What do I cut for the Tec Edges (and how many?) I usually already take out Vials vs Jund and it feels like I have a ton of cards in my board for the matchup. It might help curve out tho.

I would cut Harbinger because he's not very good against Jund since they can play around him easily. You can also cut Vapor Snag as this one isn't particularly good either-you want to kill creatures against Jund not just bouncing them.

I don't want to cut Harbinger because while Jund is probably the most popular deck, it really isn't by a large margin and i wanted to have the deck tuned for a pretty general metagame.

Here's what I ended up on after my changes:

Unfortunately, I lost AGAIN in Top 8 of a PPTQ. Been really frustrating because I've been trying really hard to get that coveted win, but it just hasn't been working out. Here's a quick report:

    Decklist:
    http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/merfolk-0911/

Been pretty happy with the list. I was a bit upset I lost to Jund twice today and I wasn't really OK with that. This matchup is always really close and I think I just happened to get the short end of the stick twice.

    Short Report:
Round 1: Esper Spirits w/ Gifts Package
G1: Crushed him in typical aggressive merfolk fashion.
G2: Kept a creature light hand then drew all lands while he beat me down with Spirits
G3: Kept a fairly shaky hand, but didn't want to mull to 5. He mulled even worse and I got there and he didn't. Worth noting I tried to leave up countermagic when possible for Gifts Ungiven because I was VERY scared of Elesh Norn (this guy goes to my LGS. I know what his deck is about).

    1-0

Round 2: Ancient Ziggurat 5C Deck (This deck was on camera at Indy)
G1: We both slammed dudes on the table and it was a board stall. Eventually I won the board stall because Merrow Reejerey tapping triggers to tap enough blockers to get through.
G2: His greedy keep might have gotten there, but I kept missing with his Noble Hierarch by bouncing it etc. In addition, I had made a read on Spell Queller that ended up being correct and I was really able to put in work on him.

    2-0

    Round 3: Jund
G1: This one was pretty close at first, but he wouldn't stop drawing removal. There was a point I could have double blocked his large Tarmogoyf to kill it, but chumped instead. This was definitely a mistake, but I don't think it ended up mattering because of the sheer amount of removal he had (after sticking Kalitas).
G2: Not sure what happened here, but I kept Island Mutavault and a ton of spells hand. Almost got there, but just didn't. I died to a large Tarmogoyf again after he IoK'd both of my Dismembers. Jeez.

    2-1

    Round 4: Jund
G1: He has way too much removal and kills all my guys.
G2: I mulliganed to 4. Every hand was either Mutavault and spells or all spells. Unreal. I was extremely tilted after this.

I thought I was out of Top 8, but I decided to play the last round anyway just to see.

    2-2

    Round 5: Dreaded Mirror
G1: I drew a lot of wrong Lords, but I saw he stumble on land and kept based on having Vial (we knew what we were on beforehand). I eventually pulled teh trigger on playing the lords because I needed him dead and it paid off.
G2: He had Vial I didn't and he got to play more dudes than me.
G3: I had Master of the Pearl Trident and it became multiple after Phantasmal Image. Image looked very good in this game. My clock was just faster than his as a result. I was dead on the swingback.

    3-2

    I narrowly made 7th. Top 8 time!

Top 8: Thing in the Ice Jeskai Pyromancer Ascension thing that Topped one of the GPs
G1: I discovered once they got Pyromancer's Ascension online you couldn't win because all their Bolts become Double Bolts etc. He did that.
G2: See G1. It was absurd; he had exactly 3 of the same spell to get around my Relic of Progenitus.

    Conclusions:
-Maybe I need a better Jund plan. If you don't curve out or they draw too much removal, you get rekt. Any suggestions based on my current list?
-Maybe my list is TOO general? for my area. Can't say. There is a ton of Jund/Abzan and sprinkles of all the other decks (next most being Burn, Infect, Bant Eldrazi, Some Tron; almost 0 affinity; there weren't any in the room today and I played 0 Hurkyl's for that reason)
-Tried 8 Seas at an IQ a few weeks ago, but vs Jund I didn't feel like I even win because of the Seas; dropped a match vs Infect as a result because youre just so much softer to it it feels like with the decreased removals. My Merfolk opponent today had also lost to Jund and Abzan today (he was on 7 Seas) and we were questioning the worth of the Seas effects a little (He didn't think those matchups were bad FTR; we were both 0-4 vs BGx today); he had acknowledged them as not amazing, but that it did something vs everything so kept playing them.
    -My deck REALLY hates me

*shrug* What changes could I make for next PPTQ? I'm really tired of losing in Top 8. Jund is popular but I don't know if I want more Seas because I don't like being softer to other decks. Felt accidentally softer to Bant Eldrazi last time I tried it too (Dismember is great in that matchup).

Hey guys. I played in 2 PPTQ's this weekend, playing 8 seas at both. Minor tweaks between the 1st and 2nd. As I said last night, I finished Sat's PPTQ just missing top 4 (14 ppl makes for a cut to top 4) and went 1-3 drop today. Heres the list from Sat:

    11 Island
    3 Wanderwine Hub
    1 Minamo
    1 Oboro
    4 Mutavault

    4 Cursecacatcher
    4 Silvergill
    4 Master of Pearl Trident
    4 Lord of Atlantis
    4 Harbinger of the Tides
    2 Merrow Reejerey
    2 Kira
    4 Master of Waves

    4 Spreading Seas
    4 Sea's Claim
    4 Aether Vial

    SB:

    2 Relic of Progenitus
    3 Vapor Snag
    3 Hurkyl's Recall
    1 Dispel
    4 Negate
    2 Tidebinder Mage

    Matches were:

    Bogle 2-1
    Black White Tokens 2-0
    Abzan Combo 0-2
    Green Red Werewolves 2-0
    Suicide Zoo 1-2

Missed top 4 on breakers because there was a 9 pointer playing a 6 pointer and the 6 pointer won which was good for me since it meant I had a shot for top 4. Sadly the 6-pointer that won jumped me on breakers.

For Sunday's event, I moved the Kiras to SB for two Vapor Snags, I made the 3rd Snag a Dismember, Made 2 Negates into Remands, and cut a MoW for a third Reejerey.

Going into the Sunday event, I felt that 8-seas would be better placed because it would be bigger and would have decks with greedy mana bases. While I was right, it didn't go very well. Here are my MU's for Sunday:

    Round 1: G/R Tron - 2-0
    Round 2: Mardu Tokens 0-2
    Round 3: Narhi Control 1-2
    Round 4: 8 Whack 0-2

Started off strong by beating up on tron, didn't even need more than 1 seas each game as he never drew more than 2 different tron lands before dying to my fish.

Round 2 against tokens, while getting my few threats killed, I ended both games on 10 lands. I even brought an island out in game 2. Just drew WAY to many land.

Round 3 was kinda the same. Got game 2, almost got game 1. He controlled the game well enough in game 3 and I just flooded.

Round 4 needs no explaining, just to low to the ground.

So, not really a great weekend for me Magic wise, good job to everyone who made day 2 at their respected GP's. My next PPTQ isn't till Oct at my local store, so I'm sure to go to it.

This about describes my own weekend with fish except I played in a pptq then an IQ, but I scrubbed both for similar reasons you described so I feel ya -_- rough weekend for the fish this week.

There was a GPT for the scrub outs at the IQ and I just decided to play my friends Jeskai Nahiri instead out of frustration....I would have gotten killed if I played fish based in the matchups I got (made top 8, but lost to Bant Eldrazi...also lost to Bant Eldrazi as merfolk in the IQ).

How is everyone's experience on the Bant Eldrazi match up? It feels good, but I think i just drew too many lands and not enough islandwalk Lords in my games it felt like.

That's 7-2, which should be good enough for day 2.

Had some frustrating losses vs Jund and Wilted Abzan today at the PPTQ. Going to try 8-Seas at the IQ tomorrow haha. There is quite a bit of aggro in my area, so its hard to say how well I'll do with it, but I wanted to explore it especially since there was SO MUCH Jund and Abzan today. Todd Stevens unsurprisingly won said PPTQ with Bant Eldrazi.

2-2 last night. Lost to goblins (can't beat then going under me as well as pile-driver). And esper spirits (probably a good match up), but just drew a LOT of lands, which keeps happening so I might cut a land 0_o

Beat GR land destruction and RUG Traverse pretty handily though

Lost in Top 8 at a PPTQ again, but to draws this time Frown
5-1 in swiss (forced to play pair down in swiss last round) to clinch first seed only to lose to poor draws against a guy I already beat in swiss.
I'll type a little more extensive a report next post...I promptly went to go play Legacy Fish right after (3-1 there) so I'm pretty tired right now.
    1. Death Shadow Zoo (2-0)
    2. Infect (2-0)
    3. RW Control Thingy ft. Blasphemous Act and Boros Reckoner? (2-0)
    4. Abzan Company (1-2)
    5. Eldrazi Tron (2-1)
    6. Living End (2-1)

    Top 8:
    Eldrazi Tron (0-2)

I've been pretty displeased with Pierce as a whole from playing it in the metagame in my area.

I'm running all my countermagic sideboard: 2 Unified Will, 2 Dispel, 2 Remand.

Im testing out Remand right now. Its ok so far.

If they dredge well, its a pretty hard matchup. I've played against a lot of versions and the Jund Dredgevine version with Amalgam, Neonate, Gravecrawler, and Lotleth Troll is by far the scariest version. There's also a BUG version with Hedron Crab, but Neonate is probably just better (especially vs us since we don't just have natural islandwalk). Its next to impossible to beat multiple early Vengevines. Your draws need to line up pretty well and if you stumble you're definitely dead. That being said, that deck can also draw/dredge horrendously and we have Relic post board so we still have plenty of game.

There are also some more "resilient" versions of dredge that play Haunted Dead, but those aren't even close to as fast and I'm not worried about it.

One of my opponents at the shop played Deadly Allure and I got smashed because I went from having a game ending islandwalk clock to losing the game because I had to block his stupid Gravecrawlers. Not sure how common that card is, but its pretty savage vs us.

    4-0'd Monday and yesterday!

    http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/merfolk-0811/

Planning to roll with something similar at a PPTQ Saturday.

There are some nods to Petr Sochurek's updated list. I know 3 Master of Waves sticks out like a sore thumb, but I'm seriously considering bumping it down to 2 and replacing it with a Phantasmal Image or another interactive spell. The metagame at the stores I play at are a tad too aggressive/Non-midrange (Plenty of Aggro, Combo, Big Mana decks. Not a lot of Jund,Junk, Mardu, Jeskai but some) oriented and I just kept dying with multiple Master of Waves in hand; they simply cost too much mana and take my full turn. That being said, the field here is pretty diverse. I do like full set of Reejerey a lot. It helps get your creatures to a place where your opponent is locked out of swinging and then you can turn the corner (vs aggressive decks). Spell Pierce is probably something I would play at the GP level, but never around here (maybe not even at a local GP though).

Monday: Grishoalbrand, Bubble Hulk, BW Creature Combo Thing with Rally the Ancestors? (Zak Elsik plays in my area lets go with that), BW Tokens
Wednesday: UG Hardened Scales?, Kiki Chord, Naya Bushwhacker Zoo, Kiki Chord

    Notes:
Still not amazingly comfortable with my Bushwhacker Zoo matchup. Could I just play more Harbingers/Tidebinders? We both kind of traded off having bad hands games 1 and 3 and drew pretty normally game 2 where I got there. Vial seems very important.

This came up and I shipped it. Not sure about it though:
Dispel, Tidebinder mage, Silvergill Adept, Lord of Atlantis, Vapor Snag, Island, Cursecatcher

I shipped it on the basis of if I didn't draw a second blue source it was going to be difficult to stave off even the average draw of the Zoo deck. I was on the draw.

The 6 I drew was not very exciting:
3 Island, Cursecatcher, Merrow Reejerey, Vapor Snag. It got there though because I drew straight 2 drops off the top (one being Tidebinder Mage).

I beat Worship with Vapor Snag: Loss of Life isn't damage. He was pretty surprised because he thought I was dead.

Thanks! Tidebinder was a vanilla pretty often. I think I'm fairly comfortable with 3 Harbinger 2 Tidebinder and the 3rd Tidebinder in the board.

3-1 last night. Lost to Grixis delver because I mulliganed too aggressively (6 was unplayable kept a pretty unexciting 5) g2 and to a topdeck murderous cut on master of waves g3 Frown

The blue source mutavault no vial hand as your only lands seem to work out about half the time, and I'm always tempted to Mulligan them.

Beat Dredge, Kiki Chord (hehe revenge), and UWR control otherwise.

    Quick Report. Nothing too exciting.
    PPTQ 7/30
Round 1: Jund Grishoalbrand Ft. Gitrog Monster
G1: I have an OK hand after a mulligan but I don't draw much better. He dies a pretty slow painful death. He also fizzled post Goryo's Vengeance that I had no say over.
G2: This one I won much more convincingly. I have a ton of countermagic and just countered everything he played after some beats. He boarded in a lot more removal and "midrange" cards like Abrupt Decay and Pia and Kiran Nalaar, but that's not the kind of game merfolk loses to combo. We lose when you go for a fast kill from underneath me.

    1-0

    Round 2: Colorless Eldrazi
G1: I stomp him fairly convincingly with a perfect curve out. Vial into Multiple lords into Master of Waves.
G2: This one was a little more of a game. He was stuck on 3 lands though, but I felt my hand was good enough to handle his stuff even if he got stuff going. He just kept playing Endless Ones for 3 and those simply werent good enough.

    2-0

    Round 3: Infect
G1: I lose on turn 3. He goes Might, Dismembered potential blocking Mutavault, then Become Immense for exactly enough Delve to kill me. Disgusting.
G2: I get a game loss because I forgot to write Wanderwine Hub LOL I usaully fill out my decklists at home before I go to tournaments, but I was out of printer paper so I was kind of in a hurry after I got there to fill one out. Promptly stole some deck sheets for future events.

    2-1

    Round 4: Infect
This was my friend. I was paired down and he gave me the win because I simply have a better shot. We played it just because though.
G1: I was just able to slow him down with enough Snags. I was also able to Spreading Seas Inkmoth Nexus.
G2: He goes crazy with Thing in the Ice, but I tempo'd him out too hard because my hand was really aggressive. I was able to rebuild after TITI flipped and killed him anyway.

    3-1

    Round 5: Naya Company
I was supposed to be able to draw in, but he decided to play me for positioning, which I can respect, but he was kind of a jerk about it.
G1: He draws a lot of lands and I'm able to Islandwalk alpha strike after a board stall making sure to play around a Collected Company and/or removal spell blowout.
G2: Another board still happens and I'm able to make some careful attacks to kill him in 2 turns. He has a turn to draw path for Master of Waves (but not have me dead necessarily) to live, but he draws a land instead.

    Top 8: Kiki Chord
G1: I mulliganed and kept an acceptable hand, but it wasn't great. I do end up almost getting him, but for some reason he plays the Melira Combo and just has it.
G2: I make a pretty huge mistake. On the second to last turn of the game he has a bunch of creatures: Tapped Kiki, Spellskite, 2 Finks (one finks clone from Kiki), and a tapped Wall of Roots. He's at 14. I Spreading Seas his only untapped white source to see if he had Path. He didn't. I draw Harbinger off the Seas. I forget about Chord of Calling and decide to move in on a lethal Islandwalk attack for exactly 14. He Chords for 2, tapping him out. I know he plays Lone Missionary, but I also know Viscera Seer also takes him out of range (since he sacks a Finks) so I pretty much have to counter this with Cursecatcher, putting him to 2. He untaps, uses the last counter on Wall for Bird, taps Kiki to make a Bird clone, makes White mana and Angels me. Unbelievable.
If I saw he could play Chord for 2, I would have definitely played Harbinger on Kiki instead because there's no way in hell he was recasting Kiki AND Angel with the Mana he had (3 lands, one was Seas'd). I also wasn't dying to Melira combo because he was 2 pieces away from that. My advice to you guys is make sure you count their chords and it's pretty easy to tell if someone is counting Chord (usually, but he in particular wasn't because he was pretty proficient with it). I also confirmed he had Missionary in the deck and he said he was trying to go for that.

I also consider this a good matchup. I've lost to it very few times in testing.

I have another PPTQ in 2 weeks. I want to win this one :')

Edit: I'll post my list tomorrow.

Pretty big PPTQ coming up for me Saturday. All the DFW grinders are going to be there as it's week 2 of Dublin RPTQ invites. I think there is going to be a lot of people on Little Zoo (the "big bad end bossy team" should be playing it) and I'm fairly nervous about that deck because I lost to it at the Open pretty convincingly. The rest should be your standard fare probably with a little more emphasis on Infect than normal. Tidebinders in the main for sure!

To follow up on this I finished 5th. I lost to Kiki Chord (a matchup I consider favorable) in Top 8 Frown
