That name is so corn-cheesy awesome though.

    it could be cornier.

i mean, it could be dragon's maize.

    Cool

i bet they use leylines as some kind of map. yep.

also, a set that has anything to do with mazes is a perfect opportunity to reprint Hunted Wumpus.

    just sayin'.

Wait. Dragon's Maze has (?) planeswalkers? I seem to recall from the original panel that it was 1 in the last set, for a total of 5 PWers... if they've changed it since, and, combined with MaRo's tweety question "do you guys seriously want to see Ral Zarek?" (paraphrased) and yet more art showing up for him...

I am actually starting to think it's pretty likely they STOPPED THE PRESSES and tossed his fans a bone. Would be neat.

since we're naming creatures and stuff...

...i love furnace of rath. i know nobody else plays it, but since i play at a kitchen table exclusively, it does some pretty fun stuff. sure, it costs 4, it hurts you (because you probably tapped out to play it) but, especially in conunction with fireblast, 8 points of damage on turn 4 has ended many, many, many games for me.

but nobody plays Furnace of Rath. Frown

the main problem, as i understand it, with signets, is that it provides both fixing and ramp for any and all decks. on Ravnica, fixing is essential, and IMO the most elegant, balanced, and flavor-nostalgia-touchy-feely-goodtime solution is to switch the cost and activation of the original signets...

I would be very, very, very, very surprised to see Kiora as a "tribal" planeswalker--it contradicts their description of her. Her DotP deck didn't have a single merfolk (to my recollection).

    I wouldn't sweat it.

Boros Gideon would not be the first mono white planeswalker to have a boros version.

    WAjani Goldmane
    RW Ajani Vengent

Other planeswalkers known to have colors shifts in different versions are
RGSarkhan Vol and RBSarkhan the mad

U Tezzeret the Seeker and UB Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

But there are plenty of monocolored creatures and spells affiliated with Boros. Shifting his color is unnecessary just to have him join up. Feels way too much like bottom-up design for something as flavorful and iconic as an established Planeswalker.

I think the point he's making, too, is Gideon isn't too trusting of fire magic. Which is not to say that that's all that R as to offer...

If they can sell the story really, really well, and we don't end up with some kind of poorly conceived, hack transformation (think Anakin-->LOLnowi'mdarthvader) then i'm fine with it.

With that said, I hope she's not too merfolk-centric.

Nah, I think she's about as merfolk-centric as Chandra is human-chicks-in-steampunk-goggles-centric. As in, she is one, and has associated with others of her kind, but it's not what her magic's all about.

Kiora's about summoning incomprehensible nightmare-beasts from uncharted abysses.

Well, as we all know, RTR is going to be a multicolored block focused on the guilds. In the promotional picture for Gatecrash (RTR's second set), Gideon is fighting with the Boros for some reason. Considering that he came to Ravnica to get help against the Eldrazi, wouldn't it make sense for him to go native and assist only if the Eldrazi followed him? What if that's the main dilemma in Return Block.

unless he's just picking up some like-minded allies so that he can later launch an attack. somehow. i don't know how you transport an army through the blind eternities though.

i hope you're right, actually: i'd really really like to see at least SOMETHING happen with one of the big 3, and Eldrazi seem the most likely contender for a source of conflict on the reopened plane. if she actually makes it into paper form, maybe Kiora, with her fascination with MONSTERS FROM TEH DEEP (and the presence of Eldrazi cards in her DotP deck to further support this) will have something to do with their arrival.

    Quote from Wretchedest

The picture of Jace is thematically identical. Jace in front of Niv, Gideon in front of Razia.

    i won't flame. Grin

i agree it seems very likely they'll ally up; they're depicted together for a reason, I'm sure.

baseless speculation: perhaps Jace has some new agenda (???) and can't find any help from the other guilds, Niv being the only one reasonable enough to grant him an audience. Niv's probably got some interest in the Consortium. Heck, he's probably got an interest in planeswalking in general. They could have a very mutually beneficial relationship, but ... I dunno about Jace actually joining the guild.

i see where you're coming from--of all the U/X guilds, I'd say Jace is actually probably closest in nature to the Izzet, as I don't think he's Azorius material, nor Simic, nor Dimir.

but the concern I have here is that in Gideon's picture, you'll note he's sporting "flamey" (poor word choice perhaps) attire. In fact, he's actually wearing the Boros emblem on his belt, whereas Jace is just wearing his usual.

then again, that's a detail, from artwork, which can sometimes be misleading--i mean, it could be a moment in time before Jace parties up. maybe it'll happen in the third set. who knows?

personally, i think it makes more sense that jace would be more of a de facto member. an outsourced consultant. a friend of your dad's you call "uncle". that sort of thing.

    RE: 2/2/??? planeswalkers

Seems to make sense that we'd see Ral Zarek (obvious Izzet trappings) and Kiora Atua (lol surprise merfolk) as the unannounced PW's, BUT... with Jace 4.0 confirmed, I dunno, it seems kinda... odd that 3/4 would be blue. Then again, we don't know how many will be in [sinker].

While of course I want more details of the storyline, being a greedy greedy greedy little Vorthos, this does do a lot to satisfy a lot of the crap that's been speculated on since Hook was confirmed to be on Ravnica confirmed not to be on Ravnica confirmed to be on Ravnica. Specifically, reestablishment of guilds, appearance of Merfolk, and practically (if not officially) the shocklands. I mean, I'll concede there's still no hard evidence but it's certainly less and less likely they'll be absent with each peep we get from Wizards.

Looks like I may be buying my first boosters since... gosh, Shadowmoor?

unless my reading comprehension is failing me (as it tends to do) there appears to be an error in the OP: the guilds will have brand new keywords that will be "thematically relevant" to the previous keywords, but will not be the previous keywords themselves.

a bastardization of Ping (see above); to deal 2 damage to a creature/player via an activated ability; see Arc-Slogger, Grim Lavamancer, Psionic Entity, Orcish Artillery

maybe it's not so common heh
