The End of an Era

The new GoST Enchantment looks good, but it's something I want to draw, not grab it with Zur. That attack step already occurred and it isn't affective until next turn. The only issue I had was against infect. I couldn't draw into circle of protections or removal the first time I played against it. The 2nd time I played against infect I had the board locked down.

Ghostly Prison is an all star in this format.

I like how people get their hopes up in staple reprints. How did RTR and BFZ work out for ya? Lol.

While playing the deck Grishoalbrand, I played Through The Breach on a Simian Spirit Guide for the 2 points of damage to win.

I was thinking about Taking out Tasigur, The Golden Fang. He's great but it's defeating the purpose of searching our library for answers when he milled something useful. This is true for most decks he's in but Zur plays a little differently.

Grixis Delver is showing up in a lot of locations and tournaments. Zur is less favorable in control matchups. If we can get Geist of Saint Traft on the board, we can usually get somewhere.

Lingering Souls has been a life saver in a lot of matches. I feel 2 is great, but 3 may be one too many. I'll do some more testing with it.

Turn 1, Land, Faithless looting Discard Atarka, World Render
Turn 2, Land or Simian Spirit Guide into Goryo's Vengeance on Atarka. Attack then play Fury of the Horde and pitch 2 red cards. 24 damage turn 2.

Waiting until turn 3 to possibly draw/play one of 2 cards in the deck that's a necessity to not die against burn is a lost cause. Leyline>Siege. I tried it before and it's useless.

3 Detention Sphere felt right and it was never a bad draw. Shadow of Doubt it limited to searching the deck. I believe the word you meant to use for Squelch is "Efficient". It stops Planeswalkers, Oblivion Stones and other Activated Abilities. Shadow of Doubt requires 2 colors, Squelch is 1U and has a lot more use in this meta.

Purge is too specific and players will play into Batwing. Blood Moon shouldn't worry you too much. If you're a good player, you would know not to fetch Shocks if the opponent is running Grixis or Twin, especially game 2 and 3. 6 Discard spells, 3 Detention Sphere should take care of it.

I played Esper Zur at a local SCG 1k event yesterday and placed 3rd/4th. Here it is:

1st round; Against Naya Aggro 2-0
Multiple Inquisition's picked his hand apart pretty quick. Anything that got out was path'd and cleared the way for Geist of Saint Traft. 2nd game I saw a Ghostly Prison and COP: Green, drew into a Zur and finished the opponent off with Zur and Thassa.

    2nd Round; Against Infect 1-2
1st game I won by drawing answers and no aggro until turn 10ish. 2nd game was my mistake. I assumed the game was going to be grindy and kept a hand with 3 lands, Thassa, Zur, Geist and an Inquisition. Found 2 creatures and essentially a turn 3 win. He killed me with only 2 lands put down on my side. Last game didn't go into my favor trying to start with a kill spell or a COP: Green. I was almost able to stabilize but pump spells took me to 10 infect.

3rd Round; Against UR Twin 2-0
1st game I devoured his had with Inquisition's and path'd anything thing that got out. Darkblast and Ghostly Prison took the game. I led him into a Cryptic command with my thoughtseize and Meddling Mage on Splinter Twin led the was for Geist to win. 2nd game was a lot like the first, Except I let him play a Pestermite and I already knew he had a Splinter Twin in hand and Batwing Brume for 12,000 damage.

    4th Round; Against Jund 2-0
1st game I knew I had to get my tokens out as soon as I could. I was able to top deck a Detention Sphere to get rid of Liliana with just Zur Remaining. I picked apart his hand and on the board he had a 6/7 Goyf and a 6/6 Raging Ravine. I played Mage to stop Maelstrom Pulse from taking out Zur or the 2 Spirits. I top decked a Detention Sphere and played it on Goyf, swung Zur to spreading seas the Raging Ravine. 2nd game I played Inquisition on him twice and both times revealing a Liliana. I started out with 2 Inquisition, Zur, 3 lands, and a Lingering Souls. He saw all 4 Liliana's that game and again, COP: Green was there to save the day. I was at 2 life and he was at 17. Every time I swung with Zur I stabilized a little more. Took him out with 2 Souls and Zur with 2 Steel of the Godhead.

5th Round; Tooth and Nail 2-1
1st round Inquisition tore his hand apart and Geist won after 3 rounds on the board. 2nd game was a disaster on my end and he got out Painter's Servant and Iona. 3rd game I Thoughtseize to reveal 3 Obstinate Baloth, 3 lands and a Lotus Cobra. I got Zur out quick and played a detention sphere on a Garruk he put out and slowly gave him the beats until Geist showed up.

6th Round; Red Deck Wins 0-2
We were both friends and after talking to a mutual friend, he told us we had to play and can't draw. 2 players sitting at 10 points and their tie-breakers were better than ours. So we played, well he did. I couldn't draw into any lands or protection. The game was over in an instant.

Well as it turned out, losing to him actually helped my tie-breakers. The two players with 10 points lost and I ended up 7th seed. I had to play 2nd seed, The match I just lost to.

Quarter Finals; Red Deck Wins 2-1
1st game Inquisition and Thoughtseize with path destroyed him. I let his Goblin Guide poke me a few times to try to get lands, and it went in my favor. Geist took the game over. 2nd game was a little more grindy but 2 Eidolon of the Great Revel took me out. 3rd game I started with a Leyline and a Ghostly Prison. He was stuck on 1 land for awhile and Zur and Geist each with Steel of the Godhead on them took him out quickly.

    Semi Finals; Collected Elves 1-2
1st game was over by turn 5. Turn 3 Geist, Turn 4 Steel of the Godhead, Turn 5 Geist + Tar Pit. Geist gave him the beats while I kept the road cleared with kill and hand destruction spells. 2nd game he overwhelmed me with elves. 3rd game he had enchantment removal and 2 Collected Company. Swung for 21 on turn 6.

24 lands are good enough, but not when 2 of them are TechEdges. I'm cutting them. I'm also putting in at least 1 mainboard Leyline of Sanctity. I'd like to put in at least 2 Squelch and some Snapcaster's as well. I was also looking at another Lingering Souls.

Any more updates to this deck? I run 2 Tectonic Edge main board and 3 Fulminator Mage in the sideboard to help deal with Tron. The Sultai charm has worked very well for me and I'm considering running a third.
