I'd like to see more interaction with command zone. For example:

    Serendus, Arcane Magus
    UBR
    Creature - Wizard
    1/1

When CARDNAME comes into play, put X mystery counters on it, where X equal to the number of times you've casted CARDNAME from command zone, then Scry X.
Your instant and sorcery spells cost X less to cast.

Oooooh, love it. Add a little drawback for the black...
    How about:

Hi guys, I just stumbled over this thread and I really like what you are doing here. I took some of my favorite designs from the last few pages and made them into proxies (some are slightly reworded, designers are credited). Please let me know if you enjoy seeing this stuff, I just like making them. If you want a design made into a proxy, let me know =)

    Vryn Overlay
    Land (R)
tap symbol : Add 2 to your mana pool. Vryn Overlay deals 3 damage to you.
8, tap symbol , sacrifice Vryn Overlay: Each player draws three cards. This costs 1 less to activate for each card in an opponent's hand more than the number of cards in your hand.

Feels like two card designs stapled together. Why not stay with " tap symbol : Add 1 to your mana pool"? I love the second ability though.

    My design, would love feedback:

What I want put on a magic card most is something letting people attack themselves with their creatures. If this was on a legendary creature, that'd be even better. Something along the lines of

    RBW

    Legendary Creature - Knight

    First Strike
Other Creatures attack each turn if able.
    Creatures can attack their controllers.

    2/2

And I would be very pleased.

I was bored, so I made my two designs into cards and included yours, because it's very neat. I expanded a little on your original design, hope you don't mind. Enjoy.

EDIT: I reuploaded the cards after spellchecking Smile

Even though this was supposed to be Jace's story, it felt more like Liliana's story to me. It illustrated that she doesn't have any interest in Zendikar and , to a certain extent, why. On the other hand, Jace's motivations remain unclear. If he really feels bad for having a hand in releasing the Eldrazi, why didn't he do anything avout it until now?

He has been. It was made pretty clear that he's been doing research which is what he does best. I mean do you want Jace on the front lines with Gideon? Wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.

As for languages I'm sure the spark gives some sort of multiversal translator. Although I would imagine Jace wouldn't need it as he could just glean their language from their minds like he did with the mage ring stuff while he was in school on Vryn.

I'mn sure he did some research. And I would have loved to read about that. But most of this UR was about Liliana's motivations, not Jace's.

Don't get me wrong, I really liked the Jace-Lilianba interactions. I just feel like going from Guildpact everyday troubles to rushing to Zendikar's aid seems a little random without providing further context.

What I really want are 4 color generals. I know some people have said that it wouldn't bring anything to the table that a regular 5 color legend couldn't but I don't think that's the point. I think it could be interesting from both a flavor standpoint as well as a mechanic standpoint because these cards could be defined by the color they are missing. This could lead to very neat abilities that you wouldn't really ever see on a creature.

    'Hater of white' UBRG
    Protection from white
Whenever a opponent casts a white spell you gain 3 life

    'Hater of blue' WBRG
    Protection from blue
Whenever an opponent cast a blue spell you may draw a card

    'Hater of black' WURG
    Protection from black
Whenever an opponent casts a black spell that player discards a card

    'Hater of red' WUBG
    Protection from red
Whenever an opponent casts a red spell ~ deals three damage to that player

    'Hater of green' WUBR
    Protection from green
Whenever an opponent casts a green spell you may search your library for a basic land card and put it into your hand.

IIRC, MaRo's complaint about 4-color card design is that it ends up being about the color the card isn't instead of the four colors the card is. From that perspective, these are the worst possible four-color legend designs possible.

From my side the 'inverted mono-color' approach is more innovative than writing the same color-specific words on cards as usual:

    'First boring dude' WUBR
    Vigilance, flying, deathtouch, haste

    'Second boring dude' UBRG
    Flying, deathtouch, haste, trample

    'Third boring dude' BRGW
    Deathtouch, haste, trample, vigilance

    'Fourth boring dude' RGWU
    Haste, trample, vigilance, flying

    'Fifth boring dude' GWUB
    Trample, vigilance, flying, deathtouch

While I think that MaRo has a point, I see nothing inherently wrong with designing 4C Legends towards their excluded color. To make this more interesting, how about a design that encompasses more the greatest fear of the excluded color or a manifestation of what it tries to avoid.

    Spontaneous attempt:

    Rasheb, Greed's End 1UBRG
Legendary Creature - Djinn Wizard [4/4]
    Flying
At the beginning of your upkeep, exile the top card of your library. You lose life equal to its converted mana cost. If a nonland card was revealed this way, you may cast it without paying its mana cost.
    "You did wish for this"

(Basically the lovechild of Dark Confidant and Intet, the Dreamer (however that works). It contains aspects of each of it's colors and represents what White opposes: Chaos, Unfairness, Recklessness.)

    Or:

    Nantu, the Seventh Rite WUBR
Legendary Creature - Monk Avatar [2/3]
    Prowess
Whenever you cast a noncreature spell, target nonland, noncreature card in your graveyard gains flashback until end of turn. The flashback cost is equal to its mana cost.
"Only perfection can be repeated without flaw"

(This one is more straight forward "no creatures" opposition to green, but it allows for some interesting things with Enchantments and Planeswalker being castable with flashback too. I will admit that there is little black in this design.)

My point is, I think it is possible to design very interesting and flavorful cards even with the "exclude one color" approach.

  • posted a message on Returning Mechanics in BFZ
I think we can expect a mechanic for each major faction. This has been the trend in the last sets and seems to be state-of-the-art design in magic. So I'd guess we get an Eldrazi mechanic, one or two Ally/Freedom fighter mechanic and a Zendikar (which has a sort of personality on it's own) mechanic, probably Landfall.
I really hope they repeat the land-matters theme with spell-like effects on lands as well as a good mana sink mechanic. The return of all the "adventure world" stuff is unlikely because Zendikar just isn't the place for cave exploring right now....

Edit: Man-lands really are Zendikars thing and I'm sure we'll see some.

Nissa and Kiora's reasons are the same. Both are native Zendikari who want to save their home plane.

There is no Gideon OR Nissa. It'll definitely be both. I think we can consider them basically confirmed for the first set. That means there's one left for BFZ and two for the second set in the block. I think we can also consider Jace confirmed for some point in the block. I think if Jace shows up in the first set then Kiora will be in the second. Chandra might show up as the Red rep but I don't think she even actually knows about what happened after her duel in the Eye. Ob is also a possibility.

I also think we're at the point where we can say Gideon wont be showing up as a RW walker. I think they want to keep him as the monowhite Captain America-esque character. I mean if they didn't give him Red when he was hanging out with the Boros in the two colored block it wont make sense at any other point.

Oh yeah I forgot Kiora is a Zendikar native. That explains her involvement...
Also, I just looked up how many PW we can expect per block and we've seen 5 walkers in every Block that had them except for Zendikar, which had 6 walkers total.

EDIT: I guess we had a Jace in the core set leading up to RTR (which contained a new Jace) as well as both Jace and Chandra in the core set leading up to the original Zendikar block, both seeing a new print there. The core set before INN block left out Liliana but included Garruk, both seen in the first set of the following block. No real consistency there, but I guess printing a new Nissa and/or Gideon in BFZ does not seen as crazy as I thought.

Is anyone elso surprised how many planeswalkers are involved in the BFZ story line?
From the images tweeted from SDCC and past URs we know that at least 7 planeswalker are taking part:

    - Nissa (who wants to save her home plane)
    - Gideon (who wants to save Zendikar and its people)
    - Sorin (who wants to eliminate the Eldazi thread before it could affect Innistrad)
    - Kiora (for some reason we will hopefully learn in the following URs)
    - Ugin (who want to stop the Eldrazi and investigate Nicol Bolas' involvement)
    - Jace (who is likely dragged into this by Gideon; we don't know yet what his connection with Ugin is)
    - Nahiri (who is looking for Sorin to help her seal the Eldrazi once again)

Who knows, maybe even Chandra shows up to apologize for releasing the ELdrazi in the first place (that doesn't seem very Chandra though). All in all, there are a Lot of planeswalking characters who will have a story apperiance if not physical cards in the BFZ block.
This leads to the next question: which planeswalker will get a card in BFZ block? I assume we will see 3 walkers in the block (based on past large and small sets). With so many planeswalkers involved, I can hardly imagine Wizards printing a yet unknown planeswalker, so who will it be?

    - Nissa?
We have new art for her, but i can't see them printing back-to-back Nissas unless there is some major charcater development like with Sarkhan in Tarkir block.
    - Gideon?
Same as Nissa really. Maybe as a Boros walker, as he's been described before?
    - Sorin?
He just saw a printing in KTK that already seemed uninspired, so I doubt it.
    - Kiora?
My guess is she reappears on a card in BFZ, with new awesome bident-related powers... whatever that means.
    - Ugin?
I doubt it. He just appeared and nothing really happened to warrant a change in his skills.
    - Jace?
Even more unlikely than Nissa and Gideon, as he is not (yet) a major character in the Eldrazi storyline.
    - Nahiri?
She is probably needed to reseal the Eldrazi. I really really hope she makes her comeback in BFZ block although I don't know if BFZ supports enough equipment for her equipment-matters-theme. Maybe some "rock bending" type skills?

If I had to guess to save my life I'd say we'll get Kiora(U/G), Nahiri(W) and Gideon(W/R) OR Nissa(G/?) but that would leave out one color. I also have the faintest feeling that someone is going to die in this storyline...

Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

After spending the best part of two hours digging through this thread, I can savely say that this is one of the most awesomely interesting and hilarious projects here. My flat mate just got home and found me slumped deep in my armchair, deliriously giggling at some of your creations. My personal favorites were the crazy ones poste by ParadoxRegained. I nearly peed twice.

So we get a new Seismic Assault and a Coastal Piracy for artifacts that comes with a Bitterblossom attached.

    VERY nice cards.
I could easily see both being played.

Ive read this comparison a few times now, but it's really NO Coastal Piracy, as you cannot draw more than one card per controller's combat phase. It has a "one or more" restriction just like Sidisi, Brood Tyrant.
Nevertheless, it's a great card for its cost and will definetly see lots of EDH play. Shame it's not an artifact itself, though.

Vortex seems sweet. red is getting some love.

I think EDH players follow the same basic psychographs as in "normal" magic: Johnny, Timmy and Spike. However, I have seen people acting very different depending on ahat format they're playing. I'm leaning towards Johnny ans Spike when playing 60-card decks, but in EDH I'm a huge Timmy.

EDIT: For those unaware of the psychographs: http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/mr11b

I am very surprised to see how many people are willing to throw huge amounts of money to preorder a completely unknown set. Yes, MMA1 was a value set and yes, it is likely to be of good value this time around. But do we know? Someone in this thread wrote how he/she is regretting not preordering 24 boxes of MMA2015 for $200 each. I know everyone is trying to make a good deal, but if you are willing to spend $5000 on this set I would assume you at least wanted to know what you are buying beforehand.

I hope MMA2015 will be a success but if it isn't, I can already see many people regretting to preorder an unknown product and I can't really say that I would feel very sorry for them.

If the set turns out to be crap, you can just cancel your preorders.

I'm the regret guy. Also, $5k isn't a ton of money to me, I make good money and while $5k is a lot of cash, it's not so much that it would make me weep if I lost it all. I'd punch something, laugh at my own dumb ass, and get on with life. Easy come, easy go.

I didn't know it was so easy to cancel the preorders stateside because most secondary market sales are done privately here in Europe and sometimes there are problems getting you money back. If you can cancel after the spoilers it's not so much of a problem, I agree.

As for the money: Just the mention of loosing $5000 made my little student wallet scream in terror and hide under my bed. But I guess not everyone's a student.

I run a similar list with and one of my MVPs is Angel of Serenity. I very rarely lose once i got her going. I also love Progenitor Mimic because it does silly things. My favorite game of EDH ever played incuded both of those.

I really like your Mastery of the Unseen for Roon, never thought of manifest. Thats some serious tech, especially in my list. I run only 6 non-permanents, one of them being Primal Surge
