... you know, if they put snow dual lands that come into play untapped, I think that might be why they priced the set where it is at. This isn't that bad, but still not the level I'd expect.

Well so far this set looks like garbage for about 200 dollars a box. Laughing

Joke aside, I'm hoping they got something good to actually show in the next few days. This is not giving me a good impression considering they are charging a lot more for this.

Oh, you went the heroes route like I did. Against removal heavy decks you basically have to go with afterlife and discard effects. Freebooter and Thought Erasure are two that I'd recommend mainboard.

Fyi, I mostly have stuck in two color instead of venturing into three color since I like the consistency, so my advice is coming from my experience playing dimir mill and Orzhov gideon stomps.

Also, Tyrant's Scorn works better if you include counter spells like Thought collapse, Sinister Sabotage, etc. That way if you need to deal with something that is too big for scorn to kill, you bounce it and counter it. I'd pick a multi-color counter for hero to trigger.

My fear right now is that wizards is changing the innovation sets into the masters sets. Modern Horizons is really a test to see what happens to the market when old cards that are good, but not modern legal, get introduced into modern through a format other than standard. I suspect anything reprinted from the olden days into modern that is actually on the level will increase dramatically due to the sudden surge of demand. Heck, I got a feeling modern will get really pricey for at least a few months after horizons hits even if modern horizons isn't that great of a set.

Imagine what happens next year if they do something like Battlebond 2, only they price it at the price of modern horizons and throw enemy fetchlands in.

What? We just had a Humans vs Affinity pro tour final. We just had Humans as one of the best decks(and 3 copies into the top 8 and no mention at all?), UWx Control is gaining traction because of the new cards and MH is probably going to boost most of the fair decks.

Colt, I know you just come in here to speak about a new format or make frontier look glorious; but let's get real.

Modern is going to be the premier non-rotating format for many years to come and I predict there is going to be a Modern Horizons 2, because MH is probably going to be a huuuuge success.

I was actually serious. I didn't keep track of modern the past few weeks so it was a legitimate question, not sarcasm. :p

Also Frontier isn't glorious, it's a niche format that has a cult following. That and I'm not holding my breath for anything WoTC pushes as a format to hold, but I do know some people who are speculating on that inbetween standard and modern format.

Technically, EDH seems to be having a huge boom thanks to War of the Spark, given the price trends I've seen.

Not so much speculation as it is an inevitability. They launch a new online client that only supports cards in a rotating standard format and those cards can be bought with real world money; once those cards rotate out, WotC isn't going to make an announcement telling Arena players "Well, we forgot to put the whole rotation thing in the tutorial; but fun while it lasted, right?". Partly due to the fact that WotC would rather suffer from Ebola than participate in any form of direct community outreach, but mostly due to the fact that Arena was a planned project and turned out to be a gold mine for WotC + Hasbro shareholders. The need for another format/game function to ensure players don't feel conned come rotation is likely one of the first things WotC considered. It's also likely that solution will be confined to the Arena client only.

Standard is in the best place its been for quite some time and Modern is about to receive the largest single infusion of new cards in the format's history. I'd buy them maybe wanting to try out something like a "Legacy-Lite" were a new format introduced to the paper game, but there's no need for a frontier 2.0 in the paper game. Sure, I'd imagine some players would try it out in paper, but anything of the sort would be created for the sole purpose of maintaining the illusion for some Arena players that their collections aren't completely worthless come rotation time. I'm pretty computer savvy when it comes to hardware and building machines, but I don't know the first thing about programming; if it's feasible for WotC to realistically port over older cards/formats into Arena one day then maybe they'll put some thought into it, but I wouldn't be surprised if they just rip Hearthstone, call it "Wild", and figure it out as they go.

I agree with everything you stated except for the state of standard. I guess you can call it karma finally doing it's thing, but the net deck culture has completely obliterated the game as far as the one vs one matches. This is going to encourage wizards to push for more Dragons style type flex cards over the original cheap and low cost narrow answers they used to print a lot, resulting in a power creep of the 2-4 cmc spells much like how we saw a power creep of the 2-4 mana creature spells back around Kahns -> Kaladesh. Wizards actually power crept the 4-6 cmc slots in Amonkhet -> Rivals to push a top end format, and I'd argue that some of the things we see now are stronger than even the dragons out of Dragons of Tarkir or the Eldrazi in BFZ. The only things close to the new creatures in the 5-6 cmc are the original Eldrazi and trons two signature top end walkers.

Also, standard health is partially linked to the Limited and Draft environments of Arena. A lot of people who dump tons of time into arena use the two as a way to optimize their card acquisition, and War is a very "you get a bomb or die" limited experience. So regardless of how nice the money looks coming in from MTG:A, this looks a bit like WoW going out of Wrath of the Lich King to Cataclysm.

The WAR situation is a bit of a mess, but not so much in a way that is obvious to the average buyer. It seems that the distributors either didn't order enough product and then got caught in a bad situation, or wizards withheld product to improve early reception and keep box sales moving at a steady clip. The result is a lot of smaller stores didn't get their full allocations since the distributors favor the people with the largest scale orders. That means places like CFB, CK, SCG, and Sports and More got a lot of product and everyone else got less.

Then on top of this, there is the problem with the Mythic Edition sales on Ebay plus the company wants to do a special Japanese card promotion, which means having to dedicate resources to not only print english boxes, but Japanese boxes of the same set. Then they are also releasing the Japanese promotional walkers at a rate of 1/4 prize packs.

War of the Spark is probably going to get opened even more than Dominaria thanks to the theme and power of the set, resulting in an implosion of the card values in the set and an inflation of all the shocklands as people rush to get their mana bases sorted. Guilds of Ravnica and Allegiance are no longer going to be drafted heavily, leaving a limited supply of shocklands on the table.

Meanwhile, all the checklands are rotating soon, and Sulfur Falls got a 3 of spot in the UR Tempo decks. If someone wants to get the best bang for their buck, just get UR tempo. It comes with a Phoenix, three sulfur falls, and a bunch of other decent cards at a good price. There's still one lingering at my Target that I am probably going to go get while every timmy is blowing money on WAR.

Also, Rivals and Ixalan are being powered by EDH at the moment and are mostly forgotten. If you have anything you want from there I'd grab them when you have the chance. Core 2019 was dismally opened as well and a lot of the modern playable sideboard cards are dirt cheap. All the money is stuck in Nicol Bolas, the Ravager, which is going to plummet in value once rotation hits to probably 10-15 dollars before going up again due to EDH.

Dominaria got opened so much the prices are depressed heavily on the singles. I wouldn't take the price as any indication of lack of playability. We're talking Kahns of Tarkir 2.0 due to Teferi and Karn soaking up dollar value.

Dear lord do not buy any japanese cards until the supply hickup gets dealt with. It's really, really bad right now on War of the Spark and everything is inflated into oblivion.

What is the meta right now? Graveyard decks, Tron, and Control?

It's not just Modern Horizons. Many people are speculating on there being a new format going between modern and standard due to Arena. I could easily see one forming, but it is going to really depend on how enduring Arena can be.

My favorite cards for modern out of the set are Ashiok and Blast Zone. I want to hold hope for at least one god making an impact, but the problem is that the second I see a 4 mana card I think midrange, and midrange is just dead in a format dominated by control and fast aggro strategies. Technically, there's way too much stuff messing around in the graveyard right now to the point I've played with Cremate due to it being unexpected against all these decks that want to mulligan until some specific card gets pulled and then pitched turn 1 or turn 2 to the yard.

The problem with predicting what is good in the new set is that no one has really built a deck with the design space opened up to such a degree. Walkers that are enchantments, even if they are costed at 3+, are pretty damn powerful even at uncommon. The main issue is combating the degeneracy that got introduced from expanding on existing areas like recurring graveyard threats. The new Teferi is another one of the walkers that I think is going to become a staple pretty fast.

So, lets say you went to meijer and during a BoGo sale, you picked up two BFZ gift boxes for 45 bucks. The gift boxes are obliterated, the packs are cut in odd places, so you break them all open and you find a Scalding Tarn expedition. What is the best procedure to protect the card?

    ...

This just happened to me and I've never opened something worth more than a modern masters box on release.

Is it really? I could be super far off here, but you sound bitter.

How on earth can a jace, and ugin for market value be hot garbage. Especially since you get 6 other walkers who retail at roughly another 100 usd and 24 sealed packs to draft or open.

    Enlighten me mr/mrs sour grapes
Because, despite some execution flaws, I actually liked the old Masterpiece system. I personally watched multiple young players open Kaladesh Masterpieces at the prerelease and it was obviously the highlight of their day. That's important. The old system catered to everyone, anyone had a chance to own one, and most importantly it actually encouraged players to go out to FNM and actually participate in tournaments because of the potential to get a sweet ass card.

As mentioned above, the Mythic Edition caters solely to A) investors/scalpers or B) players with a large amount of disposable income. It's simply not the same, and in my opinion is far, far worse. Not to mention that WotC is marking the ***** up out of it. They're essentially selling you 8 cards for $150. That's ******* stupid. It's not like it costs them any more to print a Jace than it does a Colossal Dreadmaw. They might as well make Black Lotus a box topper and sell the boxes at $10,000 each at this point.

The fact they put Jace and Ugin in the last one is pretty telling, to be frank. I think the artwork on a lot of the mythic edition cards this time around looks bad, especially Nahiri and Tezzeret.

Wizards can add whatever format they want to the game. The problem right now with Arena is that they should never have had best of one 60 card constructed, and the monetization system they picked has created a painful skinner box situation where people slam best of ones over doing best of three. The only game type worth playing online at the moment is draft and sealed.

I mean, adding brawl is relatively easy to do from a programming perspective and they probably have it on their shortlist of things to add in, the main issues they have on defcon one (or should have, at least) are all with best of one and getting SOI and up into the game. They need a format with a large number of sets that people can fall back on, since Arena right now is mimicking the worst aspects of Force of Will.
