Ixalan is all about exploration. Many things we have seen so far mention Orazca, the City of Gold. Treasure tokens are a theme in this set. I think Orazca is going to be represented as a city full of treasure. This will be represented in either of two ways: a legendary land, or a DFC artifact that turns into a legendary land. It will most likely follow the treasure theme.
Maybe a land like Ozarca, the City of Gold. Or Ancient Compass that turns into Ozarca, the City of Gold. If a DFC, it would not have either enters the battlefield phrases, obviously.
I have been testing a deck with Inspiring Statuary and Tezzeret the Schemer. I am trying to make it FNM usable, but the game plan seems so all over the place. I would like help brewing a deck using both of these cards.
Each mix of cards I have built and tested just doesn't seem focused enough to be consistent. I was wondering if anyone else has had any success with any deck similar to this, and if so, if you have any tips or deck ideas. I would greatly appreciate seeing lists that can make this kind of deck work in Standard. Bonus for Whir of Invention toolboxes.
Fetid Pools and Canyon Slough are better in this deck as I need multiple colors of mana, especially for lands that CITP tapped. Ifnir Deadlands was in the deck in one iteration, but ultimately I need to build more mana, and often cannot afford to lose a land. As for the weaknesses I was referring to, the biggest issue I have is game one I can either gear it to better beat control or aggro, but if I favor one, I lose really hard to the other. So far I have been playing it the way it is listed, but that gives me more of a middle-of-the-road game one versus either, rather than a strong game versus either one. Against aggro Essence Scatter and Sweltering Suns comes in, but versus control I board in the Lay Bare the Heart and Doomfall.
I'm not entirely sure, but it seems as though this set is trying to slow down the format. Looters are usually good, and in some cases have been rare. I think having it as an aggressively-costed rare that can give itself unblockability is pretty fair for both limited and a standard that want to slow down. What actually worries me is that all the playable/fringe-playable creatures in standard for aggro decks are going to have 1-toughness. That makes the recently-spoiled dinosaur that deals 1 damage to all other creatures an devastating board wipe against some decks.
I'm just getting back into Magic after a 7-year hiatus. I've only been picking up cards that don't rotate and trying to find a deck that's really my style. I saw Baral, Chief of Compliance and then saw Drake Haven. I've been trying to tune this deck for my local tournaments--both FNM and otherwise. The concept should be pretty obvious, it's to abuse Drake Haven and to a lesser extent, Faith of the Devoted. Cathartic Reunion is in there to add some more discard for the enchantments, as well as to trigger Archfiend of Ifnir twice. It also lets me pitch excess lands into the yard for the singleton Hostile Desert. I am currently running a split on the enchantments, because drakes tend to be better against control decks, while the drain can help me sustain my life total against aggressive decks where I cannot always block with drakes. The local meta consists of a few emerge decks, some monument decks, a few Ramunap Red decks, and finally Glorybringer all day every day, i.e. in almost every deck.
I am having a ton of fun playing this deck, but I could really use some extra eyes looking at it to shore up some weaknesses. Thanks!
I really want to play cards like Servo Exhibition, Yahenni, Pia Nalaar, and Gonti, as these are all the kinds of cards I like to play. I feel like the only issue is that so much of my deck feels like it needs to be geared to deal with Ramunap Red that I cannot build the fun kind of deck I want to play. This deck does alright against, them, but it could definitely be better. I intentionally built it to be rotation proof, thus that is why a number of great cards from other blocks are omitted. Some cards I am still trying to work into the deck are Glint-Sleeve Siphoner, Aether Hub (to help support Siphoner), and a copy or two of Skysovereign, Consul Flagship. I played a Hapatra deck at the last FNM, and I while I went 2-2, every single game I lost was to my opponent drawing multiple Glorybringer in a row and me not ever drawing Chandra's defeats after board. I am trying to deal with that in this deck, but I do not want to include cards that are rotating, i.e. Grasp of Darkness. Any help would be appreciated.
I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I haven't played Magic in about 7 years and I'm a bit rusty on the rules. I have Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons in play and then cast Grim Affliction targeting a creature. When it resolves, does Hapatra's ability trigger once or twice? The part I'm confused on is that she reads 'one or more counters' and the Proliferate happens during the resolution of the same card that placed the -1/-1 counter on the creature. I believe it triggers twice, but I want to be sure.
Back when Future Sight came out, I made Top 4 of my States tournament with a deck that revolved around Teferi, Shriekmaw, Mulldrifter, and Tombstalker. It was a pretty solid deck losing in Top 4 to a pretty horrible series of draws in game 3. I have loved Tombstalker ever since flashing him in with Delve during my opponents attack phase, while evoking a Shriekmaw at instant speed, then momentary blinking the Shriewmaw to kill both his Tarmogoyfs and blocking his Troll Ascetic with my Tombstalker and him having no open mana.
What are the odds of them reprinting Tombstalker with Delve as a mechanic in this block?
This deck tries to take advantage of noncombat damage to get Rakdos, LoR. Once out, its uses these same sources of damage coupled with combat damage, to power out huge threats.
With Rakdos, Lord of Riots out, Lobber Crew, Breath of Malfegor, Exsanguinate and Warstorm Surge can allow you to drop a lot of colorless threats or a HUGE!!!! Maga.
Any ideas or questions, please respond below. Thanks!
Actually it was quite a house in UG Threshold.dec
- check about halfway down the page for a deck list by Raphael Levy from Worlds 2002.
Those were the days. When a deck that was mostly commons could still crush it in competitive Standard.
Maybe a land like Ozarca, the City of Gold. Or Ancient Compass that turns into Ozarca, the City of Gold. If a DFC, it would not have either enters the battlefield phrases, obviously.
