A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

As a GBx player, I find Wren interesting as a 1 or 2 of in the 75. How interesting. It's the first card as a midrange player to generate a little excitement.

Some people made great points in the previous posts. A lot of arguments in the past said, "...Wait for Horizons, it'll fix a ton".

As a midrange player, I've found this set extremely disappointed. It feels like the entire archetype was overlooked. Wren gives me pause for the first time in this set for midrange. The Force is ok but could be a 1 of sideboard or just an underwhelming card. Maybe it ends up being an all-star, I don't know. Horizon lands appear more beneficial to the linear decks and less to the fair decks that care about their life total.

What's everyone still hoping for? Me, it's Counterspell and some more zombies (Carrion Feeder would be a great reprint, but I'm up for anything).

At this point. A playable ******* midrange card.

So, for Peatland I don't think it's good news for Jund or Rock.

I'm wondering if Jund Shadow could play a playset of this. It furthers the plan and there's no Gurmag delving. 4x Bauble, 4x Wraiths and 4x Horizons could be sexy, especially as it helps bring down the life total for Shadow.

Or the land base may be too tight, I don't know. I think as of now the Peatland only looks realistic for this Shadow deck, it's going to be bad for the rest of the midrange fair decks.

I predict these lands being weaponized more against us than being beneficial. I'm happy for modern as a whole but as a midrange player I'm selfishly upset about linear decks having access to this.

IF this slides in I imagine it would replace the blooming marsh.

Overall, this is like the equivalent of being excited that fatal push was printed when decks used to have trade tempo for our Goyfs.

Horizon has looked very poor for midrange. Luckily it's still early in the spoiler season.

We need card filtering/efficient threats, not more answers.

Yes, we still have a lot of spoilers.

And yes, midrange needs that velocity and some card filtering.

Again, something like vindicate wouldn't phase us. Answers arent the issue at this point.

It's mainly just the extra blast zones running around that hurt the idea of dropping 2x quick Shadows. It's not an awful matchup. But take a look on mtggoldfish, a lot of the top lists right now are matches you'd want to dodge or not feel great seeing.

I'm extremely disappointed with Horizon spoilers thus far, midrange is getting absolutely nothing so far. And no, the Force cycle for black is not some auto include. The Horizon lands are more detrimental to us than of help.

At this point if there's not some fixed and powerful version of DRS, Hym or Sylvan Library this is looking to be a major disappointment. Extra removal isn't what we need either.

It feels like midrange is getting the shaft right now up to this point in spoilers, nothing looks that playable yet, not unless Runes slides into Abzan midrange or something.

You know that BGx can use one of these as well, right? It's a tool that you can use.

I think they're a great deck building option. I can think of a few places where I absolutely want these and others where I know that the life loss will be fatal. BGx can benefit from their opponent paying life for a few turns, BGx can benefit from being able to draw their own cards with this land.

These lands have real costs to use. That's a wonderful thing for the format... Choices, options, costs. Not just "I get everything and it costs me nothing".

I don't think your grasping the concept of how much more impactful this is to a linear deck that isn't concerned with life loss to kill quickly. I'm not going to tap 1 damage per turn, play Bob, have fetches and thoughtseizes. This is maybe...a 1 of? 2 of? Players stuffing this in their decks will be punished when burn plays 4x of these.

I have no clue what the impact of this land with shadow decks are, and that needs to be assessed. For Jund and Rock...this is very bad for us and stretches us out in different directions even further.

Kenshin, won't this actually hurt fair decks like Rock and Shadow? We can't afford to harp that much damage on ourselves. We want to starve the opponent of resources and topdeck the better cards.

Shadow is fairly tight on fetchlands, won't it be difficult to slot in?

It's great for modern. On a selfish note, as a fair midrange player, this actually feels harmful to the archetype. It's kind of when Jund players cheered for Push without realizing how bad it was for their Goyfs several months down the road. I'm kind of getting the same feeling as that again.

So, modern got Horizon Canopies for a bunch of colors. I'm happy for modern as a whole...but I'm also sad for BGx, as this is definitely not a good thing, opponents drawing more instead of flooding or being starved of resources goes against the plan.

It's great for modern, bad for midrange. Also, this looks gross for dredge, they can draw cards and keep using loam.

If Liliana's Triumpth isn't making impact than neither is edict. Don't worry about either card unless bogles becomes a huge issue.

No. Humans is a bad matchups for the deck. Period. It takes a ton of dedicated sideboard to make it decent. There's a reason it wasn't big in the mythic championship and performed poorly in it. The deck is strong, the deck is in this meta---is really awful. Not sure why you aren't getting this.

I'm not calling for the sky falling or anything. We still have more horizon spoilers. I just mean it's a little hard not to be envious of blue getting this flood of viable toys after it struggled in modern for so long.

Sylvan library would make shadow players have to play jund or 5c which hasn't appeared oppressive or too good for the meta to adapt.

Fair decks needs some kind of card filtering. Or some amazing drs efficient threat. Loot really helped give this flavor of some fair decks doing unfair things.

I'm happy control decks are getting lovenox it just feels like midrange Is lacking love by wotc.

Gds is a good deck, it didn't become bad. Ita just at the moment the meta is awful for it, even at an fnm level. Some high level gds players feel itd very poorly positioned right now. Humans wish tron, dredge and uw...very brutal to hope to dodge so much.

I saw that deck. It looks solid. What would you say it struggles against? It felt like Humans REALLY kicked this deck out of existence for a while, along with Affinity.

At first I was like, "oh, no, dredge doesn't need this!" but then I realized those decks cant really play this.

This is more awesome for something like Amulet Titan. MAYBE G Tron. I'm not sure this will effect Leyline so much.
