What a fantastic set. I was already in love with the setting and lore (and squirrels!) but this is just the icing on the cake. Takes me back to my Fallen Empire days!
So much of Unstable feels like things that are just slightly out of black border, and I'm glad of it. So much of the previous sets were one-note jokes that didn't hold up over time, but these could easily work in most playgroups with only mild grumbling.
I'm hoping this Un set designed a bit differently than the previous ones. Those had some way out designs, but not a lot of cards that you could slide into regular decks to add a bit of wackiness. That's what I'd love from an Un set.
Aww I'm a tiny bit dissapointed that they didn't reprint any of the "old dinosaurs" with new typeline in this.
Oh well. Might still be a very fun product.
That would have been a great idea. Wish WOTC would consider things like that more often.
My local LGS and the used CD/DVD shop have done the 3/$10 deal for a while now. Most B&Ms have been past the $4 mark for a while now (Target is usually $4.19, Meijer $4.99 and Toys R US at $5.99).
I'll occasionally throw in a pack when shopping at Target, but otherwise I try to stick with the locally owned shops.
Leaks are not good as such, but they are better than how absolutely terrible WotC's own preview approaches are. The extremely short window of previews, the tendency to heavily frontload the vast majority of interesting reveals to cover for how few exciting cards most sets actually contain, the sanctimonious attitude toward negative player feedback, all of it, often leaves players enjoying leaks and unofficial spoilers more than the official process. WotC needs to tighten up their procedures to limit leaks, sure, but they also need to work on how official spoilers are released.
I really agree with this comment here. I know the staff
at WOTC get disappointed by the leaks stealing their thunder, but they've had 25 damn years to figure out better ways of doing hype and they can't get it right.
The Mirrorpool leak is the one that really bugs me. There was an amazing amount of hype and buzz going around for the new colorless mana symbol (which I love), and they just let the arguments rage on, creating strife in the community that really didn't need to happen. They could have easily embraced the hype and made it their own.
I don't agree with the dude stealing the uncut sheet, or the people that released the godbook, but nor do I think of leakers as puppy-kicking baby-eaters either.
Low level stuff can immediately go into standard product where it fits flavor-wise. New art and all that.
Mid-level stuff into supplemental products, maybe one or two in each deck of a Duel Deck package. Nothing crazy, but something nice to help sell the product.
High level stuff in a masters product.
After a while, you could start doing all of them at Masterpiece rarity in standard products, especially the dual lands.
It's weird that people feel betrayed by contraptions being silver bordered. If you've ever tried your hand at the contraption riddle, you know that it just doesn't really work. It can be forced, but not in any kind of an elegant way. Silver border is where contraptions belong. I hope they make their money back on this.
I assume they are the same people who are SO MAD about this.
I'd be a little bothered to be honest. I know they're not putting Phelps and a damn shark in the same tank, but something like two different tanks at an aquarium side by side and comparing their speeds? Sure, I'd accept that. But not a CGI shark. There's a level of exaggeration that people are willing to accept and this would be over that line.
But onto Unstable, I am a little disappointed that contraptions are being done in silver border. After the letdown of Kaladesh, it makes me wonder how much better it would have been with contraptions instead of energy.
But on the plus side, the new guilds look amazing, as does the art. I've been getting very bored with Magic art lately (don't care if it's digital or not, it just all looks the same) so I love to see this style.
And if the lands are borderless, I would probably see myself buying a lot of these. Hoping for no 1/2 power/toughness creatures this time, that was something that really turned me off Unhinged.
Here's hoping contraptions do well enough that they can transition to black border and for plenty of squirrels.
Love to see all this non-basic love. I'm really digging the whole desert matters them. I always thought the idea that Zendikar tried to sell of "lands matter" should have meant things like this, instead of Landfall.
Yes, I love that WOTC can laugh at themselves. This type of silliness is perfect: it's actually playable but you wouldn't want it in black border.

Very excited to see dinosaurs finally getting their chance to shine in this game.

So do I, and I love the flavor text.
And the foils will be pretty bright, really hoping to find one.
