when Ice Age came out, tried to get back in at Fifth Dawn, moved out, came back in Ravnica but then quit and started just putting together sets (not player sets, just the sets. I like the art :D).

The problem is, the period between Ice Age and Fifth Dawn was huge. I didn't have a lot of green, due to periods of no jobs and other interests (Star Wars CCG comes to mind). The problem getting back in is I missed these sets, so I don't know all these cards nor can I run out and grab them. I don't understand the combos or how this card syncs with this card or why this card is popular or what deck it runs into. I want to learn, I do but the data base is so huge and there are so many obscure cards that pop into existance, I just can't keep up with it all. Especially since I missed a MASSIVE amount of the blocks coming before Ravnica and Fifth Dawn. The other problem is, I can't run out and grab two or three boxes and put together player sets of the popular cards. I can only grab packs here and there. I'm in between jobs and right now I have more problems than Magic. I do hang out at the local gaming store (and I volunteer to work at another card shop) trying to pick up, but it's so hard. They play Legacy, Type II, everything and well it's so difficult to simply step in especially since some of the cards are so hard to get. So I tend to pick up packs and do drafts because that's easier for me.

  • posted a message on [ALA] Tri Color Lands!!!!?
I've actually been tinkering right now with one of my sets with tricolor land...how about:

    Land of Tri Color
    Land
As Land of Tri Color comes into play, return a land card you control to the top of owner's deck. If not, Land of Tri Color comes into play tapped.
:symtap:: Add black mana or blue mana or green mana to your mana pool

Or if you want to make it basic land types:

    Land of Tri-Color
    Land - Swamp Island Forest
As Land of Tri color comes into play, return a land card you control to the top of owner's desk. If not Land of Tri Color comes into play tapped.
:symtap:: Add black mana or blue mana or green mana to your mana pool. Land of Tri Color deals 1 damage to you.

that is self sacrifice for a greater cause and has a very different flavour to normal or un death, mausoleums are a place of "storage" for the dead and as such equate more to corpses and zombies than self sacrifice.

I always see mausoleums as the opposite of a crypt.

BTW thanks for the advice...I'm still fiddling in my head on how to work it.
