Definitely Dragon Wars. That movie was outright terrible, didn't even remotely have any redeeming qualities whatsoeverat anypoint in the "film". An hour+ of my life wasted.

Are you kidding? Dragon Wars is perhaps the best comedy film I've ever seen. I nearly choked on my drink at least three times during that movie! Just when you think you've seen it all, dinosaurs with rocket launchers strapped to their backs hit the scene! It's as though some guy with a fetish for Korean fantasy won the lottery and decided to use the money to make a movie. It's pure brilliance, although I can maybe, maybe see how you'd be disappointed if you actually went to the theater to see it. The film is definitely best enjoyed with a group of friends at 3 AM on a Saturday.

So yeah my nomination goes to The Room. If only for the fact that I really want to know how anyone can have breast cancer that nonchalantly.

On a more serious note, however, I would have to nominate A Serious Man. That film was just terrible. No plot, horrible soundtrack, and an ending that came so abruptly I was wondering if it was just a long pause.

There were dwarf mammoths that died out not too long ago, so it's not like having a few herds of them in the wild is going to completely destroy the ecosystem. If anything, restoring megafauna, like with wild horses, has had positive impact in specific ways.

In a world where the ice is slowly receding further and further towards the poles, I think they'd actually be much less inclined to propagate. Not to mention the spears and arrows of the hunters that originally killed off the megafauna in North America have gotten much pointier in their absence. They'd be poached the day they reached maturity for their tusks, which means if you put them in the wild they'd have no real chance to survive.

However perhaps if ranches were established where their tusks and meat could be harvested, thus eventually meeting (or at least diminishing) the global demand for MammothMeat, parks could be established where one could go and pet them, in all their wooly glory. There would need to be a lot of space for this to happen, but I'm certain the Canadians and the Russians have more than enough room in their vast northerly territories to support such a program.

I've been pondering a card along the lines of:

    Infektivus 1G
    Creature - Beast
    Trample, infect
    1/1

Is this underpowered? Overpowered? If you were drafting the infect deck, would you play him?

And here's another one just for giggles:

    Infektivus on Steroids 1G
    Creature - Beast
    Trample, haste, infect
At the beginning of the end step, sacrifice ~.
    1/1

EDIT: forgot a crucial portion of the second card

It really depends on how this vote goes/what it sounds like other people will be drafting the day of. If there're more leaning one way then I'll head straight on over to the other side. If more people seem to be going for a certain color pairing, then it would seem obvious you'd want to go in the other.

That said I still think I'm going to try to force Furnace Celebration beatdown.

While that's true, it seems like you're assuming two things (or at least, I feel like I have to assume two things to fully understand your POV).

    1) that this kind of sidewalk discrimination is equal or similar in magnitude to the discrimination in more serious aspects of life where it would be applicable for homosexuals, and/or...

    2) that the discrimination gays face when they're known (non-sidewalk discrimination) isn't as serious as racial or sexist discrimination in similar situations.

    Is that accurate?

For the first part I assume you're speaking on the issue of state-recognized marriage. In my case I really don't care what the government has to say about my loved ones and myself. I understand that may be a major factor in the decision making of other individuals here, but it doesn't factor in too highly for me.

For the second part I would tell you that if I chose to go around and tell individuals who I know would only hold it against me that I'm a homosexual then yes I may experience more discrimination. But I've always assumed a person is entitled to their personal life, and I've never met someone who went around asking people their sexuality-as a harmless question or as means of persecution.

However in general, yes the state's discrimination against gay-marriage is a terrible thing and indeed there is discrimination against all sorts of people and it's all equally horrible (I detest attempts to compare the suffering of various groups to determine who has been more wronged).

I'm just aware that in my current situation and attitude I would be able to easily continue to live my life the way I do without any dramatic changes if I were to change my sexuality.

I'm interested in this, as I don't really hear this opinion this often. What makes you say that? Also as a side note, I'd say that gays face gender role constraints as well, in a different way (seems fairly obvious to me).

The main reasoning behind my decision is that homosexuality isn't something you can always tell just by looking at a person. Believe it or not when you look at someone you make a snap judgement about that person based solely on their appearance. On a simple day to day basis a female or Hispanic individual would face much more immediate bias than a homosexual who isn't overly flamboyant.

I'm not saying I like it, I'm just saying that's how it is.

I'd pick sexuality, as I feel it would be the easiest change to accept and continue on living my life the way I currently do. If I were to change my race or gender, then I would be facing things such as discrimination and gender role constraints (not that gays are not discriminated against, just not as much, in my opinion, as women or non-whites). I wouldn't want to change my religion because I feel that's a cop-out answer in my situation, as although I'm deeply rooted in a Christian foundation, there is little actual practice in my immediate family.

Also being gay might make majoring in theatre a little easier.

  • posted a message on Why do we forgive people?
The answer to the question of 'why do we forgive' is twofold. The first answer deals with the big picture. If humans didn't forgive then we, as a species, would not be able to live together in groups larger than a single individual. Forgiveness allows family groups to move forward with stronger social bonds because to forgive someone implies that you value that person more than the acts they have committed.

The second answer has more to do with the singular person. Forgiveness does wonders for the psychological wellbeing of the forgiver. It allows a peaceful transition from a state of anger or sadness to a state of more neutrality. Seeing as it's somewhat more taxing on the body to be angry than neutral, the benefits of forgiveness is quite clear.

  • posted a message on When both sides pray for victory
Honestly I don't think I've ever heard anyone or met anyone who prayed for victory. In the prayers I've made and encountered before sports matches or job interviews or other tasks in which my success is definitely not guaranteed, I've asked for things along the lines of clarity of mind, readiness of body, no rain, etc. I'm not saying that praying for victory in certain situations (such as when their life may be on the line) is wrong, but simply that in most of the cases I've been confronted with have dealt mainly with forces that are personal (Praying that a sprained ankle heals in time for a match) or would affect all sides equally (Praying a storm holds off until after an event). However everyone must realize that praying is a very personal thing, and oftentimes is simply a matter of someone saying a selfish wish out loud (Praying for the star quarterback to break a leg).

In the end it is entirely up to God whether or not he does anything immediately noticeable in response to the prayers of an individual, and we can never truly know the reasoning behind his actions, since we can never know everything, as he does. That's why, although I do pray, I also find it's best if you give your all in addition to any spiritual assistance.

I favor the idea that in the future technology will be such a glorious thing that Google Translate will automatically translate any foreign language I hear for me, outside of Elvish and Esperanto.

    Quote from Surging Chaos
As already stated, this has been tried before and it failed miserably.

What SHOULD happen though is that kids should learn other languages as they grow up learning to speak their native one at a younger age. Start small; numbers, colors, simple words, and go from there. European countries do this and I'm still surprised why America hasn't followed suit. One of my younger cousins whose mom is from Ukraine learned both English and Russian growing up. He can speak both languages fluently even though he's only 6.

I'd like to interject that in the United States we don't have nearly as many bordering states (2) as countries in Europe tend to have. Not to mention that one of them is filled with English speakers already. In Europe if you learn a second language from a nation just across the border, it's not very difficult to go there and be able to use it. In the United States this would mean traveling a great distance for most people, and the incentive to learn the language of a nation you may or may not ever have a chance to visit just isn't very strong in most of us. Besides, with the way things are right now many Americans are already learning Spanish just to appear more appealing in the job market.

I agree with you, however, that children of immigrant parents should be taught their parent's language and culture, since they'd have a solid tutor to teach them and and help them practice the language.

  • posted a message on Why do People Hate the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer? (Poll- Do you like it?)
I'm in an awkward state. I thought the books were fun, albeit full of poorly defined characters and plot holes and what have you. I don't think they're utter crap. I don't think they're God's gift to man, either. I think that they're in that tiny space in between, where most other books go, that's neither really good nor really bad, but still enjoyable.

I dislike the series in general though because of the fans and the haters. Both sides are usually fanatical about voicing their opinions of the books. The rest of the world gets it, it's one of those series you either love or you hate.

Can we move on to something else now?

The album sounded very "meh" at first. However with each new listen I find myself liking it more and more, like some sort of fungal growth that slowly works its way into every crevice of your mind. It's not Funeral, but it's definitely good. Better than Neon Bible in my book.

My personal favorite is the work done by Philip Glass for Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters. Here's a sample.

Then again, I'm a sucker for minimalism anyhow, so I guess his works would appeal to me.
