Greetings!
I'm looking to get a new deck for my modern plays. Would like something that has a good play vs aggro and not bad vs Jund/Tron. How would you say - which build of UWR is better for that purposes?
My friend played ANT a lot and told that it's not really favorable vs Jund: they can discard you if you are not lucky to begin with a leyline and they can kill Unlife. Nevertheless, they have pretty good clock.
I'll check affinity, but it seems for me that it shouldn't be truly favored with Jund. 55/45 maybe... Or do I miss something?
And thank you all for advice! If anybody has other ideas - I'll be happy to read.
Nice advice, thanks! Maybe anything that's under the radar?
I would like to know your opinion on RG Land Destruction deck. I've seen EFro got nice results with it and some people performed 5-0 in mtgo league, so it's not a bad deck. But how it will perform vs Jund, Burn and Tron? As for me - it's better than Affinity for that meta (which is the next deck that's I'm testing).
There are a lot of Junds and Burns in my local meta. Also there are some Tron players. I would like to find a deck that's favorable against all of them and is not a total loser against everything else. Currently I see RG Land-destruct as a good choice. My friend advised me to try some GW Aggro (Finks, Liege, PtE, etc.), but I doubt it can ever be favorable vs Tron. Can you please suggest anything else?
p.s. our team has a good cardpool so budget is not a problem.
Hi!
I'm playing Jund currently, and it's fine. But I feel that I need something else. I would like get a deck that will counter Jund's troublesome match-ups. Just if local meta shifts - I can get my "other" deck and have good chances of winning. Budget is not a problem.
Hi all!
I'm thinking of playing this deck, but can't actually test it before investing. Can you, please, tell me which are the worst match-ups? And, precisely how does it act versus tron and affinity?
Hi all!
In nearly every top8 of local tournaments I see burn, affinity, twin and/or jund. Is there any deck that performs well versus all of them? And, anyways - what would you suggest to play in such a meta?
Thanks!
Jund or Junk Midrange seem perfect for you. Other than those, there also is Grixis Control. These are all Midrange style decks that have disruption, a somewhat quick clock, very few poor matchups, mind-intensive, and very competitive.
If you are interested in something like Twin or Junk Company, there are those as well. Actually it seems like you're pretty flexible in your choices. You just don't seem to like all-in Combo or ultra quick Aggro.
Just as an aside, Burn vs. Soul Sister is terrible, but you shouldn't worry about those. A Burn player probably has a 1% chance or smaller of running into Soul Sisters unless their meta just has a lot of people playing the deck.
Thanks!
I've already tried Grixis Control and it seemed like... "not my deck". Couldn't say what was wrong. I like Twin a lot, but wanted to try something else. Junk looks good - will try it out =)
Hi everyone!
I would like to get some help. Previously kind people helped me, but now my preferences have changed =)
I'm playing MTG for more than 10 years, but never played eternal formats (played a lot of sealed and drafts, lots of limited Grand Prix, sometimes played standard). So I'm familiar with most of Modern mechanics and cards, but not with decks and synergies.
Requirements: Interactive. I wish to actually play, respond to my opponent's actions and do some "brainjob". Ability to control game state. By any given way - counterspells, hand disruption, board wiping, etc... Have a clock. My opponent must know that if he doesn't do something, he can lose very quickly. It can be a combo win-con, or just goyf and cat on my side. Anything that makes my opponent be scared of losing game quickly. No awful match-ups (vs t1/t2 decks, I don't need "unhateable" deck). It's pain for me to look at Burn vs Soul Sisters games. Mind-intensive. I enjoy thinking and planning my game, thinking through possible opponent plays, possible topdecks, etc. And I hate "solitaire"-like games. Competitive. Not necessarily tier 1 deck, but it's good if someone already made Grand Prix Top 8 with a deck.
Bonuses: Card filtering. I like to choose what shall I play in the next five minutes. Not popular. I understand that any good-performing deck will quickly go popular, so I'm writing it here for people to not be scared to offer "rogue" decks. I do love rogue decks and brews.
Budget: I have goyfs, all fetch- and shocklands, most of modern staples, etc... So budget is not limited.
I personally think the best deck for control over cards in hand is Esper Control. Sure, it's very slow to get off the ground, but that's cause it's true control (unlike UWR, which is counter-burn). Checklist:
Interactive - Control is the most interactive deck archetype to play.
Ability to control game state - Again, this is all Control looks to do.
Have a clock - Well, after about turn 7-8, they know that the game is about to tilt in your favor, because your deck is designed for the long game.
No awful matchups - Ideally, you're keeping them out of a board state, so no bad matchups. A misplay will make any matchup bad, however, so beware.
Mind-intensive - Knowing what to counter is a really difficult thing to master. Also, control is never a solitaire game the way Eggs used to be.
And it hits the bonus slots too!
Blue!
Card Filtering - Ideally, we'd have Dig to help here, but Think Twice, Esper Charm, and Rev are good ways to pick what you play.
Not Popular - It's been pretty much written off since Wafo-Tapa abandoned it for UWR.
Tempo Playstyle - Just slot in a GoST or two in the sideboard and watch your deck morph into midrange.
Out-of-nowhere wins - Nobody ever expects an EOT Zenith for the win.
Thanks! Seems nice. I've read the primer you linked. Will try tomorrow with friends. But I've checked it's presence in competitive magic (GP, PT) and found just nothing for this year. If that deck is good, why doesn't people play/win with it?
Main deck choices that help vs jund are spell snare and dismember. Post board blood moon can just win against certain draws they have. Huntmaster gives us value against their "grind." Me (and at least one other I think) play threads of disloyalty to steal bobs and goyfs. Board out some number of denials as lilly is the only juicy target. And don't ever board out thought scours and mandrills because you are taking away one of your best lines to victory, T1 scour, T2 mandrills, hold up snare for terminate/their goyf at that point you just win.
Seems interesting, but how do you play when you don't have spellsnare? Can sitting on a simic charm (hexproof) consistently create me a win?
About blood moon - does it really hurts them? As for me - any good Jund player won't be greedy and will go for some basics. Am I wrong? I don't have enough exp. with that deck, sorry.

LOL no. Teferi doesn't move any cards. He just restricts opponents from putting new ones into the stack.
