Basic lands. Star foils look so good. I do have some full art/extended border alters littered throughout each pile as well.

calibretto posted a message on MTGS Average Peasant Cube 2023Ok - So I thought this would take me a good portion of the week to do, but I went on a tear yesterday and did it all.Posted in: Pauper & Peasant Discussion
First, the links:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aGNGVQPoxwybJxJRrLjpzXQsQwgYbatSw-JxPvi-tRY/edit?usp=sharing
https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/mtgs2023
The rules I used for inclusion:
Must be updated through LCI (with a full update - one Geological Appraiser didn't count)
Must be regularly updated (if not with each set release, at least a few times a year to bring the cube up to speed)
I know this is technically a CubeCobra average peasant list, but a large chunk of those lists are from regular MTGS users. Since the project stems from this forum, I think MTGS Average still makes sense.
One thing to note is that because CubeCobra only offers a specific number of color coding options for tags, I had to tag by tens instead of the normal fives. This doesn't really change much until you get to the more fringe choices in larger cubes, but I thought it worth mentioning. If your choice is close, you can always get the exact numbers from the Google doc.
The first thing that stood out to me this year is that Shock Lands made their way into the average list. I guess more and more people are updating their mana bases to include rare lands. Last year I think there were a couple random rare duals that made it in, but I cut them from the list before uploading since it was weird to have just one or two. All ten shocks were there this year, so they're also in the list.
While browsing the finished list, the next thing I noticed is just how good Lord of the Rings was to cubes of all shapes and sizes. What a great cube set.
The last thing that popped out at me is how people are leaning into archetype support rather than just good commons and uncommons. I see lots of support for self-mill and graveyard strategies, persist combo, and some others. Very cool to see.
I'm sure there's a ton of data comparison between last year's list and this year's, but I'm spent so I'll let others do that if they're so inclined.
Anyway, happy holidays, friends, and I hope this list is useful for you. May 2024 give you all many chances to cube! -

This set is getting interesting, many strictly better than cards I run today have been spoiled, so I'm excited to see the complete spoiler.
These 1 MV and 2 MV creatures are getting ridiculous. -

Like, there is probably a point to be made that BW reanimator isn't really supported in your cube, and maybe you should have different cards in your gold slots.
BUT
They freely admitted to passing half of the deck they should have been in. It is very possible once you have a lot of efficient WB removal to pick some small aggressive dudes and use said removal to ride them to victory.
The size argument comes back a little bit to the point I made above about maybe running different gold cards, but for the most part it seems you have plenty of duplication going on. Blood Artist, Cutthroat, Bastion, Falkenrath Noble, Syr Konrad, Judith, Mayhem Devil, Garna... yeah I think you're fine. I run 460 and have never had any complaints. In fact, I find it makes it more interesting knowing that every draft won't be exactly the same.
Also complaining that you cant just take good cards and win is ... indicative of someone who could spend a little time familiarizing themselves with the draft environment. Even if youre playing MTGO vingate cube, you need to have a cohesive plan with your deck to 3-0. Cubes this power level even more so, since you don't have a lot of individual cards that you can just drop and win the game on the spot.
Finally, if your aggro deck can't beat a 5 mana pyroclasm, then you probably built it or played it wrong. -

Leelue posted a message on [[Peasant]] The Peasant Cube Discussion Thread (C/U/)I support aristocrats but only somewhat. I do have a more generalist approach with the cube insofar as I support the broad archetypes in all colors and only put substantial energy into go wide, ramp, +1/+1 counters, and blink.Posted in: Pauper & Peasant Discussion
//
The guy who purposely, knowingly, didn't draft the open deck in his colors isn't allowed to complain about the cube when the deck he tried to force was contested by essentially two different people at the table. He may say that the people bordering him were in other colors, but literally everyone else at the table was in his. Maybe he uh should take the signal from the other 71% of the field.
If he thinks volcanic torrent is too much, he might be happy to know I don't run the card. Instead I have sulfurous blast, meteor blast, shower of coals, and Fear, Fire, Foes!. Don't let him know that I have arms of hadar in black too, and that either aggro or tokens are still probably the best general decks in my list.
If he thinks aggro decks can't handle you playing an overly-fairly costed pyroclasm, wait til he sees that they make aggro cards with 3 toughness. You can also do this thing where you put a +1/+1 counter on a creature with two toughness, or (if you're really creative) not play out your whole hand.
I don't trust this person's ability to ascertain what cards were or were not worth splashing for. He had a 7 drop, didn't figure out how to draft a deck to stay alive long enough to cast it, but instead complained that he couldn't cheese it into play. He drafted a deck without payoffs, knowing that there was a chance that some of the cards he "needed" might not be in play, but... you know... he didn't draft incorrectly apparently. One should just have access to the deck they predict will come up. It was your fault for not reducing the variance in his draft.
Some people play magic with zero accountability.
Depending on how much you value seeing this person again, feel free to show him my post. -

calibretto posted a message on MTGS Average Peasant Cube 2022All right, peasant friends. It's that time again. It's the Average Peasant Cube for 2022!Posted in: Pauper & Peasant Discussion
As a disclaimer I want to say that this list is not “THE” list. It's a fun project that I like to do that generates some discussion and some folks seem to find helpful. Your cube is your cube and you should build it in a way that you and your play group find fun. If you're the only one running a specific card, that doesn't make it wrong. I personally like to use this list throughout the year to help me make the tough cuts for new cards. It can also be a little eye opening and help you “kill your darlings” so to speak. I have no intentions, however, of cutting Knight of the Holy Nimbus, even though I am literally the only one of you savages that's running it.
If you're not here for my ramblings, let's just get right to the links:
The cube on CubeCobra: https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/mtgs2022
The Google doc with ALL the data: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SUOOAnf4beTsnYp9-FHNqDak2kmjyg6y6FaogxAJLNw/edit#gid=0
We lost 10 cubes due to those cubers not having updated their list in a long while. I wanted to ensure that all cubes were updated at least through DMU, but ideally through BRO. Even with that loss, though, it seems the popularity of peasant is pretty high because I was able to get the lists used up to 51 total lists this year! The cubes that didn't make it in the average list are listed in the Google Doc in red text.
One note I want to make, however, is that our little MTGS community has only dwindled over the past few years. While this is labeled the MTGS Average Cube, in reality it's more like the CubeCobra average cube. I had to source most of the cubes used in the comparison from recently updated lists over there. If we stuck to only those of us that are active on MTGS, we'd have a paltry number of lists to compare.
Now, on to the data and some things I noticed.
We technically got 9 new sets this year that could potentially add new cards to our peasant lists. If you discount Jumpstart 2022 for being generally unimpressive and Unfinity for being fairly niche, that's still 7 sets with potential additions.
Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty
Streets of New Capenna
Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate
Double Masters 2022
Dominaria United
Unfinity
The Brothers War
Jumpstart 2022
Universes Beyond: Warhammer 40K
The most prominent thing that really stood out is how it seems folks are moving away from dual lands in favor of the Thriving lands, the new Gates, and Vivids. I don't know if I'm on board with that just yet, but it was interesting to see.
There were 201 cards in last year's list that did not make the cut this year. A note on that is last year's list ended up at over 800 cards, but this year's came in at just over 750. When I upload the list, I filter down to 720 cards and then just take the rest of the cards from that section. This year that got us up to cards that were present in at least 9 cubes. Last year I had to go all the way down to cards present in at least 6 cubes.
Last year I noticed that several cubers were really supporting +1/+1 counters. This year, I noticed that cubers seem to be leaning into more archetype focused environments in general. There is a good amount of support for Blink and Graveyard Matters themes represented in the average list. It also looks as though more people are hopping on the Persist Combo support train, which I am here for.
I've already compared my own list to the 2022 list and am considering several swaps. I noticed a few higher ranking BRO cards that I may have overlooked and I like the idea of including more archetype focused cards to help flesh out some things I'm already supporting in one way or another.
Anyway, I look forward to the discussion on this year's average list. I hope you all find it somehow useful. I'm sure I'll be referring back to it quite often over the next year.
Cheers, friends, and happy cubing! -

BlackWaltz3 posted a message on MTGS Average Peasant Cube 2021Huge thank you for this! Recently moved to a new area and want to be able to cube with people but my regular cube is not proxied and I don't want to worry about theft. So, I just started building a peasant cube. Figure it could be a stepping stone that allows me to find a playgroup I can trust with the regular cube -- also just something I could take anywhere with less concern.Posted in: Pauper & Peasant Discussion
My process for building my peasant cube started by extracting commons/uncommons from my regular cube. Unsurprisingly, they pretty much all translate to peasant. Then I self identified some powerhouse uncommons that fell just short of my regular cube list, those also are in most peasant lists. Next, I looked at peasant archetypes from existing lists, identified the key role players for the archetypes I would also want. Next, I used this list to identify my outliers. I identified outliers as the cards I am running which appeared in less than 15 other lists or the cards I'm not running which appeared in 15 or more lists. My last steps are looking at 2022 peasant threads for inclusions from this year that and then filling in a few gaps to complete the list.

I won't, because Vortex is better than Snag and variants. I don't think it's particularly close either. Play vapor snag if you're looking to encourage a very specific kind of aggressive tempo deck but for pure power concerns, Rona's Vortex is far-and-away better. The flexibility to stall for time early game and tuck 90% of threats mid/late game is pretty unmatched. There's a reason this card was a house in its limited format. -

I don't run either, so I'm just evaluating at face value. But if I did run one, I think it would be Vapor Snag or even another Unsummon variant like Fading Hope. Both of these can hit the tempo play, removing a blocker or attacker for U. Vapor Snag has the bonus point of damage that usually won't make a difference but can come in clutch occasionally; while it is true this could be detrimental when used on your own creature, it likely would be just as irrelevant against your life total as against your opponent's. But being able to also Rescue one of your own creatures, whether it is dying to removal or combat, is pretty huge, especially in a cube with good ETB effects. I would absolutely use it this way.Quote from n00b1n8R »Convince me that Rona's Vortex is not on average better than Vapor Snag. Yeah sometimes that 1 life is critical but does that come up more often than the 25% chance you're in UB as opposed to any other UX combination?
How often are people bouncing their own guy?
Rona's Vortex trades that flexibility for two other effects. First and least, bouncing a planeswalker. Most planeswalkers in Peasant just tick down, so bouncing an opponent's walker to hand may detrimentally reset their loyalty; I'd rather bounce a blocker and just kill it. Second, you can pay 2UB to remove the target - but we have much more efficient removal available, even in Peasant. Even if the recursion-proof removal is what appeals to you, I don't really see anyone clamoring to play Feed the Serpent. There is something to be said for a flexible card with two modes, but again, the second mode comes with the aforementioned trade-off and only works in the right color combo. -

Enclave Cryptologist: 31% today, down from 77% (-46%)
Cast Down: 34% today, down from 77% (-43%)
Cards that stood out to me as surprising:
Kraul Harpooner - What?? What insane 2's are people playing today? Am I so out of touch?
Skyship Plunderer - Are blue 2's really that much better these days? I guess there's certainly more options now but I still want a few of these.
Sentinel of the Eternal Watch - My wife.
Ultimate Price and Cast Down - I think these are still fine on power level, but more and slightly better options exist these days so I can understand the change. I remember Cast Down being hailed as a permanently locked staple when it was spoiled which is pretty funny to think about when you look at the sets released these days.
Soltari Champion - Are people against shadow, or online-only uncommons?
Rakdos Cackler - Still seems on par to me, in either colour.
Psychatog - I will not cut this, haha I just won't.
Orzhov Advokist - Is this a powerlevel thing or are people still not wise to how broken this is?
Serendib Efreet - Are people just drawback averse, or is this actually not that good any more? The rate still seems fine.
I wonder how much of these changes are due to sampling from a less insular pool of cubes. In 2019 there were 30 cubes sampled while this year there were 94 that made the LCI cutoff (and mine wasn't one of them).
PS. If anybody knows how to post tables, please let me know as I think the legibility of that list sucks.

I was definitely hesitant about the swap. I resisted swapping Man-o'-War for Exclusion Mage a few years ago because bouncing your own guys is interesting value and obviously the jelly is iconic, but when a card comes out that's this close to being strictly better, I felt like it was time to kill the sacred cow.
I don't post much these days but I read pretty much every post in the peasant threads and you've really hit the ground running in terms of post quality btw so welcome.

Yeah fair point but I think there's a lot of interesting new cards in every set that will never make the cut because their power isn't pushed enough. Ultimately to make the cut the new cards need to be on par with some of the most powerful Peasant cards ever printed and that's not something I expect to see from more than a handful of cards in any set.
