I've read the last 10 pages and playtested this deck before Alara Reborn, and it felt a bit underpowered against B/W Tokens and 5c Control. But I'm very interessted in this deck and would like to play it - so my questions is, how is this decks chances against B/W Tokens, 5c and Boat Brew? Did Maelstrom Pulse improve the powerlevel of this deck?

Yeah if the Zoo player manages to get 1-2 Kitchen Finks into play, they probably will win you the game, at least that's what I observed in the top8 I watched today. The key is to play very careful, not beeing afraid of giving the Fae to much time, and bringing in key cards when they are forced to blow their Explosives or the like.

Just played a PTQ and went 4-2

    RD1: Naya Zoo WIN 2-0
RD2: All In Red WIN 2-1
RD3: Fae LOSE 1-2 (before I left he won his mirror match in the top8, lost because I didn't attack into his Teferi before I played Damnation, he survied with 2 life)
RD4: TPS LOSE 0-2 (desire for 4 hitting another owns...anyway, I just wasn't prepared for it and the field was full of em)
    RD5: Naya Zoo WIN 2-1
    RD6: Astral Slide WIN 1-0

A friend of mine went 5 wins and 1 draw with his fae, just to lose to a brutal Zoo draw in the top8...

I played Deathcloud (posted my list a while ago) with white splash for kataki and COP:Red

I had big difficulties against Fae, even though I baorded in 2 Extirpate and 3 Pithing Needles - Relict never really impressed me, it was the Jitte and the Ancestral Visions that killed me

    Top 8 was

    Fae vs Domain Zoo
    Fae vs Fae
    Fae vs Bant
    Elves vs Naya Zoo

Elves won over NayaZoo, Fae over Bant and Domain Zoo over Fae

I expect alot of Red decks, thats why I decided to splash White instead of Red.

    I sideboard like this

    Affinity:

    +3 Kataki
    +3 Damnation

    -3 Raven's Crime
    -2 Darkblast
    -1 Worm Harvest

    Naya Zoo

    +3 Circle of Protection: Red
    +1 Damnation

    -2 Darkblast
    -1 Worm Harvest
    -1 Raven's Crime

    Elfball

    +3 Extirpate
    +2 Damnation

    -4 Sakura Tribe Elder
    -1 Kitchen Finks/Ravenous Baloth/Wormharvest

    Fae

    +3 Extirpate

    -2 Crime//Punishment
    -1 Smother

    Loam Mirror

    +3 Extirpate
    +1 Mystic Enforcer

    - ?

Mystic Enforcer is for the Mirror, yet to be tested, it's certainly a nice topdeck. If it turns out to be good, I'll add one more.
The 2 slots should be something against Fae, but I don't know what. I don't like Choke, nor do I like Night of Soul's Betrayal or two more Darkblast. Pithing Needle seems good, but not really great. Maybe 2 Krosan Grip for those Relicts? Then I also got more answers for Sulfuric Vortex. Or change the plan and board in some Beatdown?

Got got a PTQ next weekend, so all critics, ideas and suggestions are very welcome

    - KotR isn't stolen with Threads
Almost every Fae don't play it, and if they do, its a Sideboard card. And it isn't as problematic as a Relict of Progenitus

    - KotR grows bigger than Goyf
The turn Goyf comes in (round 2-4) he'll almost always be bigger than the Knight. And in lategame, the difference won't matter much if you hit an opponent with either fattie.

    - KotR spreads out your casting costs so a chalice at 2 isn't as effective
Only Tron and All In Red play Chalice (some Fae play it too, but I don't see the reason why)...

    - KotR can make herself grow when serving as a wall against red decks
Knight won't be that big in a relevant time against red decks. And it cost one more and forces you to fetch, which isn't good against red decks.

    - KotR shrinks when it's stolen via Sower, Goyf stays the same size

Thats right, but this argument isn't relevant

    - Her fetching ability is nice as it can fetch you utility lands like Mutavault and GQ (big against Tron)
This and the Spell Snare argument are actually the only reasons to play Knight imo. But by pulling a Snare you can cheat in a Bitterblossom, but this anyway shouldn't be a problem with ravens crime.

    - It's harder to counter with SSS
That's right, but that shiuldn't justify the inclusion of Knight in this deck.

Knight doesn't make any of our bad matchups good. I think we need cards that actually improve our matchup against red decks.

I liked the cavalier a lot. Faerie and Kithkin had hard times dealing with it.

    Me: 2nd turn Wolf Skull
    Him: 2nd turn Bitterblossom
    Me: 3rd turn Wilt-leaf cavalier / Doran

I always won those games if I had at least 1 removal in hand because that was already to much pressure for them. Also beeing in the 3 spot is good, because I had the feeling that even my colossus was somewhat slow (especially if you agressivly mulligan, which I often did). Against fae you need to push through before they have cryptic mana open, most build play thoughtseize instead of broken ambitions, they'll take your removals. thats when you swarm them.

Against kithkin its also really good, because of vigilance.

I really have the feeling that this is the strongest deck choice, even though the matchup against 5C and RDW is not really good.

I just made 9. with 5-2, having the best op score and all... the others were 6-1 and 5-1-1 ...

I played Takayuki Takagi's list that placed 2nd at GP Kobe

    Round 1: Solar Flare 2-0
    Round 2: Fae 2-0
    Round 3: Kithkin 2-0
    Round 4: R/b Aggro 1-2
    Round 5: Kithkin 2-1
    Round 6:Kithkin 1-2
    Round 7: Fae 2-0

    Sideboard was

    3 Cloudtresher
    2 Puppeteer Clique
    1 Mindshatter
    1 Shriekmaw
    3 Wispmare
    2 Cribswap
    2 Primal Command
    1 Firespout

Cloudtresher was awesome against kithkin, and Wilt-Leaf Liege from kithkin owned me pretty hard...

    3 Faeries
    2 Kithkin
    2 5c Control (Chapins Version)
    1 Elves

I placed 9. with 5-2 with the doran list that placed 2nd in japan (having the best op score and all). but the other were 6-1 and 5-1-1...

I think 5C won the whole thing

The board looks like this: I have no other Giants in play and my opponent has lots of creatures with a toughness of 1.

Now I choose to play a Thundercloud Shaman from my hand, with the intention to deal all of them 1 damage. Now here comes his move:

he says: "ok, after the Thundercloud Shaman comes into play, the ability goes on the stack. You pass priority and I would like to kill it with Eyeblight's Ending. Now, that the ability resolves and there are no giants in play, no damage will be dealt to creatures."

Is he right? And why? Can someone clear me up?

This situation happened at the FNM. We didn't agree with each other and there were no judges around, so we both had to scoop and play it out again, because we were not allowed to decide it by a dies or something similiar... I've heard of this, and I understand to a certain degree why they ruled it like this... but seriously, just scooping up the cards and giving extra time isn't a good alternative.
What would be the right decision in this situation?

    Thanks for your answers

edit: I'm sorry, I just saw that this wasn't the correct forum, could someone move it to it's right place?

yeah reveillark didn't receive much love, I guess it's because of the heavy amout of faeries that was/is played. I was very lucky in scouting.

I have mixed feelings for Thoughtseize. Its wonderful against Reveillark & Ramp, and ok against Faeries. I don't want to critisize the card on itself, but I do want to critisize the slots that it takes. I just don't know what to cut for them as I'm not willing to cut my removals...

And if you play Thoughtseize, you're playing the Control player as you sacrifice your aggressivness/speed. My list plays out like an affinity, really, it just spams creatures and ask's your opponent to handle them. This sounds stupid, but you have to play it, you'll agree. Turn 4 and 5 kills are not unusual.

But if your meta is filled with Rev you definitely have to maindeck them, no question. Against Wrath the overcommit plan isn't that good.

Packmaster is INSANE in the mirror & he can protect that Perfect from a Wrath/Damnation. Doran also has hard times dealing with him. But Colossus may be better in his slot.

Mirri is nice to have. She's got firststrike and vigilance, and combined with a Paragon can win you matches against Green decks.

Primal Command is a good card, and if I had to play again, I would play them instead of the Spoilings. I never used Sudden Spoiling.
Extirpate is an ok idea... but not for my version I guess. I only like Extirpate when you're playing 4 thoughtseize main and that leads to a more controlish version.

edit: and why are you guys talking about the combo when we mention reveillark? The versions I played against just overran me with card advantage or a good Wrath of Good followed by reveillark. He comboed in 1 of 5 games... and that in round 7 or 8

I played it at our Swiss National Qualifier

    Round 1: Doran Rock

Game 1 was simply won by a Mirri with a +1/+1 token from Paragon after he used all his removals on my other stuff. Game 2 I lost to his Colossus with warhammer. Game 3 I win with forcing his Damnation then playing double Colossus with Garruk. I think this matchup is all about Garruk.
Note: He never drew more than 1 manland.. while I drew 2-3.

    1-0

Round 2: WW Kithkin (japanese list)

Game 1 he overruns me because I hold a very slow hand after mulling to 6.
Game 2 I damnation board away after his 3rd turn, not playing the borderguard. After that I play a Nameless Inversion and a Profane and win
Game 3 I just have bigger creatures. Didn't even have to use my 2 Damnations in my starting hand...

    2-0

    Round 3: Faeries (1890 dude)

Game 1 I win the die roll (the one who goes first is the won most likely to win imo) and he mulls to 6.
1st turn Mutavault. 2nd Turn attack until he played his Pestermite, which allowed me to sneak in some creatures. Manlands finish it...
    Note: No second Turn Bitterblossom
Game 2 he rapes me with 2nd turn Bitterblossom, 3rd Turn Pestermite, 4th an 5th turn Mistbind Clique
game 3 comes down to a very risky play. He tried for the second Scion of the Oona, but I had the Cloudtresher ready. I only had 2 hand cards, and I would have lost the next turn without tresher. puh =)

    3-0

Round 4: Mono Red Burn with Countryside Crusher and Gargadon

Game 1 I somehow manage to win with a Garruk
Game 2 I play Llanowar, Perfect Perfect Vanquisher. EVERYTHING gets burned with 3 Incinerates. I play Colossus and he saccs Mog Fanatic and Shard Volley for it, with a Garga on ~4 counters. next round he kills me
Game 3 was all about outplaying him. He had a Mog Fanatic and 2 hand cards. I attack every round with a Treetop Village and let the Colossus at home (I dont have enough mana to attack with treetop AND pump the changeling, so I left him untapped). He took damage after damage, trying to bluff for not having a Tarfire ready (note: he used around 3 incinerates and 3 volleys for all my creatures). I didnt care and carried on until I had enough mana to kill him.

It's a bad matchup without Primal Command (I didnt have any...)

    4-0

Round 5: Mono Red with splash for Goyf

I lost 1-2... he did the same sick moves like above. just with a little bit drama... He had a Countryside Crusher with 6 tokens on it, I played Sudden Spoiling and we both agreed that I would be a 0/2! But this isn't actually true... and the next turn he started whining. Well, I anyway lost this one...

    4-1

    Round 6: Merfolk (5-0)

I had the best OP score (besides him) but he didn't want to draw because of his friend. But then I managed to persuade him otherwise and we ID. I beat him 2-0 in two short games... winning on the back of 2 Profane Commands.

    4-1-1 (5-1)

Actually I would have won the 1st place but I decided to draw because I never saw a merfolk deck.. lol

    1. Merfolk [16points]
    2. Mono Red Burn (the one from round 4) [15]
    3. B/G Elves (Me) [13]
    4. Faeries (good friend of mine) [13]
    5. Faeries (the guy from round 3) [13]
    6. Faeries [13]
    7. Mono Red splash goyf (round 5 guy) [12]
    8. Doran Rock [12]
    9. Reveillark (my brother) [12]
    10. Faeries
    ...

There was just 1 Mana Ramp, 1 Reveillark and 1 B/G Elves and just 2 Mono Red Players. Lots of Kithkin and Faeries. Good amout of Doran & B/G Control with Bitterblossoms.

    What would I change?

    -2 Sudden Spoiling
    +2 Shriekmaw

maybe some Extirpates SB... and more Colossus. Maybe 3 maindeck and 1 sideboard. He wins games on his own. Damnation is awesome. Nobody should play less than 2 in the sideboard. Wayfinder is good, dont drop him! with him you can afford to play 23 lands, and the 4th land is important (especially for BB)
This deck beats Faeries very easy (unless they have some crazy things going up), but struggles with Ramp and has a slightly bad matchup against Reveillark.

  • posted a message on Some mixed questions
    1. I got a Solitari Confinement in play. My opponent plays Gifts Ungiven. What happens?
Im 100% sure the spell doesnt fizzle completly, but because I cant be targeted, his 4 cards will be sent to the grave - right?

    2. Now this one is funny...: My opponent's got a Triskelavus with 3 Triskelavite artifact tokens in play. I play Pyroclasm. He says "ok. after damage on the stack, I'll sacc them". I say this damage on the stack only works in combat phase... right?

    3. Tournament Play: My opponent forgot to reveal the card off Dark Confident and just drew it. Will this give a gameloss?

    4. Tournament Play: around 10min left in the round. My opponent leads 1-0. Now he shuffles around 1min and mulligans until he has 1 card, each of the mulligan taking around 30-60seconds. As a result of this laming he wins 1-0. The judges are like "well, he's got his time for the mulligans, the shuffling and his decisions whether or not he would like to keep his hand".
What can I do about this?

    5. My opponent has a Sensei's Divining Top along with a Counterbalance in play. Now I play a Orim's Chant. He wants to stack the abilitys of his Senseis Divining Top in an order, which would allow him to do something like this:

Put it on top of the library. Reveal it for the Counterbalance, countering the Orims Chant. Now, with all this down, let the last ability resolve, which would let him rearrange the top 3 cards of his library.
    Sounds crazy, is this possible?

And what if something like this occurs: My opponent had a Senseis Divining Top in play, but tapped it to put it on top of the deck and draw a card. Now, with the thought he still had it in play, he just looks at the top 3 cards and I call "Judge!". What will the Judge's decision be, and why? And what if he didn't only look, but ALSO rearrange them?

    6. I play Enduring Ideal. My opponent attemps to Stifle it. Now, what happens if he Stifles the whole Epic ability? And what happens if he only Stifles the "at the begining of your upkeep" thing? I wont be able to search my library and I can't play any spells no more?

    7. My opponent wants to sacrifice his Ronom Unichorn in order to remove my Bridge from Below, but he doesn't have a fitting target. He isn't able to sacrifice it, right?

Im sorry for the tournament questions, but they occured and I'm really curious about them.
Card tags, please. Read the Forum Guidelines. (Tournament questions are fine, by the way)

"4.1] What's a better play turn 2 (with a birds in play) and why: Dark Confidant or Doran?"

Doran, every single time. There's a reason why that bird has been played on turn 1, and thats because you want speed.
A better comparison would be: Doran or Bob & discard. Then I would play the second... but you can argue about this one.

    "
2.1a] Game one, not knowing what your opponent is playing and having won the dice roll and going first, what's better to play first turn and why - birds or therapy?"
    Are you serious? BIRDS =D

Playing U/G Tron, Doran is a favorable matchup preboard (didnt playtest sideboard yet) because a topdecked Gifts = Win.
Next Level Blue is a bad matchup for Rock, and MUC too. RDW is about even. And Dredge is your worst nightmare.
Affinity is ok to favorable. If you have problems, splash that Anicent Grudge with a single Stomping Ground. You could also think about splashing Boil... its awesome :p

Doran is, like any other Rock, a deck with a lots of 50/50 matchups.

Vindicate that Shackles, they are the reason you lose. Later you have your sideboard creatures (those 4G 4/4 when comes into play, destroy target enchantment or artifact) for the Counterbalance

When should you Extirpate that Dread Return? There are many situations in which its good, generally you make it in response (Dread Return = Sorcery, so it should be very easy to find a fitting situation).

Lets say he has 1 Narcomoeba and 1 Imp in play, he dredges a Moeba into play, its triggers and you respond by taking Dread Return out. And if it comes later (after him having 3 creatures on board), just use your priority after he has dredged it into his yard to take it out. As I said, it's a sorcery so it should be very easy if you understand the priority rules and so on.

    hth

edit: and yes, saccing 3 creatures are the casting costs, you can play the pig in response, removing the bridges out of the game, but the moment where he sacced his creatures, the brigdes went on the stack, and no matter what you do (except stifle) it will resolve the moment you give your priority back. So he will 100% get those tokens.

This is just not true for me. Against Ideal, I won more matches than I lost... (preboard, but with 2 Gaddock main instead of Isamaru).

Against Countertop Goyf, the Counterbalance actually never mattered. The Threads and the Goyf are what annoy me. Gaddock is very nice here (Explosives). This matchups was a coinflip for me... the one who begins won, thats preboard.

    I like this deck.
