    Grand Prix Dallas/Fort Worth Report

    Match record 5-3

Round 1: Mono Green Tron 0-2. Neither game did the tron player have natural tron but he did manage turn 4 tron each game. He also managed turn 4 Ugin both games to wipe my board and end each game. In game 2 I was able to get him 1 swing away from death before he top decked Ugin for the game, he stated this after the match. I sided in Harmonic and damping sphere and took out diffusion, dismembers, and a coco.

Round 2: Titanshift 2-1. I didnt have a good enough starting hand in game 1 to compete with the combo and being interacted with along the way, I lost a few slivers to bolts. Game 2 he found an Obstinate Baloth but it did very little for him as I found flying and countered a scapeshift with warping wail. Game 3 a Collected Company landed a Sedge and Shedder onto a field with a Dregscape and Sinew and swung 14 at his life total of 15. Sided in Syphon and Warping wails, and took out dismember, diffusion and one other card (cant remember right now).

Round 3: Merfolk 1-2. I got off to a bad start from the get go. The only damage my opponent took was self inflicted by a horizon land. Game 2 was the opposite of game 1, I only suffered damage from a fetch and shock. Game 3, here is where I error-ed. I played too aggressively during game 3 and was beaten by vial tricks. I had Sedge, Dregscape and Darkheart, I went to cast a sinew from hand and in response he casts dismember on Sedge, I responded by sacing to darkheart, after that I unearthed it and activated my vial sitting on 2 to drop another Sinew into play and then proceeded to combat. After attackers were declared, he activated his vial to drop a harbinger of the tides into play and attempted to bounce Sedge, I saced him again to Darkheart and then he blocked and attempted to kill Darkheart, I saced it. He took 4 from dregscape then on his turn he dismembered a sinew and swung lethal.

Round 4: Jund 2-0. This guy was pretty salty sitting down he'd been frustrated pretty hard already. I hid my strategy on the first turn leading on godless shrine into vial. Turn 2 I dropped the bomb on him with a cavern. That shock was the only damage I took that game. Game 2 was similar, I only suffered self-inflicted damage, a fetch, a dismember and a shock. I dont remember much of this match it was over too fast and the guy was insanely salty to lose to slivers on the mighty jund.

Round 5: Prismatic Omen Scapeshift 2-1. Game 1 was very fast as my opponent had to mulligan down. I took 3 swings to fell the tree. Game 2 I was not sure what he was on but I had an idea because of the lands he played. He played a prismatic omen and was able to interact by lightning helixing a crucial creature. He was able to scapeshift for the win with exactly 18 damage after I shocked myself to 18. Game 3, I was able to warping wail an anger of the gods to keep my predatory, sinew and gemhide in play, I followed it up the next turn by coco into more fun and into a win.

Round 6: The Rock 2-1. Game 1 I won thru 3 scavenging ooze activations. A big swing of 10+ ended game 1. In game 2 the rock did its thing, lots of cheap removal and big dudes, I dealt no damage. Game 3 was a marathon. I fought thru 7 scooze activations and flipped 4 coins from frenetic (2/4 correct, opponent insisted on flipping the coin while I called it). I errored in allowing an early galerider to die and almost gave the match away, but I finally top decked another galerider just as he took me down to 4 life.

Round 7: BW Zombies 2-1. So this guys leads on swamp gravecrawler and I immediately thought it was hogaak. I was very thankful in turn 2 when he dropped unclaimed territory naming zombie. I rolled him pretty hard in game 1, but he did get some things going, he isnt a tribal deck in the sense of lords and getting big dudes, all of his zombies had either etb or dies triggers to gain life, cause the loss of life or both. Game 2he set up a combo of sorts where he had an undying geralfs messenger saced it to carrion feeder have it undie and trigger like 4 other zombies on the ways in and out. I remembered to bring Syphon in for game 3, dumb move not bringing them in for game 2. I ended game 3 with 47 life because zombies dont fly and I was throwing 10+ damage his way each turn and gaining it all back.

Round 8: mono red prowess 0-2. I lost on turn 5 of game 1 due to a non-functional hand, a bad keep. I lost game 2 on turn 3. On said turn 3, he had 2 monastery swiftspears, cast manamorphose, cast a second, cast a third, cast a bolt targeting me, cast a lava spike targeting me, then swung for 12 and I was at exactly 18 life and had no blockers.

Looking back, there was nothing I could do about rounds 1 and 8. I really wish I could get round 3 back though. I played far too aggrssively in that game 3 and I should have backed off. I didnt see any of the top tier decks, hogaak, phoenix, humans or infect, thankfully. I spoke to Bryan on Sunday, he faced 3 infect decks on day 1, so I feel like I dodged a bullet there. I look forward to the SCG Open in August that will also be held in DFW, but until then there is a few more local IQ's and GenCon to look forward to.

Let me preface this by saying we wont get those specific cards due to formatting issues. MaRo specifically confirmed a long time ago they wouldnt go back to All slivers get, it would be sliver creatures you control get...

That being said, A new Crystalline at 2 cmc would be enough to take sedge out of the list and change the deck to no longer require swamps and allow us better access to green and coco. Hibernation I see as a 2 of in main possibly replacing the flex striking and sentinel I currently run. Also with Hibernation main I can see running Syphon main to hedge the life loss.

Over the weekend, MaRo was quoted live on twitch stating Modern Horizons was built as a love letter to the time spiral block. How much does this increase our chances of getting new slivers?

Interesting, what makes you think Martyr is a bad match-up? I have never lost a martyr match, a few games yes but never a match.

I recently went back to having a striking sliver main in my list to deal a little better with all the creatures coming in my local area, I would recommend it highly if you dont already run one. It saved me at least once Monday night. My updated list is in my signature as usual.

    Report from Monday:

Round 1, 2-1 vs tron. Tron opponent stumbled in game 1 and I managed a turn 4 kill. Sided out 2 diffusion, 2 dismember and striking sliver, brought in 2 harmonic 2 damping sphere and 1 telekinetic. Game 2, mulled to 6, got ugin'd on turn 4 after stumbling myself. Game 3, tron opponent never found tron and died turn 5.

Round 2, 2-1 vs spirits. Lousy game 1 with only 2 shock lands all game. Brought in 2 syphon and telekinetic, sided out 3 diffusion. Found a syphon in game 2 and flipped the game on its head. Game 3 earned an achievement, got all 4 sedges in play .

Round 3, 2-1 vs elves. Got blown out in game 1. Brought in 2 syphon and 2 chalice. Did the blowing out in game 2. Game 3 was intense! Opponent got all 4 clan callers into play, I was down 20-3 and was facing 12 elves 3/3 or better. Cast a coco and hit the perfect 2 cards... striking sliver and syphon sliver. I managed to block advantageously and gain life enough to start killing elves and stabilize my life total. The following turn dropped a Lord and I swung with my fliers for 21.

    Draw in final round.

I know a guy in the Facebook group has been trying that strategy vs TITI, but I dont know how its working for him as he doesnt post event reports. I personally think its a bit slow as well. Shields of Velis Vel is basically the same thing but 1 mana and instant, it can even be cast via Sliver Hive and found via Homing sliver. I prefer to remove the TITI instead of allowing it to transform, hence my board plan includes bringing in Warping Wail and keeping Dismember in.

I triumphed vs izzet phoenix Monday night. In games 2 and 3 I found opening hand chalices and that was enough. Warping Wail is also important as it removes titi and counters anger of the gods. Chalice on 1 hurts their ability to draw cards thoroughly, however they do run abrade.

    How I sided: +2 chalice +2 wail +2 syphon +1 darkheart, -1 vial -3 coco -2 blur, -1 sentinel

There is only 1 person in my local meta playing whir and I have not played vs them yet. I have no frame of reference to speak on that match-up as of now. Whir being strong kind of draws me in 2 different directions as I cut the 3rd harmonic side for a 2nd chalice of the void.

Striking is not really necessary right now. A 4th Diffusion will do you good. Legion and Hivelord are purely win-more cards. Two-headed is a slot that could be used for other things, Cautery Sliver maybe. Opaline is simply not good enough even in side board.

    SCG Regional Report
    246 players - 9 rounds of swiss

I would like to preface this by stating that had it not been for my friend who rode with me doing well early on in this event I would have dropped after round 4. However, since he was sitting 3-1 I continued to play and changed my whole day.

Round 1 - Dredge 0-2. In game 1, I ended up mulliganing to 4 cards and forced to keep a 0 land hand even scrying another creature to the bottom. I drew a land on turn 1 but never saw land 2 and died to 16 power on the board on turn 3. Game 2 I brought in 2 Relic, 2 Warping wail and 2 Syphon. This was a bit more of a game but I failed to see any sideboard cards. On turn 3 I had 2 3/3 lords removed by a conflagrate that pretty much ended my chances.

Round 2 - Jund 0-2. I shuffled extremely long before playing this round to try to avoid the land issues on round 1 however it was not meant to be and I struggled again to find balance. Game 1 I kept a 7 card hand with 4 lands, 1 vial, 1 predatory and 1 sinew; I never drew another spell, only lands. Game 2 I brought in 2 relic, 2 warping wail, 2 frenetic. I kept a 6 card hand with a breeding pool and godless shrine and creatures; never saw another land.

Round 3 - Rock 1-2. This match was lost on a misplay/mistake by me in game 2. I curved out excellently in game 1 and killed on turn 5. Same side plan as jund the match prior. In game 2, I was well behind with only a mana sliver, diffusion, predatory in play vs a treetop village finks scooze and kalitas. I landed a frenetic and followed up with a sedge and managed to stabilize the board at 1 life. My opponent had 1 out, damnation, he cast it and I started flipping coins, I managed to save all but the diffusion sliver. At this point my opponent is beside himself thinking its unfair that frenetic exists. I assume its safe and swing out the next turn and drop a predatory and galerider. On my opponents next turn he removes both my untapped slivers and activated treetop village to remove my last point of life. I failed to take the man land into account. Game 3 I was stuck on 2 lands the entire game and could not cast half the cards in hand because no gold lands.

Round 4 - Storm 1-2. At this point I'm just playing for pride just hoping to fill time while my buddy is doing well. I got game 1 due to opponent on land screw. Games 2 and 3 were typical storm games where I didnt see enough sideboard help and could not compete. I did get to dismember 2 things in the ice in the 2nd and 3rd games.

    Here comes the turn around...

Round 5 - Storm 2-0. Neither game did my opponent cast more than 4 spells, his deck failed him and he very likely didnt have an optimized version of storm. Really didnt have any resistance in this match.

Round 6 - Opponent no show. Free win.

Round 7 - Titan shift 2-0. In game 1 he shocked twice to help me finish a turn 4 kill, I curved out perfectly Galerider - sinew - sedge - kill. Brought in syphon darkheart and warping wail from side. Ga,me 2 I saw both darkhearts and the opponent found 2 valakuts; however I held up coco mana thru turn 4 and a vial on 2 with a sedge in play andf on his turn 5 end step cast coco landing a sedge and blur then vialed in a sinew. I untapped and swung for 19 with him at 17 and no blockers.

Round 8 - jund 2-0. Game 1 curved out perfectly into a turn 5 kill thru some removal. Same board plan as earlier jund match. Game 2 was a good game! Back and forth we traded blows, I eventually landed a frenetic and was able to vial things in to kill his massive board of 3 goyfs and 2 bloodbraids down to a single goyf. It came down to this, he swung in with a goyf while I had tapped out and had lethal on the crack back and he took me to 3. He had but one chance to cast damnation and hope I missed a bunch of flips. He cast the damnation, I cast the warping wail I had in hand.

Round 9 - eldrazi & taxes 2-1. Game 1 was very strange, I dropped a hive on turns 1 and 2 and cast darkheart onto an empty board with his basic plains. Opponent paths the darkheart and when I find a land he scooped, I assume he was on a 1 lander and couldnt deal with me being up 2 lands. I at this point still had no idea what he was doing so I chose not to sideboard. Game 2 his plan became apparent when he dropped a turn 2 leonin arbitor and started ghost quartering and field of ruining my lands. I was still able to knock him to 1 life before succumbing in game 2. Game 3 I chose to again not sideboard as I had nothing for taxes style decks. We ended up in a weird situation where the ground was locked up so I couldnt attack since I didnt have galerider but he had a restoration angel so I was taking 3 turn. He cast a ghostly prison and passed. I had to wait a few turns for a gale rider to appear and when it came I also vialed in a blur which was exactly what I needed as it gave me the mana to pay for 3 attackers allowing me to kill exactly.

So ended up 5-4 after an 0-4 beginning. Honestly I was pretty tilted after round 3 and 4. It wasnt my best moment and I know I didnt handle it well. I will have to endeavor to be better at dealing with variance going forward.

I am having a hard time keeping my expectations and imagination in check. I think we really need to keep our hopes away from expectations to avoid a precipitous let down. I remember a pretty big body blow when finding out Dominaria had no slivers. I really want to believe there will be slivers in horizons but until there is proof we should expect nothing.

Someone get on blogatog and ask Rosewater! I'm not on that social media site.
