I currently play Nekusar, Selvala and Samut, and I'm willing to buy new decks. I already decided on a Jhoira historic deck and a Varina zombies deck, but then I started thinking on a new, different deck, to add to my collection.
I was wondering about an Orzhov deck, but then I realized I wanted something political to have fun while still being a decent deck. I have been wanting to build a Mardu vampire deck for some time also, and while the idea for this one was to have Licia at the helm, I thought I could combine both decks with Mathas and then have a Mardu political deck with a little bit of extra vampire flavor. Now that Mardu was the color combination choice, I realized Queen Marchesa was an option as well.
So that's it: I want to build an interesting and fun to play Mardu deck. The "vampire flavor" part will be just that, an extra. So long story short, I want to know your thoughts on this and help me pick a commander: Marchesa, Mathas, or should I really go back to Orzhov and try something else? Maybe I'm missing an Orzhov or Mardu political commander (or partners) that will create fun games...
I've been playing Standard for like three years now. Before that, I played Magic until Torment, so most cards in Modern are like a mystery to me, besides from the ones that see Commander play. I love Standard, but usually when a deck dominates the format, it gets boring, and I need new things to try. So yeah, I want to start with Modern.
Cards I own? Not really a problem here. I'm missing too many but I plan on getting the cards I need in some months, and I'm ready to make the investment. Obviously, I'd prefer to avoid excessive costs.
What do I like? Black and blue, specially the former. Discard, land destruction, black control, suicide black decks. I like more or less all archetypes, but maybe control and midrange more than aggro. I like combo too, but I fear it's too risky.
Some time ago I started to build Ad Nauseam. I love the colors and I like the combo, but now I feel that I'd rather play with something more interactive so I can get to know the environment before started playing combo.
8-Rack seems like a great deck, but my issue is that I understand it's not really competitive. Apart from that one, Grixis Death's Shadow and Dredge look like decks I'd like to play. Maybe old faeries decks, Merfolk could be interesting As I said, I love black, I love Liliana, I like discarding and black control rocks for me. Considering that I don't know much about Modern, it would be better to play a deck with a good learning curve, as I know some decks are really hard to master.
What I'd rather not play? Burn, Affinity, anything Eldrazi, mono white, mono green.
For now, I'd play mainly LGS tournaments and FNM, and for what I've been told, the Modern scene in my LGS is quite competitive.
Well, many people are starting to follow the WotC/MTGO ban list for Commander, both duel and multiplayer. As more LGS join the trend, blue mages everywhere keep crying. I just finished to create my first EDH deck with blue so I'm kinda sad too.
Now that Ponder, Preordain and Brainstorm have been banned, what cards will you put in your deck to replace them? Are we only considering Opt, Serum Visions and maybe Portent? What are your thoughts on the options?
I opened possibly the best pool I ever had in a prerelease: three mythics! I got Samut (from Amonkhet), Nicol Bolas and the Locust God. I really wanted to go white because I had like five angels (including two copies of the rare angel) but I couldn't NOT play one of these mythics. I finally went Grixis, and the round I lost was because of mana screwing. So yeah, it was risky, but worth it. As much as I loved both Kaladesh and Aether Revolt, I didn't really like their prereleases, seemed like limited was... kind of limited. But HOU limited was fun for me, and everyone seemed to have fun too.
Vial Smasher makes sense but banning these other blue cards... come on, is this going to become again a paradise for people who like to complain about every card they don't play? I dislike a lot more when my opponent plays any Eldrazi titan that when they use Brainstorm, Ponder and Preordain.
Whatever. I don't know where you live, but here in Spain most LGS have started to follow the WOTC banlist, so I'm not happy. At least they banned The Fierce.
I like the name, I like the art, I like the idea, but it looks weak. If it was BB it could see a little more play, but it would die quickly too. Anyway, I like it, and I'll try to play it even if it's only in EDH.
This sucks. Not the cards, that I rather not see in detail, but the leaks. So many cards leaked, in such bad quality, just before spoiler season of the earlier set. Months in advance... Come on!
I played BR zombies for some months before Amonkhet, and you can't imagine how happy I was when I saw monoblack was a real thing. I built the deck this week and played yesterday: loved it and found it very competitive against different decks. I was really impressed at how I could manage to win against hard control UR Dynavolt Tower. That said, it's kind of sad the deck won't last, as we're going to lose half the deck with the stupid rotation.
I put a couple of Disposses on the SD to fight Marvel and the Tower, but there was not a single Marvel in the Standard Showdown yesterday. I guess people really hates the deck
BFZ and OGW should have been rotated out a long time ago. But no, they linked them with SOI and EMN and thus made Eldritch Moon be legal for just 12 months. Well, just like every second set on the second block from now on: a great idea. Two rotations per year, with every block being legal 24 months would be the easiest, more logical and best option.
Anyway, I don't think it will be the metamorphosis MaRo will talk about. My bet would be some sort of Core Sets, but I really don't know.

This is a really bad idea. I liked having Masterpieces in a set. This is just wrong, and neither art nor the frames are really outstanding.
RB seems really interesting, Pokerkingdave. I didn't know the deck, and now I'm even more confused because there's a new option.
I think as you do, idSurge, maybe Grixis Death Shadow is what I should try. I really pick the best options always, as it's a really expensive deck!
