Just because Champ dies to Ultimate Price doesn't detract from it's playability

That statement largely depends on the meta one is playing in (the group I play with tends to all have it either side-boarded or already as a four of in their deck). I love undergrowth champion, it's just that Anafenza has more advantages than disadvantages if someone is already playing abzan colors. If burn is more common as removal, though, then undergrowth takes the lead.

On a side note, it's kind of fun how hardened scales is mostly Kahns block stuff. We got most of the tools already in our binders for it if we've been collecting. Well, unless you're like me and have the worst luck ever on crack-a-pack day. Only got one hangarback walker sitting around and zero Den Protector.

my favorite one drop so far has been Herald of the Scale, but mostly because even in death that little guy still keeps pounding face because his counters go to the next critter we have up on the list. The downside is that it's basically a trade off of survivability vs more damage. I think both herald and Scythe Leopard will be easy to underestimate.

Gods, it's painful when one realizes that a 15 usd card is probably required to really push the deck over the edge. Hangarback is good because it can't get hit by the 2 cmc ultimate price, which ends undergrowth champion and any other mono-colored choice we have unless we counter with valorous stance. That's the primary reason my 3cmc slot has Anafenza the Foremost instead of Undergrowth champion. She can't get Ultimate Priced much like Siege rhino. Avatar of the Resolute is still a good substitute for those on a budget in the 2 cmc slot, though.

Edit: I think Den Protector is now on my "To Buy" list for the deck as well. They spoiled the rest of the set for Battle of Zendikar and I don't see anything that really stands out that gives good card advantage otherwise.

Honestly, I've just stepped into standard and given the origins clash pack is basically Abzan, I think it's sort of the "Ryu" color combination of the current standard meta. It's easy to make and hard to get wrong, and Abzan offers clear upgrade paths for those stepping into the standard fold.

Keep in mind, while the "core" is still staying around another standard season, the deck has lost Keeper and Fleecemane lions, so removal is going to have an easier time with Abzan once rotation hits. Part of the reason there's a hardened scales thread right now is because there are people trying to find suitable replacements for the missing cards, as well as brewing with different color combinations.

    Hi all,

I'm migrating from the official WOTC forums since they are shutting down soon and this place actually seems active. Hope to have many fun postings with everyone here!

So does anyone know what we might replace Fleecemane lion with once Theros rotates out? I've been toying with a hardened scales variant of Abzan Midrange, but have found it a bit slow in practice. I love seeing a 8/8 trample managorger hydra, though. Smile

Well, I've tried out undergrowth champion and the feeling I am getting from him is he is the next Skaab Ruinator. He looks amazing from the onset, but the number of things we need to do to make said card awsome is going to hurt his playability. I'd say until we see some real pushing in pro-tour land, don't preorder the Champions and use the money to get hangarback walker. Both hangarback and champion can grow, but Hangarback will give the other guy pause before he uses removal, or at least force them to consider some kind of "exile permanent / creature" spell instead of just "destroy". Right now the only appeal I see of getting champion is if we really need to worry about blocking eldraazi, which honestly shouldn't come up since we'd probably hit the draazi with removal, have a really big managorger or something else on the field, etc.

If someone is going with a CoCo version of the deck, though, Undergrowth champion might be a better fit then hangarback.

Still not sure long term how well the prices are going to hold for Battle for Zendikar, though. The problem is that it's a fall set, so tons and tons of boxes are going to get cracked and we are going to get flooded with cards. Even if the protour takes off and spikes prices short term, by December most of the card prices will probably decrease except for chases.

Am I the only one that remembers homelands and Ancient Empires? Sweet mercy, games would go into wall matches!

The only thing disappointing about the new set is the fact they don't have as many useful tools for non-eldrazi, non-ally decks. But then again, that is what Kahns block is for. I mean, hardened scales might become a thing now!

Yeah, I came to the same conclusion last night when I was opening up the new origins clash packs and building my current "Much less focused" playtesting deck that the core deck is going to be strongly green. Deathmist + Den protector is a good combination and having both servant of the scale and honored hierarch fills out the low level well in an aggro build. Also, in Mono-green using Sword of the Animist might pay off as it gives another way to get landfall outside of pinging ourselves painfully with fetch lands. On the plus side, we got the cheapest fetches in standard as windswepts are only 10 usd right now, and for once I don't really see a problem using evolving wilds as a budget filler option while saving up for wooded foothills or that blue white one (second most expensive...)

I've got a feeling we will see Undergrowth champion spike like mad when the new set gets released just from the fact so many of us are already seeing how useful it might be. Albeit, I don't think it's the next hangarback walker unless hardened scale decks really take off on the pro-tour.

Shaman of the Great Hunt seems better than Kalastria, No? Sure, when kalastria hits, all your creatures get to benefit, but Shaman is a bit more consistent with its haste and the ability for each creature to fend for itself.

I think I'd like to try Temur because of it:

It should also be noted that Honored Hierarch can tap for any colour of mana, which means if you get it renowned, you can grow Skyrider Elf and Woodland Wanderer even larger.

This is looking really good. I think you're onto something here... Hitting Ferocious is going to be ridiculously easy with Hardened Scales.

Also, Lumbering Falls should be in here. 3/3 hexproof in this deck with the possibility of it getting bigger is just too good to pass up.

was going to say that the land would fit in. Costs an arm and a leg to activate, though. Oh yeah, and having Undergrowth Champion without Sword of the Animist should be a crime. The guy is built for it!

The only thing keeping me from jumping on her is that double black requirement. The majority of the buffing critters are either white (via outlast, or bolster), or green (either comes with +1/+1 counters, flips to get +1/+1 counters, Outlast, or Bolster). Avatar of the Resolute is already a double green cast, so by using it we've already put some devotion into green rather than splashing it. Pushing Drana into the deck will mean we got double green and double black to contend with, so we'd then be splashing white as the third color.

My mind set on Drana is we probably want to see what the vampire tribal looks like. If it has a focus on attacking and "growth", we definitely can go abzan with strong green and black while using white for utility. Otherwise, for GBW we'd probably be better off finding another generator. I actually sort of like Anafenza the Foremost at the moment since at the very least she forces the opponent to exile anything that dies.

I think I still like the abzan color combination for the hardened scales deck since depending completely on variable strength critters alone doesn't seem like a good game plan. Unfortunately, I'm still working it out right now, though.

Abzan charm will be very useful critter removal in a meta with tons of fatties, and doubles as a +1/+1 counter generator or card drawing utility in a pinch. Plus black gives hand disruption and access to better removal. Most of the eldrazi I've seen make me want to remove them before they hit the game board rather than after.
