Totally agree. Well said. I understand why you moved away then. Are you going to keep it Mono-Blue or are you thinking of Green/Blue? Rothgar13 seems to tout that direction pretty heavily.

I brought back and old strategy earlier today on Twitch with some 8-Seas Merfolk in Modern! I didn't end up with a great result (2-3), but the deck definitely showed potential. Off-screen, I crushed a B/W Eldrazi deck, on-screen, I beat Burn and Scapeshift....lost to W/U Control, Goblins, and Humans in the league.

Please don't hesitate to like, share, comment, and/or subscribe to my channel for more content like this. Thank you all for your time and support so far!

All great points on Merrow Reejerey folks! Phantasmal Image is probably a good replacement if you already of 4 of each of the usual suspects in the deck.

Here is the YouTube from my LIVE Twitch stream earlier tonight...played 2 straight 5-match leagues on MTGO and it took just over 4 hours! Check it out, like it, comment on it, subscribe to me, share it if you'd be so kind...it helps immensely!

Spell Queller is certainly a different look, and I like being able to deal with Supreme Verdict! I just think it might be a slippery slope...once you put 3 spirits in, then you'll add Kira, Great Glass-Spinner...then, all of the sudden, Bant Spirits! Be careful hahaha!! Smile

    ===========

Like a lot of players recently, I've been playing against a lot of Humans and Spirits. I've found that Merrow Reejerey is the MVP in my opinion with that match-up. Especially with two out, my one drops net one mana and/or are able to tap two critters down at a time so I don't have to worry about getting a Spreading Seas.

So, all I'm saying is don't underestimate and forget about Reejerey because he's a three drop. In pairs, they are an epic source of power and advantage....even alone, they can get a lot done! Old dogs like new tricks(ters) and all, but they love the old ones just the same!!

Anybody heard of this version of Storm before?

It uses and abuses Ruby Medallion similar to modern storm with their spell reducers.

If anyone is interested, I could get a deck tech and loose strategy guide put together for it.

It basically ends like a lot of other storm decks, with Grapeshot and/or Empty the Warrens. I also use Banefire for back-up.

For now, I've got a deck tech and some matches from MTGO on my YouTube channel that can be seen by joining the playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUX6EnKm-j0&list=PLoY2TvKiEogkq3dDGqkRZuOAite3i_5dJ

No worries, bud. It's all an opinion and based off of your experiences with it. I just see it do so well against Burn and the mirror especially. Then, Storm hates it, Tarmo hates it, works for Mardu/Jund with all the two drop removal, CoCo combo pieces both cost 2...and on and on. Just about every deck has a very relevant 2 drop that can potentially be backbreaking if countered.

Thank you for checking out my stuff you JustA6/6Trampler! No worries if it doesn't sway you, Cowology2. Deprive is super strong too and should be used to the max! I like to have a versatile counter package where a combo of 3 or 4 can go into any sideboard game plan.

Great job beating Saffron Olive!! Regardless of all the crazy decks he plays, he's good at it and it's difficult to beat him sometimes.

Merfolk may not be as strong as when Modern began, but it's grandfather'd in as a competitive deck and I think will always be one as long as the lords are legal haha!

I did another league live on Twitch last night, it ended in a "sub optimal" result...2-3, but the 5th match was pretty funny with how salty my opponent got and used the word "sub optimal" when complaining about the Spell Snare I just used to counter their spell reducer (vs. Storm).

Anyway, fun times were had regardless of the finish. Feel free to like, share, comment, subscribe to me on Twitter/YouTube/Twitch. #FeartheFolk

PS - I tried to embed the YouTube video into the post, but it kept coming up with an error. If anyone could help me on anything else I need to do other than surround the link in the normal way...it'd be much appreciated! See y'all downstream!

  • posted a message on [Primer] Modern Belcher (Forest Belcher/Land Thinning Belcher)
Hey there folks, I've been playing with 7-Forest Charbelcher for a few months on MTGO now and in paper for about a month. I've gone the ramp route where it's a lot of spells that get the lands out of the deck as soon as turn 3 and hope for a turn 4 belch for the win. I've found Leyline of Sanctity to be a huge help against discard-based decks as well as burn, mill, and lantern control among others. I use four artifact/enchantment removal with 2x Nature's Claim and 2x Fracturing Gust. Then, I round it out with the Tron/Storm hate in 4x Damping Sphere and add the cherry on top...3x Gaea's Revenge. This can come in to replace Wurmcoil Engine against Path to Exile, Counterspells, and nongreen spot removal (pretty much anything but Maelstrom Pulse and wipe spells.)

Nissa's Pilgrimage is one of my new favorite cards as it can potentially get nearly half the landbase out in one spell. Recross the Paths is fantastic because 1) it gets you an untapped land and 2) it allows you to legally stack your deck if you have all 7 lands in play already.

I have a deck tech and several matches on my YouTube Channel and my Twitch Channel (both linked below.) If you'd be so kind to tune in and subscribe, it would be help immensely. Thanks for your time, hope to see y'all firing off The People's Cannon soon enough.

Hey there folks, I haven't posted here in a while...but, been plugging away with our friendly but fierce underwater sea people. I think I just crossed the five year mark of playing Merfolk regularly in Modern!

Anyway, here is a video from my LIVE Twitch stream TODAY where I achieved the elusive 5-0 in a Modern League with the new M19 Rare...Mistcaller!!

Check it out, like it, give me a subscribe if you'd be so kind. I have several other decks on my channel and plan on doing much more Merfolk content. Hope y'all have a fun rest of the week.

  • posted a message on Burn
Hey folks, been playing burn for years in legacy and pauper mainly while sometimes in other formats. I've never posted here but have been lurking recently for answers to reanimator and lands other than graveyard hate.

I've found that Stingscourger is a good answer for Show and Tell decks, Reanimator, and Lands. I've had some moderate success in the Competitive Leagues on MTGO (several 4-1 finishes a few days in a row) when sideboarding three of these, 4 Exquisite Firecraft, 4 Smash to Smithereens, 2 Volcanic Fallout, and 2 Ensnaring Bridge.

Just figured I'd come in and drop a few lines, hopefully Provoke a few thoughts...

I just wanted to point out that most of the counterspells we use have merfolk-related art and/or flavor text on them.

Unified Will - Quotation from a Lullmage and alludes to merfolk being an audience to the opponent's failure.

Negate - newest version has art with a merfolk blocking a lightning bolt with a giant shell.

Dispel - RTR version has a quotation and picture of Prime Speaker Zegana.

Spell Pierce - quotation from a Lullmage about a hole in someone's plan.

    ....that's pretty cool!!

Pierce in the main wins me a lot of game 1's. It's an easy card to sideboard out for 2 easy spots for more aggro or focused side agendas. Thassa is cool, but I just haven't tested enough with it to have a solid conclusion. I'm not a fan of Spellskite at all, but I see why people play it. I see it as a completely defensive card and makes for a defensive approach...and I'm totally against that with Merfolk. It's either heavy aggro or mid-range tempo in my book. But, that's just what works for me and my play style.

I'm taking my 'Folk to Cary, NC for an IQ on Sunday. Very excited about it! I'm really only going for some money, some good times with about seven friends, and to enjoy my unexpected weekend off!

Most likely will be taking the same list I took to Regionals: http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=111522

The only change will be -1 Harbinger of the Tides for +1 Master of Waves.

Expecting to see a lot of Expertise, Storm, Burn, Affinity, and of course Death's Shadow.

I rebuilt my sideboard recently due to Nikachu's influence...although, I just couldn't justify using 4x Unified Will when Negate can really come in handy after a rough attack/block step or board wipe. Very glad to read that he is going to make the change anyway haha! The third Dispel is crucial and I really don't even miss Echoing Truth too much. Fatal Push is becoming a real problem regardless of countermagic. That one is almost on the level of Anger of the Gods with how difficult it is to survive.

HUGE congratulations to Nikachu for his run at GP Vancouver!! I didn't get a chance to see any of your matches, but am excited for you nonetheless.

I got the only Top 8 with Merfolk in Regionals here in America but you just literally blew me and my deck outta the water hahaha!

I doubt this will launch Merfolk single-handedly into Tier 1 range, but I'm kind of hoping to stay Tier 2 so people don't specifically start sideboarding for it.

And for the record about the Tectonic Edge vs. Sea's Claim thing - I can only repeat a couple things I've already read as reasoning why I play Edge over Claim (even though I took 8 seas to a recent local modern tournament and got Top 4.) I think Edge is better if/when you need to side out the Vials because it'll help with at least 2 extra land as I only play two copies but Nikachu and others play up to 4. I also think the idea that boardwipes like Obvlivion Stone and Engineered Explosives are huge reasons to play Edge over Claim. If I decide to play it, I completely dedicate to 8-seas in the main and just go in expecting to have fun rather than play without them and hope to survive removal much better.
