Hey guys. Quick question— I apologize if this isn't the place to ask/if I'm interrupting.
I recently finished building Twin, and I got to play two events with it before it got banned out...so I'm looking for something else competitive. I switched over to U/R Delver for now, but I'm not convinced yet that it's fantastic, although it's definitely okay enough to hold me over until I figure out what I'm going to do. Anyway, I was wondering if any of you switched over from Twin in the past. A couple guys at my LGS are trying hard to sell me on it, but I'm not so sure I'd be a huge fan of the playstyle— although I do like the mindgame aspect of making an opponent play around a one-hit KO. Could this be a good choice for me? I'm gonna wait until after the PT to buy into something, but this is what I think I'm leaning towards.
When playtesting i found Stormchaser Mage to be better than Swiftspear as it comes through more often without the need to clear a flooded board. Apostle's Blessing also performed really well to protect a delver of Abrupt Decay, Bolt, etc.
Looking forward to playing this deck!
I am gonna use your exact list because I have the majority of the cards after the Twin banning. I finished Twin a week ago. At least this is gonna let me still play with the hundreds of dollars of cards I ordered until I figure out what I'm doing next...maybe it's still this! I'm excited about trying Stormchaser.
Kamhal, do you have your manabase posted anywhere for your current build? Sorry if I overlooked it, but I like the look of what you have and I think I want to start with it.
Now I'm kinda leaning towards switching over to Mardu dragons. It should cost me about $180-200, which isn't TOO expensive in the world of Magic. I love the way my deck plays now, but I'm getting the sense that my local meta is getting more competitive.
I guess another option is to keep my deck the way it is and build another one strictly for competitive play. What deck has a polar opposite playstyle compared to the kind of Mardu I've been running? Something like Esper control?
I lied. Switching the Champions for the Dragon Fodders was a horrible mistake. I know that you generally don't want the mono one drops in a deck like Mardu but I felt like it was extremely rare that I couldn't cast it when I wanted to. Gonna put it back for now.
2-1-1 tonight, losing to a copy of Martin Dang's deck, a draw to a mono-white lifegain in which the match never went past game 1 because I'm dumb and didn't concede to sideboard which would've won the round easily for me, and two wins against terrible jank decks.
The Soulfires were actually ended in at the end of the night when I was able to trade for them. I think I like the deck better now, I just didn't have the best performance tonight.
Tymaret is actually a special case for my local meta, because people LOVE Deflecting Palm and he gives me an out from it. He should absolutely be sideboarded in a deck that doesn't have one, though, since I never really use him over a Butcher.
Mmmmm, that's definitely something to consider. Is there anything you could think of that would be a straight up replacement for the Bloodsoaked Champion for now until I figure out what I'm going to do with it?
My apologies if there was another thread for this:
This deck actually 4-0'd FNM two weeks ago and 3-1'd last week with a loss in round 4 due to a misplay on my part. (Not exactly hyper-competitive) I LOVE playing Butcher, so I want to keep that card in there, but I know for sure that I can make this deck better. For example, I was looking at the competitive thread and nobody seemed to be running Bloodsoaked. Any help would be much appreciated!
My other two ideas were throwing together something from the Shaman primer, or maybe doing B/R vampires. I used to play vampires a few years ago and had some fun with that.
Soul Sisters is $120-200 or so, depending on if you do anything with nonbasic lands. Burn has a terrible time against it, plus it looks like a ton of fun to play with lots of triggers and interactions. I think infect is probably not a great matchup, but it's certainly playable.
There are also various budget Zoo lists available in the budget Zoo primer, going as low as $50.
Thanks for the reply. Mono W lifegain used to be my favorite archetype back in the day, and it was actually what I was considering. I'm afraid of the infect matchup, though. Would maybe sideboarding in something like Felidar Sovereign help against it? I don't wanna spend the money on the deck and have it useless in the local meta, haha.
My LGS is switching FNM to a Modern tournament in a couple weeks in anticipation for MM2, so I figure that now is the time to finally get into the format. It seems like for the most part, the decks there aren't very expensive...I believe one person has a fairly expensive infect deck, but everyone else I've talked to has either gotten together a budget infect, or budget burn.
Neither of those interest me, but I'd love some suggestions as to what to play against them. I would like to keep it somewhere within the range of $100-$200, as I don't want to have an AMAZING deck that just flat out wrecks the players I play with. On the other hand, I don't want to have something totally janky that gets me crushed.
I'm pretty open minded to any suggestions. Thanks!

I may replace the second Phoenix with Regent, since I feel like it's very rare that I am happy I have it in my hand.
