Hey guys, I've mostly been playing RUG Delver, but I was curious if you guys think a BUG version would work at all? We'd have access to the same threats as with RUG (Delver, Mongoose and Werebear), but would also be able to play Gurmag Angler or Putrid Leech if we wanted to, as well as more removal to keep opposing creatures out of the way, instead of finishing the enemy with burn. Thoughts?
Hey guys, I've just been trying to brew up a midrange value deck based on this standard deck: http://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/standard-dead-forest-control#paper that utilizes Sylvan Advocate and Tireless Tracker for value. I've been struggling to find good budget creatures to play with them. Right now I'm leaning towards a Golgari or Simic build.
Here's what I have right now:
Despise/Duress for 1 drop discard
Skinshifter and Sylvan Advocate for value 2 drops (I'm looking for a better 2 drop than Skinshifter)
Tireless Tracker and looking for another good 3 drop
And then I need a top of the curve threat, which right now looks like Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis or Desecration Demon
Still hoping to find more good green spells and such, so any help would be awesome!
Hi everyone, just got into EDH recently and am having a blast deck building! Since these are my first attempts at decks though, I'd really like some card suggestions for my decks, as well as an idea of which cards won't run quite as well in them.
For some background, I will be playing 2-3 player EDH with the other two guys having mostly heavy aggro decks (Khaalia, Jazal, Gisela, etc). I am more of an aggro-control player, who enjoys having the right answers, but still playing creature threats and winning with a swing that my opponent can't stop. We play with a budget of 100 dollars per deck, in order to keep things from being about who has the best job and has the most money to spare. Because they are heavy aggro players, they don't like their huge threat being tossed aside by a 2 mana card as soon as it hits the field, and really dislike boardwipes and infinite combos, which I can understand so I only play a few compared to many lists that I have seen, and am a little creature heavier although it puts me at a disadvantage. I have to make the spells that I do put in count. With that basis, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Here are the decks:
This deck is my most recent work in progress. I wanted to make a more aggro oriented list, with the ramp to get big creatures out and still have answers in hand. Without a lot of control elements though, as I've seen in the primers here (which are fantastic), I would fold to creature swarms. I'm considering going Rafiq exalted style so I can hold back blockers while still swinging with Jenara. She won't be ending games instantly like Rafiq, but then could be tweaked to be more competitive depending on where the group ends up going. Or I could focus more on the control aspect. She has so much flexibility! This one is the most up in the air, and anything helps.

I like being able to hold up mana and choose between activating Oona's effect, flashing someone in, or using an instant. The deck feels clunky somehow though, could be because the other two can start the beatdown on turn 4 while I'm still setting up (which is kind of how Oona is anyway). Trying to fit in some lower drops and a couple black kill spells.

I may need more of a finisher with this one because it feels kinda durdly. I also don't have many ways to deal with fliers in Gisela and Khaalia.
Hey guys, I don't know if any of you have seen fruuty's list of Pauper decks on tappedout ([url=http://tappedout.net/users/fruuty/deck-folders/[/url]), but he's missing U/W Caw Blade and has a Jeskai one instead. I was going to send him a list, but wanted to get a consolidated deck first, so it isn't just my take being posted. What cards do all of us tend to play the same amount of, or at least make sure are in the deck?
Edit: He put a list up. I think the ones that we've been using are a bit more refined though, so I'd still like ideas.
From the deck lists I've seen here, I've got:
4x Squadron Hawk
4x Mulldrifter
4x Trinket Mage
4x Brainstorm
4x Counterspell
4x Journey to Nowhere
Cenn's Enlistment
What number of Ancient Den and Seat of the Synod, what counterspells and draw cards, etc. Should the finisher be one Seraph and one Guardian? Two of one? Discussion would be great. And correct me if I missed anything on the list!
That deck list actually looks really solid against MBC, and I'm digging the Oblivion Rings. Seems like they would make the Bogles matchup a lot more better too because of the ability to remove their lifelink/trample auras. Have you tried matchups other than MBC? You mentioned doing well against aggro, so I'm just curious. Either way, removing most of the draw seems very different in playstyle, but it also seems to have made room for more protection and removal. Do you find yourself with an empty hand at all because of that? One other thing, Flayer Husk being gone surprises me. Did it not help with Geth's Verdict and chump blocking against aggro?
Either way, the Bloody Tomes seem like a great idea (in a match that isn't timed of course!), and I really like the new ideas. Thanks for the time you took to playtest!
Kor Sanctifiers looks excellent as a 2-of to have artifact / enchantment hate mainboard against a meta who's so reliant on Artifacts right now. Definitely considering making it some slots, but what do I take out though? Everything's so cramped at the moment. However, it could allow me to cut a Dust to Dust and something else for two copies of Standard Bearer (which is better against Stompy, Infect and Burn but worse against Boggles).
I'm not sure what your deck looks like right now, so I can't really make any suggestions. I try to keep 2 creature slots open beside the 4 Hawks, Mulldrifters and Mages, so that's where I'd slot them. While it takes away from the usual game-ender, I seem to recall you using Custodi Squire as utility. Maybe this card's utility is more important? The difficulty is that even with Bonesplitter, Sanctifiers can't trade with an Angler and it doesn't have any ability to prevent blocking. Possible cut a draw spell or two depending on what you run?
Is Stoic Rebuttal usually active by turn 4? It doesn't look like enough artifacts at first glance, but that could be my inexperience. Either way, the deck looks really cool! I waver between Seraph, Custodi Squire and Guardian of the Guildpact in my deck.
Aether Spellbomb sounds like a good idea, but it targets, so I don't believe that it will affect Bogles. Celestial Flare seems pretty handy against "one creature beatdown" decks though. It could potentially replace Gideon's Reproach. The rough thing is that it costs double white.
From looking things up, I'm just going to spout cards because some of the SB options might help others.
Possible Main Deck: Kor Sanctifiers, Silverchase Fox (allows you to remove an enchantment another turn and can trade), Curfew (free shuffling with Squadron Hawk!), possibly even Standard Bearer to eat removal and edicts, while absorbing pump. It would have to be a meta call of course.
You've probably already considered this, but CoP: Green sounds like a possible answer to both rough matchups. I don’t know what their sideboards look like though(I don’t tend to play with sideboards). Against Bogles, just use it to stall until able to grab the Dispeller’s Capsule, stopping their lifegain and vigilance auras, then pushing through while preventing damage? Or something along those lines. I’m theorizing. It could also lessen the damage from Stompy, allowing us to go to the longer game and giving us card advantage to work with. Side value of stopping Infect, which may crop up.
I got a decent amount of the list from one of Zephyr's earlier builds (and the primer). Removed the Prohibits entirely and cut back a bit on removal and card draw so that quicker decks stand a good chance. Not sure if I should swap in another land instead of the Radiant Fountains, but they've helped me hold out for a Seraph of Dawn before, so...
Like Jin said, you need to trade 1-for-1 your creatures as much as possible, while countering and killing their ones with removal. Eventually, they will run out of gas, and you will keep drawing cards and burying them in card advantage. Sylvok Lifestaff is excellent for this purpose and should always be the weapon you reach for in aggro matchups, as it gives more power to creatures and turns trades into life, essentially buying you even more time. The Lifestaff also makes Hawks able to trade with Insectile Aberration, which is key against Delver. If you play your cards right and counter problem cards like Mogg War Marshal, Triplicate Spirits or Beetleback Chief that put multiple bodies for one card you should be alright. Flayer Husk is also a good equipment to grab if you ever draw a second mage, as it provides a body for chumpblocking and afterwards gives a boost to all your creatures, so they might even survive in combat.
Awesome, thanks for the tips! So, since I play pretty casually and am trying to get a few other people interested, how would you guys run the deck with the Seraph of Dawn, Bladed Bracers and possibly Doomed Traveller? I don't want to counter them too much, as that leads to a lot of frustration for some players, so I was thinking of removing a few for those cards so that there is a more creature based strategy. Thoughts?
This seems like a really cool deck guys! Started messing around with Pauper just recently, and the amount of options this deck has is great. I play casually with my roommate, who is a fan of big aggro decks, so I'm using no Cenn's Enlistments, a couple more counters and the Custodi Squire loop. How have you found that the deck runs against smaller aggro decks like Stompy and Goblins? I've heard plenty of comments about it just folding on game 1, but haven't gotten to test it yet.
Thanks! And good ideas! I run Burn, but when it's budget you sometimes run longer than intended, so although long game isn't the plan, a fallback has been nice when facing ramp decks.
Here's what I have right now:
Despise/Duress for 1 drop discard
Skinshifter and Sylvan Advocate for value 2 drops (I'm looking for a better 2 drop than Skinshifter)
Tireless Tracker and looking for another good 3 drop
