FNM last night at a local store. Went 2-2, finished 7th out of 15.
Round 1: Burn - wrecked this match up hard. Won 2-0. CoCo was the heavy lifter here, turn 4 swing in with Sentinel and Diffusion then CoCo in 2 Sinew, next turn caste Blur and Galerider, swing 20. Game 2 was much closer but Leeching came thru in the end, him at 1 and me at 3 the attack triggers got him.
Round 2: Zoo - Had some unfortunate draws and luck in this match up. Lost 1-2. Won game one pretty easily, but that is where the fun ended. Games 2 and 3 couldn't draw anything to help and had terrible starts. I did manage to swing 21 at him in game 2 but he was able to CoCo into 2 Noble Hierarchs to block enough to live, the back swing killed me.
Round 3: Grixis Control - wrecked this match up. Won 2-0. Both games started and finished pretty much the same, lose some early slivers to spot removal but eventually wear down his defenses and swing large amounts.
Round 4: Elves - Yet another set of unfortunate draws. Lost 1-2. Won game 1 easily, but again lost control after game 1. This was one match up where I wish I had been a little more aggressive in the sideboard and adding something for the faster decks. Just really didnt have any interaction with the elves until it was too late.
I am likely going to add Striking Slivers to my sideboard for the local meta, and possibly even Frenzy... Thinking vialing Frenzy in before damage could be devastating. Thoughts?
Here is my list:
4 Galerider
4 Sinew
4 Predatory
4 Diffusion
2 Sentinel
2 Leeching
4 Manaweft
2 Blur
4 Sedge
2 Dismember
4 Collected Company
4 Aether vial
4 Mutavault
4 Sliver Hive
4 Cavern of Souls
3 Overgrown Tomb
2 Windswept Heath
1 Wooded Foothills
1 Breeding Pool
1 Forest
Fresh testing results. 3 games VS Mono Green Elves and 5 Games VS Mono Blue Tron. 3-0 Vs Elves, 4-1 Vs Blue Tron. I am running the same creatures as Zetera except 2 Leeching and 2 Sentinel. My mana base is slightly different as well.
Elves never really got up to speed, I'll partly blame that on a bad pilot. Guy was playing a deck he hadn't played much and was still learning.
Tron player was very experienced and knew his deck well, so a better test. The one lost game I got him to one before losing to mindslaver lock.
Best play of the day was against Tron. Had 4 slivers in play and a Vial on 3. He casts Ugin the spirit dragon and -2 to wipe my board. At the end of his turn vial in a Sedge. Next turn vial in a Blur, cast a Leeching and activate Mutavault. Swung in, killed Ugin, and took him to 6 from 16.
I run one Ghostflame side, and brought it in against tron. It was useful, Vialed it in once in response to Ugin. It was very satisfying.
You could add Immaculate Magistrate for a large amount of counters all at once to your warcallers. Its a strategy I use in my version. I also use Nettle Sentinels and Heritage Druids.
Has anyone come up with any interesting combos in modern with slivers?
I have been working on one for a while but its not as reliable as I need it to be, mainly because it has too many pieces in my opinion. I recently remembered a second one as well. I'd like opinions on these.
The idea being to tap slivers for mana to cast others drawing cards and casting the entire deck then sacrificing the dormant with the firewake ability and attack all out. The intruder alarm keeps untapping everything when a creature enters.
Combo 2:
Virulent Sliver
Mirrorweave
The idea here is to put out an army of creatures and mirrorweave the virulent since the poisonous 1 stacks each sliver produces a poison counter per creature on the board. With mirrorweave being an instant it can be done before damage, too.
